Harunustaspor, a Turkish amateur football team, just bought a player using bitcoin.

The Bitcoin space might be struggling from a price and a sentiment perspective right now but that hasn’t stopped the flow of quirky news that’s become prevalent over the last six months or so, as the cryptocurrency and blockchain spaces have moved out from under the radar and into the mainstream.

The latest report of this type has come out of Turkey, which (as many reading will likely already be aware) has had something of a turbulent relationship with cryptocurrency over the last few months.

The BBC reported today that a Turkish football (soccer, for our North American friends) club has signed a new player using bitcoin.

At the top tier of football in Europe, when a club says they have acquired a new player through purchase or transfer, it normally means that the club in question has paid another club for the player that’s being transferred.

That’s not the case here, however.

We’re talking lower league teams – specifically, the Turkish amateur league – and the transfer and acquisition fee refers to the club having paid the player the funds in an attempt (and, as it seems, a successful one) to get him to join the ranks.

Specifically, the team is called Harunustaspor and the player who has been bought is a 22-year old footballer named Omer Faruk Kıroglu.

A Combination of BTC and Fiat

As per the reports, Kıroglu has picked up 0.0524 BTC (which amounts to a little over $520 at current pricing) and 2,500 Turkish lira (around $665 right now) to join the club, which competes in the Turkish Sakarya First Division Group B.

And the club hasn’t been coy about the justification for the decision to pay BTC for Kıroglu.

Here’s what club chairman, Haldun Sehit, said about the move:

We did it to make a name for ourselves in the country and the world.

And, to give credit where credit is due, it’s working.

The news is being reported across the globe through numerous top-tier outlets and is likely introducing not just this team, but the league in which it plays, to a brand new global audience.

Whether Harunustaspor will pick up any new fans on the back of its dabble with bitcoin remains to be seen.

Bitcoin Interest, the latest spinoff of the first cryptocurrency Bitcoin, aims to lift the interest-bearing benefits of traditional banking and bring them into the cryptocurrency world. Starting with “Bitcoin Cash” last August, Bitcoin has seen around 19 hard forks so far and this year experts predict up to 50 more forks will roll out.

A familiar innovation for the crypto-economy

The main idea behind Bitcoin Interest (BCI) is very similar to that of an interest bearing savings account, with a decentralized approach. If you park your BCI coins for a certain interest period - “weekly or monthly” - the system will proportionally allocate interest payments to its participants.

One of the main advantages of Bitcoin Interest is that there is no set interest rate, and the rate is usually higher than that of a traditional savings account. The interest rate is calculated based on how many coins are generated and placed in the interest pool, and by how many users are participating in the interest round.

Hard forking for a hard problem

While both ICOs and Bitcoin hard forks end up in the creation of a new cryptocurrency, the main difference between Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and hard forks is that the latter initiates an immediate value for Bitcoin holders. Hard forks are essentially improving on the Bitcoin blockchain in order to bring benefits such as security, speed and efficiency for the so called ‘digital gold’. According to experts, the development of hard forks could further ensure the stability and the maintenance of the decentralized platform which has seen unprecedented growth and reach over the last few years.

Another issue with Bitcoin is the skyrocketing transaction fees - from around 20 cents to about $15 - throughout the course of 2017. Along with other obstacles, this inspired an avalanche of hard forks starting with Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Diamond which was followed by many others.

To overcome the shortcomings of Bitcoin, these forks have attempted to change the blockchain one way or another. For instance, Bitcoin Cash increased the block size from 1MB to 8MB making the processing of a larger number of transactions to be possible within the 10-minute period. This resulted in transactions becoming faster, and also made them cheaper.

Investing into the future

Bitcoin Interest stands out among other forks because apart from the usual reward for mining, investors can also earn interest by parking their BCI coins. This interest earning characteristic makes Bitcoin Interest an appealing choice in the booming cryptocurrency market. HitBTC already expressed its support in favor of Bitcoin Interest, and Okex, a world-leading digital asset exchange has also agreed to support the snapshot, however, whether or not they will support deposit, trading and withdrawal remains to be seen as that decision is based on the status of the Blockchain after the fork.

Even though the popularity and use of cryptocurrencies has gone through the ceiling in the last couple of years, trust and volatility have remained a serious issue for most of the blockchain industry. Japan’s finance minister has called on cryptocurrency exchanges to strengthen their cybersecurity posture and standards following the $530 million hack of XEM tokens from Tokyo-based exchange Coincheck.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Japanese finance minister Taro Aso demanded the strengthening of management systems at domestic cryptocurrency exchanges while urging regulators to “appropriately monitor” the ecosystem to protect consumers.

“It was a matter of great regret that illicit access caused a massive cryptocurrency outflow from Coincheck on Friday,” Aso told reporters, as reported by Reuters.

He went on to add:


Aso, who also serves as Japan’s financial services minister, has previously been critical of excessive regulation on cryptocurrencies.

The finance minister’s remarks follow the FSA’s own statement on Monday where the regulator revealed it would investigate all cryptocurrency exchanges including the possibility of on-site inspections. The FSA has also ordered Coincheck to improve its cybersecurity standards.

As reported previously, Coincheck executives admitted to storing funds in its hot wallet, which was ultimately compromised. Hot wallets are susceptible to unauthorized access, unlike cold wallets that are secure and kept offline. “It was hard for us to manage cold wallets,” Coincheck president Koichiro Wada said in a press conference in the aftermath of the hack, pointing to “technical reasons and understaffing.”

Coincheck also stored the 500 million NEM tokens in a hot wallet without multi-sig security, further underlining its failings as a custodian of customers’ cryptocurrencies.

On Monday, Japan’s primary financial diplomat Masatsugu Asakawa revealed cryptocurrency regulation ‘was likely’ to be discussed among G20 nations’ finance ministers and central bankers in Argentina during this year’s meeting in March.

Social media giant Facebook has unveiled a new policy that bans advertisements involving bitcoin and initial coin offerings, among others.

Rob Leathern, the company's product management director, wrote in a Jan. 30 blog post that the new policy targets "ads that promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency."

Leathern went on to write:


Most users of the social media site have likely encountered ads for initial coin offerings, including those pitching sky-high investment returns as well as bonuses for early participation. Other advertisements seen on the platform pitch investment advice around the crypto market.

Such ads, Leathern argued, are being targeted as part of an evolving policy against potentially fraudulent activities on the site.

Leathern added that the policy extends to other platforms under Facebook's purview, including the popular photo-sharing app Instagram. He suggested that the policy could be changed in the future, though he didn't offer any kind of timeline on that front.

"This policy is intentionally broad while we work to better detect deceptive and misleading advertising practices, and enforcement will begin to ramp up across our platforms including Facebook, Audience Network and Instagram," he wrote. "We will revisit this policy and how we enforce it as our signals improve."

The cryptocurrency market has continued to struggle demonstrating gains for two straight days. Today, on January 30, major cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and Ethereum dropped by nearly 5 percent.



Adoption

As CCN reported yesterday, the current price trend of bitcoin and Ethereum do not accurately reflect the performance of both cryptocurrencies in terms of user activity, user base, and adoption. This week, two of Asia’s largest retailers have announced support for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies including Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin.

Most notably, South Korea’s e-commerce platform WeMakePrice has started the integration process of 12 cryptocurrencies listed by Bithumb. Within a few weeks, millions of active users on WeMakePrice will be able to transact using bitcoin and 11 other cryptocurrencies.

Last week, Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz stated that if cryptocurrencies cannot be adopted by retailers and merchants, they will fail to evolve into legitimate currencies. Already, despite the underlying scalability issues of most major cryptocurrencies, some of the largest retailers in Asia have started to integrate bitcoin and Ethereum.

Currently, the Bitcoin network is settling about 250,000 transactions per day while Ethereum is processing more than 1.2 million transactions on a daily basis. The integration of the two cryptocurrencies by major retailers could significantly increase their transaction volumes, given that the merchant adoption for leading cryptocurrencies is still minimal as of current.

The demand for cryptocurrencies is still increasing at a rapid rate, given that Robinhood has already added a million users onto its cryptocurrency exchange waiting list. Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the market, also added 6 million users in the past 6 months, allowing it to become the fastest growing startup in history.

But, the market has also experienced an exponential growth rate over the past few months. In 2017, the price of Ripple increased by 330x, Ethereum by 150x, and bitcoin by 19x. Investors within the cryptocurrency market only expect the price of cryptocurrencies to surge by large margins most of the time while dismissing the importance of corrections.

Short-term corrections allow the market to strengthen because weak hands drop off from the market. Because of the week-long slump the market experienced over the past 7 days, many speculators have left the market and the market has stronger hands. Such a trend is evident in the decrease in the daily trading volume of most cryptocurrencies in the market.

Short-Term Trend

Often, the price of cryptocurrencies tend to increase after a short-term correction or slump. Although this has not been the case throughout January, it is important to consider two major factors for market recovery: tax refunds and South Korea cryptocurrency exchanges.

In February, US citizens and residents receive their tax refunds. This would lead to thousands of dollars in unexpected money that either would go to savings or investment. Given the adoption of cryptocurrencies, it is likely that a large portion of US tax refunds would flow into the cryptocurrency market.

This week, South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges open registration for new investors and traders, which may lead to a spike in volume.
