2981  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nxt source code analysis (QA) on: January 05, 2014, 01:22:01 PM
Your ignorance completely surprises me.

If you allocate 1 GB for your JVM instance,  then 1GB is all you have.   Now that data can indeed go into virtual memory (i.e. disk),  but it still is confined to 1GB.

U can map terabytes into this 1 GB and OS will does its best to feed the data as fast as possible.

You can feed the data into the memory mapped file,  but can you pull it out?

Duh!!! Triple face palm!

DO I GET THE PRIZE FOR SEEING THE FATAL FLAW!

Sorry, no. All data is supposed to be kept in virtual memory and be accessible via memory mapped files. This is what "blockchain.nrs" for.

Bitcoin already got a very serious problem coz of using 3rd party data storage software (leveldb). U should read more than u write. Wink

Still not convinced you have a handle on your memory problem just because you are using Java nio.   Did you happen to have coded a memory caching algorithm so that your java code knows when to take and replace what's in your memory mapped file?  I doubt it,  that would be akin to writing your own object oriented database.
2983  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nxt source code analysis (QA) on: January 05, 2014, 12:56:35 PM
Next step is to calculate cost of attack.
Attacker can send 255 transactions in block. Let's use simple ordinary payment, 1 NXT amout, 1 NXT fee, 510 NXT for full block. 320+156*255 = 40100 bytes of memory.
According to guide, JRE in RPi can use up to 430Mb for heap. Okey, let's assume, that 401Mb is available for blocks and transactions. 401M / 40100 = 10000. Yes, just ten thousand blocks, and you RPi is dead. Or 5M NXT. F*ckin five million coins.

You can just use one NXT and bounce it around the network!

In fact, since everything is all HTTP based.  Someone can write a script.

Create 1000 accounts
Loop 10,000 times
    Loop through each account
Send 1 IXC to each account

2984  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nxt source code analysis (QA) on: January 05, 2014, 12:50:13 PM
Kind of Post Scriptum to previous analysis.

1. Java and it's unpredictable object's size, nice article in russian (sorry, guys Smiley ).
2. For those who don't look deeper: 10000 blocks is just 10 days in current rate (AFAIK, we're still not getting desired 1440 blocks per day). Ten days to kill big part of our decentralized network. And ten days more to kill the rest.
3. There will be short-time paradise for miners Smiley 255 coins every minute. Wow.
4. I believe that if such kind of attack will start, devs fix the problem in one or two day, so it is actually not a reason to sell you coins. Just some funsy math. Do you remember how fast C-f-B redo NRS from self-written http code to Jetty? Moving blockchain to DBMS is the same, more or less.

That's why bitcoind uses leveldb.  It would be joke to keep the entire block chain in memory.

So you are saying this NXT keeps the entire block chain in memory?

Pathetic.

I mean, they likely haven't done any analysis of what kind of database to use as a backend.   There is no way that they'll be able to fix this problem in time for folks to realize that they can spam the network and blow up every JVM that sits on this network!

Well... clock is ticking....  waiting on the dbms implementation....

Also,  realize that they use Java serialization to store the transactions in file....

So when these JVMs go 'out of memory error'... they can't save the transactions file.... and even if they do... that'll blow up!

HILARIOUS!

DO I GET THE PRIZE FOR SEEING THE FATAL FLAW!

2987  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] TNG - Bitcoin Reimagined on: January 05, 2014, 12:35:41 PM
Please call it another name, not TNG. Useless or ugly one

Well any suggestions on a name?

Right now, it isn't even a coin yet.

First there's a specification that needs to be put together.

Then there's a brand new implementation.

The idea however is to be able to build a platform for rapid experimentation of new coin features.

These potentially can indeed spawn out new coins.

There is a $20,000 bounty for the mini-block chain implementation, so possibly this could implement that and receive the bounty.

Posted on January 2nd -  Hash rate is now 4,628,212.6373 GHs.

Posted today (January 5th) - Hash rate is now 5,278,932.9856 GHs.

In other words, in 3 days, 1,000 more 1 THs SHA miners have joined the network and are mining iXcoin.

iXcoin is a gold mine and a lot of folks don't realize it yet!

2989  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BREAKING : iXcoin price up 100%! Network Hash Rate exceeds 1.5 PETA Hashes/Sec on: January 05, 2014, 12:25:29 PM
Hash rate is now 5,278,932.9856 GHs.

An increase in 1 Peta Hash per second (i.e. 1,000 THs machines) in 2 days!!
2990  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IXC To Start Trading on BTC-E! on: January 05, 2014, 12:24:45 PM

Maybe you don't realize that a coin isn't dead until it runs out of hash rate.

iXcoin is now #3 (sometimes #4) in network hash rate among all coins (BTC included).
2991  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IXC To Start Trading on BTC-E! on: January 05, 2014, 12:22:25 PM
Here is the long term price chart for IXC:

Data is from Vircurex, but it starts at 10/2012

Let me see if there is long term data on BTC-E trading for IXC.
2992  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IXC To Start Trading on BTC-E! on: January 05, 2014, 12:15:05 PM
The news is dated to '24.12.2011'  Undecided

Yup,  I realized that the original developer failed to even post this event in Bitcointalk.org

So I did him a favor and posted the news.   Unfortunately, it is 2 years old.

Anyway,  let's hope BTC-E re-list again.

Maybe if enough IXC owners demand access to their coins, then maybe BTC-E might re-open trading.

If we run a petition,  maybe perhaps.   You just never know with BTC-E.

Here is the BTC news that shows iXcoin started trading.

https://btc-e.com/news/46   -   Dec 28, 2011

This just shows you how incompetent the original developer was.

C'mon,  he got listed on BTC-E and he did nothing to develop the coin?

Anyway,  he didn't even bother to post the news here on bitcointalk.org.

So I did him a favor,  I posted the news about BTC-E trading IXC.  Unfortunately,  2 years late!!

2995  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: January 05, 2014, 11:55:39 AM
Is your guess a good number of IXC are in the hands of BTC-e.com?
If so, me being BTCe.com, probably I would not have restarted trading IXC too soon, just to avoid ex owners coming back to claim their forgotten coins. But now, we talk about 1 year ago. They had enough time to complain about their cleared coins.

BTC-e.com, welcome back your prodigal son  Grin IXC

If IXC starts getting volume in its exchanges then here is a good possibility that IXC gets re-listed on BTC-E.

It hasn't happened yet, but IXC has the hash rate to support a re-listing.

The other thing... CEX.IO also allows for trading,  right now they trade only NMC/BTC pair.  However, CEX.IO lets you deposit DVC and IXC, so there is a possibility of an exchange opening up there too.
2996  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Thread: AMT on: January 05, 2014, 11:52:24 AM
Here's why I ordered from AMT.

I looked at all the 28nm manufacturers at the time.

There was:

KNC
Bitmine
HashFast
Cointerra
BFL

KNC was not selling 28nm and moved to 20nm.  Their product was scheduled 2nd half of 2014 at $12,000 for 3GHs
Bitmine has demos and had a tapeout earlier than both HashFast and Cointerra
HashFast looked legit but I could not find an order date that would ship in Feb.
Cointerra has the best prices and hardware but, they were delayed, and I couldn't order anything that would ship by April.
BFL -  I didn't bother.

So clearly Bitmine was neck and neck with HashFast in their schedule.
Only problem with Bitmine was that they were European and I couldn't figure out how I could buy their stuff from the USA.
Out comes announcement from Bitmine about AMT
The AMT promise ship date was for Feb on 1.2 THs machines that were on par price wise with HashFast.

Right now, it is a race to get those THs systems.  The situation however in Mining is becoming similar to GPU mining.  With GPU mining nobody is releasing new hardware that an order magnitude higher.  They have hit the limit of speed and power consumption.  The same will happen to ASIC in the next 3 months.  None of the ASIC manufacturers will be able to sell 28nm cheaper than what they already sell it for.  At best $3 per GHs is the limit.

The benefits of 20nm is miniscule.  The KNC neptune system at 3THs requires industrial power requirements.

There are a ton of 200GHs 55nm products sold today, but these will plummet in price in the next couple of weeks.  So, if you want hardware that depreciates at a slower rate, then it is like 28nm because you can't get anything better.

BFL miners for example, who got their system really late were still able to profit because their units did not depreciate.   Many mined and even sold their units at the price they bought it at.  The same situation will likely play with 28nm miners.

That could be a possibility to have the coin restarted ant trade at BTC-E.   I do wonder though if a lot of investors have their IXC stuck in BTC-E!  Maybe they were to lazy at the time to move it out.  That was a very long time ago January 2012.  BTC had crashed the previous year and likely was at its low.

This is interesting because it does somewhat explain why I don't see any large older holder of the coin.

Could you do so analysis of the orderbooks of iXcoin on Vircurex and iXcoin?   How many coins are on the sell side for both?   This could give us a glimpse of what they call the "float".  If the "float" is extremely low,  then a pump can easily move the coin.

Actually, looking at Cryptsy https://www.cryptsy.com/markets/view/38 depth chart.  The only big seller is at .0003 which is nearly 100% from where it is now.
2998  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: January 05, 2014, 01:34:01 AM
Dear Ixians,

I think it's time to open up to the world. This coin now lack nothing important but advertising. We have really to think how to make it known to the world. Youtube is a good start. But we need more. I think we need to create a frame.

Just taking example from other coins, we need:

- videos: a great quantity
- open up topics in forums
- develop apps for android / iphone
- new wallet 0.8.6 on Windows
- a even more outstanding website, with a news section updated at least twice a week and more languages
- more bounties and giveways
- more people ready to give their time or/and donations
- a website where we can start trading items using ixcoins
- constant presence on websites like ebay
- a new coin logo made with maya/photoshop or a similar program

In other words, Ixcoin needs:
- programmers helping FrictionlessCoin in creating new features and tools
- people updating and keeping fresh the website content
- a group of people taking care of a online icvoin market
- translators
- benefactors offering donations in ixcoins
- designers for a new logo and ideas
- maya/photoshop experts
- video makers
- ios / android programmers
- people spending their precious time in contributing to this forum and the one in ixc.boards.net
- people inviting other friends to know ixcoin on facebook, twitter, etc.
- new investors
- new pools
- new exchanges
- promoters of ixcoin on ebay
- people giving their own good ideas on how to accelerate the growth of the coin

I do not consider all the points written above as a wise pattern to follow, but a must if we want have a even more successful coin.

Thanks for the ideas.  It'll take time, but we are building on a solid foundation.

I'm in for the long haul.
2999  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Thread: AMT on: January 05, 2014, 12:58:05 AM

who else... what hardware vendors are running a total scam?

All the ones you didnt list. For obvious reasons, Id rather not link them, but to name just one of countless, remove spaces:

Maybe you should come up with a list?

There's a lot of interesting stuff that we would like to be able to test out.
