I guess BFL did software simulations of the ASIC design and founded on these results the design was chosen for production without prototyping. Also the specs are founded on the software simulations I guess.

It's possible that they had prototype chips in a different package, identified all the issues in them and rolled in the fixes with the package change.

I have not read anything about how long it will take to redesign the PCB

With good engineers? A day. Throw in another day to get other engineers to review it. Add a few weeks to get them manufactured in whatever quantity. Since they would have made this design change at least a month ago (most likely more), they would have the PCBs by now.

PCBs are easymode next to ASICs.

Rofl. Have fun.

So, you all saw this right?

Some did, others just thought "lol another delay" without realising that the timeline is actually pretty consistent with their December update. The update also happens to be their most detailed ever (ie. it actually includes a timeline...).
325  Bitcoin / Hardware / [Archive] BFL trolling museum on: January 14, 2013, 06:27:46 AM
How is this BFL update not considered a f'ing troll post?  It reads like they are experiencing delays so that they can exceed customer expectations.

They are just fixing their mistakes.  And yielding to the community regarding their dumb MCU logic for jobs.

There are just so many ridiculous cliches that can be applied to this.  I just want to strangle someone - where's MPOE-PR.

Something is seriously wrong with you if you can't see the difference between trolling and giving the customers the information they want.

Unless you're trolling, and I somehow didn't notice

Good point. No tests have been mentioned. So um...are we back in the timeline of like September of last year?

No tests? wow...yeah that will be a smooth process over the next 30 days.

Functional testing can be done in about a day if they have everything set up; give another day if minor firmware changes are needed (likely). He gave a week for packaging in that timeline, but packaging can go much faster than that. They'll have the first chips in functional testing while the rest are being packaged.

Clicked! Looks long. Getting a fresh cup of coffee. Now only if I knew how to freeze MFC until I get back to them. MeSoSExxY has a new outfit and I wanted to see it live. She only needs $3.68 more donations before she puts in on. My lost I guess. Getting coffee now, then to the reading.

Tldr; chips finished last week of Jan, packaged first week of Feb, soldered into units the week after then shipped ~mid Feb. <1 month to get through all pre orders.

Inaba hasn't said anything about the demise of bASIC yet.

How much of the "update" do you reckon will focus on that?

I'm betting on more than 0%.

It was approximately 0%. There was a small remark about better power consumption but I think that was aimed at Avalon.
329  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bASIC not shipping / change of owership / refunds etc. on: January 14, 2013, 12:56:08 AM
Sure, no problem.

Happy now?

Yes. Note the USD figure. The BTC is in brackets because it's converted at a spot price, and not the official price of the invoice (and certainly wouldn't be legally recognised as the real price).

I have also seen the hashing performance stats on a working pre-prod unit!

Dave, can you tell us exactly what you saw, for the good of the project and those invested in it?

Thanks.

I would also like to know this; I'd guess from IRC comments that it was a PC running mining software with a board connected to it.
331  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bASIC not shipping / change of owership / refunds etc. on: January 14, 2013, 12:47:55 AM
-Product was paid for with BTC.

It's like me complaining that I paid in GBP and got back less GBP because the US dollar got weaker.

-BTC were not converted to fiat and keep in one wallet.

Irrelevant. The payment is USD with live conversion, hence the refund should be USD with live conversion.

With all due respect, Nathan, for I have no qualms with you (seriously), but for discussion purposes only, consider another scenario.

What if Bitcoin 100 ceased to exist for some reason and all funds currently residing in a main wallet needed to be returned? Some of those donations were collected when Bitcoin was barely north of $2.00 USD per. Should I/we calculate the exchange rate for all the donations at the time they were given and return the exact dollar amount in BTC, or should we/I return the exact Bitcoin amount that was donated? If the former, Roger Ver would not be happy but, OTOH, the balance of Zhou Tong's donation would be pocketed. Of course, I would have Dave Rassah do the accounting math.

Bitcoin 100 has no such clause as to how funds would be returned if such a scenario were to play out. One reason for being such is that I don't control the wallet. Rassah and Roger are the only two people capable of moving coins. But the right thing to do would be to return the exact Bitcoin amount, for there's three reputations at stake, surely two, and most definitely at least one.

Taking a quick look at the website, I'm seeing all figures in BTC only (hence accounting should be in BTC); USD or CAD or GBP is irrelevant. If BTC is the primary or sole currency then logically the refunds should be exact BTC values.

To be clear, I not trying to start a shitstorm with you Nate, but would love to continue this friendly discussion if it's warranted.

Agreed, but I doubt we'll ever agree.

If I pay with bitcoins the currency of the TRANSFER is bitcoins!

It couldn't be made more obvious that the currency of the sale is USD. You're opting to transfer an alternate currency at a spot price. The refund is therefore a transfer of an alternate currency at a spot price.

There never was a fixed BTC sale price.
333  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bASIC not shipping / change of owership / refunds etc. on: January 14, 2013, 12:07:43 AM
I'm seeing only USD prices.
I'm seeing BTC price as well. If I didn't see such a price how would I know how much BTC I had to pay YOUR COMPANY?.

Screenshot?

That's the default assumption for any site/sale that only shows prices in USD.
No. If there is a statement that they accept payment in bitcoins and they quote a price in bitcoins! If customers select the bitcoin payment option then they are offered a price in bitcoins. So, in case of a refund they must get back the same amount in bitcon they have originally paid.

I'm seeing only USD prices. Any BTC price is clearly generated based on current market rates.
336  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bASIC not shipping / change of owership / refunds etc. on: January 13, 2013, 10:59:29 PM
This whole argument is kind of moot since people aren't getting refunds at all.

Should have received a refund last week. Requested a refund on Jan 6.

Several members of this forum have reportedly received refunds already.

I only care about the product.
What product do you care about?

The T shirts and coffee mugs, of course.

Protip: Don't ask stupid questions

I reddit'd the video of Josh & My interaction on the CES floor.  and after a bunch of initial upvotes it was clear there was a BFL-supporter run downvoting campaign.

Rofl, I see this a lot. "Oh, I got downvoted...it must be downvoting campaign!" If the downvotes were part of a campaign, then logically the upvotes were too.

The video was downvoted because it's shitty and had the context left out.

That's much less stupid than the video; I might even upvote it.

I can only imagine the pain felt by those with pre-orders to see the man who runs this company act in such a way on the CES floor convention floor

I don't give half a shit how he acts; I only care about the product.

But seriously, stop pretending that you didn't provoke him. I can see what was going through your head...

Quote from: Micon's brain
lol I bet if I go back and annoy him again he'll...get annoyed...on camera, lol! then i can make him look bad!
340  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASIC vendor status on: January 13, 2013, 09:31:25 PM
fact: dont order with them https://www.btcfpga.com/forum/index.php?topic=1041.msg3093#msg3093
another fact:this is what BFL presented at CES, a case.. wow https://i.imgur.com/fcma3.jpg
and last: that manufacturer from china is imho a scam too

There's a fair chance that all three will ship. bASIC mostly suffered a PR disaster after the PR guy was kept in the dark, but if bASIC's assets are real then someone will buy them and start selling chips/boards.

BFL said weeks in advance that their chips wouldn't be ready for CES. This is not news, and has nothing to do with whether they can eventually ship.

Avalon's probably the least likely to be a scam.
