Merit transactions expire after 120 days. This just means that they received the 40 (or more likely, 50) merit from before 120 days ago.
Given that this was in early February, back when merit was undervalued, it makes sense that they would have gotten such high amounts.

Somebody is trying to become a mod of off topic section by posting with newbie accounts and then reporting them?  That would be pointless considering the effort it takes to make all those newbie accounts when you can go into any thread (yes, any of them) in Off-topic and find that most of the posts are garbage and deserve to be reported. In fact, I would even go as to say that you could simply lock the first page of Off-topic and it still wouldn't change the spam problem there, even by 1%. |

Perhaps before you familiarize yourself with merit you should do the same with the rules. Double-posting is disallowed, never mind the quadruple posting that you just did.
If you made useful posts or threads then you would get merit. And I don't mean a casual response that most people can whip up using a bit of common sense. Something that's actually concrete is what you need to make. Don't be vague and general like all the "bitcoin will rise" posts. Have some substance.

Seems to me that the user's trying to ward of scams and bring forth information to the Russian Local section. Now, the merit transactions are pretty hefty but that could simply be a case of people undervaluing their sMerit. It's odd that some of the 50-merit tx's were sent well after the introduction of the system but users can take breaks or be unaware of how they work. This was pretty evident during February and since members that stay in local sections probably don't look at Meta, it's totally possible that they would have undervalued sMerit even in early March.
I don't think the user is abusing merit per se though if someone has other ideas due to post/account history of the user + those that gave them merit then that would be appreciated.
It is suspicious but there's nothing really concrete enough to mark them as a merit abuser, in my opinion.

Mods are not volunteers. They are paid monthly for their service. Read somewhere by someone in the Staff that it's effectively like volunteering. Might have been wrong about that. I might be more active in fighting scammers if I was paid a monthly stipend, but for now I do what I do out of love for bitcoin.  Not sure how the mod payments work exactly (if they're based on the number of reports or what-have-you). For the individual, that is - not the collective. I certainly hope it's not a fixed amount since then there would be no incentive to work harder.

Yes, they are volunteers. Yes, there's a lot of work. But I'm still seeing the same pointless, redundant and general threads that have been around for months (which should have been locked/moved/trashed a long time ago). If we do implement something like this for DT it has to be foolproof. |
