3161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trump tweet / Libra issues / Shortsighted opinions on: July 18, 2019, 11:21:19 PM
As we already know, Trump tweeted that he does not like Bitcoin and this was triggered by the threat that Libra pose for the US Dollar. I personally think his opinion is shortsighted and he is going to throw the baby out with the bath water, when he puts a blanket ban or strict regulations on Bitcoin.

He says his campaign is focused on putting America first, but he wants to restrict a technology that brings new innovation and new job opportunities to his country. He is also ignoring the advantages of having a new source of international capital flowing into the USA from Bitcoin tourism and also people buying goods via the internet and paying with Bitcoin at local online merchants.

Bitcoin as an investment opportunity has also created a lot of wealth for a lot of people since 2009, because the price of Bitcoin generated massive profits for the clever investor. <Long-term investors>

Bitcoin has advantages and disadvantages and simply ignoring the advantages would be a huge mistake. Let's show the Trump administration what the advantages of this technology is, before they make that mistake.  Roll Eyes

Trump never issued any ban on bitcoins his primary aim was to kill Libra, and it seems to me that his plan is working so far. In fact Trump has been smartly promoting bitcoin without saying a word, I’m referring to his decision of appointing an Pro Crypto Sec Commissioner. Bitcoin is never going to be banned in USA it’s only a matter of time before his government can find a way to legalise it.

Well as long as everyone understands the difference, then there is hope. The very reason Libra can disappear by getting outlawed should warn anyone thinking about investing in it. It is incredibly weak and unsafe, i don't get how people get allured by the creator or his companies, which aren't exactly examples of credibility or responsibility...

Something as delicate as money, people's hard earnings and savings, shouldn't be toyed with an altcoin that is so weak it can disappear overnight. The design of Libra is wrong and it was warned with plenty of time. Why the stubborn Zuckerberg went ahead with it like that despite the warnings from the community, that actually know what they are doing (and have a decade of experience, unlike him who has zero), should give you another giant warning.

Well funny thing about this whole issue is how some people are (finally) learning of the reasons why Bitcoin has value others can't get. Let this be a lesson also to the other centralized altcoins, they can be ordered shutdown, and that's it.
3162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fact checking Trump's claims about Bitcoin on: July 18, 2019, 11:11:20 PM
I agree completely. The best way to end this ignorance is by spreading education. What Trump did is repeat the same ignorance some others like him have done in the past, mostly because they don't know better or don't care.

And your points regarding drugs and Libra are accurate as well.
3163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a Form of Anarchy on: July 18, 2019, 10:17:19 PM

anarchy is always presented to us in the media or in movies/tv as chaos. But it does not mean chaos; "self-rule" or "emergent order" are less politicized descriptions.

To me Anarchy is a State-less form of government, ie. direct. In the past it was considered impossible on a large scale (beyond a small community or town) but with current technologies it could be doable...

While unrelated to Anarchy, there is an order within chaos, see Chaos theory. Which is why i don't like the misuse of both words Smiley
3164  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 owners DO NOT upgrade firmware to 2019 version, you will lose SSH access!!! on: July 18, 2019, 09:52:07 PM
Hi,
MigaoMiner: I had exact same problem, because my board is just missing chip for sd card. With this method you dont need boot from sd card. Just keep jumper in default position, connect uart bridge, disable ssh as described and then you can install another firmware like braiin os.

Jacoob007: as far as I know this is not possible at the moment. We can just hope that bitmain will change their minds and in next fw we will have option to enable ssh ...

There have been at least two releases in 2019 for S9 firmware from Bitmain and both are "signed" with ssh access closed.

There is a method to restore ssh access using an exploit in the first release. If you have installed the second release, it is possible to "downgrade" back to the first release, since both firmwares are signed. Then with the first release you can try the exploit. This uses proprietary code but is one way to restore ssh without physical access.

The other methods involves using the sd card, or using the serial port. Both require physical access.

The serial port method is a little more involved, and requires either the rj45 to serial cable or using the 3 pin header to serial. Then you can manually overwrite portions of the nand using an sd card; or manually remove the signed firmware check so you can downgrade or install another firmware.

Normally people would just use the sd card method, where this is done automatically when moving jumper jp4, but i guess you may encounter the issue of that missing chip mentioned before...

With the sd card method you force the old T9+ firmware, which in turn allows reinstalling the old S9 firmware (you can't just leave the T9+ firmware because it doesn't hash anything with that).

OR, you can boot Braiins OS from the sd card and optionally install that from its Web UI instead.

Ok lets summarize this:

Remotely via software (closed source):

3165  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Tuning antminer S9i/j/ lower power consumption. braiinsOS on: July 18, 2019, 09:17:09 PM
There are no risks of running at lower voltages. Eventually you will simply get no hashing.

Your aim is to match ideal actual hashrates, if you see the actual is low, you need to increase voltage OR lower the speed. Try not doing both at the same time. This has to be done gradually, it takes a lot of time, and every hashboard reacts differently.

I think the best efficiency with the S9 is around 80W per TH. The existence of bOS forced Bitmain to release a firmware that allows some limited tinkering, but with bOS you can achieve a better result, it only takes more time and dedication.

There have been people here doing 500mhz at 8v, or 475mhz at 7.8v. You may also get good efficiency at higher speeds but you will have to measure power consumption a lot. Apparently the S9j has the best yields to tinker with.

You may find better efficiencies at lower overall rate, such as 10TH/s. This means 3 such miners would consume less electricity than 2 running at 15TH/s, while both produce the same 30 TH/s. Of course the slower ones run colder and quieter...
3166  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Japan reportedly pushes "International network for cryptocurrency payments" on: July 18, 2019, 06:38:18 PM
One of Bitcoin's killer features is precisely international wire transfers. Bitcoin is actually faster than local wire transfers in many countries, and the fee is the lowest you can get if you don't mind waiting a couple of hours or days, which compared to weeks is a blessing.

There is also the annoyances tied with amount. You see, Bitcoin doesn't care. Send a few satoshis a several bitcoins, it takes exactly the same time an effort.

I don't know what Japan is pushing here, but it might be something alike ripple, ie, centralized and bank supported. They may back it with their (fiat) money, but it won't be any stronger. In fact its much weaker than Bitcoin's network due to decentralization.

That is, unless they open the software and invite people to become nodes, perhaps offering rewards too.

If they keep it closed how they like it, the people can simply ignore them. Especially Japan, one of the leaders accepting Bitcoin. Why bother with bank wire transfer when you already have your money in bitcoins?

3168  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: July 18, 2019, 04:47:11 PM
Hello Braiins
I would like to remotely install braiins on a DM1 g19 via ssh, using the dm1_g29-ssh tar downloaded from feeds, do you have any recomendations, I will follow the instructions as per braiins-os.org docs.

I don't see the SSH version, here is the image to boot using an sd card: https://feeds.braiins-os.org/braiins-os_dm1-g19_sd_2019-06-05-0-0de55997.img

You have to dd that image into an sd card, then set your controller J1 off, J2 on, insert the sd card and turn on the machine. It should start in bOS.

I imagine the current version has an option to install to nand using the web ui, but i don't own any Dragonmints.

Oh i see you can just use the G29 version, then go for it: https://feeds.braiins-os.org/braiins-os_dm1-g29_ssh_2019-06-05-0-0de55997.tar.gz
3169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road & Bitcoin ! on: July 18, 2019, 03:56:14 PM
I was wondering if Silk Road was one of Main reason that make bitcoin rise ..

Not really, and if you read the history, it was Wikileaks and not Silk Road that put it first on mass media. Besides Bitcoin leaves more traces and is unsuitable for these activities. Don't forget, the blockchain is public...
3170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Congress: Bitcoin Is Unkillable And Unstoppable! on: July 18, 2019, 03:51:51 PM
Since this is Unkillable And Unstoppable! they should adopt it as soon as possible because they are the only one we need I mean we need their positive statement and their acceptance of the cryptocurrencies so that we can see a massive movement of the price today.

After this statement, we hope that there will be more positive view of our very own bitcoin. in the near future, we can see a positive impact about it and the price will no longer struggling to get to $15,000 anymore. it will soon to reach $20,000 if they're just honest with one single positive statement it will really affect the price in a positive way trust me.

The best thing any country can do with bitcoin, is legalize it as parallel legal tender. This way merchants would be allowed to receive bitcoin or fiat, and pay wages in either.

Tourists for example wouldn't need to bother with bringing money and exchanging it anymore. Sooner than later bitcoin will become world's currency. Today several countries don't directly accept USD, for example, because its associated with USA. Bitcoin is associated to, nobody, therefore no country has any political reason to reject it. We can replace USD with EUR, RUB or CNY, same logic applies.

One of the major obstacles for adopting a world currency is always what country or group of countries are behind it. Well, with bitcoin that discussion doesn't exist. I wouldn't be surprised if someday the UN endorses it. Worldwide opposition is minimal, a mere 15 countries, and these will probably reconsider their mistake (after watching the wealth go to their neighbors).

Trump may think America is invincible, but he is quite wrong there, his policies can hurt her badly. To Bitcoin i wouldn't matter if they ban it (the world will route around it), which i don't think it would go well with the various States already regulating it, so i don't think it will come to pass. It is nice they have a good debate in there, knowing some politicians do know the subject gives good hope.

I think the Unkillable/Unstoppable comment is far more worth than Trump's "I don't like it". Besides, many new technologies people may not like at first, but they get used to it. Digital cameras, electric cars, smartphones, you name it. We can go to the past for several technologies that came and went with the exact same sentiment coming (mostly) from the same age group.
3171  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Is binance really the best exchange to buy crypto? on: July 18, 2019, 03:08:27 PM
Hey. We had a discussion about crypto exchanges and everyone was kin on binance being the best crypto exchange. WHat are your thoughts, couse I don't really like it much..

Being the most used doesn't necessarily mean its the best. Besides i still remember when people used to say that of Mt.Gox...
3172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Congress: Bitcoin Is Unkillable And Unstoppable! on: July 18, 2019, 02:10:10 PM
What do you think about this statement? Yesterday, at the Libra Facebook hearing, we heard positive bullish news for bitcoin and negative statements about Libra.
A Congressman: Bitcoin is Unkillable and Unstoppable. TV news already discussing possibility of mainstream adoption.  Talking about regulations and allowing emmergence of cryptocurrencies. They are talking about bitcoin and how mainstream could it be in the future. So they are slowly considering crypto adoption.

Well, what do you know, some politicians have done their homework. Best thing they can do is embrace it and see how to benefit from it.

As i have said before, Libra can be stopped easily, like any other centralized altcoin. But you cannot shutdown Bitcoin, as simple as that.
3173  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The biggest battle for Bitcoin's life is coming on: July 18, 2019, 01:49:08 PM
what will be the nature of this much anticipated battle? what could the target be during this cold war? price dump or pump? these and more are some questions that need solemn answers.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win” -- Mahatma Gandhi.

In over a decade they ignored and laughed at "fake money" bitcoin, now they enter the third phase. Seems to be progressing good...
3174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trump tweet / Libra issues / Shortsighted opinions on: July 18, 2019, 01:33:58 PM
The total cash money in the world is approx 6 trilion USD (6*10^12 USD, 6 000 000 000 000 USD). 80% of this money are USD, 10% Euro,
etc
There are countries in this world with almost no money (their people have almost no money). If we divide 6 trillion USD to 6 billion poeple on this planet we obtain 1000 USD for every man and women in this world. That is if every person in this world will have the same amount of money, they would have 1000 USD in their pockets.

We have products (books, clothes, food, medicines, etc), and we can not buy these products because we do not have the money. Bitcoin is a technology at the beginning, it is 10 years old, it has advantages (money sent in 30 minutes everywhere in the world, available to be spent in shops immediately they arrive) and disadvantages (money sent can not be returned if unsatisfied with the product, variable price).

When bitcoin was created the intention was to double the money that every person has in this world. This is not sufficient, but it is something that can make make everyone happier and healthier.

Redistribution of wealth must be voluntary, not compulsory. That is the line that divides tyranny from freedom.

As "unjust" as it may look, when redistribution is done by force (such as a socialist state would do) it creates even greater division, hatred and conflict, which ends exacerbating rather than abating the problem.

Yes it is unfair that i was born in a country that now happens to have monthly wages equivalent to 5 USD. But this is not the fault of the people from countries were 3000 USD a month is normal. Now if these people from their own hearts decide to give a little bit to help develop the conditions of these places (one way would be to invest in a business there that brings jobs and helps the local economy), that is fine. But if the State goes in to confiscate; i don't know 2500 so that "everyone earns 500" not only you destroy that person's willingness to give (or create wealth in the first place), but those who are supposed to distribute the 500 to everyone end keeping more to themselves than the guys that were earning 3000. So you end with state officials with, 18000 USD and masses of people with 0~10, in a destroyed economy where working 8+ hours a day, 6+ days a week will get you around 10 USD at most.

You say bitcoin was made to make everyone happier, but i think you are giving it too much social weight. It will, as a side effect, make everyone (investing in it) happier, because its a money that cannot be devalued arbitrarily by a government or institution. It is out of anyone's hands, no select few can game with people's lives anymore. Americans mostly don't get this because their fiat is devalued a mere 2% yearly, but if they saw it lose 50% in one day, i think they would get it. Unfortunately, it would be too late. Governments who do that, will never give you a hint, it just happens overnight: Boom, you purchasing power is gone by half. I know, i have been living it almost all my life, worsening the last 7 years (we currently have the world's worst inflation).

With bitcoin, you at least get a chance. You buy it or mine it, with the hopes to protect yourself from such arbitrary impoverishing decisions by the elite.

Already many Japanese have invested in bitcoin because over there, they apply the same foolish theory of inducing a 2% inflation yearly. How would America, "land of the free™" look to the world if they ban bitcoin while in evil countries like Belarus is legal? This is the kind of question you should ask Trump, he makes Lukashenko look protector of freedom...
3175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The biggest battle for Bitcoin's life is coming on: July 17, 2019, 07:29:51 PM
I don't know what to do if we see another bearish market. I am not ready to just wait for another year... Honestly, I think it doesn't make sense to hold when the price is going down. Why not sell when it's still high and then buy back when it reaches somewhere near the bottom? I have some money in btc, but I am afraid to draw attention by selling a significant amount of it, so I guess I'll have to wait or to hope for the best. I hope you're wrong that the worst is coming, and that actually it's just a correction that will be followed by further growth or at least by stabilization around $10k+. I think we deserve it after everything 2018th and the first quarter of 2019 gave us.

There is a slight chance for a bearish market (or correction) until the bull run towards the halving.

Either way is fine, 2020 the next halving comes:
Reward-Drop ETA date: 19 May 2020 09:54:35

After the halving a bearish market (or correction) seems more probable. Just remember that halving also means half production of bitcoins every 10 minutes. The market is getting less and less bitcoins as designed. Supply and Demand...
3176  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WeChat and Crypto on: July 17, 2019, 06:21:41 PM
Wechat has an electronic payment system if you are privileged enough to own an account in a Chinese bank.

Of course, crypto is in direct competition to their "service", so its like they are Chinese Paypal of sorts.

Other IMs have adopted their own custom made altcoins, but its more or less the same thing: competitive technologies that aim to do the same: Electronic payments.

And then there is their government stance. Chinese companies have to comply, period. You are not allowed to criticize the Chinese government using the platform wechat either, you'll get banned for it. They probably just added the crypto words to their flag detection system.
3177  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why don't US gov buy a trillion worth of bitcoin? on: July 17, 2019, 06:05:27 PM
I doubt the US gov would do that on an institutional level, even if some officials do it privately.

I believe, if any country, one of those small ultra rich Arab countries will make the move to "diversify" their already huge reserves. Those with the most money have the least to lose and the most to gain from "diversifying a bit" their portfolio.

As for the USA, make sure you study it. Its a federal republic, it may have some democratic elements but its not a democracy, and its not like they care or are wrong by choosing that way, it certainly worked in a time where everything around them was monarchies.

It certainly did better than the garbage "president is omnipotent" system over here...
3178  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Uncovering Bitcoin And Gold’s Not-So-Secret Relationship on: July 17, 2019, 05:54:46 PM
Bitcoin is simply better because it is decentralized. Because no matter when you invest in it, in time you will become richer

In an investment point-of-view, yes. For monetary point-of-view, yes, as gold is bulky and is harder to transport. But then again, neither of this things are the main uses for gold. For one, store of value is its primary use-case, IMO. Second is being a standard of value: no matter what era you are in and wherever you are, gold will always be considered as money, and can therefore be replaced for goods and/or whatnot. Both (bitcoin and gold) has its pros and cons, and I'm pretty sure we have been through this time and time again.

And gold can be tampered with, unlike Bitcoin where the blockchain takes care of that automatically.

For gold, you need to inspect it. Even ingots have been known to be faked, taking out some of the gold inside. You could recreate gold coins, but counterfeiting will thrive, and not everyone has the capacity to detect the fakes. Like the ingots, all it takes is some metal that weights about the same and cover that with actual gold.

The Roman Empire actually started their inflation by literally reducing the amount of gold used in their coins, until there was no gold in them anymore Tongue

See how gold is not so convenient anymore? Can you ever certify the gold reserves are 100% gold? Almost no one is allowed in, you have to trust the word of a select few. Going back to backing fiat with gold is simply lying to yourselves. Besides they also practice fractional reserve, you can bankrupt a central bank.

3180  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why does Warren Buffett hate bitcoin? on: July 17, 2019, 05:43:37 PM
He doesn't need to make more money anyway, and if he does, it won't be a high risk like it is for everybody else. Yes, down-talk Bitcoin, while ready to invest in it a little percent of his disposable fortune just in case...

I bet the rest of his kind are doing the same, even Trump.
