Medvedev has had a fantastic tournament and deserved the win against Djokovic as it looked like Djokovic would run away with the match and win but to Medvedev's credit he fought back strong and won it in three sets.
The final between Medvedev and Goffin was good to watch, Goffin always seems to finish second in these tournaments as Medvedev won it in straight sets and looks to be a real danger for the top 3 in the US Open. Congrats to Medvedev on the win!
Wasn't able to watch the match, but with the way Medvedev he recover and won against Djokovic I have no doubt that he can win the tournament against Goffin, no disrespect to him, but it looks like Medvedev is the potential heir and will be the next batch of champions at we all know that the big three is already again. And with this win, he will be in the top 5, and would also be one of the favorites coming the US Open. Hope he can sustain this run and see other players rising to the occasion and challenge Djokovic, Federer and Nadal for the top spot. Medvedev has so far had a good month reaching three straight finals at the Citi Open and back to back ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, the Coupe Rogers and Western and Southern Open so he is in top form heading into the US Open and is someone who can really give Djokovic, Nadal and Federer a challenge and maybe even win it all. I am thinking about putting some money on Medvedev but I'll see just before the tournament starts as there could be more value elsewhere. I was shocked to hear about Steve resuming his play after being hurt and I guess he just came after an hour or so. They said he got hit on the neck too and so him coming back wasn't a wise decision at all. How the doctors even allowed him was surprising.
Now Smith is ruled out of the 3rd test match and rightly so beacsue he require rest and need to go through some test as well if all looks good. But on Archer part it was really not a sportsman spirit he had showned and as a courtsey he should have went stright to the Smith to check if he is fine like other England players had gone after he had fallen down. Yeah this was a big upset with Federer losing in straight sets, Rublev did it with ease which was not expected playing one of the greatest players of all time. Pant was given enough opportunities recently, but he failed. Now it may be time for the Indian selectors to give someone else a chance. MSD needs to be replaced sometime soon, as he is already 38 years old. At the most, he has another 1-2 years left with him. The selectors need to act quickly and needs to find a replacement before he retires.
In my opinion, MSD won't be retiring anytime soon which is a great thing due to the following reasons: - No suitable wicket-keeper worth replacing him currently(Pant is alright) - Kohli still cannot help India win big tournaments on his own(Relies heavily on MSD) - Though his strike rate has reduced, his ability to bat deep has helped save India on numerous occasions and a suitable replacement has still not been found If these 3 factors are addressed perfectly, I think he might finally retire in my opinion.
