~snip~
I don't think that it will happen. All the qualification slots have been decided already and there will be no change at the last minute. Earlier, there were rumors that Ecuador would be disqualified and replaced with either Italy or Chile. There was some controversy regarding the nationality of Ecuadorian player Byron Castillo, after the Federación de Fútbol de Chile filed a complaint with the FIFA. But the complaint was rejected and now there is no doubt that Ecuador will participate in Qatar 2022.

Yeah, that was a last minute attempt to qualify from Chile. Apparently they were wrong.

But if they were right, it would have been Chile the one that qualified, not Italy, because they would have forfeited the points won by Ecuador, and give those to the rivals. After you do all the math, it was Chile who would have ended up in a direct qualifier spot in that group. That was the reason, not just because it was "unfair" to them. So there would have been zero chances for Italy for example, as it was even from another qualifying group.

I guess that is human nature, I agree that gambling is not the way, but for the majority, specially if you have the means and access whether online or offline, this people will go and gamble to get out of their stressful like, maybe physical or emotional stress.

And as the majority said, everything should be in moderation, and as an individual, you should be the one controlling everything. Not your addiction to gambling and any vices because in the end you are the loser here.

Yeah, gambling, like any other addictive activity, should be enjoyed in moderation.

If someone cannot control themselves gambling, then it's probably a good idea to not gamble at all.

It's a good thing that underage people are not allowed inside a casino, because their minds are still developing, and they can easily get addicted.
2943  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bolt Card management software is now open source on: August 11, 2022, 12:04:11 AM
These Bolt Cards have a more secure chip than other standard NFC cards.
Can you share a bit more information with regards to the bolded part?

These cards use NXP NTAG 424 DNA, which allows you to generate a new LNURL every time, so that replay attacks are not possible. More details about the chip: https://www.nxp.com/products/rfid-nfc/nfc-hf/ntag-for-tags-labels/ntag-424-dna-424-dna-tagtamper-advanced-security-and-privacy-for-trusted-iot-applications:NTAG424DNA

they ship worldwide and no KYC is needed
no KYC?
funny thing is if they dont ask your name and where you live and a contact email if things go wrong, you will never receive the parcel (real world physics of delivering goods applies)

It can be delivered to your office, a PO-BOX, a friend's home, etc. It doesn't have to be linked to you, as any standard KYC requires.

Regardless of how secure/insecure of this chip, there's bigger security concern with merchant honestness. It's possible what showed on customer display is different with what sent to the NFC card.

Does anyone know whether KYC apply to their debit card feature on this bolt card? Their website don't say anything about it.

Since it's open source you have access to the management of the card  so you could setup an "accept amount" sent to your phone first if you're paranoid. But that kinda defeats the purpose. You can also set a maximum spending for example in the card and it won't send any more sats than that.

The debit card feature of coin corner requires an account there, so that means it requires KYC.
2944  Bitcoin / Project Development / Bolt Card management software is now open source on: August 10, 2022, 02:37:05 AM
You can now manage your own Bolt Cards to make lightning transactions by just tapping with a card, just like you're used to do normally, but instead of relying on third parties like banks, you send the funds directly to the merchant through lightning.

Here's the repository for the management of the Bolt Cards: https://github.com/boltcard/boltcard

These Bolt Cards have a more secure chip than other standard NFC cards. Here's where you can buy one of these NFC cards, they ship worldwide and no KYC is needed: https://www.coincorner.com/TheBoltCard

And here's a bit more information about the usage of these cards, with some videos: https://stacker.news/items/29647

Any merchant that has a NFC enabled store, like https://btcpayserver.org for example, should work with these cards.

I like to read a bit the stories posted in this website: https://www.bitcoinisdead.org

It shows you that many people, most of them so-called experts, have been wrong about Bitcoin over the years.

Mainstream media, central banks, and governments, all probably want Bitcoin to fail, so they will just keep posting negative things about it.

But if you actually read the original material of Bitcoin, most of which is just here in this forum, and easily accessible from here: https://satoshi.nakamotoinstitute.org you will realize that Bitcoin is here to stay and it's a great thing.
2946  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What would happen to bitcoin if all bitcoin-related stuff on GitHub got banned? on: August 10, 2022, 12:43:31 AM
Recently, US Treasury Department has put sanctions[1] on Ethereum mixer Tornado Cash, taken down their website[2], added all associated with the mixer addresses to the OFAC SDN list, and also, which is more important for this topic, compelled Microsoft to suspend Tornado Cash's Github account[3], all repositories and accounts of code maintainers[4]. It is important to emphasize that Tornado cash is not a company but a smart contract that no particular person controls; it is essentially as censorship-resistant and decentralized as the underlying blockchain upon which it is built. In other words, it cannot be "banned" easily.

So, the question that bothers me is could the same happen to Bitcoin? What will happen to Bitcoin if the US Government suddenly decides to take down its Github repos? What if they ban all contributors, maintainers, and lead developers? Is there a place where the bitcoin codebase can migrate to? Are there other code hosting platforms besides Github that are not based in the US or upon which US Government sanctions have little to no influence? Is it possible to build a decentralized and distributed code hosting platform that no one can censor or shut off?

Well, git works in a decentralized manner. This is independent of github, which is just a website.

It's not like, say, subversion (SVN) where you have a server with all the story of the code and you just get a part of it locally. With git, every person that has cloned the source code has a full copy of the entire history of the source code. By the way, Bitcoin was first released via SVN in SourceForge. Times have changed, and now the main Bitcoin client is developed with git on github.

The important thing is that every developer has a full copy of the source code, so it would be simple to just port it to another website that is not github, like gitlab, or literally you could host it in any custom server you want. There's nothing magical about github, it's just very popular.
2947  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling Myths that we often hear on: August 10, 2022, 12:23:26 AM

Myth 6: Knowing a Game Well Increases Your Odds of Winning
>> Fact: Gambling games are designed to not have any aspect that will increase the odds of winning purely out of knowledge or skill.

Although I agree with the others, I would say knowing a game well does increase your odds of winning.

This doesn't apply to every game though, as most are based on pure random. Also, knowing the game well will allow you to know the odds you're getting when you play, so you won't play games that are horribly bad for the gambler, instead you will only play those that are closer to 50/50.

There are games like poker for example, in which there are skills involved, you could in theory keep the count of cards that have been played, etc, and that definitely increases your odds of winning, as the game is not 100% random any more, things have changed in the game which affect the odds of future things happening, so if you can keep track of it, you can be in a slightly better position.

Still, I agree that games are designed so that the house has an advantage, but knowing the game well in some cases does indeed increase your odds of winning.

Many respectable people put gambling, alcoholism and drug addiction on the same level because all of these activities negatively affect the human psyche in the acute phase. If you drink a glass of wine on Fridays or play poker, it does not mean that it will negatively affect your health. But you should always remember that any hobby that can grow into a habit must be controlled.

It's pretty much the same thing. That's how addiction is formed, you do something, get the dopamine effect, you feel good at the moment, and then in the long term you have negative consequences.

It doesn't matter if the thing is tobacco, alcohol, chocolate, or gambling. You feel good in the moment, and you continue doing it because of it.

Short term mindset vs long term mindset.

The people with long term mindset tend to be healthier and wealthier than the ones with short term mindset.
2949  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA World Cup 2022 Group Stage Highlights on: August 10, 2022, 12:10:55 AM
Do we have already odds for the FIFA World Cup 2022? I think that's more likely best to know rather than just saying there's easy or not for the groups. What I mean is odds for every group if ever there is. I don't think that it will always favor on the South American continent, even the defending champion is from Europe.

There are a few odds out already...

fox sports is assuming Brazil is going to win the world cup:

source: https://www.foxsports.com/soccer/fifa-world-cup-men/team-futures?future=World_Cup_Winner&segmentId=0&id=6564

I kinda agree with those teams being in the top places, but maybe I'll reorder them a bit... I just don't see England as the second one for example.
2950  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: August 10, 2022, 12:05:33 AM
Portugal will take the world cup. My best team Italy but this time around i dont trust them. Portugal players are well gallant and skillful. there are other teams that can do or play well but i will still support Portugal

Given that Italy didn't qualify for this world cup, I don't trust them either  Grin

It's a weird world cup without Italy though, they're almost always there, and they're one of the great teams.

In my mind Portugal will do well, but I don't see them winning the world cup, there are just way too many good teams around that are better than Portugal, like Brazil, Germany, France, Argentina, etc.

Worth it because of the possible sponsorships and big $$$ surrounding your career, but other than that it's best to pick a skill or a trade and be professional at it. Most tradesmen that are extremely good at their work get a huge amount of money for what they do, without the same amount of risk that gambling offers. It's a good hustle but it certainly isn't one that can help you through until your retirement. You'll be pressured to earn as much as you can while you're young because professional gambling isn't always there for you.

At the end of the day everyone only has 24 hours every day.

Each person needs to find what they're good at and do that. Maybe even do something that you're slightly good but pays way better.

Also automation can help people earn a lot of money passively. It all depends on many factors, but only working one job is probably not the best way to get rich.
2952  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling in Moderation, Pros can out weigh its Cons in Financial and Health? on: August 09, 2022, 12:48:49 AM
It is really the most horrible because it will really take almost everything from you.  Financial stress often leads to depression and the only way to remove this depression is to have a regular income that can pay both our daily needs and debt.  It is worst for people who are hooked or addicted to gambling because they can be trapped in a loop wherein they keep circling in taking loans, work, and paying loans just to sustain their gambling addiction.
And this is not only a problem with gambling addiction, to be honest I do not know how people deal with being in debt for the most part of their lives as I know that I would not be able to sleep properly if I owed a great deal of money to the banks and I knew that I will need to work for decades to settle that debt, it is because of this I have remained debt free almost all my life and it is one of the main reason why I can be relaxed all the time as I know that even if I were to lose my job I have the resources to deal with it for a long time.

At least in the US it seems that it's pretty common to have debt.

Here's what type of debt people have in the US:

you know what, the fact that Germany did that out of nowhere and beat Brazil with a humiliating score in their hike stadium makes me think that they can't do it again, if they face each other again things will be different, and if I'm being honest I don't think Germany has a team that can win the world cup this year, I'd argue that 2014 Germany was better.

Germany is probably going to be the biggest rival of Brazil in this world cup in my mind. Miroslav Klose scored the 2 - 0 for Germany in that 7 - 1 match against Brazil, surpassing Ronaldo's world cup goals record, and they ended up winning that world cup... it was devastating for Brazil.

Although some other teams might be even worse for Brazil:

Interestingly, Brazil has never won in the world cup against these three teams: Switzerland, Portugal, and Hungary.

And The Netherlands has won 3 times against Brazil in the world cup, with only one loss and one draw. The Netherlands seems to be the most difficult team for Brazil.

Just by looking at those stars on their shirts you can see greatness, Brazil gave birth to players that helped changing the world of football and make it the way it is right now, I can't name another country that has stars (I mean players not tge stars on their shirt) as many as Brazil have in their history and till now, this could be another year for Brazil to add another star to their shirt.

Absolutely.

People tend to underestimate Brazil, but it's just the best team in terms of history of the world cup. They have qualified directly to every single edition of the world cup (only team in the world with that record), and they're basically the best performing team historically.

I can definitely see them at least in the semi-finals, and maybe they will end up winning the world cup this time, to add one more star to their current 5.

It will still be very hot in Qatar, especially as it will almost be winter in Europe by this time. Therefore, it will be harder for European players to adapt than those from Africa or South America. By the way, this is one of the reasons why I think Brazil or Argentina could win the World Cup.

My guess is that Brazil will end up winning this world cup. The weather might help a bit, but they really are great football players, all of them, whoever is playing. It's kinda like second nature for them.

For example Germany can play excellent, but you kinda feel that it was all "studied" and practiced in a way until they perfected it, whereas in Brazil it seems that they are born knowing how to play  Grin
2957  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - UEFA Qualifiers on: August 07, 2022, 04:58:16 AM
I think that there was a bribing scandal which allowed Qatar to get the world cup, the moment such a thing was discovered the world cup should have been moved to another country immediately but it did not happened, so if something as important as a corruption scandal was not enough to change the host of the world cup then we can deduce there are very little chances that the event will be moved to another country when there is so little time left for the world cup to start.
And this is how Qatar got their World Cup. Instead of football fans watching World Cup in the summer, they bought the World Cup to be arranged in the middle of winter and in the middle of the season in all the big football-leagues. It a shame. And UEFA/FIFA still doesn't lift a finger regarding FFP and let Qatar do whatever they want.

Well, that's just a northern hemisphere point of view...

It will be close to summer time in the southern hemisphere though, South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc...

I'm sure all the fans in those countries will be happy to have a World Cup at that time, plus also the times of the matches will be better, not at 4am or so like when it's played in Europe.
2958  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: August 07, 2022, 03:16:13 AM
The problem is that the teams don't have a lot of preparation time for this tournament. Otherwise you could fly to Qatar 3 weeks in advance and then you could prepare optimally there to also adapt to the weather conditions. For example, if you play football in England, France or Italy in November, it can already snow or freeze. Quite strange when you are in Qatar 2 days later on a training field and that it is 32 degrees there. Your body has to get used to that too. What many people don't realize is that you can get a reverse version of a kind of flu due to the extreme temperature difference. If players go home, you can easily catch a cold again in December.

At the moment with the heat wave in Europe you're getting temperatures hovering 40 degrees. That's actually hotter than what's going to be in Qatar for the World Cup.

I think most players will be fine regarding the weather. It's not going to be as hot as summer time there.
2959  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Discussion] Should Gambling be Banned? on: August 06, 2022, 12:50:02 AM
Have you ever seen a small child whose parents forbade him not to play in the mud, no matter how hard the parents forbid the child will not hear because playing in the mud is his hobby. Human nature will not disappear even though it has grown up, something that was forbidden would become his hobby.

Yes, and I see that the kids listen to their parents because if they don't punishment awaits them.  Depending on how parents raise their kids, the effective use of "rewards and stick" greatly affects the kids' core.  As long as the kids acknowledge that their parents have authority over them, they will listen or the kids respect their parents they will listen.  Though I agree that human nature will not disappear but it can be molded.
Gambling has become something that is difficult to separate from humans, from cities to remote areas we can still find people who gamble. Gambling is not the goal of one's life, but rather to entertain oneself to relieve boredom from being tired of working. A person's adrenaline will change when gambling, the excitement of gambling can refresh the brain, that's why so many great people and officials are always active in gambling because it can increase enthusiasm and passion back to normal.

I agree, that is why the government shouldn't ban gambling but instead regulate it.  To take advantage of the tax gambling can bring and at the same time not force its citizen to do illegal stuff.

Yeah, society should create incentives to have a healthy relationship with gambling, not simply ban it as that never works.

The same with alcohol. Banning it doesn't work, treating it as a health issue is the best way to deal with it.

In the case of gambling, it should be treated more like a psychological issue, because in the end it's an addiction like any other.

But this is very boooring
The main idea of gambling is risk that can be rewarded. People love to risk, some of them hicking, another jump from the plane and so on. And a lot of people risk trough gambling.

And tell me, what kind of risk I can obtain through a game with fake money? neither.

Yeah, I don't see the point of gambling with fake money, that's more similar to a game basically.

There's no real gambling component because there's no risk and no reward.
