2921  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does anybody know who's sending these transactions? on: February 21, 2017, 07:05:14 PM
Those transactions might be getting sent by a service that works out which Bitcoin addresses belong to which wallets. There is a reddit thread discussing such privacy attacks using dust.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3a1hte/psa_dust_being_sent_to_your_addresses_might_help/

Companies and websites like those linked below use taint analysis to identify groups of addresses belonging to the same wallet. Those same companies might also use dust transactions for further wallet analysis.

I know the odds are against it but I can't help thinking maybe it might just pass.  I mean, bitcoin is going to happen anyway and the SEC, the governments can't really control that and they must know it.  But an ETF would give them the ability to control the big money that goes in and out of bitcoin even if they can't control bitcoin itself.  An ETF would open up a huge regulatable gateway to bitcoin, of which the government can play gatekeepers to their heart's content!  If the SEC sees it that way, I think it's in  Tongue

Blockchain is the latest business buzzword, despite most business people not having a clue what it is. The ETF might get approved simply because someone important heard its got something to do with blockchain.
2923  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 21, 2017, 05:28:50 PM
I think everyone agrees that it is more likely that the ETF will be denied, so it is priced and nothing would in practice.

I'd guess plenty of people have taken a bet on a yes. I expect a fair few of them to do a runner in the case of a no. It's the most exciting bit of action on the horizon so if it's not happening then there might be a short term sag. Everyone loves potential hype.

Some traders are speculating there will be a bit of a dump before they announce the ETF decision. They think a significant number of the traders anticipating a no will take profits early. In the long term I don't think it matters, Bitcoin's price will soon recover from the latest bad news.
2924  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 21, 2017, 01:18:18 PM
What are the chances of another "China bans bitcoin for the 97th time" story sometime between now and $1242.... Roll Eyes

i think this story not find readers any more Smiley they will come up with something new Smiley maybe they will try to promote disapproval of the ETF as a catastrophe (if it will not get approved)but we all know, no matter what, Bitcoin road long term is only UP!

Indeed. I'm considering shorting before the allegedly 'catastrophic' ETF news causes the inevitable selling, just so I can accumulate more coins prior to the impending shot at the moon!

That's a huge gamble.

Everyone thought the US would ban Bitcoin before the last ATH, and people dumped in droves in the hope of buying back lower. When the US announced it had decided not to ban Bitcoin it immediately went to the moon leaving the dumpers crying.

If the ETF gets approved the dumpers will be crying while Bitcoin immediately moons, and if it doesn't get approved Bitcoin will moon sooner or later anyway.
2925  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 21, 2017, 12:20:24 PM

what's currently the "official" ATH?

$1163 ? (Bitstamp 2013)

bitstamp ATH $1163
bitfinex ATH $1175
Gox ATH $1242

Everyone says the Gox ATH was manipulated, but at the highest price it's a big psychological barrier. I'll be happy if it takes another week to go above the bitstamp ATH. I expected more of a battle to get over $1100.

I think 'seed' words, in Electrum, are the same thing as 'wallet' words, in Multibit.

So my question is where are the seed words, in my case, that are usually created with a new wallet?

Are they the same as my old multibit wallet's wallet words?

Electrum can generate two different types of wallet. If you make an electrum wallet by importing private keys then that wallet has no seed/wallet words. You have to backup the wallet file itself, or the private keys you created it with. There are no seed/wallet words for that type of electrum wallet.

If you make the other type of electrum wallet by using seed/wallet words you only need those words to backup your wallet. However, electrum and multibit seed/wallet words are incompatible with each other. Electrum will generate a different list of addresses to multibit from the same seed/wallet words.
2927  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 21, 2017, 10:16:53 AM

You only need to know the "trend": Has the establishment / authorities, ever done anything to pump BTC? No. They have done exactly the opposite (hammering BTC with "negative news"). And BTC rises despite these.

The establishment's attitude could be changing. The EU is debating new rules to stop any company discriminating against any customer based on where his IP says he's located. The debated new rules specifically include consumers paying with virtual currencies.

Most companies accepting Bitcoin refuse to do business with New York residents out of fear of the Bit License, but the proposed new EU rules would compel EU companies to do business with them. That could help pump Bitcoin.

A European Parliament committee has proposed new measures that would prevent location-based discrimination against consumers in the economic bloc, including users of digital currencies...

The draft document states:

“The Commission should assess whether to provide the legal framework that allows, subject to the freedom of contract principle, the protection of undertakings and consumers when the transaction is carried through alternative modes of payment, including virtual currencies, other blockchain type transactions and ewallets.”

We are now well above 1000 Euros, coinmarketcap says it's an average of €1017.81 and google says it's an average of €1028.

Next (after a new ATH): 1000GBP.

If the cup and handle predictions work out we might go up to 4000 GBP or more. I haven't been through an ATH pump like the last one yet, and I'm looking forwards to the next one.

Thanks bud, for that help.

Shoot me a tip address and I'll send you something next time I have some work on the go.

We aren't allowed to post addresses in threads, but you can find mine in my profile linked below.

What do you mean about the seed words?

You did see it, the finex high was $1110.

It's $1080 $1088 now on stamp. It's moving up for the first time since before the weekend after boring sideways for ages. The fiat from the banks must be getting to exchanges now the weekend is over.

I'm glad you got control of your coins back.

One thing I noticed was the number of unused addresses which appeared in the list, interspersed amongst the used addresses. Why was multibit generating these? Was that me changing my mind half-way through or what?

I don't know why multibit generated those addresses.

So does this mean I can spend from either wallet's private keys, now? Not saying I want to maintain two because it might just be too confusing and a bit pointless.

Yes, you can spend from either wallet's private keys now.
2933  Other / MultiBit / Re: MultiBit HD 0.2.0 released - Buy/Sell bitcoin using Glidera on: February 20, 2017, 09:42:35 PM
Hm. I'ts not showing the balance I was seeing in multibit... about 3BTC short.

Did you import the private keys for the change addresses as well as the private keys for the normal addresses?

Each time you spend some of the Bitcoins in an address multibit generates a new change address and sends the change to it.

If an address has had some, but not all of its Bitcoins sent out from multibit then the change gets sent to the list of addresses below. The screenshot shows the settings I used to recover those addresses.

To generate the change addresses (and their private keys) you click the BIP32 Derivation tab on that webpage, then enter m/0'/1 into the BIP32 Derivation Path instead of m/0'/0 (which you use to generate normal addresses).

This is an example of what the webpage will look like after you enter m/0'/1.

2934  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Backup of a wallet on: February 20, 2017, 09:40:28 PM
I have encrypted my wallet file with 7zip and uploaded to my cloud; and i will use the same wallet for next transactions. If my computer lost, would i able to use my coins? The backup is old, and doesn't include new bitcoin addresses created by Electrum afterwards.

If your computer gets lost you would still be able to use your coins by using your backup wallet. However you should also back up your wallet words that you created your wallet with. They are all you need to restore your original wallet. You can choose to only backup your wallet file, but it's safer to also backup your wallet words.

New Bitcoin addresses created by Electrum after you backed up your wallet will be available if you restore from the backup. Electrum can generate millions of them using your old wallet file. Each wallet file will always generate the same list of addresses.

Ironically localbitcoins (and anything else using Google’s captcha) is blocked in China by its great firewall. All those traders have to use a VPN to access it. If China decides to ban localbitcoins it would be ineffective.

I wonder what they're using it for. Buying coins as they wait to get back on an exchange expecting it to be somehow higher? Or doing some of that mythical capital flight? I'm kind of surprised by the figures.

According to cointelegraph the Chinese traders are flocking to the Japanese exchanges. They must be buying on localbitcoins, then sending those Bitcoins to the Japanese exchanges. I wouldn't deposit on any exchange that won't let me withdraw for another month, and neither will most Chinese traders.

Traders from China moving to Japanese Bitcoin exchanges

the global Bitcoin exchange market continued to prosper, with many traders from China moving to Japanese Bitcoin exchanges and the rest migrating to peer-to-peer platforms such as LocalBitcoins

Look at that Chinese LocalBitcoins volume:

Chinese exchanges weren't fake after all, what a surprise!

wow, the chinese managed to invent zero fee trading on local bitcoins??!?  Cheesy

No way! Absolutely unbelievable! I think I was a bit wrong about my thoughts on China Volume after seeing this. Well, they create most of the new coins and surely they have to find new (old) ways to trade. Sure this is a good one.

It’s all the more notable that LocalBitcoins remains blocked in China due to the country’s state-imposed firewall.

“We’re already technically blocked in China as our site uses, among other things, Google’s re-captcha system,” a LocalBitcoins staff member wrote on a social forum. “As all Google resources are blocked in China you can’t log in to our site from mainland China unless you use a VPN.”

Okay re-installed... albeit with a few hiccups.

If I select 'restore.. or import..', it asks me 'Please enter a seed phrase, a master key, a list of Bitcoin addresses, or a list of private keys'.

Which of the 4 options should I select?

A list of private keys like the one below with no white spaces between them.

Hm.... I'm on Linux.

Would it be safe to remove Electrum and re-install it, at this stage of the process, do you think?

I haven't tried the linux version of electrum yet, and I don't know if its GUI is different to the windows version.

First try clicking the file menu, then 'New/Restore' as shown below.

Afterwards try 'Restore a wallet or import keys' using the settings in the screenshot below.

If that doesn't work (or the linux GUI is different) I guess it would it be safe to remove Electrum and re-install it.

I recommend you install electrum version 2.6.4 because the newer electrum 2.7.x versions are buggy.

Yes, I'm using Electrum version 2.6.4 .

Quote
You only need to import addresses(corresponding private keys) with positive balances.

Okay. Got that. I managed to import the first few keys successfully. I have fewer than 30 transactions.

But it seems Electrum won't allow me to create a new non-watching-only wallet by importing addresses/private keys.

I initially opted for a watching-only wallet because a) it prompted me, and b) it seemed like a sensible thing to do while using the software for the first time. Now when I create a new wallet (because watching-only means you can't access your funds), it no longer prompts me to choose watching-only or non-watching-only. It defaults to watching-only. Which is not what I want. I want a real usable wallet with access to all my funds.

The only other way to create a wallet, it seems, is to select 'Create a new wallet' instead of 'Restore a wallet or import keys'.

Am I correct in saying that for the purposes of migrating from a buggy multibithd to electrum264 I should be doing a 'restore' and not a 'create'?

Try the instructions below if you are using windows. Even if you already installed the normal electrum wallet you can still install the portable one. All the portable version's wallet files install into the same folder as electrum-2.6.4-portable.exe, so the portable version doesn't interfere with the regular version.

Download electrum 2.6.4 portable from here (because the latest 2.7 versions are buggy).

https://download.electrum.org/2.6.4/electrum-2.6.4-portable.exe

Create a new folder and copy electrum-2.6.4-portable.exe into it, then double click it to start the wallet.

An install wizard window should open. At the top of it select the "Restore a wallet or import keys" option, then click the "next" button.

Another window will open with a box in it that you can type your list of private keys into.

After that click the "next" button and another series of windows should open. Leave each window's settings as they are and click the "next" button in each one until the wallet opens.

You can leave the password boxes blank, the electrum wallet can work without a password, and its password is not the same as your multibit wallet's password.

When the wallet opens it should sync within minutes and show your Bitcoins. You can use it to send them wherever you like.

2940  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: February 19, 2017, 11:13:03 PM
Byteballs needs more marketing to get more people in on every distribution rounds. Community should organize some kind of campaign.

There were a few signature campaigns, the last of which ended recently.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1760807.0

If enough people contribute coins for another there would be plenty of sign ups to it. Getting enough coins to pay for it is the big problem.

Is there a community donation fund for such purpose ?
Maybe we should create a Bot in the Wallet where we can offer apps/projects or marketing campaign which needs some donation of the community.

I can't find one mentioned in the OP and I haven't noticed one mentioned in this thread, although I haven't read every page. Creating a donation Bot in the Wallet is a good idea.
