Aye, I don't think we're in disagreement here, m8.  Sorry I was so grumpy about the misunderstanding. ;p

and yea, I tend to forget just how ungodly expensive electricity is there in some of the Euro countries. .23euro per KWH is just friggin insane.  An expensive area here in the US is less than half of that.

Ahem, panda perhaps you have discounted Southern California as part of the US.  Yes, in the great republic of Kalifornia my bill at home last month was $118 USD for 384 KwH (Summer rate with about 30 units into Tier 3 SCE) - that's without mining and only in Tier 3.  If I mined with just 1 6950 I go to Tier 5 and pay over $0.55 USD per KwH and have the possibility of having my electricity shut-off on a hot day.

You can add California to PIIGS I guess  Roll Eyes Angry
2923  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU FPGA overclock monitor fanspeed GCN RPC linux/windows/osx 2.4.3 on: June 21, 2012, 01:04:42 PM
I got a question and I seriously tried to find the answer to it by both googling and searching the forums.

I'm mining with a Diamond 7970 on a Win 7 x64 setup using 12.3 driver package using CGMiner 2.4.3.  The miner will lock up sometime between 10 minutes and 3 hours and it seems to get stuck with the last line in the CMD prompt being Long Poll Detected.  This is my only 7970 and I'm not familiar if it may be something with the driver version (all my other rigs are 6870s and 6950s).  The only thing I think might be contributing to the lockups is the rig is extremely slow as far as response time since I'm running off an old 30GB IDE drive. I dropped the swap file size from auto to 512MB and that made it a little more snappy with less disk thrashing and turned off all the Win7 eye candy.

The card mines fine around 1000core/150mem but when I bump it to even 1025/1050/1075 or 1100 it gets the above mentioned lockup on CGMiner.  The ASIC is 78.7 for the GPU and I'm using stock voltage so I'm pretty sure there's more OC headroom.  The rest of the system runs fine during these lockups - I just notice I stop submitting shares and it gets stuck at the longpoll.  Any ideas?

My 5830 reaches 95C and then starts throttling itself. I have no idea how he got his 5970 to 103C.

My Double-D XFX 6950s throttle at 103C.
2925  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Swapping cards # for RMAs. (Sapphire xtreme dying after ~1 year) on: May 23, 2012, 06:33:30 PM
...
The cards propably log runtime too, so they can see in a log how much time the card have been "on". Propably the card logs full-load time too. So then they can see that the cards have ben run for longer than manufacturer date and that would raise some alarms.

Propably, the Sapphires 5850's are tuned to work flawlessly under full load until end of warranty (1yr) + a few days, to keep the parts cost down. Half load = 2 yr + a bunch of days.
25% load = 4 yr + 1 month
and so on. Since they don't expect people to game under full load 24/7 (which you would basically "do" if you mine with the cards, from the card's point of view), they don't expect the card to fail after 1 year.

If they find out what they do, you would be charged with fraud. You cannot expect the card to work after 1 year (when the warranty expired) so just pull up your wallet and buy a new card!
Wouldn't planned obsolescence be a fraud too ?
(cards were running at 1.088v and ~70c)

Ps : They aren't risking much since these card aren't sold anymore.

Was there no forethought when you bought the cards?  If you bought in on pretty much an AmEx card and some Visa/MCs the card will extended the warranty out a year.  If you knew you were going to min with the cards and didn't want the risk you could have also bought an extended warranty from somebody like squaretrade.  If taking the time and energy to carefully swap out serial number stickers is not worth the $20 to sell your ethics (the price of a squaretrade warranty) then you probably shouldn't be posting on this board.

I lie all the time when its a matter of convenience (like not bothering to tell Frys that a "brand new" video card is dead - good lord anybody knows you would have to stand in line for 1 hour only to see them put the card back onto the shelves) but not if it means scamming a company.  To each their own  Roll Eyes

It looks like your right upper lid is drooping slightly (so I would say yes for the time being).  Have you always had that or is it a recent condition?  If it's worsening recently you may want to have it checked out by a neurologist (or ophthalmologist if you had any eye trauma).  If it's worsening then you always have to worry about nerve compression from a tumor.  Autoimmune and inflammatory causes are usually rarer (esp in males).

This is the kind of condition where a good history and physical can usually give the answer without spending $2k on a head CT/MRI and chest xrays.

I don't know about everybody else's  setup but yours is the best/cleanest I've seen.  I wanted to copy your setup but building a custom house/babies/patients took a priority.  Oh and the wife, yeah almost forgot that one.  Fortunately she's humored me and allowed me to use her office (free juice).  I'm up to 7.2 GH/s and I think I'll call it quits at this point since I can't find any more spots to hide rigs from her patients.  I can't see myself buying singles since I don't have as much confidence in resale of the units should shit hit the fan.  I just need to move my 6950 from my house to somewhere in her office since 24/7 usage is getting me close to Tier 5 with SCE and that's over $0.40 per KWH  Angry

What?!?!?! Where do you live to have crazy prices like that?
SCE = Southern California Edison, I'm guessing.

Yeah I posted a couple times in the "how much does your electricity cost" thread.  I'm sure there are places in the world that are more expensive, but for a large population center the rates paid in CA are not reflective of our buying power.  Just running one 6950 at home is bumping me up 2 Tiers so I want to take that to my wife's work with the free electricity.  That's why even though I could drop 20 or 30k into Bitcoin I don't think I'll be able to find a suitable place in Southern California to run a "gigavps farm".

Back in October 2011 I had about 5GH/s and was # 97 when BTCGuild had 1.8TH/s.  There were only 2 miners that consistently had over 40GH/s at that time.  I guess the big boys were on other pools or going solo.
2930  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Out of SHEER curiosity.... on: March 22, 2012, 07:38:37 AM
Gigavps' was at 30ghash for a while a few months ago, but since then he has added BFL singles to his arsenal, so I'm not sure how high it is now.

Well, since I've been outed, here's the breakdown thus far.....

30Gh -  GPU
5.8Gh - 7 BFL singles

Future setup......

30Gh - GPU
9.1Gh - 11 BFL singles - the last 4 are on their way

There is more stuff on the way besides the singles, but that's another 4-6 weeks out, if you know what i mean.

I have a pain in my nose everytime I drink my coffee. It only happens right when I'm drinking it and it is extremely uncomfortable.

What can I do?

Hey DrG and boognish!

Update: I went to see that specialist, and took him DrG's write-up.

The orthopaedic specialist said your write-up was very good and he agrees with your approach (cautious skepticism regarding surgery, treatment plan, 2 different injuries).

He did some physical tests and told me that the first injury from my wrestling days is probably a chipped piece of cartilage, or possibly a fracture. The chipped piece of cartilage is stopping my arm fully extending by 1-2cm compared with my right arm. I had an x-ray and go back in 2 weeks to see about that. He said that if it is a chipped piece of cartilage then it is probably not a good idea to operate (since it would have healed over during these 4 years), and the way forwards is with physical therapy. Surgery is a last resort.

When I banged my elbow 1 year ago, he says this is scholars elbow and that the tingling/aching I feel, is where the nerve is regenerating itself. And that nerve damage takes a *really really* long time to heal.
I think it is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olecranon_bursitis (not sure)

Overall I'm really happy! Could've been worse! Feel free to chip in with your own diagnostics doctors. Just putting this out there so everyone can see you're the real deal and did such a good job. The specialist liked your write-up. I stopped twice while reading it, but he asked for the whole thing and said it was good.

Keep it up! This is the future and you are doing good by providing people with easy access medicine. Of course, an online doctor is not a replacement for a real specialist, but it is a good supplement that can only help make people more healthier if used in a correct ethical manner.

Hugs & kisses,

Genjix

Sorry for the late reply, got a couple of sick babies really keeping me busy at home  Tongue

The chipped cartilage sounds about right from my minimal ortho knowledge.  Usually if it's a very acute injury (less than 1 month) they can try to remove the chip or stitch it back in the right place.  Obviously athletes have access to this more often and it's a common procedure for them.  Now it's an old injury so it's probably just scar tissue.  You can use rehab to regain some of the mobility back.

It's hard to say what is causing the deep ache in the arm.  If I could examine you it would be easier since one would just need to map out where the nerve is being impinged.  From what I heard so far it sounded like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulnar_nerve_entrapmentUlnar Nerve entrapment.  The easiest way to confirm this would be to do nerve conduction studies but those are both expensive and painful (I had them done myself and it's not fun).

2934  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Does windows really use more power than linux? on: March 08, 2012, 01:24:16 AM
To DrG, I really don't think your RAM truly down clocked if you're getting about 1.2GH/s and 580 watts at the wall, that's only about a 2/1 Mh/W ratio and if you can truly down clock the RAM on those cards you should be able to get to 2.5/1 Mh/W

I have a machine with a 6990 and 6970 with engine at 900, mem at 800 doing 1.2 and pulling 620 at the wall. With no down clocked cpu or mobo features turned off yet(still working on how to really down clock the me on those cards)

So If you really had your mem down clocked to those levels you should be saving 20-30 watts per card.

Well I did see the discussions here about people stating they set memory to 300 or some lower number but GPU-Z reported it still at stock clocks.  So I reinstalled a rig today to free up a 2TB HD.  On my Kill-a-watt it reads 680 Watts at load for 4 6870s with 955/1050.  I let the system run for 10 min to reach operating temps.  When I drop them all down to 955/185 I get the pull dropping to 580 watts, about 25 watts down per card.  Afterburner, Trixx and GPU-Z all showed the drop down to 185MHz for the RAM and the temps instantly dropped 2-4C on all the cards.

I don't know of any definitive way to confirm the drop, all the reading seem to indicate that it using less power and memory did drop o 185MHz.  As far as the MH/W, I'm only using the 120V line so that drops my efficiency, and my PSUs are probably all only bronze rated (not the super crazy efficient 1200 W Seasonics) - so I'm not expecting super efficiency (I just want to use the bare minimum PSU to mine safely).

I do have 4 6950s but I split them up over 3 rigs - they only hash 50 more than the 6870s but run a lot hotter even though they're dual fan versions.  I guess I could merge them into a single rig and see what I get (I think the 69xx are more efficient than the 68xx).

Gigabyte H61M-D2P-B3 & Celeron G630 = $50 Microcenter (crazy price mistake, got 2 combos with my friend)
4gb Patriot ddr3 ram = $-10 after rebate at Frys with Pricematch to Newegg
Antec Neo Eco 620W psu = $22 after rebate (still waiting on rebate after 4 months)
Antec 300 case with all covers removed for better air movement = $5 After rebate (again still waiting on Antec rebate)
40GB SATA with bad sectors (freebie from friend)
2 Sapphire 6870s from Amazon = $300 after rebate

Total hash = 630MH.
Total Cost = $360 + ~ $40 in gas driving for parts =~$400 USD

I could put riser on the board for 1x slot but fear it might lead to heat problems since it's in a tight cubbyhole at an office hidden away

I couldn't get any cheap 5xxx cards since I live in CA and so Newegg is automatically off the list due to the crazy sales tax here.

You're the winner so far. That's a crazy good deal for 630MH.

Yeah, unfortunately I can't get any more cheap combos from MC.  I was thinking of getting one of these: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0364087 so I wouldn't have to mess with extenders.

I miss your old avatar (with the cute girl)

Go big or go home....

Stop taunting me  Cheesy   I keep picturing your setup and want to build it but the wife would kill me (since I would put it in her office for the free electricity.  She even has 2 200AMP services.  You know how many dreams I have of "well if I could just hide the wall of hair dryers from her patients...." lol

Well I dropped in a FX4100 into one of my GD70s and clocked it down to 800MHz via BIOS (after I installed Win 7 SP1).  Didn't bother to do windows updates or put on an antivirus.  I put on 11.7 drivers, MSI Afterburner and Trixx and managed to get 4 6870s to 970/190MHz.  Rig pulls 580W from the wall (according to my Kill-a-watt) on a 120V line using a Antec Neo Eco 620W PSU (running latest CGMiner and hashing at 1.24GH/s).  It's been running stable for almost 3 months now.  Maybe I should turn off all the Win 7 eye candy, but the rig is a dedicated miner so I don't think it matters.  Maybe I could turn off some services but I don't think it's worth my time.  The only time it seems sluggish is remote login though logmein.

I would have used a cheaper CPU but I got the 4100 and a board for $100 at Microcenter and sold the board for $130 so the CPU cost me -$30 Tongue

Linux probably can't be beat for peak efficiency but if you don't have time to learn linux Win7 is not a bad option.  The hard drive cost is probably the biggest downside to a Win7 rig.
2939  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: February 29, 2012, 07:33:52 AM
OK because everybody said CGMiner was so great I decided to finally switch over (well mostly now since both babies are asleep  Wink ).  I have been able to get it to work on my single card rigs like my PC at home using this line:

cgminer -o http://gpumax.com:8332 -u 4f385447ccaa1017760af1b8 -p abc123 -o pool.ABCPool.co:8332 -u genericuser -p genericpw -I 9 --failover-only

Does that sound about right?  I figure I'll let afterburner and Trixx handle the clocks since I was able to get the memory down to 180.

My next question is what do I do about my multicard rigs?  I have 4 GD70s running 6870s.  In the past I have always made a worker for every card - that way I know if any specific card is acting up instead of guessing which one in a rig.  Is there any way to tell CGMiner to use one worker for one device and another worker for another?  In GUIminer this is easy as I just create a new worker for each card.

I didn't bother to make a config file - I'm assuming that's OK.

Pirate, you seem to done a great job getting the miner hangs worked out (guess it was a load balancing issue).  I redirected all hashing back to GPUMax this morning and not a single problem in last 16 hours  Grin

LMAO You're not the only one.  It creeped me out for a while.  Now I'm wondering if I could slip a couple rigs into the morgue at my hospital.  On second thought I don't think I would ever want to have to tinker with them there  Shocked
