304 Other / Off-topic / Re: Is the Federal Reserve Bank a Public Bank or a Private Bank? on: March 28, 2011, 10:25:35 PM
There has been discussion regarding the public/private status of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank. I am interested to learn how this idea is perceived in this community. If you think I have the question wrong please feel free to re-frame the question.

Full disclosure: I am of the personal opinion that the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank operates effectively as a privately owned bank.

It is a little bit of both. The Federal Reserve has a Board of Governors who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. However, they serve ridiculously long terms, 14 years if I recall correctly. And they make their decisions in private. They have 'congressional oversight', but basically all that means is congress gets to see the end result of their decisions.

So, in this respect the Federal Reserve (the Fed) is like the United States Postal Service, in that it is managed by a Board of Governors appointed by the President and confirmed by Congress, yet none of the employees work for the federal government.

Yet, to keep the United States Postal Service accountable to the public we have the Postal Regulatory Commission. The Federal Reserve has no parallel public accountability. The Government Accountability Office does limited audits of Federal Reserve System banks but is not allowed access to review the actions of the Fed's internal Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), or the Fed's interactions with other central banks or foreign governments. This is strange since it is actually the FOMC that sets monetary policy... There is no public accountability for this central responsibility of the Federal Reserve.

Correct. The Federal Reserve has never had a full congressional audit. And the GAO audits are pathetic and mostly useless.

Actually, that's a false flag. The president does appoint the board members, but can only choose them from a very short list provided by the sitting board itself. He cannot, for example, choose his favorite econ professor. As for the Senate, they can only vote yes or no; and if they vote no, then the President must go back to that same list.

What is your source on that claim? Also, that brings up the question, who decides who is on the list?

In conclusion: Don't believe everything you see on the Corporate Mainstream News.

I have a better advice: just don't watch corporate mainstream news. Especially TV.

Pictures are most often selected, edited, sometimes scenarized. They are misleading.

Also: now when something happens at 10,000 miles away, you know it immediately, as if such an event had direct implication in your life. Usually it doesn't. The result is that you get anxious for no reason. Just turn your TV of, dump it or sell it, whatever. Just take care of your own life first.

Agreed. Turning off the idiot box is really the best solution.
310 Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Governments and Bitcoin on: March 27, 2011, 11:54:41 PM
Nice try.

But let's wait and see what happens when BitCoin takes off. Do you really think government will welcome it with open arms?

Depends on the rhetoric swirling around in the bitcoin community at the time. It's possible that we could sell governments on the idea if we undertook to do so. Though bitcoins are a cash analogue, they are ultimately more trackable due to the existence of the blockchain. If a government were to get ahold of a mapping of addresses to identities, calculating tax owed by an individual from bitcoin activity would be as simple as mining the blockchain for data. If a country moved to using bitcoins exclusively as legal tender, they could feasibly replace most of their tax departments with a computer program.

At that point I would stop using bitcoin and I'm sure many others would too.

Any chance of changing away from this type of system into a reddit-style system where entries are voted up and down? This forum's style of data presentation seems a bit old-fashioned these days as the got bits get lost in the ho-hum bits Smiley
Oh No, Please don't!
I hate the social-media type of crap that is more and more infecting the internet!

Agreed.
312 Other / Politics & Society / Re: "Anarchists" rioting in London on: March 27, 2011, 11:14:04 PM
Anyways, back on topic. Most of the Anarchists you see breaking stuff and the like are probably police provocateurs. Police officers were caught red handed dressed in 'anarchist' attire and doing destructive things like setting things on fire at the Toronto G20 protest. They were outted when protesters started noticing they were wearing the same police issued combat boots as the riot police. When protesters surrounded them they jumped behind police lines. It was later admitted in a press conference they were indeed undercover cops. This is a VERY common tactic used to make a protests seem illegitimate. Same thing happened in London with the Muslim protests, the ones where 'muslims' were holding up signs saying things like 'kill people who say islam is evil'. But if you look closely, you'll notice every violent and offensive sign was written in the exact same hand writing(meaning ONE PERSON made them all), and everyone holding one has their face covered. You can google image search 'london muslim protests' and see for yourself. Governor Walker also floated the idea during the Wisconsin Union protests to use provocateurs to make the protests seem illegitimate, he was caught saying this on a recorded phone call.

In conclusion: Don't believe everything you see on the Corporate Mainstream News.

So, its the login to an account? Can I change the password in a way that the originator can't regain access?

Yes you can change the log in and information(e-mail/secret question) before you let the BTCs go on ClearCoin. Smiley

I'll also give you the e-mail address and password that I'm currently using for the Steam account, because you may need that to change the e-mail. And I only created the e-mail(Steam didn't like my hotmail address for some reason) to sign up for steam, so I've never used it beyond that.

(and yes I'll take 20BTC at this point)

315 Other / Off-topic / Re: Anime Fans Unite! on: March 27, 2011, 11:54:53 AM
EXCEL SAGA! the best animes are
nausicaa - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8704790173215648057#
ghost in the shell
lain

Those are three nice animes but they are way too "serious" for my taste. I actually don't even like ghost in the shell. "Serial experimental lain" is good but basically the opening is my prefered part in this anime. The rest is just ok to watch.

Excel Saga is an anime I like to mention because it is fun and out of the box.

PS. Here are a few others of my prefered animes:

* NHK ni yokoso
* K-On!
* Azumanga Daioh
* Ima, sokoni iru Boku (aka "Now and then, here and there")
* Nana
* Kino's odyssey
* Denno Coil
* Kamichu!
* Shinryaku! Ika musume

PS#2. I don't read mangas much (I prefer watching animes), but recently I red "Gantz" and it's pretty good, although the anime sucks.

here is some less serious anime i like
sailor moon
escaflowne
haruhi suzumiya
5cm per second
aria
ergo proxy
rah xephon
animatrix beyond, and the second renaissance
nge
genius party -dimension bomb
hack sign
angels egg
appleseed
perfect blue
vampire princess

I'd say Ergo Proxy is a pretty serious anime.
