301  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: ASIC Avalon Batch #3 - Payoff Speculation on: May 06, 2013, 05:27:36 AM
If i could get a "deal" on it, couldnt i mine a different SHA256 coin with a lower difficulty and convert it on Vicurex in order to pay it off?

and in the mean time pray that the difficulty doesnt skyrocket any faster than it has from January - May....
302  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / ASIC Avalon Batch #3 - Payoff Speculation on: May 06, 2013, 04:33:48 AM
Litecoin miner here....Ive got a contact who offered to sell me his Batch 3 Avalon for 14,000USD.
I'm just looking at the long term risks of this. Bitcoin appears to be here to stay. Assuming that by the time Batch 3 hits, (probably August/September) the worst case scenario for me would be the difficultly can possibly quadruple from 10,076,293 to 40,000,000. At this rate, with a conservative price of $80USD/bitcoin it would take roughly 8 months to pay off. Thoughts? I realize this is all speculation, but how much are these things going for a the moment?
303  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I want to eliminate my monitor in Windows 7 on: May 05, 2013, 01:33:08 AM
There is a way to bypass the login screen and i can put a shortcut to cgminer in the windows startup folder to make cgminer start on boot. I can check my pool from my main computer to verify that its hashing so i can eliminate my monitor all together. Ive tried turning off the monitor while hashing it dies after 1 or 2 hours. How can i change windows 7 to not require a monitor be present and continue to run the GPU?

To make windows startup without a startup screen, remove PW for default user.

Ive let it run to 10000 accepted hashes with a 7970 without going dead. i turn the monitor off and check it 8 hours later and its showing DEAD. Something changes with Windows 7 when you turn a monitor off.

I pulled pin #16 out of my DVI plug to fool Windows. Its been off for 6 hours now and still hashing.

you dont need a monitor, only time i had a monitor on my rig was when i installed windows
if you need remote tools try teamviewer

So why does my GPU show DEAD in cgminer if my monitor is off for more than a couple hours?

Try this guys. Getting 615-650 with it. Powercolor 7970 + Catalyst 13.5 Beta drivers.

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp//coinotron.com:3334 -u Waramp22.Desktop -p XXXXXXX --intensity 13 -g 2 --thread-concurrency 8192 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-fan 65 --auto-gpu --no-submit-stale

Donate if it works!  Wink LRcHY7HoCUXfEeDdSjeeMPrV7esmf6ETa1

EDIT: It auto adjusts my gpu and ends up with 925 core, 1730 mem clocks.

Set your memory clock as high as you can get it without crashing, set your core clock at (memory clock * 0.605).

I tried setting this, 1375 *.605 = 831Mhz on the engine and my hashes dropped to about 420khash/s, re-upped to 1Ghz and it's hashing at somewhere between 480-500kh/s.  Sad

Are you running a batch file? if so, post it i might have something that will get you some more speed.

Anyone getting good hashrates running a 7970 + cgminer + Litecoin?

Ive been having nothing but trouble trying to get consistant hashing over 550kh/s. I can get 650-700 for 20 minutes and then i get drivers crashing. Windows 7 64bit. Temps are below 80C on the GPU and below 90C on the VRM. Ive run furmark for an hour straight to rule out it being a bad card. Ive tried many different driver setups, 2 fresh installs.

This might have something to do with it...

Please list the catalyst version you are running, amd app sdk version, and your command line for cgminer + hashrate.

Im willing to pay in litecoin for a consistant 700kh/s.

Nothing wrong, You're using IE. Please Upgrade your browser Tongue

But its on my mining machine, the less crap i get on here the less i will want to use it for everyday things. Thats what the laptop is for. Welp, Firefox it is.

Been running now for about 30 days with absolutely no down time. Settings are as follows:

Diamond HD7970 (7970PE53G)
Stock core voltage (seems to crash when voltage is lowered for me)
Core Clock 1150
Mem Clock 685

Those are some core and memory settings. Can you post a screenshot of your config file + miner + GPU-Z?
312  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why I think Feathercoins will be a succes on: April 27, 2013, 07:02:26 PM
Once a front end program comes out, there will be enough room for 500+ currrencies. Of course we dont need that many, but what is stopping people from competing and improving. Look at how many credit cards there are.

I predict that the "front end" program or wallet will accept any currency. It will be used with NFC technology in phones. Without a front end program, all cryptocurrencys are anchored to online purchases, or purchases where a product has to be shipped or where there is a delay. If the confirmation time takes more than 10 seconds, cryptocurrency will never be used in day to day purchases in real life. (yes, that means out side of your house) A debit card or visa takes 5 seconds, and that still too long somedays.

One more thing, cryptocurrency will be deposited into the wallet, and from there it will be spent without needing confirmation. Sort of like depositing money into paypal before you make a purchase, it confirms that paypal has the money, not your bank account. This is the only way to get around confirmation times.

Wouldn't such a wallet which didn't need confirmations and acted like paypal, defeat the purpose of a non centralized currency? Then the paypal-like-wallet will also charge transaction fees etc

No because it doesnt have control over it. Its just a tool. Paypal does not have control over the USD. The government does. Paypal would charge a fee but how else are you going to eliminate the confirmation time that is holding cryptocurrency back?

317  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Would you buy dried fruit for bitcoin? on: April 25, 2013, 03:40:46 PM
I will not. Because bitcoin transaction takes some time to confirmed and I do not want to spend too much on transaction fees to buy dried food. Maybe something else more in value...

Dumb question...i thought one major advantage of bitcoin is that people could send it from peer to peer virtually free?
(bypassing all conversions, exchanges, transaction fees and taxes)
318  Other / Beginners & Help / Auto-Restart after driver crash? on: April 25, 2013, 03:26:50 PM
I am pushing the limits with my 7970, and i have it tuned to where it will mine for 1-4 hours above 700khs but i havent quite found that sweet spot yet to where it can be left for days on end. It will run for a while and then the driver will crash. I run a batch file from cgminer, and was wondering if there was a way to make the computer auto-restart after a driver crash? I would then be able to put my batch file into the the startup menu in msconfig and be able to auto-restart my cgminer after each crash.

Yes, i know this is not healthy for the GPU, and i am trying to find the sweet spot to where it will run for weeks on end but it takes time. (waiting for it to crash)

The reason i want to do this, is because if im at work and noticed it crashed (by checking the pool) I wont get home to restart the computer and cgminer for 10 hours and it costs me money.
319  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newb Questions on: April 25, 2013, 03:19:18 PM
responses in line below

1 - If my computer crashes, and wont restart (its dead) how do i get back into my wallet from a different computer?

if you only stored it on that computer I don't think it's possible to restore.  Please see this link: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet

2 - I have "encrypted" my wallet, and set the password, however it still lets me log into it without any authentication at all. Is the password only needed to send money - as in anyone can view my wallet by clicking on it?

I think it's public how much each bitcoin address (public key hash) has in general.  If somebody gets access to your wallet.dat they will be able to see all the bitcoin addresses in the wallet but not spend without the password to obtain the private key necessary to spend any bitcoins.

3 - After you mine coins, your pool pays you out after a certain amount. Would you reccomend to leave it in your wallet until you want to sell it?

Bitcoin wallet's are supposed to store coins (that is one of the goals of the system.)  It's recommended to secure your wallet using this method before accumulating coins from any source.
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet

4 - Can you "store" money on an exchange such as btc-e or mtgox until you choose to sell it? or is it only meant for current orders like a stock exchange?

4 - What is the most efficient way to convert cryptocoins into currency or a into paypal account?

sell to peer that you know.  Otherwise mtgox.

5 - Has anyone every sold crypto coins in person? (AKA Craigslist) I think this would be funny. Meeting someone in person, handing over cash to a guy, who then opens up a laptop and sends you crypto currency.

See above.

1: Backup. Keep a copy of your wallet (just like all other important digitial information).

2: Spot on. Password only needed for sending.

3: Keeping in wallet seems like a good idea to me

4: Yes you can keep BTC in your account on the exchanges

5: Not me.

If you've not already seen, then https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page is a source of info.

Thanks guys, you have both been very helpful.
