324  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: R9 280X or HD 7970 on: November 09, 2013, 03:07:48 AM
It's the same card as 7970 Ghz edition (working at 1000 instead of 1050Mhz) just with the new shiny name. Cheesy
Some of the R9-280X will have a new chip (Tahiti XTL). Said to draw less power than the Tahiti XT2 (inside 7970 GHz).

Any idea when the new chip would be in R9-280x?
All I've heard so far indicates that it's a lottery to get the XTL or XT2 if you buy a 280X right now. Some posts say only HIS and MSI so far.

[08:37:20] CHINA: yes, new shipment from AMD will be XTL instead of XT2
[08:40:39] GIBBO: what is the exact difference please?
[08:41:34] CHINA -: well, i do not know know exactly what is the difference
[08:43:12] GIBBO: Please try to find out m8
[08:43:23] CHINA -: ok ok
[10:11:03] CHINA -: Mate, just checked. There is no difference on the specification between XT2 and XTL. The only difference maybe that the overclockability of XT2 is better than XTL.
[10:14:27] GIBBO: why is that m8?
[10:14:30] GIBBO: different power design?
[10:14:53] GIBBO: Will XTL feature the new HD sound found on R260X and R290's ?
[10:15:21] CHINA: no, XTL does not support True Audio
[10:15:55] GIBBO: Why do you think it won't clock as well?
[10:16:35] CHINA: well, i got this from my product development people
[10:17:12] CHINA: maybe related to the screening
[10:17:37] GIBBO: so in short current version is better for OC then
[10:17:48] CHINA: you are correct

Seems that current R280X are using the full blown HD 7970 GHz chip and the new XTL version will be a lower cost design which gives the same performance out the box, but won't have the OC headroom of the current chip.

You mean the new one is cheaper and worse off?

326  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is heat all energy from mining? on: November 06, 2013, 01:35:16 AM
Electrical energy goes into my GPU and changes to heat energy.

Is 100% of the energy being changed to heat when mining, or is there a small portion that is still electricity? The data bits I am sending to the BTC network must still be electrical energy, right?

In theory, 100% of the energy is converted to heat but not as efficient as a heater... no matter what the electricity is used for, it will still product heat for that part....

An electric (resistance) heater is also 100% efficient.  Any resistance load is equally efficient.  It can't be more or less.
But not all heaters work by resistance. A heat pump will provide about 3 to 5 times as much heat as the electricity it consumes, and is therefore the obvious choice for anyone who cares about their electricity bill, or who wants to confuse the Hell out of people who think they understand thermodynamics but don't.

Thanks for the explanation, I remember reading somewhere a good heat pump can produce 5 BTU per watt instead of 1 BTU... oh well...

329  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Just purchased 18 block erupters Buyers remorse... on: November 04, 2013, 05:01:18 AM
They are going as low as $9 on Amazon....

So, as I said, if you sell your miners this year, you can write off your loss as capital loss on your taxes.

Is bitcoin even taxable in the first place?
330  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What can happen after mining reached saturation? on: November 04, 2013, 04:58:56 AM
Given that only handful ASIC sellers offering in-hand miners, most of them priced ROI to be infinity. Then it’s likely the network hash rate will reach the plateau at some point in time. It’s an indicator that miners are very reluctant to invest in mining equipment passing that point.

From this point on, the network will have some lengthy period of stability without significant hashing power increase. A government wants to destroy bitcoin, it’s easy enough to calculate the total hashing power needed to overtake 51%, and it can also execute overnight given that it’s highly possible to accumulate enough ASICs to flip on the switches at the same time. Miners won’t get enough time and resource to react.

Is this likely to happen?

Then you might see difficulty stop increasing (might also decrease). Then whoever have free electricity wins....
331  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will a Sep/Oct KNC jupiter ever ROI? on: November 04, 2013, 04:57:53 AM
I've mined with a Jupiter for two weeks now, made 12 BTC. Won 18 BTC gambling in the same period, so I'm almost break even!

Lolz, this has nothing to do with break-even. If you use 18BTC to gamble instead then you have 27 BTC which is more profit then jupiter...!!!
332  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Block Erupter is worth it? on: November 04, 2013, 04:56:17 AM
Hello, I have 62 block erupters for 620 $. Should I start mine with them or sell them? I know, that there are many questions like this, but I will be happy if somebody would respond on mine question.

If it's brand new, then sell it. If you have already used then just use it for mining while waiting selling it Smiley

336  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which operating system(s) do you use? (Poll) on: November 04, 2013, 04:47:56 AM
I'll say it again in this thread. I've Windows 8 for my gaming PC and Ubuntu for my server.

Windows 8 for gaming? How good is that?

The main problem is everyone is having a hard time getting games to work with Linux, they don't support LINUX!!!!
