321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open letter to Russell Brand, asking him to join the bitcoin revolution on: October 29, 2013, 05:29:00 PM
Brand is pretty notorious for being hard to work with and a general asshole to most people.  He wouldn't be at the top of my list at people to contact but any support is good support I suppose.  Thanks for getting proactive.
322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I talked to some people at college about bitcoin and they laughed at me. on: October 28, 2013, 05:32:22 PM
Most people don't have a level of intelligence to understand bitcoin.  It is counter-intuitive to non-smart people.

If that's true, Bitcoin is destined to fail.  Luckily I don't believe that.
323  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I talked to some people at college about bitcoin and they laughed at me. on: October 27, 2013, 08:17:55 PM
I use Rainman as the example when trying to explain ASICs.  Maybe it's not politically correct since you're dealing with autism but I find it's what people can relate to.  In the move, Raymond was exceptionally good at counting numbers but he couldn't function very well in every day society.  This is very similar to ASICs, as it's extremely good at doing one particular task but not very good at doing a large variety of tasks (like a personal computer would).  Maybe that's a way you can explain it to your friends, they can't buy a computer off Ebay the same way a normal person wouldn't be able to memorize an entire phone book like Rainman.
324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silkroad Gone: Bitcoin Rising on: October 26, 2013, 05:48:10 PM
Actually the only reason BTC went down after that was emotion.  Silk Road's effect on the price was like a fly on windshield - zero.
BUT I will say that other more organized and nefarious groups, like those often associated in movies with Italian heritage, could be keeping more in BTC than anyone cares to imagine.  But they don't build websites and attract attention of the public. IMHO

That's actually a really good point that I hadn't considered.
325  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silkroad Gone: Bitcoin Rising on: October 25, 2013, 05:28:59 PM
I'm pleasantly surprised with the rally after the shutdown.  It really chops the "Bitcoin is only for drugs" crowd off at the knees.
326  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Bubble Popped on: October 24, 2013, 05:47:37 PM
One thing "high frequency traders" never seem to grasp ... is that they could have 10x the money if they weren't such adrenaline junkies.

Great.  You made a little cash by selling over half your coin stash.

You claim you'll buy when it dips again.

Unfortunately, it will never dip to $60 again ... like it did a few months ago.

Now dips will be higher, and higher, and higher.

And you will continue buying and selling ... and making your minimal $ ...

Meanwhile, the dude who bought at 60 and held till $1,000 is the true winner.

All that coin you made in your high frequency trading will be gone, no doubt spent ... and you'll have nothing to show for it in 5 years.

While the guy who bought at 60 and held is buying a porsche with 1 coin.

Bought my first Porsche when I was 16 because I knew what I was doing.

6 years later I still know what I'm doing.

Bitcoins do not compound. Nor did I make 'little' cash. I see percentages. Numbers are relative.

You don't understand money. Especially how to make more of it.

Does that explain why, looking at your strategy, I've made thousands of % more than you have on bitcoin? Yet you "see percents" and "understand money?" Nice try.

By the way, dick-swinging on the internet means absolutely nothing. Look: "I bought a lamborghini when I was 12..." does that count? Again, nice try Grin Grin Grin

Nah, I know him, he's not lying he really did buy a Porsche.  He just didn't tell you what it looked like.

Do you want contributions on the doc or here?  You were still editing the document when I opened so I wasn't sure.
328  Economy / Economics / Re: Mass Adoption of BTC on: October 23, 2013, 12:24:13 AM
Bitcoin will remain a store of wealth for people and speculators for the foreseeable future. I think it might be used for microtransactions down the track.

Yeah I think microtransactions is a good way to get the masses on board.  This is a social network world now, I think people would be willing to tip bloggers or people they follow on a regular basis.  How do you tip someone a quarter on the internet?  Incredibly difficult and a niche Bitcoin can fulfill.
329  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Where can I safely convert BTC to USD? on: October 21, 2013, 05:44:14 PM
I have a few BTC I would like to 'cash out' into USD. I live in the United States, where and how is the easiest/safest way?

Coinbase or localbitcoins.  If you go with the latter, meet in a public place like a library or Starbucks.
330  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Breaks 2 Petahashes {GPU Mining Dead} on: October 20, 2013, 06:17:32 PM
I could see why GPU miners would be made but didn't the people buying ASIC's take this into account when they bought their ASIC's?

To this degree? Maybe not. I expected a 100x increase from the pre ASIC levels. This is exceeding they with no sign of slowing.

It will slow when there are no longer profits to be made.  The system has and always will be supply and demand based.  Even though the curve looks exponential right now, I assure you, it will not last.  Many people were warning about the lack of profitability in ASIC miners, especially for those deeply buried on the wait list.
331  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I generated an address that already exists on: October 20, 2013, 06:13:37 PM

Open up the debug console (help->debug window->console), type in:

gettransaction 5aed0ce301ecd17b237be9bd0dda7fa8fb7e2eb7f453c2ca1f27de160a23c791

If it returns that old transaction then that key was already in the wallet when that transaction hit your client.

When I do this, I see some transaction info. I didn't restore my wallet.

Still, I don't understand what you mean by saying it's always an old address from the keypool.

When I press "New address" button does it generate a brand new address that no one used before?

Bitcoind always keeps a keypool with 100 (?) addresses which is pregenerates. Every time you request a new address it pulls it from this pool and adds a new one to the pool. The idea is to make backups more effective (but deterministic wallets such as Armory uses are way better for this).

Couldn't I hypothetically create a script that systematically generates bitcoin addresses from the pregenerate pool and have the script lookup the generated address to see if the wallet is active with a balance then choose to spend this into a new wallet address?

You could but it would be a huge waste of time and resources.
332  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The US Govt "seizing" their way to control of BTC on: October 19, 2013, 05:43:20 PM
Let's hope they're stupid enough to liquidate it...

Lets hope people are not stupid enough to setup illegal websites or use their Bitcoins to purchase illegal goods.
333  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitstamp is goxing? on: October 18, 2013, 06:56:11 PM
How are they goxing?
USD withdrawals processed and arrived within 3 business days, can't even get it processed by MtGox after waiting for 3 months.
Bitcoins withdrawals processed almost instantly, can't even get MtGox broadcast it on blockchain after waiting for 5 hours.

Agreed, totally different situations.  They're just complying with AML/KYC/BSA.  If you're doing everything legally you have nothing to worry about.

Looks great so far, keep up the good work!
335  Economy / Economics / Re: IT IS TIME: Move Your Money Out of the US Banking System on: October 18, 2013, 03:40:46 AM
Quote
Within the last 24 hours, I have learned of two major banks that are making it difficult for you to send international wires or draw out large amounts of cash. Both JPMorganChase and HSBC USA have instituted new policies which will make it difficult for you to withdraw your funds in certain ways. This is not good. There are apparently some workarounds relative to these policies, but just try setting up those workarounds when you want to move your money during some kind of panic.

...Bottom line: You are playing with fire if you keep any serious amount of money in a US bank.

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2013/10/it-is-time-move-your-money-out-of-us.html

And what are the alternatives?  Mattress? Doomsday bunker?  It's not like the paper money will be worth anything if the whole banking system crashes down anyway.
336  Economy / Economics / Re: Vote for me in 2020 as US President and I'll proclaim bitcoin national currency on: October 17, 2013, 05:43:58 PM
No thanks, I'd rather vote libertarian.

So based on that statement, you don't care what I represent, you just want to make sure I have the right title?  Something about a book and it's cover come to me here...

No one has any idea what you represent.  No background, no credentials, no platform, nothing but "I'll proclaim Bitcoin the national currency, vote for me!"   Roll Eyes
337  Economy / Economics / Re: JPMorgan Chase goes Cyprus way on: October 17, 2013, 05:39:39 PM
Eh, I honestly don't see the big deal with this one.  It's a SAVINGS account, not a checking account.  If it were a business checking account, that would be huge but it isn't.  And the CFO of the school should be fired for parking that much cash earning 0.1%-0.15%.  The only way that makes sense is if they use Chase's business services and get some sort of offset for that large of a deposit.
338  Economy / Services / Re: 0.4 BTC / month free (Best payouts - NO POSTING NEEDED & Updated :) on: October 16, 2013, 04:56:52 PM
This week I'll receive my second payment (17th). I still love this deal and will surely extend it another month Smiley
Paid up to here!

Payment confirmed, thank you TF!  Requesting another month.
339  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Breaking news: Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) accepts BITCOIN! on: October 15, 2013, 10:36:37 PM

Lazy bastards can't even translate it properly, just copy/paste from Google translate?  Really?  What is "music Bitcoin accelerated payment?"  No wonder I don't read this joke of a website for "news."
340  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Breaking news: Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) accepts BITCOIN! on: October 15, 2013, 05:31:20 PM
Hopefully good news but lets not get ahead of ourselves, that payment address so far has about $23 in it.
