2941  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is better between keeping assets in exchange or personal wallet on: December 02, 2020, 06:14:24 PM
How good are you at security?

Do you frequent weird and random websites, do you get a lot of popups when you browse the Internet, do you have antivirus?

If you have av and don't click random links, run random apps or visit strange sites you can probably safely store the funds yourself.

Exchanges likely don't have insurance for a loss of funds (I don't think one exists) so if they got hacked, your funds and many other people's funds are gone. Bitfinex got "hacked" a while ago and they credited everyone the dollar equivelant in a token they'd then repay. If you're happy with a random 33% of your fund sbeing liquidated and getting replaced by what could be a lower amount of payment then store them on an exchange if you really think you're incapable of keeping 12 words securely stored/a computer infection free.
2942  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another big step to adoption bitcoin from VISA! on: December 02, 2020, 04:48:56 PM
as long as it doesn't cause people to buy the top.

nobody can buy bitcoin through any of them.
you open an account with this company and get their credit card where you pay $200 annual fee on it among other fees and deposit fiat and purchase stuff with the card. then as a reward point or cash back system they reward you bitcoin.
for example if you purchase something worth $1000 with this centralized card you will receive 0.0007 bitcoin!

this is not news in my opinion, it is just one company that is trying to sell their services by including the name "bitcoin" in their ads.

I see enough expensive credit cards out there to expect they must have some market using them....

I meant more if someone got €10/0.0007 btc and saw it go to €300 for example they might naively thing it's "rise only" and swear off crypto for good.

Although I do think most of Europe has heard of bitcoin by now (especially in the west) and if they haven't bought any yet then they're not going to care anytime soon...
2943  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: December 02, 2020, 02:56:12 PM
I have a question related to this. I used the site for a couple of days to mix some coins, one session at a time, keeping vouchers, and destroying the session. Then I used it again. On the .com not the .onion (I will next time). What I experienced was that each new session, with timer starting back to the beginning etc., was still the same ID. Probably based on my IP address or my browser or both. Is that normal ?

I just tried it and I think it did the same for me so I guess it is. Might just be a saved cookie or something because it didn't do it on incognito.
2944  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Australia’s crypto exchange data breach on: December 02, 2020, 01:12:46 PM
This is the same as what happened with bitmex..

I'm guessing this wasn't a hack either, and likely an employee "mistake".

Anyway there will be a large list going round now from both of those attacks (I imagine) and this one looks to have hit all users rather than the bitmex one just being for Newsletter followers.

If you're a member of that exchange it's pribably a good idea just to add anything you don't recognise to your spam folder and not to open, enable images, download anything or click links in it.
2945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Some help with my first transaction on: December 02, 2020, 12:43:49 PM
The smallest fee is with the slider all the way to the left?

Are you in btc or mbtc also - they're different units..

I think you can go to file>preferences>fees>and check the edit fees manually option but it should already be based on the mempool (at which 0.002btc seems high).
2946  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another big step to adoption bitcoin from VISA! on: December 02, 2020, 10:18:09 AM
Wow! Visa are definitely the biggest payment processor in Europe afaik (not sure about the World but Europe is pretty huge in population anyway)...

Bitcoin at the moment in my opinion should see people only investing small(ish) amounts anyway so getting it as a free reward on a credit card purchase seems apt for that - as long as it doesn't cause people to buy the top.
2947  Economy / Trading Discussion / Does the RSI change based on future events? on: November 30, 2020, 10:27:32 PM
As in the relative strength index. I thought it did but I'm not sure now.

There seem to be enough people. Trying to use it for trading - do we just assume where the indicator currently is is about where it should rest in the future. It might also be that it doesn't normally get represented by candles etc so the points can still move until the close of the price on that time frame.
2948  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitmex Entry Price on: November 30, 2020, 10:24:21 PM
Bitmex is REALLY slow. I'd suggest you put limit orders in just a bit out from the market price (like 20 below for longs and above for shorts).

It's probably bitmex's way of profiting from people or they've wrapped the liquidation engine in something to ensure that dev finitely validates they won't lose money before sorting positions.

Put a stop in before you put in the order too! They're really bad for not taking a n order after you've opened a position and you get to sit there and watch it liquidate (or get the email with the site just ocbtibually refreshing itself or freezing).
2949  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Ledger device - Bitcoin segwit vs native segwit on: November 30, 2020, 10:06:30 PM
You can use whichever you like.

Native segwit used to be less compatible a few years ago but if anyone doesn't accept it now they probably have a MASSIVE delay for security patches and bug fixes so it's probably not a good idea to use them.

The nested segwit is better for compatibility but has higher fees
Native segwit has lower fees but may suffer compatibility issues (with withdrawals it mostly used to be).
2950  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Creating sub accounts in Bitmex on: November 29, 2020, 09:50:35 PM
I don't think that's a feature with them, you can have multiple accounts with them afaik so you could do that instead...

If you want to use different leverages on different positions you could always do a bit more calculations and do everything in cross - as long as they're all in the same direction.
2951  Economy / Economics / Re: bitcoin are good and not USDT what else? on: November 29, 2020, 09:46:05 PM
i meand bank is best place to hold your money not stable coins as they can be frozen and bitcoin are volatile today 17 tomrow 19 k...

so banks are the winners here

If you're after a return banks aren't great...

If you put $20 in your average bank for 5 years you'll probably have $20 or close to it. If you invest it in btc or a stock you might and probably will get more. Even just using a simple algo against selecting a stock....

2952  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best software wallet for Exchanging coins without paying high fee on: November 29, 2020, 09:40:53 PM
You could try using bisq or the waves exchange. I think I paid a flat fee of 0.001 waves on their exchange (0.7 US cents) which sounds a lot cheaper than exodus?
2953  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Claiming BCH from BTC stored in Electrum and moving everything to Ledger Nano S on: November 29, 2020, 08:04:32 PM
Good thing that you know the fund should be transferred before you claim your BCH. Here is the guide from Electeum on how should you claim BCH. Also, choosing a hardware wallet like Ledger was the right decision. Just do not use your old seeds or private keys after claiming BCH from Electrum. Because you are going to input your seed/private keys to another wallet which is a fork of Electrum. Just create a new seed if still you want an Electrum wallet. Otherwise, you may use Ledger without hassle. Don't forget to keep safe your seed in multiple places and don't store it on any online/offline machine. Anyway, there is no issue if you move your funds into Ledger or any other wallet that you are holding the private keys.

I'd advise against putting the mnemonic words anywhere near an online client since it should be avoidable if electron cash is compatible with hardware.
2954  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can electrum cold storage be attacked through transactions? on: November 29, 2020, 06:42:50 PM
I think the main one could be someone changing the change address you're sending too to another address without you recognising something's wrong until it's too late... They could also add another output if you don't click the advanced/preview tab and check it (not sure if it pops up by default at that point though).
2955  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Claiming BCH from BTC stored in Electrum and moving everything to Ledger Nano S on: November 29, 2020, 06:13:03 PM
I think you're better off installing electrum cash's client, create a wallet with your hardware device and modify the derivation path to your biitcoin one (whatever that was).

Provided the hw wallet is secure, everything should be safe but if you're in doubt you might want to move the funds off first.
2956  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Withdrawing bitcoin from exchange. on: November 28, 2020, 08:02:56 PM
Your address is a hash of your public key and your public key is like a remainder function being run on your private key.

Addresses have a many to one relationship with public keys (however collisions are almost impossible).
Each address is a hash of a new public key bit all are stored in your trezor wallet.
2957  Other / Meta / Re: Any Forum rules against racism or racist terms ? (official or unofficial) on: November 27, 2020, 08:19:05 PM
Most people here are pseudononymous, if people know you're of a race, you've probably told them (and potentially too much).

There are rules against threatening harm which is in line with freedom of speech laws in Europe and North america (ex Mexico).

I could get onto another argument about my annoyance only black people are considered slaves by the masses. It completely invalidates most of Europe taking other Europeans as slaves.
2958  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: coinbase froze my account on: November 27, 2020, 11:22:11 AM
Have you verified ID? I think they stopped allowing you to send funds without it since about 2018? If that's where the funds are that is...
2959  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: coinbase froze my account on: November 27, 2020, 10:24:24 AM
What "wallet" was this? You're going to have to give us the site you used to host it with.

What have they given you? Do you have a file to send your bitcoins with?
2960  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie question re UK bank transfers on: November 27, 2020, 06:37:27 AM
Just because holdhodl haven't been hacked before doesn't mean it's the strongest, I even prefer a hacked platform because they will learn from their mistakes and probably adjust their security every time, no one expected to see kucoin got hacked this year, it was very shocking and unexpected and now it's back online and running, hodlhodl doesn't hold funds they claim well p2p platforms can still get hacked

Yeah it also implies they haven't FOUND a successful hacking attempt which might be a questionable route to take.

Well I suppose I'll have to register for online banking though have never used it before. Registering should be easy enough but actually using it in relation to buying btc on an exchange, I've still no idea how that actually works.

You normally just hit pay and then put in an account number, sort code, amount and reference and then confirm everything and the transaction is sent...

It never occurred to me to take a course back in the day. There probably weren't any. Why not list your questions here?

Yeah I just learnt off the community and wiki when I got here. Some courses might have been helpful but I think courses are a bit hit and miss where you could instead find a faucet that pays without you needing to deposit anything and use that money to fiddle with to understand crypto.
