2961  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 16, 2017, 06:10:57 PM
nobody with coins on Chinese exchanges can dump them anymore.

Um, I thought it was only Bitcoin withdrawals that were suspended.

People can still sell their bitcoins and withdraw yuan.
______

This is why the price gap is so great between Chinese and western exchanges.

Before the crackdown many Chinese were willing to pay a premium at home for coins to sell at a discount at western exchanges, so the price was always higher in China. This is precisely one of the major reasons for the crackdown, to stop the outflow of capital. It also explains why prices at the Chinese exchanges were typically $30 higher than in the west.

Now if they want to get their funds out of the exchanges, they're forced to sell at a discount at home and withdraw yuan, over which the government has tight control. Hence the pendulum has swung and prices are typically $30 lower in China.

Sorry, I mean't nobody with coins on Chinese exchanges can dump them on Western exchanges anymore. Those coins on Chinese exchanges are locked out of the worldwide market. They are similar to the coins on Gox before it closed. People are only prepared to buy them at bigger and bigger discounts because they are trapped on an exchange.
2962  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 16, 2017, 04:27:26 PM
Grin Grin Grin it will be funny to see how its dumping later  Shocked Shocked Shocked

I'm not so sure it will dump later. Nobody cares about the PBOC anymore, and nobody with coins on Chinese exchanges can dump them anymore.

Looks like we're going to breakout.

That $1025 high on stamp caught me napping. I had resigned myself to another week of sideways.

Q- I still have MultiBit running,  and I am curious what will happen when I send some funds using BreadWallet?  Would my MultiBit wallet be/become usable by transferring a small amount of coins?

If both wallets are online and working properly you should see your funds simultaneously move in both wallets when you send them from BreadWallet. I don't know if your multibitHD will become usable by transferring a small amount of coins because I don't know what bug made it unusable.

Q- Do wallet words essentially allow the "syncing" of funds over several wallets using what is essentially a private key (being my wallet words)?  Is this a form of redundancy?

Yes, the wallet words are the only thing you need to backup to secure your Bitcoins (unless you used a password combined with your wallet words). You can use them in alternative wallets with compatible wallet word formats for disaster recovery. Bread wallet has a compatible wallet word format to multibitHD, so you can use it to access your multibitHD Bitcoins.

In closing, I would like to test all this by buying HI-TEC99 a pint of beer for your help...  could you PM me a receiving address at your convenience?

Will the Polymeric Network use any of the Qora code base?

I can say that the backbone looks alike Qora, yes, think about a stripped down version, enhanced for the needs of the Polymeric Network.

Will any of the other developers that left Qora be working on the Polymeric Network?

Thanks so much for the reply.  I am using MultiBit HD 0.4.1

To be clear,  I just use my same wallet words to import the keys and essentially the funds with breadwallet?

Thank for your help,  and once I unlock my funds I will send a beer or two.

Yesw, according to BioChanger you just use your same twelve wallet words to import the keys. He says bread wallet does not support more than 12 words.

Another user called TraderCal11 also says bread wallet successfully imported his multibit wallet words.

For others with the same problem how does bread wallet work?

Bread wallet works it just requires the 12 words seen (It does not support more than 12 words)

Thank you all! Solved this by importing keys into bread wallet. I'm fine with having it on my phone.
2968  Other / MultiBit / Re: Multibit restoring wallet not working (reset also not working) funds STUCK. on: February 15, 2017, 12:07:22 PM
Does anybody know of a standard way to deal with the unconfirmed balance bug.

I have had MultiBit HD since august 2015,  and I have dealt with the bug before using a wallet restore using my wallet words.

Now,  it appears the bug is back,  and I am having a hard time clearing this one...  I have a slow internet connection,  so synchronizing over and over doesn't help the patience either.

I just want to get the funds out,  and move to another program, while I await a Trezor as I don't have time to deal with this issue again and again.

I have renamed the directory,  tried a restore using words.  Anybody help here?

Thanks

The simplest fix is to install bread wallet on your phone and import your wallet words into it. There's been an iPhone version of bread wallet for years, and last summer they released an android version.

If you install bread wallet make sure it's the real one. There was a fake bread wallet put on the Apple store six months ago. Its probably been removed by now, but others might appear.

https://www.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/4x0inz/important_a_fake_breadwallet_app_was_just_added/

This is the official bread wallet site where you can get links to the real thing.

https://breadwallet.com/

I posted an alternative solution to a similar problem in the post linked below, but that fix is more work. It involves putting your wallet words into an offline webpage that generates a set of addresses and private keys. You can then import any private keys containing Bitcoins into any type of wallet you want (electrum gives you instant access to your coins).

The screenshots in the post linked below show what settings to put into the offline webpage.

I'm just waiting for the next "china bans BTC" to buy more cheap coins. Dumps are good because it allows the spread of BTC wealth worldwide in some way.

It's a gamble.

If sec say no to winky ETF then you'll get cheap coins then. For the short term.

Is that certain?

We find out if the ETF gets approved in March at the same time the FED tells us if it's hiking the rate. Yellen says it's likely they will hike it this time. How will it affect Bitcoin's price (in dollars) if SEC says no to winky ETF but FED hikes the rate?

The Federal Reserve will likely need to raise interest rates at an upcoming meeting, Fed Chair Janet Yellen said on Tuesday

ETF is approved = $2000-$5000 snap up!!

NO ETF = back to churning...zzz  :-D

But isn't the FED raising the rate supposed to pump Bitcoin? If there's no ETF, but the FED raises the rate at the same time the two events should cancel each other out, and Bitcoin's price should either stay flat or pump.

Okay so I'm quite convinced that the trend is gonna be bullish... but at the same time I'm expecting more dumps bottoming out a bit lower than the last one (around 960-970)... what are you guys expecting

Price will move to the right.  Some up, some down, but mostly right.

Sometimes whales dump coins to test the market's sentiment. None of the latest dumps have frightened the market, so its sentiment is bullish. The price will probably move to the right for a while, then up.
2973  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 13, 2017, 06:45:56 PM
Notice that without any China FUD to work with, the whale dumping into his own walls has no effect.

Oh dear, wat will dey do without China??   Huh

It's back up to $1000 again on stamp. The mini-dump didn't work, traders are getting so used to a $1000 floor that dumps don't scare them anymore.
2974  Other / Meta / Re: Hal's Password was changed recently on: February 13, 2017, 06:00:57 PM
I'd say someone gained access to his email account
Hopefully I'm wrong and it's one of his children

The seclog shows his password was reset using his email. Either his family or a hacker has access to that email address.

February 12, 2017, 07:32:33 AM - Hal - password reset via email

In 2014 someone got access to Satoshi's old gmx email, used it to access the Bitcoin sourceforge site, then defaced it. There was speculation the gmx email account had expired and someone was able to re-register with Satoshi's name. A hacker might have re-registered using Hal's email account name if it expired. Although his email is hidden on his bitcointalk profile it was probably in the stolen database.

Quote
The hackers have further managed to gain access to Project Bitcoin on SourceForge – an old page which does not contain anything of importance save for some mailing lists – for a very brief time until it was restored by SourceForge following requests by Bitcoin developers.

Quote
There are unconfirmed suggestions that Satoshi’s GMX email account expired and someone was able to claim it. Peter Todd however is reporting through twitter that he has been forwarded emails from 2011 by Satoshi’s account suggesting that hacking may be more likely than a simple case of expired and re-registered. GMX has been contacted to ask for clarification and the post will be updated once a response is received.
2975  Other / Meta / Re: Petition to permanently block Hal's account on: February 13, 2017, 11:22:52 AM
The admin has to lock his account to prevent someone from using it and can be released only by the request of his family members and when i checked it says that his account has recently changed password and i am sure it is a breach unless it is said otherwise by the admin.

Hal said his family members were tech savvy, and that he left some Bitcoins for them in bank vaults. Any of them could probably prove they are related to Hal by signing a message from an old Bitcoin address known to belong to Hal. His account should be locked until a family member contacts theymos or a staff member.
I think he and or his wife stated that they had cashed out all the bitcoins to pay for his health care.

I read he cashed out most of his Bitcoins to pay for his health care, but saved some early mined coins for his heirs. The quotes below are from one of his last posts here, and he said he stored some Bitcoins in a safety deposit box for his family.

The next I heard of Bitcoin was late 2010, when I was surprised to find that it was not only still going, bitcoins actually had monetary value. I dusted off my old wallet, and was relieved to discover that my bitcoins were still there. As the price climbed up to real money, I transferred the coins into an offline wallet, where hopefully they'll be worth something to my heirs.

Even with the ALS, my life is very satisfying. But my life expectancy is limited. Those discussions about inheriting your bitcoins are of more than academic interest. My bitcoins are stored in our safe deposit box, and my son and daughter are tech savvy.

ASSUMING above is true. CAN the masses in China move Yuan still in some manner outside of the country, with the exchanges located outside, in a large manner to support

Yes, according to razor-forex there has been a huge spike in Chinese Local Bitcoins trading volume. Some traders are paying ¥1000 over spot price. The volume is at its highest ever.

The Chinese are deserting their exchanges in favour of Local Bitcoins.

Quote
Bitcoin trading volumes on LocalBitcoins in China hit a new all-time high for the week ending Feb. 11, 2017. Charts from Coin.dance show a surge of ¥6,599,940 worth of bitcoin transactions for that week.

LocalBitcoins volumes in the country have not come close to last week’s figure since the third week of June in 2016, when the last all-time high of ¥5,296,533 was recorded.

The demand in China for bitcoin is so great on LocalBitcoins at the moment, sellers are offering the digital currency with markups as high as ¥1000 over spot rate. At press time, the BTC/CNY rate on exchanges like Huobi is hovering around ¥6800.00.

2978  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Skip blockchain verification to prevent full download of blockchain on a node? on: February 12, 2017, 05:42:42 PM
From what I understand a pruned node requires a full install, and after everything is done, only then does it prune it's database.
No, that is incorrect. It does it on the fly and maintains the on the disk the size specified by the prune option. The default is -prune=550 and that results in ~2GB taken up overall (there's overhead, the parameter is only just for blockchain data, not databases). With a new pruned node, at no point in time will you have the entire blockchain on your disk even though you will need to download and verify the whole thing.

Can you switch off your node half way through pruning/downloading, then restart it and continue pruning/downloading? It doesn't restart from the beginning of the blockchain does it?

Thank you HI-TEC99 for the quick answers, I finally was able to do this using the BreadWallet I quickly transferred my coins to a temp wallet in Blockchain until I do some research about new software wallets.

As promised, I'd like to reward you for the support and cooperation with me in this matter, please post below your BTC address and I'll reward you with some coins.

For others with the same problem how does bread wallet work? Do you just import your wallet words into it, and did you use the android version?
2980  Other / MultiBit / Re: Multibit restoring wallet not working (reset also not working) funds STUCK. on: February 11, 2017, 11:05:11 PM
Now I tried and it and it appears in the top, so I went ahead again and try with my wallet details and loaded around 10k of addresses which I think is less but just to be sure, copied them and imported to Electrum and my balance remains 0.

any suggestions?

How did you copy around 10k of addresses into electrum so quickly?

The only thing you import is the list of private keys shown  on that web page. This is an example list of private keys for the first five addresses that starts with 1EzCCawrCJf33TzwAhEY4ffUBABSACk5cz.

Kyh7BqAHH6gFFMfP3EaoXbg8R67UfAZuZJZcR5hBz1iFwHKc2pYr

Was not quick but took around 15 minutes. Shall I try adding more and more BTC addresses until it appears in the electrum wallet? it will work?

Other question, if I keep putting new addresses and I check in the blockchain and there is no historial (no received no sent coins from that address) it means the address not exist in the wallet but if I create a new address that would be the next? because I just tried lots of addresses and none of them with balance.

You said earlier you managed to recover $40 with a private key. Does that address show up in the addresses you are trying?

Now its giving me addresses and after trying for about 1 hour I only recovered $40 with the private key. This will take me years to verify each address as this wallet is SO long , and multibit HD provided me a new address for each new payment.

Is there any way to resolve my client again?

Someone else with a multibit HD problem solved it by importing keys into bread wallet. I know there's a bread wallet for the iPhone, and I think there's now an android version. You could try that, although I have not used bread wallet yet. I don't know if you put wallet words into it, or import private keys into it.

Thank you all! Solved this by importing keys into bread wallet. I'm fine with having it on my phone.
