You meant to say 2024 instead of 2022, I'm sure. Smiley

As for the $180k it's not unrealistic. Looking at what happened last time, we can expect $200k+ in 2024. When? Plus-minus 5 months to May 1, 2024. But hardly much sooner than that, and definitely not later. No one wants to be late to buying coins cheap, so, in my opinion, the next ATH will happen before the next halving.

Yeah, I think a few months before the next halving will be a time where lots of investors will want to buy Bitcoin, and therefore the price will inevitably go up.

Although there might well be other factors that we're ignoring at the moment which will be pretty obvious when they happen. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't know if it's possible, but it would be amazing if there's manual or automatic fan control based on the temperature, as well as having control of the power consumed somehow.

It would be great to be able to run these silently at lower specs.

It's pretty obvious what's the difference between the odds of sports betting and usual casino games.

However, there are really gamblers who luckily hit some good wins playing casino games that's why they think the probability to win here is much better compared to sports betting or strategy-based games.

Well then, let's just allow them to have thoughts like that until....

In Casino games the odds are fixed because everything is known, for example the odds of getting 2 sixes in a dice is 1/6 * 1.6, or about 2.8%... and those never change

In sports bets this is more difficult to calculate, specially when the teams haven't played between each other before, but still someone has to give some kind of odds for the bets to be placed. Different places will calculate this probability in different ways.
2924  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - UEFA Qualifiers on: November 06, 2022, 11:42:49 PM
2022 Qatar World Cup is not long before it starts. The Qatar World Cup starts on the 20th with the match between Qatar and Ecuador. Most of the teams that have qualified for this World Cup are very experienced and strong. However, in terms of strength, Brazil, Germany and Argentina will be the most ahead I think these three teams will be one of the contenders for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Brazil may announce their World Cup squad on the 7th. November.  I hope that Brazil will surprise the football world in the World Cup squad. Since Messi is in great form for Argentina, this World Cup will be one of the best opportunities for Argentina. Because Messi has announced that he will not play this World Cup. It goes without saying that Argentina would not be very strong without Messi. the

Messi just had a small injury, but he is definitely playing in this world cup.

Leo Messi will remain in treatment for an inflamed Achilles tendon as a precautionary measure. He will resume training next week.

Qatar going to the next round is possible, but not probable. The advantage with Qatar is that they are virtually unknown to their opponents. They are in excellent form recently and we always over-estimate the chances of both Netherlands and Senegal. Obviously Senegal has given some of the most spectacular upsets in the world cup, but they have failed to perform in a consistent manner. IMO, the strongest team in the group is actually Ecuador, and not Netherlands. There is even a chance that Netherlands may fail to qualify.

Yeah, I guess Qatar would need to be lucky, say win with a surprise 1 - 0 to the Netherlands, or something like that. It can happen, but in my view the Netherlands and Ecuador are the two teams going forward under normal circumstances.
2926  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Which has better odds, lottery, online gambling, or sports betting? on: November 06, 2022, 11:38:05 PM
Online gambling and lottery have worst odds, players usually prefer sports betting due to the better chances of winning. I don't know what is exact house edge on lottery games but casino games have about 3-4% edge, sports betting is best shot for majority due to the mentioned reason, IMO.

Also the fact that standard casino games all have the same odds, whereas in sports bets different casinos will end up having different odds for each team.
2927  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Two Gambling Stories on: November 06, 2022, 11:36:10 PM
I think the issue here is that the penalty for stealing depends on what the person did with the stolen goods, but I think it shouldn't.

It shouldn't matter if you put the money in the bin or won the lottery with it, the penalty for stealing it should be the same in both cases.

I'm sure that the Netherlands will make it to the knockout phase of the competition, and then anything is possible, of course.
I believe that the Dutch have the quality to make a very good result in Qatar, but they will also need a bit of luck, which they often did not have at the world championships, when they even lost three times in the final.
I'm sure that Brazil, Argentina, but also France, Spain and England will be among the main favorites for the World Cup.
We are certainly expecting a very uncertain and exciting world cup.

I would love to see a Brazil vs The Netherlands final. It would be so interesting to see such different football styles fighting for the trophy.

That's bad. Politics shouldn't have so much saying in sport. The best nations who qualified should compete in the World Cup and that's it! I understand that FIFA wants to kick politics out of football, but there are other way. Players that play for Tunisia are not to be blamed or punished just because their government is involved in their football federation.

Any international sports competition is political in a way, since there are countries participating in them...

For example Russia was disqualified from this world cup: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/soccer/news/russia-out-world-cup-2022-poland-advanced-ukraine-postponed-qualify/oxyxia6hvqgo5ljgj60wfnla

Those are both custodial, right? I almost forgot I'm okay with that for small amounts.
Both are custodial by default, yes. With alby you can connect to your own node, and I think that's also planned with Stacker News in the near future.

I don't like that it wants me to install a browser plugin:
It's not needed, it's just a better experience but I don't have it installed and everything works just fine.

https://stacker.news
First impression: That's better, .onion available!
On second thought: after entering my email address:
It works after I try again, but it's a weird system: it doesn't let me create a password, I have to click a link in my email every time to login. And the link brings me to the non-onion site again. Even if I manually edit the link, it doesn't allow me to login on the .onion domain. Also, the login link expires after each click, so I have to copy/paste my email address to get a new link each time. Not a very convenient website, unfortunately.
I haven't used the onion service, but personally it just works great, it logins once from email and then you're always logged in. You could try use a lightning wallet for login, no need for email. Have a look here for wallets: https://stacker.news/items/88811
2932  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: November 03, 2022, 11:17:49 AM
^^^ This is getting really shitty. What authority does the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has over FIFA? FIFA has already made its decision and they found no wrong doing from the part of Ecuador. It is the Chileans who are behaving as if they are sore losers. There is so much uncertainty with less than a week to go for the start of the world cup. And it is solely due to the unpalatable behavior by the Federación de Fútbol de Chile (FFCh). There is no new evidence being presented, and ideally CAS should stay away from this shit show.

The evidence will be presented today and tomorrow, or thereabouts.

CAS will be hearing this, and they will have the last (finally) word about this.

I'm not sure why they would say something different than FIFA, but maybe I'm missing something. They could might well have different authorities and it might be the case that a no for FIFA might be a yes from CAS.

We'll have to wait and see, the result should be available in about a week or so.
2933  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Minedala #2 - Bitcoin art that mines bitcoin on: November 03, 2022, 11:11:03 AM
Art that mines Bitcoin? Now I have seen everything!

Although it would probably not mine enough coin to be a significant miner, but rather serves at artistic purpose, I think thats pretty cool. I think it would be even way cooler If the art would be energy-self-sustaining (like instead of getting power from an outlet, the artist could perhaps install solar panels or some other form of green energy and put it outside in the sun (but not too far away from a wifi source) then that would be a very nice Bitcoin monument to self sustaining decentralized financial freedom.

Isn't it something?  Smiley I love how creative some people are.

And to be honest, it's a pretty decent miner. I mean, it's doing 4TH/s, that's better than the home miners like the Compac F(about 300GH/s) and the Apollo BTC(about 3TH/s).

If you just point it to nicehash it should give you a few thousand sats per day...

And yeah, I agree. It would be super cool to have a self sustained miner art. But I guess you need too much power these days.... maybe you could get away with an under powered Compac F. Those are really efficient.

So, does this means the transaction fee is become halving too? If this happens, that possible for all predicted price become to true, 100k, 500k until 1 M.

But I still confusing when look how the Dollar rule the world, Dollar don't have limited supply, the government can anytime print the money, but I don't know why the Dollar is very strong to beat Euro and Pounds, this mean the total supply is not affected?.

Transaction fees are set by the sender. Higher fees get processed faster because miners get to choose which transactions to include in the block they mine, and they usually want to put the highest paying transactions to maximize rewards.

See block 761459 for example

The miner got paid the current block reward of 6.25BTC plus 0.232BTC in transaction fees. The more people using the network, the higher the fees will end up being to be included in the next block.

You can see that eventually the transaction fees will be larger than the block reward that keeps halving over time.
2935  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Minedala #2 - Bitcoin art that mines bitcoin on: November 02, 2022, 11:54:15 PM
I found this cool art from cryptograffiti, and wanted to share here:

It looks great, and it actually mines Bitcoin.

The front of this piece was created from dead S9 hashboards and various repurposed smining parts.

On the back is an underclocked S9 hashboard (~4TH/~300W) w/ Braiins OS+ firmware mining to Slushpool.

The front-facing exhaust fan powers on bringing the work to life while it works to pay for itself.

At the end of this month will be 10 years that I've been creating Bitcoin art. Thanks for looking!

If you are really skilled and knowledgeable about sports then I am sure you would prefer betting on sports and honestly, I think you could definitely improve your chances if you do your research and do it right. I cannot say the same for any other gambling games like dice. Those are basically just luck. Either you are lucky or you are not. Its all probability and your skill and strategy cannot change that, even if it sometimes feels like it can.

Now lotteries, that's a suckers bet, as they say. A hopeless attempt to deceive yourself into spending a small amount of money because it seems not as bad as betting larger amounts at the poker table, for example. But the jackpot will always be out of reach.

Yeah, I agree on this.

Lotteries and casino games are basically just luck with fixed odds given by the game itself. The odds are known and clear, let's say with a dice you have 1/6 chances of getting a 4, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's just luck in the end even though they make it more complicated.

Now, in sports bets they have to give a certain score to each player/team. And that's subjective. You might even see differences in those odds at different betting places. And maybe you know more than the people creating those odds.

If you're knowledgeable in sports, I think you might have a better chance that just luck.

Is the issue still ongoing regarding the situation in Ecuador? In the qualifying match, they had drafted a player who was not eligible to play, and this would be investigated. An appropriate punishment would then be devised on the basis of the investigation. Would FIFA go far to exclude the country from participating in the World Cup? I don't understand why they are only now coming up with this, that incident had already happened a long time ago, didn't it? Italy would then take the place of Ecuador, which is understandable in itself because they are reigning European Champions. If that is the case, we will have a nice group with the Netherlands, Senegal, Italy and Qatar. All 3 countries are not happy with that of course, since Italy is then the favorite to win the group. I think Ecuador will get a different punishment. Exclusion from participation would be very harsh intervention.

The first appeal to FIFA was denied. Now they are presenting the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which is the last and most powerful option.

Whatever they decide is final.

So, in theory there is still a chance for a change in the world cup just before it starts.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will hear the Chilean football federation's appeal on Nov. 4 and 5 against the decision by FIFA to allow Ecuador to play at the World Cup, a source close to the case told Reuters on Thursday.

A decision is expected by Nov. 10, days before the World Cup kicks off on Nov. 20 with Ecuador scheduled to take on hosts Qatar.

So we will know in about a week what's the final outcome of this whole saga.

Just in case someone wants to have some ready to use lightning addresses, here are two services that work great for this:

https://getalby.com
This is a website dedicated to help creators get paid in sats through their content. They have a plugin that makes payment in websites extremely easy. You end up with a lightning address like this: nullama@getalby.com

https://stacker.news
This is a news website that uses sats as the native upvoting system. When you create an account you end up with a working lightning wallet and a lightning address like this: nullama@stacker.news

You can use those wallets and lightning addresses in other services of course, and it all works like a charm.

If you only want one, I would go with stacker news since it's actually a great website anyway.

Or he could've just used MinGW to build the 0.1 version, especially if the program layout on the filesystem consisted of bin/, usr/, lib/ folders MinGW programs are packed as (as later Windows versions of Bitcoin Core had always been).

From the emails you can tell he was actually using both, gcc and Visual Studio to generate the executables:

I've attached bitcoin.exe with symbols. (gcc symbols for gdb, if you're using MSVC I can send you an
MSVC build with symbols)
2940  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why did satoshi develop bitcoin in windows? on: November 02, 2022, 03:58:09 AM
Based on the public things I've read I thought as others have mentioned that Satoshi was a "windows guy", but the release of the emails from Satoshi to Hal Finney tell a different story:

Quote from: Satoshi Nakamoto
Everything is always harder to build on Windows than Linux

Quote from: Satoshi Nakamoto
The gcc debug version is attached.
gdb is easier to use than you'd think. gdb.exe is the only file. You run
gdb bitcoin.exe
then type "run"

So it looks like Satoshi was actually a "Linux guy" in the end as he mentioned it was easier to make software for Linux, and he was using the gcc debugger.

It seems to me that he was just publishing the software for Windows as it was the more commonly used OS, but he would have preferred to use Linux.
