3142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as Crypto Standard ? on: July 14, 2022, 02:31:33 PM
Shouldn't all crypto be backed by bitcoin ?
How could a "Bitcoin Standard" emerge?  For example, if you could pay for food service etc everywhere with bitcoin, would that be enough to essentially drive bitcoin as a backing standard ?

Since all this "crypto" is based on various free software... there's no way of stopping anybody from creating a coin that's not backed by anything.
Do you think that the exchanges care if the thing they're selling is backed or not? Well, maybe 1-2 exchanges from 1-2 countries.
And even if all would ban the not backed coins because of laws... one can make a new exchange, hidden, P2P where people are allowed to exchange again not backed coins.

So no.. it's not possible. Also it's likely that you have misunderstood both bitcoin and the other cryptocurrencies (and the relationship between them).
3143  Economy / Goods / Re: Stainless steel Bitcoin Recovery Seed Plate on: July 14, 2022, 02:24:48 PM
Hammer and marker can buy at any hardware store (or look in your toolbox). I don't think that a piece of this inox plate will also be difficult to find.

I find willi9974 set more a collectible set than something I'd mess with. I may have odd taste, but the plate with the mount, the HOLD Hammer and marker seem to ask to be shown, not hidden away.

If I would ever have good reason to store the seed on steel, I'd probably go for the washers, really. Your setup looks complicated. And complicated usually asks for troubles (in 10 years, not now).

could use it to put a private key to an address you dont fund then Smiley then it could be displayed. just never use that one lol

Indeed, also an option! Just then we switch from realm of bitcoin collectibles to... maybe (modern) art!  Cheesy Cheesy
3144  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can trading be likened to gambling and how so? on: July 14, 2022, 01:50:58 PM
Are you trying to imply that  sport betting and the chances to win is borne out of a persons level of education? And also if sport betting is not regarded as gambling by some persons as you said, then why the inclusion in gambling sites.
Can you enlighten me about this.

Let's say there's a football match between Liverpool FC and Huddersfield Town (taken from this list)
If you would do betting (like in high/low, or maybe roulette) you would maybe bet on Huddersfield Town. But since you do an educated guess and know a bit about football, you'll bet on Liverpool and will probably win. (PS. Educated guess is related to how much you know about that topic, not about general education.)
Of course, there's a risk factor there too, but not that big.
This is what I was saying.

Why included in gambling sites? Because they love to diversify. On the other hand... did you see sports betting in a Vegas casino?
3145  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there any Specific Boards for newbies to Make Posts/Comments? on: July 14, 2022, 01:09:24 PM
Based on what I have seen in the forum. There are some Post that I will see some of the boards scared me to make comment, mostly Meta. Because I only see Sr/Hero/legendary members in that board.

You should not be scared by any ranks. Some have earned their ranks for knowledge, some only by simply being very old here (but not necessarily knowledgeable). Even newbies can ask or tell smart things, even legendary members can ask or tell stupid things and make mistakes.

And some of the threads I saw there are very good for me to at least make a comment but my fear is that, wether is is an offend to do so. So I want to know if I have restrictions on some of the boards to make posts and comments in the forum. And if there is please provide those boards for me so I will be properly guided.

As said there are no restrictions, just, if you create a topic, make sure you create it in the most suitable subforum, hence increasing the chance of being seen by relevant people (one example is that you better ask about mining in the Mining areas than in Beginners and Help).

Then... you should never fear of offending some. It's a free forum. Some get offended easy, some not at all, learn to care less about such things.

So as long as you are on topic, you don't repeat things already said and as long as you don't spam, .. you should be okay.
3146  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can trading be likened to gambling and how so? on: July 14, 2022, 12:14:58 PM

Sports betting is not seen by everybody like gambling. Sports betting means an educated guess. Gambling is driven by chance.

And something like this happens with trading too. For some, trading is an educated guess based on TA, news and other stuff. For others it's only based on "gut feeling" (i.e. chance).

So it depends on what you mean by gambling and it depends on which traders you are asking about; I expect those that treat trading like gambling not survive for many years in the business.
3147  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: btc - eth exchange on: July 14, 2022, 10:44:30 AM
I have about 1 btc in my account. I want to exchange it for eth. 20% off sale it is also possible.

+90 0534 059 3351 whatsapp only.

Let me guess, you offer the 20% bonus because you cannot withdraw from the alleged account or similar "surprises"?
What would be the good reason for not using any known exchange (of any kind) for that trade? This smells very fishy...
3148  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-07-14] JPMorgan Says Bitcoin Cost of Production May Be Down to $13,000 on: July 14, 2022, 10:40:34 AM
They posit that the change is consistent with efforts by miners to protect profitability by deploying more efficient mining rigs, as opposed to a mass exodus by less efficient miners. They also say it could be seen as an obstacle to price gains."

... is it me or these guys' math tend to forget that more efficient mining rigs, if any, did cost money which has to be counted in for ROI in the rather near future (before the halving)?
Also, didn't the electricity prices go up pretty much everywhere?

I think that both the 24k and the 13k figures may be wrong.
3149  Economy / Economics / Re: Capitalizing on the strong US dollar? on: July 14, 2022, 09:21:11 AM
With a strong dollar would it be wise to scope a few percentages of like the Swiss Franc?

I don't know how CHF goes, so I'll take EUR as example.
1 EUR used to be 1.1 USD or more (I think it was even 1.2). So in theory, if you indeed trust that EUR will recover and buy now EUR at current ~1:1 ratio, you may get 10% return when EUR recovers to 1.1.. if it ever recovers.

Since we're on a bitcoin forum, I'd add that there are good chances one would earn more and in a shorter timespan by buying bitcoin while current "crypto winter" lasts. But please don't take as a financial advice, please do as you think with your money.
3150  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Celcius Already File Bankcruptcy on: July 14, 2022, 08:46:16 AM
It's a pretty much expected development, for some weeks now. The only unexpected part is that it took this long.

As we keep telling, "not your keys, not your coins".
I pity the many who have handed out their money for the mirage of earning some more cents, since I expect those need their money the most.
Oh well, people have to learn in a way or another...

PS. It's called Celsius, not Celcius.
3151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hardware wallet demand increases in 2022 bear market as exchange scramble on: July 14, 2022, 08:14:31 AM
The more known bitcoin becomes, the more the threats against users' funds.
Also people start becoming aware that keeping their funds on custodian services can easily be a bad idea.
And we, here on bitcointalk, suggest a lot the use of HW, since most people are not technical enough to properly safeguard their funds.

So this development is, by far, not a surprise.
3152  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help needed with Blockchain.com, please? on: July 14, 2022, 08:09:09 AM
Thank you. I'll have a look at Web Wallets. How do I move it to Web Wallets? ...I am terrified of moving the BTC in and then not being able to move them or get them out again.

It's not the Bitcoin that has to be moved to web wallets. It's this topic that should be moved. See bottom-left link "Move topic".

As said, your bitcoin should be used with a better wallet, like Electrum (just make sure you download it from https://electrum.org and verify it)
If you have the private keys it may go easy, you just restore your wallets directly in Electrum and no need to ever touch blockchain.com again.
(I didn't understand what is the "cold storage" you think you're using and where you get the private keys from, so maybe I've got part of my answer wrong).
Make sure your computer doesn't have viruses.

Also, if the amounts of money there are significant, consider buying a hardware wallet, generate a new wallet on that one and transfer your funds there.
And if you have questions, ask here, one by one, until everything is cristal clear.
3153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: James Webb & Bitcoin/ Sending bitcoins to the first alien on: July 14, 2022, 07:59:43 AM
Bitcoin is not a physical thing, we can send it in space.

Actually in order to actually have the alien get to use bitcoin he will have to be connected to Earth's internet.
Until that is achieved, anybody claiming to be sending Bitcoin to aliens (in a digital form) can easily be seen as scammer.
Ah, and one more small technical difficulty: did we find any aliens yet?
3154  Economy / Services / Re: LoyceV's Avatar for Rent [first 🦊🦊🦊3 YEARS🦊🦊🦊 (171 weeks) rented out] on: July 14, 2022, 07:43:33 AM
That's not a 30 minute exercise.

It's not. It's part of a list of overly easy exercises to be done (all together) and should not need more than 30 minutes (all together).

Here, screen time is strictly controlled nowadays, and has to be earned with good behaviour. It makes things better for all of us.

Trying to get there, but not there yet. It seemed to work while there was school, it seems to not work as good in the vacation. Still working on it.

I just tested: they couldn't recognize the Woody Woodpecker laugh. I'll add it to my list.

Tom & Jerry, Pink Panther, Woody, Popeye, ... there's quite a list of great cartoons.
I also found out that's a good age for Laurel and Hardy movies Smiley
3155  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 1BTC (69,000 loaves) ≠ 1BTC (20,000 loaves) if Bitcoin is a currency on: July 14, 2022, 07:36:32 AM
If you acquire Bitcoin as an investment, and you are going to HODL it for a long time, I understand that you repeat the mantra that 1BTC is 1BTC.

Indeed, this 1BTC = 1BTC is pretty much similar to "unrealized loss is not loss" (unless you sell).

Tautologies are apparently evident true statements, but if we stop to analyze them, they have many nuances.

The universe is not the same in (any) 2 different moments. So unless in some very strict mathematical (abstract) setup I would not be surprised if none of those tautologies stand.

Now related to the title... this is much more complicated imho. It's not only the fluctuations in Bitcoin price that matters, it's also the country. Because 69k loaves in your country may have been 280k loaves in another country. However, I do get your point and I also feel that this wild fluctuations in the price, while they do bring Bitcoin into the news (especially in the bull runs), they are a barrier in getting it used globally as a currency and also as a store of value.
Many (or maybe all) institutional investors advocating buying Bitcoin, the investors that should drive global acceptance are in trouble now and pretty much silent, since even if it's unrealized loss, it still looks bad on the papers.
So while I do tell that 1BTC=1BTC, indeed, the context matters, hence you're right.
3156  Economy / Services / Re: LoyceV's Avatar for Rent [first 🦊🦊🦊3 YEARS🦊🦊🦊 (171 weeks) rented out] on: July 14, 2022, 05:28:29 AM
I tried today: 3*3, and got answers varying from 6 to 10 or 11.

You must be joking. I had with one of them that kind of problems with 8*9, but never with 3*3.

Question 1:

Find the required nonce and extraNonce which results in the double SHA256 of this block header being below the target. You have 10 minutes.

Actually Q1 was "Write the following numbers as words: 18, 24, 38, 55, 83, 99".

How old are they? Primary school?

9 and 11.

You can't forget absolutely everything on math. Personally as a kid, it was a pain in the ass to study in summer.

I had my surprises during the past years, so I know what I'm talking about.
Don't trust, verify. They've done their paper next day, I was happy (actually pleasantly surprised) with the outcome and we were good again.

Do kids watch TV nowadays?

If they don't have iPads unlocked all day, cartoons on TV are just the next option.
When they are no longer allowed at TV, they get to play actual games.

It feels nice being the last "batch" of kids who grew up with cartoons, live action series, MTV, old-school YouTube, javascript and css free pages instead of Instagram, Tik Tok, Fortnite and trap.

What went so wrong?

What went wrong seems to be parents' lack of time and the easy solution of iPads and consoles.
However, I try to show mine now and then older cartoons (they do like Woody Woodpecker) or older games (TIM, Warcraft2). But it's inevitable, they do go with the trend.

Oh no, I just noticed that your thread was flagged as a scam, but it's not. Please write to these moderators (

You should try to understand what you read. Use translator if needed.
Or you're just "playing a game" in order to spam the mods? You do have a history of trolling I see...

Freebitco.in - FUN Token Investment Experiment

It's nice to see such experiment, although i don't agree with your (over)use of colors Cheesy
I'll watch this thread. Keep us posted.
3158  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Cheap Node Self Hosting: Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD on: July 13, 2022, 03:24:37 PM
In that case, I would indeed blame the adapter. I've had several shitty microSD to USB adapters that disconnect when you look at them. I assume you didn't have this problem with the card in a phone, right?

It has happened with USB adaptors, not in the phone, although one of my phones has odd restarts for some months and a new microSD has cured it, but there may have been other reasons back then.

How about this: get a damaged laptop! They're awfully cheap, and for the purpose of a node it doesn't matter if the screen fell off.

No. Sorry. I just don't have the connections to look for such good deals.

Quote
Of course, but I already have monitor for that.
I have them, but it's annoying to hook up (especially with proper cable management that doesn't allow for quick disconnecting). Maybe a laptop with broken screen isn't the best idea after all Wink

LOL!

Why an external HDD, instead of replacing the internal disk?

One important reason is that I am not sure I'll be able to put it correctly back in place after opening it. Roll Eyes
Another one may be that it looks like there aren't big enough CMR laptop HDDs available.

Quote
[PS. I will need tips on how to turn off and on the screen of that ASUS laptop]
On: press a button.
Off: Try xset dpms force off. Or easier: close the lid, usually that turns off the screen.

Thank you. Under Windows closing the lid tends to get the computer into sleep mode, which is not what I want. If Linux shuts the screen off for me at closing the lid, that's just perfect.
I'll write down that command too just in case.
3159  Economy / Speculation / Re: [2022-07-11] Bloomberg UK - Bitcoin Is More Likely to Hit $10,000 Than $30,000 on: July 13, 2022, 03:16:46 PM

We didn’t get a blow off top like we did in previous cycles so maybe we don’t dump as hard & deep as in previous bear markets.

This is literally the opinion I've had for over a year now. Unfortunately, it's just an opinion and theory though, even if it's relatively logical.

I thought the same for more than a year. And such thinking made the last price drop (from 30k down) pretty much take me by surprise.
Now I simply don't know. I hope for the best, but acknowledge the worse is also possible.
3160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Cheap Node Self Hosting: Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD on: July 13, 2022, 02:36:47 PM
I've broken cards in the past, but that happened by overwriting the entire card many times. The IBD writes all blocks once, and reads a lot of data, but it's only the chainstate directory I would worry about. If you're really going for a phone-setup (again: not easy but very cool), you could symlink chainstate to the phone's own storage.

I didn't break the cards, but the data was lost. Symlink is, however, a cool idea I agree with. (Also having Bitcoin core on a smartphone sounds overly cool!).

My assumption was the average phone battery holds about 10 Wh. It lasts more than 10 hours (especially with the screen off), so it can't use more than 1W on average.

From what I know it depends greatly on the usage. It's not the same if it sits in the pocket doing almost nothing or you play a game. It's not the same even if you have a lot of widgets refreshing all the time from the internet or not having them.
And I expect Bitcoin core will use some of that CPU...

Quote
[Also, fyi: that SH system I consider buying, with that Intel G proc, 4GB RAM and 1TB HDD is just a tad over 100 EUR].
I'd go for a laptop instead.

You really make it hard for me to decide  Cheesy

Quote
And I would not take into account systems that have own screen. There's usually no reason to buy screen for a machine supposed to run in unattended mode. Remote desktop - in a way or another - should do.
Somehow I always end up carrying a monitor for trouble shooting.

Of course, but I already have monitor for that.

Since I now know about it, I'd never buy an SMR disk again.

Indeed, lately when I look for HDDs I also check for this (of course, in case of SH I don't get much detail, however, read below).

Another direction which you may like more: I may be able to get my hands for free onto an ASUS Pro57V (CPU = Intel T5800, 4GB RAM) and then I'll just buy a proper external HDD and insert it into this baby (which now has an old school 500GB WD Black in it). What you say? [PS. I will need tips on how to turn off and on the screen of that ASUS laptop]
