3041  Other / Meta / Re: Spam reserved post, edit later to hit post quota is back on: July 26, 2022, 01:23:58 PM
Maybe we should have a rule that only the OP can add "reserved" posts into his topic and a bot should have a list of keywords and report the rest of "reserved" posts at sight?
.. Just an idea I've got now...

Edit: of course, if mods choose to not remove those, not much that can be done.
3042  Other / Politics & Society / Re: European Union looks to Nigeria for Gas to replace Russian supplies on: July 26, 2022, 12:56:27 PM
Whatever ministers from RF say, it is meaningless.

No matter who is telling what. Some are clueless and the rest are blatantly lying.

Now Gasprom has found another motif to cut the gas: an alleged problem with a turbine.
Russia’s Gazprom to slash gas to Germany, as Putin fosters uncertainty in Europe
I wonder where will be the end of this sad game.
3043  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S balance suddenly double on: July 26, 2022, 12:46:34 PM
but I guess that's a dark thought that haunts anyone who has a significant amount of funds in any crypto wallet.

Imho really significant amounts should stay on cold storage, not even hardware wallets - especially those you have to update online every now and then and especially if one is knowledgeable enough to set that up. Am I too paranoid?
3044  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tether, Bitfinex & Hypercore launch P2P app with Bitcoin LN payments on: July 26, 2022, 12:04:15 PM
Will you trust its creator and use it?

Unfortunately I don't expect it to get much traction. People will prefer the free audio-video calls, no matter how centralized they are and how much data is stored about them. So I expect the new app will be very far from Skype, WhatsApp, Teams, Google meet or Zoom. And I'm sure my list is far from complete, only in picking the really big ones.

And as the others said:
* not the shadiest companies, by far
* closed source, so they can claim anything

And my answer: most probably no, since the few people I do video call with already have their preferences (or requirement!)
3045  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: (beginner) Why a node should be honest ? on: July 26, 2022, 11:51:50 AM
Hi, I'm a complete noob and I start doing my researches about Bitcoin. The answer to my question is probably so obvious that it appears nobody really talk about it...

Why a Bitcoin node should be validing a transaction honestly ?

I mean, if I understand correctly, there are the miners who create the new blocs and the nodes who verify the transactions. But why should a node be honest ? What's the rewards for that ? Are all the nodes receiving a tiny fraction of the bitcoins which afterwards come to the miner's pocket or something similar ?

Thank you for your attention.

Let's say some nodes are not honest. What can they gain from that? Nothing.
The miners must be connected to honest nodes because if they don't they may get the mined block rejected by the others and lose the block rewards.
Since the miners are connected to honest nodes, even if some rogue nodes will try to propagate bad transactions, the miners' nodes will reject those.
Keep in mind that each node has its own mempool.
3046  Economy / Economics / Re: Yellen says economy shows no signs of recession on: July 26, 2022, 11:46:40 AM
Janet Yellen can talk BS as much as she wants. I don't believe that anyone with a brain is taking her seriously.

It's not about the party, it's not about lies, it's not about taking them serious. I've seen the same in the previous recession. The ones handing people's money will tell as long as they can that there's no recession and there will not be recession. Why that? Because they want people stay calm, go to their jobs, use their fiat. If there would be panic, the things would get much worse than "just" recession.

I do like to watch re-runs of the old Dante's Peak movie, I like how they show there how authorities tend to react in case of emergencies (no matter they're natural or financial).
3047  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [7-21-2022]Insider trading charges filed against CB employee on: July 26, 2022, 10:41:30 AM
For something to be illegal, there needs to be an explicit law prohibiting said action. In other words, someone needs to be able to know ahead of time that a particular action is prohibited, so they can act accordingly. For something to be unethical, they will need to consult with community standards, which may change from time to time, and may change retroactively. There are no due process protections when someone does something unethical.

While there are most probably laws for (actually against) that in case of stocks or securities, I am not sure they apply for crypto "products", since legislation (as explicit words) is wonderfully missing them.
However, the spirit of the law may include them and a judge may go by that. Even more, I expect that a company like Coinbase has an internal code of conduct for the employees explicitly prohibiting that (if they don't have that, they're incredibly sloppy); but I don't know how much do company rules mater in a lawsuit.

It's... difficult to say what's going to happen there...
3048  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 8220 Gang uses botnet of around 30000 hosts to mine crypto on: July 26, 2022, 10:34:18 AM
I did the math recently on a Xeon server, and it should be able to mine just over a dollar per month. Still good business if you have 30000 computers wasting electricity without paying for it.

Well, $30k per month is not that bad, after all.
And yeah, the number looks rather low, maybe the report didn't want to show overly big unverified number, especially as some of those computers most probably don't stay up 24/7 (however, since I do expect the numbers to be much bigger, I've done the math with those 30k computers running 24/7).

I've been preaching this many years ago: no matter what OS one is using, there must be tools you can keep on tray and show the CPU usage (I use that on both Windows and Linux). If one sees abnormally big and constant CPU usage, that must be investigated. Unfortunately few do that, few know how to look for that...
3049  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fork? on: July 25, 2022, 08:25:02 PM
You do realize that if the keys are broken, it doesn't matter _how_ much you mine... when addresses are compromised via quantum computers, theft of coins seem feasible.

What you're doing is like you'd be trying to "sell" anti-tsunami protection to the citizen of El Alto, ignoring the fact that if they're in danger to get hit by tsunami, they're pretty much hopeless already (with most of the world underwater, food shortage is probably their first problem and not the tsunami).

I was probably greatly inaccurate, but I hope it helps understanding a quite wide point of view here.
3050  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to raise funding for trading? on: July 25, 2022, 07:58:57 PM
I am doing trading since more than Four years and earning good  but i want more capital for big trade setups, so any pro trader please suggest me that how can i raise fund for my trading.

I know nothing about  fundraising so please guide me through this process for my better future.

Thanks.

Although @tranthidung has written some interesting things, I'll add my thoughts o that:
* I don't think that anybody on this forum will lend you money without collateral; it's too risky, no matter what you say
* it won't be easy to convince others give you money for trading cryptocurrencies; again, too risky
* even if you get somebody lend you money, it won't be good, since you'll be then under pressure to perform and, as said, that's how mistakes start piling up; even more, mistakes can make you lose your money and the loaned money, and then you will be in trouble.

So imho, this direction you want to take... doesn't worth it.
3051  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: July 25, 2022, 07:52:00 PM
Yes i heard that, but nobody can confirm that , maybe the telemetry can give us a little clue.

I don't think that something like that would be published.
Ferrari seems to have lately some hard-to-fix reliability issues and I don't think that they would admit this, since their customers - Alfa Romeo and Haas - may not be happy also...

I'm really sorry for Leclerc, I had better expectations from this year, after that great start they had... But yeah, this is not unusual for Ferrari Sad
3052  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What is the difference between a server and a node on: July 25, 2022, 07:39:37 PM
Although not a perfect explanation BUT

A node is what you are running on your desktop that you interact with at the desktop level.

What you are connecting to with electrum and sparrow are not the actual bitcoind software but another application that sits next to it so you can send / receive / see you balances.

I think that a correction is needed. While the example stands for Electrum, Sparrow is more versatile and it can connect to a Bitcoin node too.
(I've only done some tests with Sparrow more months ago, hence if I am wrong or I've misunderstood something please correct me).

To broadcast a transaction from a wallet to the bitcoin network, you can connect to a node, either privately or publicly, but I don't know why electrum and sparrow wallet used server in their network connections instead of nodes. I'm assuming server and bitcoin nodes are the same thing, but I'm not sure.

A Bitcoin node can run as .. well, a bitcoin node, which can already be seen as a server since it's offering its service to other nodes.
SPV wallets like Electrum or Ledger live need servers that are not Bitcoin Nodes (there are servers built on top of bitcoin nodes) in order to operate.
I hope this helps.
3053  Economy / Speculation / Re: Finding Bitcoin Bottom via EMA on: July 25, 2022, 06:22:45 PM
I think that you are overly confident in TA and this may lead to mistakes.

Never said bottom is in, just presenting different aspects in my posts.
I haven't bought anything personally as of now. So I don't see where I am overly confident with this idea. :")

I didn't say nor assumed that you said anything  Wink
I was just giving out a friendly warning just in case. If you already know that, even better (but you also know that it's not only you who reads this).
Also, I said "overly confident in TA", not in a certain idea. Like Wilhem said it here in a nicer way, TA should not be taken into account all alone. That's all.
3054  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is is possible to run a full node 24/7 with the PC on sleep? on: July 25, 2022, 09:53:48 AM
to run full node to help the network, but instead letting it running 4 hours a day (as I need my computer)

Thanks for clearing up the intended use case.

Maybe you already know by now, but I'll still write it down for others who might read this:
Make sure you stop nicely bitcoin core before stopping your computer, so the data doesn't get corrupted and you're good to go for those 4h a day, of which the first good number of minutes will be needed to catch up.
I don't advise "tricks" like putting the computer on sleep, then the node is not running anyway in such cases.
3055  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is is possible to run a full node 24/7 with the PC on sleep? on: July 25, 2022, 09:20:38 AM
To be clear, I can't let my computer opened non-stop (electrical energy waste, hardware running continously almost for nothing, and noise during the night). And it would be much better for node to run 24/24 then 4/24. I was wondering if putting the PC on Sleep or something would make the node run to go on continously, reducing the disadvantages of letting my pc working forever.

In order to act as a full node, your computer needs to run applications (bitcoin core), network, hard-disk and so on. That is possible only if it's fully running.
Since you cannot do that, then it means that you cannot properly run a bitcoin node.

Now, if you only want to do tests now and then, you can start it 1h before your tests, leave it catch up and play with it.
If you want to only use it for your wallet, please read my previous post.

Or, maybe you tell what you want to achieve (it was requested by others too, but you seem to ignore that), in order to get better advises, exactly for your use case.
3056  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [7-21-2022]Insider trading charges filed against CB employee on: July 25, 2022, 09:16:32 AM
I am not quite certain why it is only now mainstream media is considering this as news. Anyone who has been in the cryptospace for more than 5 years knows that all of the exchanges are guilty of this.

"Every uncaught thieve is a honest merchant". While we suspect the exchanges are guilty of this (and many more), not much was actually proven and afaik nobody was officially accused (charges filled) for this. And this is a news (much better than many news in crypto space tbh). This can be a good step towards normality and fairness (although we are very far from that and even the fact that only one person was found guilty is overly strange).
3057  Economy / Speculation / Re: Finding Bitcoin Bottom via EMA on: July 25, 2022, 09:08:23 AM
What do you think, is this correct even this cycle or we are about to see this fail for the first time?  Roll Eyes

Since one indicator alone can be misleading, since TA alone can be misleading, it would be no surprise at all to see it "fail for the first time", really.
I think that you are overly confident in TA and this may lead to mistakes.
3058  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is is possible to run a full node 24/7 with the PC on sleep? on: July 25, 2022, 08:56:20 AM
Hello guys! Is it necessary to leave my computer opened continously to run a full node 24/7 (because I can't do that), or is there an option to make it run even if I close the PC, or at least I put it on sleep?

If you are asking this kind of questions, I advise you consider using a SPV wallet, like Electrum.
Yes, that means that various servers might collect data about your wallet (link addresses), but your wallet will get up-to-date info almost instantly and you don't have to keep a node (and a computer) running 24/7, nor wait until it synchronizes if you've stopped it and you want to use it.
3059  Economy / Speculation / Re: Effect of Tesla bitcoin sale not significant on: July 25, 2022, 08:39:58 AM
Twitter is, yet again, unreliable.
If discussing the twitter deal

Nope, you've misunderstood me. The context was that on Twitter many were (incorrectly) claiming that Tesla bought high and sold low their bitcoin stash.
That attempt of buying Twitter (or whatever that was) is another story and it's off-topic here.

I heard that it could have to do with ESG regulatory compliance. Aka a transparent risk management framework.
He might have been forced to sell to lower the risk...

This sounds interesting, but I'm certain that another reason was to also have a good looking balance sheet.
3060  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What wallet supports signing message on mobile (Android)? on: July 24, 2022, 01:07:08 PM

Indeed, Mycelium supports that, but only for the initial HD wallet it creates.
Mycelium only gives me the option to "Verify Message" on Android, using HD wallet.

You must have been trying on another "account" object.
This is how it is in my case (only on the correct account) :
