Promising Altcoins

By Alex Kerya, September 1, 2014
Promising Altcoins

New cryptocurrencies appear every day. At the moment, there are over 200 of them and the number increases almost exponentially.  With this many coins, it is hard to find those that have any potential. Simply, numbers are overwhelming and do not allow for a clear view on the entire ecosystem. With this in mind, we decided to pinpoint several altcoins that show promise, at least, in our opinion. Furthermore, our hope is to provide users with tools that will help them wade trough the altcoin forest.

Tools

Several websites offer altcoin comparison charts. One of the most popular ones is Coinmarketcap.com. Although it gives valuable info about relative value of different cryptocurrencies, it does not provide a clear picture of all the altcoins available. Market cap represents the value per altcoin multiplied with the amount of coins on the market. The figure produced gives an idea of how valuable each coin is. Unfortunately, the website does not account for the popularity of altcoins or their usage. Furthermore, when looking at the values presented, one should look for amount of money traded, and the shape of the graph. For example if the graph is comprised from almost unbroken geometrical lines, this indicates small volume traded, and suggests that any price jump is most likely short term in nature.  Additionally, inspecting Bitcointalk thread gives a better overview of the market and enables users to understand how popular each currency is. Furthermore, analyzing relevant subreddit can be useful. There are many factors determining the price of altcoins, but the rule of thumb is that the more popular the coin is, the price will be higher.

Altcoins

Blackcoin

One of the first POS coins on the market. Instead on relying on standard Proof of Work in order to authenticate transaction blocks, Blackcoin uses Proof of Stake. Subsequently, users do not depend on miners providing network security, but can provide it themselves by keeping the wallet open.  Additionally, BlackHalo is a feature of Blackcoin, providing unbreakable contracts between parties. It is an innovative concept that might revolutionize the way we trade.

BitShares

According to BitShares, cryptocurrencies can be viewed as shares in businesses with an eye toward maximizing profits by producing the most value possible at the least possible cost.   These businesses have come to be known as Decentralized Autonomous Companies (DACs). BitShares is a step further toward creating decentralized companies with greater accountability thanks to the blockchain.

Darkcoin

Proponents of Bitcoin often focused on its anonymity. After the closure of Silk Road, it became clear that Bitcoin is not as anonymous as it was perceived. Darkcoin tries to restore anonymity and provide a reliable service to the users. By implementing DarkSend, innovation in the protocol that mixes coins and enables anonymity, Darkcoin became one of the rare truly anonymous solutions available.

Namecoin

Namecoin developers were interested in building a general data-value store. Namecoin leverages Bitcoin’s monetary-value store but focuses more on additional information which can be stored, such as a domain name system or an identification/authorization database. It is yet another potential use of Bitcoin protocol that might have wide application in the future.

Ripple

In Ripple, users make payments between themselves by using cryptographically signed transactions denominated in either Ripple’s internal currency named XRP or in arbitrary other assets (including real-world assets such as dollars, gold, air miles etc.). Therefore users and merchants can make transactions quickly and without effort. The Ripple system connects many major players in the finance world and creates a viable ecosystem.

Conclusion

There are many other currencies out there. When we look in the past and see the situation on the market for PC’s in the 1980s, it reminds of the current cryptocurrency market. Many competitors tried to sell their own PC brand, but in the end Apple and Microsoft won the market. Maybe in the next several years we see something similar happening in the crypto world. Until then, we should keep our eyes open, so that we don’t miss new Microsoft.

But, I still think we should launch a Web 3.0 service for MNs and have all adult content on it. The media and governments would love it. No more accidental images for children to see. Access controls for adult content. Search engines forced to pay MNs to crawl the network and a percentage of revenue to put up their adWords (fuck me we could make a killing just off that bit).

this is a really good thought !!
a Darknet, DarkTor,.... whatever network, but true
we can totally control any access regarding age groups and clientele
This is a 'positive' angle on a dark world i have NOT thought about

************ Alert ************

Great Ambrose Evans Pritchard interview about the state of the world financial system.

Ambrose recommends buying Darkcoin to protect oneself from worldwide financial collapse and Mayhem.

According to Pritchard, Darkcoin is unlevered base money, whereas Fiat is highly levered credit money. Says that when the Chinese and Russians toss their US T-bond holdings onto the tinderbox that is the current treasuries market, everything will go up in a huge bonfire that explodes a rocket under the a*ss of metals, commodities and cryptocurrencies - in particular Darkcoin which will eventually see numerical parity with Bitcoin.

Says that emerging markets have doubled their debt levels since the last panic of 2008 and that China deliberately created a "Bitcoin ban" scare back in December so they could shake-out large quantities of cryptocurrency to add to their "commodity lifeboat" which would serve as a massive airbag when the worldwide financial system hits the buffers.

Says that that event will occur at a time of their choosing since they hold all the (US Treasury Bond) cards but they won't be doing it till they've hoovered up enough DRK @ 0.00465 BTC.

Enjoy !!

The RC4 system has inherent issues that were documented in Jira, plus it also has a systematic risk to the network (Sporking is less risky than a hard fork, but there's a risk the network forks wouldn't actually go away when the spork was turned off after a failure). These few issues combined with the fact that we've reached 80-90% payment efficiency tells me that it's not worth the risk to the network to move from the RC3 payment system.

Also, I have a separate plan I've been considering as an alternative that carries no risk and can be done at RC5's launch. Basically, I would set a minimum protocol version and boot anyone not running RC4 or later off the network. This should get us to 98%+ payments.

why 98%+ and not 100%  Huh

Why Huh

My take is that development on core features (anonymity) is far more important than enforcing the last 5-10% of MN payments. MN payment issues have halted development on anonymity for 2 months and we kind-of paid the price for it.

Any voluntary or semi-voluntary scheme of payments is crap anyway (trusted system), so it doesn't matter if it is 85-90-95 or 99%. It needs to be 100% / trustless / non-voluntary. That's as far as the long-run is concerned. For the short-term, relieving investor pressure from people acquiring MNs and expecting to generate income, it was the right choice.

+1
i agree, we have much bigger things to worry about
MN's are getting paid, sure i wish i was earning more,

Darkcoin: Improving on all Stages
Armaan ChandnaniAugust 27, 2014Altcoins, Markets And Prices, News
For those unfamiliar with Darkcoin, you better start researching on it as it had begun a new era of anonymous coins in cryptocurrency which is arguably the reason for which we see many anonymous coins these days.

Coin Specifications

22 Million total coins
X11 Algorithm
2.5 Minute Block Generation
Decentralized Masternode Network
Anonymous sending with DarkSend+
Difficulty Retarget through Dark Gravity Wave
Darkcoin was launched at the beginning of the year, and the constant updates it has been receiving may be a shock to many who do not believe in altcoins. Being one of the few coins that has shown long-term promise, Darkcoin is definitely a great contender for the future. An interesting feature that was introduced into the altcoin market by Evan Duffield, developer of Darkcoin, is that of masternodes. The use of these is as a foundation for DarkSend so that all transactions running through DarkSend have to be routed through these masternodes which can be hosted by Darkcoin holders with at least 1000 DRK.

One of the most important features introduced by Darkcoin which has become a standard in many altcoins released in today’s market is their X11 hashing algorithm. Arguably one of the most overused algorithms after its release, innovation is what counts, and this hashing algorithm was brought by Darkcoin, and for that, credit must be given. In an interview with Evan Duffield, when asked regarding the creation of the X11 Algorithm, the answer was:

“X11 is simply all of the SHA3 candidates algorithms chained together. One of the side effects of having so many algorithms chained together is it makes it incredibly hard to run efficiently. This inefficiency results in much cooler running temperatures and lower power consumption even with the higher hash rates compared to scrypt”.

All of this being mentioned, a new version of the Darkcoin wallet was released a couple days ago. The RC4 version of Darkcointhe wallet brings many updates to the wallet itself, and many upgrades to the DarkSend platform as well. Updates to the main wallet screen and transaction are highlighted in this release other than many bug fixes that have been slowly taking place.

While many people have happily embraced this new version of the Darkcoin wallet, many have complained regarding bugs in the Darksend platform which seemed as a surprise to many, and this was addressed by Evan Duffield:

“From the looks of the thread all issues users are experiencing are not bugs at this point, just a misunderstanding of how Darksend works. All major bugs have been resolved and I’m going to move on to RC5 and other unique features of Darkcoin that we’ve had in the works for awhile”.

As it seems, most bugs have already been fixed and speculation regarding bugs in the DarkSend platform have just been misunderstandings regarding the way it actually works. However, there has been much talk on Darkcoin lately, and there have been concerns connected to the way the masternode network is handled. These questions have been answered but they must be clearly answered by the developers in order to eliminate any speculation. Darkcoin has certainly brought many things into the cryptocurrency world while keeping itself intact with constant updates. Yet, as with all coins, there will always be speculation regarding the coin, and whether its true or not, its something to ponder.

It's sad to see so much stupidity in action... The human race embarrasses me.

To see stupidity in it's most extreme lays bare it's nature as the festering spring of rot from which violence is born...
There is no stupidity. DRK is one of the last cryptomarkets where you can find a buyer.
So the last rats leave crypto generally.

Crypto seems to be dead. Greed and scams all day long have destroyed it.
There is a decling market over months now.
Ltc was gone from 30€ to 4€. Where do you think should new money come from?
All idiots have already been scammed and lost their money.
The lesson is that the non-idiot market is exceptionally small and vertical.

Ok guys,
can we please stop with the whining !!!
the prices is this, the price is that, the dev should do this and that ....
BLA BLA BLA
everything is on track, leave Evan alone, the man is deep into his coding (exactly where he is supposed to be)

you bitching about the price ?!
Well do something !
get involved, it is now on the community to get the next steps into place before open source, RC5 and everything else starts kicking.
Now is your time to be proactive
- Help out on Open Bazaar (thread on DRKtalk) to get DRK accepted
- Contact 'anonymous' suggest DRK to them
- Get in touch with people who might need and understand Anonymous Transaction (think about it, there are a lot out there)
- Contact these guys and see if they wanna be involved with us
http://en.rsf.org/reporters-without-borders-and-25-04-2014,46196.html
- Spread the word on social media
- .....
all of this , and mainly Merchant adoption of DRK would help us, you and the price a LOT
So get on it NOW
 Grin Cool Grin

We can't really start the push in earnest until the code is open-source. I'm sure merchants would love to adopt it, but a lot are hesitant because they hear it isn't totally open-source.

For the merchants open/closed source is a non issue. The only ones really "concerned" about that are here in our small crypto world.

Yes but you need to realize that concern gets passed on and becomes a 'thing.' When the code is totally open, that 'thing' no longer exists because people can see for themselves. So it's as if a governor has been removed from the engine, or a roadblock from the road.

I agree,
anybody who knows anything about all this
will be looking for open source. Which is fine and fair enough.
K Atlas (as known as he is) is doing it NOW,
so we are on the perfect right track there !
Nothing to hide !
