30401  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: AntMiner S9 rampant speculation thread, have to be quick though on: May 23, 2016, 04:27:03 PM
It's easy to calculate: Suppose BTM releases a 10th/s speed S9 for $1500-$2000 in about 4 weeks, that would give you about 20 days of 25BTC/block mining, and then it would produce the same as an S7, so you would get about $300 month 1 and the you need 10-14 months to get back whatever you spent on it... IF difficulty either doesn't skyrockets or BTC price doesn't falls.

Although i said before this is a "hype" train i would compare it better with the Snowpiercer: a Doomsday train driving us nowhere but to our extinction.

The huge spike in last 2 days shows one should be really very concerned whether you can make profit with the new S9, if really the price is going to be around $200 per every 1 th/s.

You don't have to pay a crazy price. I surely won't.

@chiguireitor nice analogy...well, they had a few survivors at the end and snow was going away.
Actually, if btc fails it would mean that either Satoshi's idea of decreasing reward was nuts OR that market cannot adjust rapidly enough to such conditions.
If difficulty increases 50% by halfing and price stays the same, S7 will be nonviable for almost everyone, but the lowest cost people and S9 should cost close to $500-600.
I guess it means that much less people would mine.
Honestly, i think that bitcoin dev need to think about transitioning to POS.

I think we need a two coin system  one that is asic free and rides on btc .

The Gpu driven coin is designed to shut down if and when an asic is built for it.
The regular person anywhere in the world can run it a bit or a lot on pc's with gpus.
Quiet and low power it it is a 2 card or 1 card rig.

take the coin and keep some trade some into btc and cash some.

Leave btc to the big ass farms in china.

I have a good power deal  but not a lot of it. I can run the avalon 6's till they drop and slowly add s-9's or avalon 7's to replace them. most people cannot do this.

30403  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread May 11 to May 24? picks are closed!!.... prize = 0.40 btc on: May 23, 2016, 03:59:14 PM
Did I say someone kicked on the afterburners?  Sorry, I meant ROCKET ENGINES!!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Sheesh, hashrate is just frazy right now...

Well we knew it was going to happen as the s-9 would replace the s-7.

I think we hoped it would be next jump or the one after it.

The up side  it causes a crash and burn  keeping them off line starting   NOW!
30404  Other / Off-topic / Re: 2016, The Year of Bitcoin? on: May 23, 2016, 03:56:13 PM
The problem is that nobody will know what will happen with Bitcoin and that is the problem because there are still a lot of people that likes to use Bitcoin but the value have to change.
You already can see now that the value is not going to be that high this year so we have now to wait a bit longer.

That could be true. The price now is lower than what I expected early in the years. I thought the price now should be over $500.
Some people even thought the price would touch $1000 at the start of this year as we are heading towards the block halving.

This just shows that 95% of the people come up with fantasy predictions that can't become reality in such a short period of time.

yeah even if you account for the shift to ETH coin BTC would be at 540 or 550 usd.

I think THE 1.1 BILL  in fiat that is in Eth coin vs the 6.8 bill that is in BTC has really held people back from buying a lot of BTC.

GPUS back ETH coins
Asics back  BTC coins

To mine an Eth coin  you use a hdd or an ssd a gpu  a cpu a mobo all are from real companies with real warranties

To mine a BTC coin   you use an asic machine  from who? with only a 90 day warranty.

If I have 2 million to invest  The Eth coin looks safer.

Other factors 75% of BTC asic machines are in China mining another 10% in Russia.

So a week from today boom gone or not.

Eth coins  gpus are not going poof  , Intel or AMD cpus are not going poof, mobos are not going poof

So mining Eth coin is scattered all over the world in gear that is warrantied by major companies vs  mining BTC mostly in China and russia by gear made in china in russia.

As I guy that wants to buy and hold 1 million or 2 million in fiat of a coin whihc looks better.

Also upside
eth coin jumps from 14 to 98 = a 7x jump
btc coin jumps from  440 to 3080 = a 7x jump

what is more likely by August as a reaction to the btc ½ ing
30405  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread May 11 to May 24? picks are closed!!.... prize = 0.40 btc on: May 23, 2016, 03:34:35 PM
That spike is insane. In a couple of days we've gone from a solid negative difficulty to something like 3% positive.

Looks like it will be another roll over...

Up to now I've stayed away from eth mining. Now I'm starting to think about it, if it's not already too late.

Yeah  I have the solar array and the deal at my friends office.

So power cost is not an issue but this cheap power I have is about 11-13kwatts.  say 36th in avalon 6's just not much in btc.

2.7 btc a month  and the deal is spilt the coins so 1.35 btc  for me.

looks like we could get to 250 diff by the ½ ing.

204 this time
215 around June 8
226 June 21
237  July   4
248  July   18 the ½ ing

Oh dear this is beginning to look ugly. Today's high rate, 11 Hours in, is staying very High. I think we could do over 200 Blocks Today and if the rate is maintained we could see +5% this period....  Sad

Rich

variance Grin  not!

It has become really tough when you see just how much firepower they have under wraps.

Well I have my eth mining.

If one closes, could many? could this actually be the end of Bitcoin as we know it. will the difficulty be too high to continue the network? Sorry I do not know a lot about Bitcoin I just thought it would be good investment.

I don't think it could be. If I'm not mistaken, the higher the difficulties are, the higher amount of fees will be. CMIIW

I see two,or three diff drops out of the first four after 1/2 ing .

I see price staying flat.

I estimate that 800 ph is in China minting as we type here now.

Much of it is s7
30408  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Why is Ethereum actually the only cryptocurrency worth GPU mining? on: May 23, 2016, 04:14:00 AM
I failed to mention,I bought mobo's,RAM,CPU's way back in 2011 to mine BTC with GPU's,I still have 6 PCs left from those days.

All was ROI'd way back then, just put em the closet for a rainy day  Wink

Guess what...it's raining  Cheesy  That was about 2 years ago I put em up,they mined alts for abit after BTC went ASIC.

I sold my 5870's,6950's & bought a few 380's,gonna get another 1 or 2 very soon  Cool

BTW,DO NOT BUY GPU's ON EBAY.Just get new ones, the chance you take on getting a faulty GPU isn't worth it............I got a few in a row & I'll buy new from now on  Sad

If in USA buy new from Amazon I am a prime member they have a 30 day return policy pretty much very easy to,and back the card the first 30 days.

They also allow a longer return period during  Black Friday to January 31 st.

Don't know,if the coins will, still be hot this fall but time will tell.

And cards hold value my 3 hd7970"cards have earned more then 400 since apr 2nd.
30409  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How many people are going to stop mining because of Block Halving? on: May 23, 2016, 04:00:34 AM
OP may want to consider reading all the  threads around here of people convinced that the price of bitcoin is  going to soar as a result of the halving. Some of us believe the effect of the halving is mostly already priced in, but this is the first time I've heard someone worry that the price would go down!

The price of bitcoin has basically nothing to do with the quantity of miners. 99% of miners could shut down and it would have no direct impact on the price because the same quantity of coins would be mined - that is, the money supply would not be influenced in any way beyond the most subtle impact. We could argue about the impact on network security and the resulting price impact, but for the halving that's not really an issue since 50% of current mining is still a huge amount of network security.

Hmm, actually if 99% of miners did shut off at the same time it would be a massive problem as it would leave only 1% of the mining power to get the network to the next difficulty change and if everyone powered off just "after" a diff change it could potentially take 200 weeks (i.e. 100 times 2 weeks). And even then the diff change would be limited to a reduction to 25% of the previous level so even the subsequent diff change could take another 50 weeks. Fortunately I think it is very unlikely to happen.

You could have a 20 day period if the drop 33 percent.

30412  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S5+ and 5Kw Photovoltaic plant on: May 23, 2016, 12:40:37 AM
Hi all.
i want to use my S5+ who drains about 3.5Kw.
but my photovoltaic plant reach 5kw just for a few hours every day.
The power supply distribution over the day is like a Gaussian curve.
So, how i can align my S5+ power comsumption, to my photovoltaic plant???
there any software who is able to reduce hash rate and consequently power consumption???

thank you a lot!!

Does your plant use batteries?

I ask becuase a good 5kwatt plant running 24/7 will do about 1 kwatt for the entire time.

So if you had battery you could set the miner to mine at 2 th  24/7 .

Now battery is a p.i.t.a. So

If you track power with software you could run the miner at 3 speed changes a day
30413  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: BITMAIN!! Make a 200-400 Watt miner!! on: May 22, 2016, 07:19:25 PM
I like how quickly the "build rigs for home miners please" thread shifted to "just give up and mine altcoins instead".

yeah  well  this is what people did  to mine since no asic builder was willing to sell it to them.

No chips for a guy like you ..  No lower watt miner. prebuilt  nothing of note for more then 18 months.

The demand for a lower power miner was ignored .
30414  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread May 11 to May 24? picks are closed!!.... prize = 0.40 btc on: May 22, 2016, 04:24:58 PM
Someone's kicked on the afterburners again... hash going through the roof!  Shocked

Lets wait big longer whether its just miners getting really lucky now or real added hashrate to the network. If the hash stays above the blue line for next 2 days, we could end up around +1% for the next difficulty. I would preffer falling bellow blue line tommorow though, suggesting the rise might mean just a good luck rather than added hashrate.

It is quite a spike though.  But as you say 2-3 days  will tell what it is.  It looks to me like the mystery 150-200ph has turned on again.

been doing it since  nov 2015.
30415  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hardware suggestions required on: May 22, 2016, 03:10:33 PM
Righty, I've been looking into dropping $10k on a custom project, and I wanted some advice. Now I'm going to come clean and say that the original purpose of this system is for GPU distributed computing applications, but I may dabble in mining as well at some point, since I have free electricity. Since I assume mining and DC are more or less identical when it comes to the execution of hardware setups, you guys would be the top experts on these matters.

First off, my limitations are regarding how much power my home's circuits can take, so despite free electricity, I still require high efficiency. It would be the difference between, say, 10 GPUs, or 11. Now, after browsing a few random threads here, I see that there are plenty of components that won't be found in a mainstream hardware store, such as the flexible risers using USB 3.0 cables, so I assume I'll come across hardware I may not have seen before.

At present, I'm looking at using two gaming motherboards with 6 PCI-e slots each (a combined total from x1 and x16 slots). Is there a better way? Can I use a single board to handle every GPU in some way, essentially having more GPUs than there are PCI-e slots? I've heard of PCI-e backplanes, but to my understanding, they require special host boards, and the costs involved with that would basically leave me with no cash to actually put a single GPU in. I've seen this crop up in discussions before. Does anyone have experience with them, and if they actually work for purposes such as this? Last I heard, they were around the $200 mark, so I figured one board with two of these would be cheaper than two boards, and the required CPUs and RAM. Plus, it would be more power efficient.

Now speaking of power, at this moment, the plan I have is to grab four of those 1600 watt titanium efficiency PSUs from EVGA. They are a little over $400 each, but are the most efficient mainstream PSUs to date. Keyword here is 'mainstream'. If there's specialised hardware lurking on this side of the hardware world that can output similar amounts of efficient power, and do it for the same or lower price, please do point me in the right direction.

Also, since I mentioned the risers earlier, I do have a question regarding their usage. What's the maximum length of the cable used? As I mentioned, this is a very custom project, and the entire system will be wall-mounted, so some of the GPUs may be located a little further from the mobo than they normally are in GPU farms. What are the performance limitations here, and are there any additional precautions that have to be taken?

do not spend a dime  without just going to this guy's thread.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1470700.0

you could get 4 rigs of 6 cards from him for your 10k.

you would have over 520mh in eth coin  I believe he would discount you

many other good ideas in this thread.  BTW your thread should be in Altcoin  since gpu's are for Alt coins.
30416  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: BITMAIN!! Make a 200-400 Watt miner!! on: May 22, 2016, 03:02:30 PM
Just don't spend a ton building ETH rigs from new parts, it is very iffy if you'll manage to ROI if you try that at this point.

(Unless, like me, you were planning to build the rigs anyway for other usage and are just mining ETH short-term with them to help defray part of the cost).

Yeah I had parts for 4 rigs  other then a lot of gpus.

So my 500 watt miners are my 2 card pc's

 http://www.ethpool.org/miners/3ef297e47404a771139472b93621f82c8a832857

And my entire setup was about 4k  due to all the parts I had on hand.

If you went from start  it would be more like 5.5k

Can I convert this power supply with gigamps board for an s7?  I could make it with high quality components for like 70 dollars if it works.  Please let me know

No not because the board fits or does not fit.

The psu does not supply enough power.

You would need two to run the s-7 not one.
