This connection problem is due to a slight change in how the client uses IRC to connect. The problem is worsened by a lot of people joining the network but not opening port 8333 so there are more and more nodes wanting to connect, but not enough letting to connect to.

It will be fixed in the near future

cool! great to know that the problem is known and being fixed.

To properly resolve this problem try enabling "Map port using UPnP" in Settings->Options. If that doesn't work you'll need to manually open/forward port 8333 from your router to your computer

wouldn't I only need to do something like that if could never get any connections?
i mean, sometimes the thing just works fine.

ok, i tried running the client with -addnode option, with an ip of a belgian guy (kinda close),
and it got me connected.

still it seems to be smth wrong with  the p2p network.
i mean, it usually takes much less time to connect to other p2p networks,
like torrents and the like.
324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / 0 connections on: June 03, 2011, 12:57:43 PM
I posted this questions here a while ago, and basically my conclusion was that it
is normal to have 0 connections for about an hour after starting the bitcoin client.

but the situation has got worse since.

now my client can run for hours without getting a single connection.

does anybody else have this problem?
can it be due to some kind of throttling of the network?

i must add that the problem is not permanent-
sometimes it runs normally, gets connectons, downloads the chain and operates perfectly.

The bank in France is acting up (they need to manually confirm any transfer we send after we have sent 3000 euro in one day) so we are looking for alternatives. In the meantime deposits and withdraws IN EUROs are still possible. Withdraws may be delayed by a few days.
Please remember that SEPA transfers are limited to 50000 EUR, sending more will be cheaper if sent to Japan.

why should the transfers be made only in euro? AFAIN, in Europe you can
do SEPA transfers from non-EUR  (e.g. Switzerland or UK) countries to EUR countries, and the conversion  to
EUR (or to the recepients currency in general) will be done automatically by the banks.

Am I missing something?

I was looking to buy anywhere between 10-20 bitcoins.  It looks like there's no one in my area (Athens, GA) right now.  I'd love to be the local Bitcoin trader if I could buy more.  Is it easier to buy them in bulk?

Mtgox currently accepts wire transfers in euro for free. so, you can trade small amounts there.
327  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: options trading on: April 30, 2011, 05:11:25 PM
For businesses, what you need is a third party enabler. Here's how it works.

Merchant's shopping cart displays the total (say $25), together with a bitcoin equivalent valid for one minute (say 7 BTC). If the customer pays 7 BTC, the enabler gets the Bitcoins and pays the merchant $25. No risk for the merchant that way. Most merchants don't want to mess with currency hedging.

This could work great for many.
But this way the merchant is much more exposed than he would be if he just traded in bitcoin and exchanged it once a month or so.

328  Economy / Trading Discussion / options trading on: April 30, 2011, 04:53:44 PM
with BTC rates doing what they do, I guess for any serious business to
start using bitcoin we'd really need option trading.
A business would want to know he'd be able to sell his BTC in say one month
at a known rate.

MtGox says that options are "coming soon", but they are not there.
May be some other exchange wants to fill the niche?

sorry I realized this should have been posted in the "technical support" board, rather than "bitcoin discussion" :/

Could your ISP be traffic shaping?

traffic shaping against bitcoin? not very likely, especially
given that it's very tolerant to torrents..

Need more info.  Are you behind a firewall?  What OS are you using?

not behind a firewall. Ubuntu 10.10

bitcoin 0.3.21, but had it with the previous version too.
333  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / bitcoin client not connecting on: April 28, 2011, 08:11:28 PM
Hi,

the bitcoin client I'm using often can't connect to the network.
It shows "0 connections" for like an hour. THen sometimes it goes to 1 and then back to 0.

Sometimes closing it and starting again solves the problem, sometimes not.
Also, often it just works fine  - finds several connections immediatetly

anybody has a similar problem?

my network connection is pretty good.
