3204  Other / Meta / Re: Poland Subsection Needed on: June 30, 2013, 01:27:31 PM
I second that. I also wanted to raise this request but I wanted to wait until the Polish thread passes the 200 post mark.
3205  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US BITCOIN REGULATION "FOR" or "AGAINST" on: June 30, 2013, 10:05:13 AM
it moves bitcoin out of this half-way-there state, where its mostly have been used to trade drugs, and make risky investment.
it have  have been for about 2 years now in this state.

You have been here long enough that you should know that the percentage of bitcoins used for drugs is minute.
No one forces you to invest in risky ventures, do you need an expensive nanny to tell you what what to do?
3206  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bad News on: June 30, 2013, 08:52:03 AM
So basically there is ZERO CORRELATION between difficulty and price. Quite at odds with the exclamations to the contrary.

There is. High price encourages people to buy/start their miners. Many of them didn't expect to receive their orders late when the difficulty was already high and they didn't take into consideration that the difficulty increase due to increased demand would be so huge. Even when unprofitable or barely profitable people will mine for some time waiting for a change in price (increase) or difficulty (decrease) that would make their mining more profitable or waiting until someone buys their miner(s).
Difficulty adjusts itself to the price with a considerable time lag, one can see how it occurred in 2011.
3207  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ranks/positions (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) on: June 29, 2013, 05:55:06 PM
Are the contributer prices still up to date or are they from when the price was @ 10$?

The Donator/VIP tag prices are in BTC and they are not pegged to USD.

The prices won't be reduced. They may be increased if the BTC price gets really low. Additional lower-price statuses may be created later. I don't want to manually deal with too many payments, though.

I intend to add new, cheaper donator ranks. I won't decrease the price of the old ranks, though I may rename them (to "Donator+" and "VIP+" or something like that).

I said a long time ago that the prices would remain the same, so I can't change this policy now in any case.

Quote
Are the new ranks' price going to be variable or adjusted every x days or months depending on BTC price?

Maybe. I haven't thought about it much yet. The forum doesn't need donations, so I'm not going to create another donator level soon.
3208  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US BITCOIN REGULATION "FOR" or "AGAINST" on: June 29, 2013, 03:19:17 PM
Just to add a point a clairty.  The US government doesn't HATE liberty reserve or Bitcoin.

What the US government is concerned about is allowing Liberty Reserve or Bitcoin to be a conduit for illicit funds used for things like Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Kiddie Porn.

Another case in point.  The US government will also hold YOU responsible if you allow these type of funds into the system.

The US government doesn't like anything that is beyond its control. One does not have to use medium and use it for conducting illicit transactions.
It is enough if one uses a medium that can facilitate the conducting of illicit transactions, even if none are made.

Financial privacy is already a crime. Transactions over $10k require extra paper shuffling even if they are not used to fund drugs or kiddie porn.

unless we figure out how to legally interface with the fiat banking system, Bitcoin will end up like E-Gold and Liberty Reserve.

Fortunately Bitcoin is somewhat-decenetralized and while it may be killed by red tape in US, it should thrive in countries with less financial regulation once more people are aware of its potential.

If Bitcoin is to adjust to the current legal and financial system what value will it have for the remaining financially-aware people if it's another tool in the hands of unpredictable thugs?

3210  Other / Meta / Re: Group buys subforum on: June 27, 2013, 06:16:16 PM
Well, seeing as most if not all group buys is about mining hardwares....

Yeah, I thought of that too but it's still a bit confusing for someone who's used to see all the buying/selling threads in the Marketplace board or one of its child boards.

edit: also most Computer hardware child board threads are also about mining hardware and they are in a marketplace forum.

I'm sure that you gentlemen can come to an agreement chivalrously and without further conflict, which only results in headaches and potential loss in earnings.

 ?

It was shortly after the Viceroy/buyer started seriously trolling DeathandTaxes/TangibleCryptology's thread that TangibleCryptology received a cease and desist order from the State of Virginia due to a complain letter.

I wouldn't be surprised. I have seen this statist threatening people with reporting them for committing for victimless crimes at least a couple of times.

I'm dancing. Lord someone call social services for those poor children. Viceroy is UNSTABLE. I thought he was 14-17.

Wasn't he 44?
3212  Other / Meta / Group buys subforum on: June 27, 2013, 06:00:59 PM
A new subforum was recently created but shouldn't it be one of the Marketplace child boards?
3213  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: " I use my credit card for the miles" on: June 26, 2013, 08:59:11 PM
In many countries car dealers (and watch dealers) get funny about taking large cash payments, due to money laundering rules, about 15,000 euros in Europe for example.

Also who wants the risk of holding that much cash without insurance? Also the dealer won't want the risk of holding that much cash either.

Yeah, I know about the 15k € limit but that's only for companies, I'd rather buy it from a private person, it will be cheaper I probably won't get scammed buying something that will fall apart after a month (knowing what kind of dealers operate in my country).
And even if someone would want to buy a car from a dealer with cash in excess of 15k €, if the dealer is a nice person it won't be a problem.

Another solution: structuring, works in countries with non-overzealous financial regulation.
3214  Other / Meta / Re: wrong section (mod edit: Trojan dropping attempt) on: June 26, 2013, 07:05:52 PM
I have skimmed through his posts and some of them are pretty long, to me it looks like someone hacked his account (maybe with the same method over PM or some bitcoin-related chat room).
3215  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: " I use my credit card for the miles" on: June 26, 2013, 06:51:04 PM
I certainly wouldn't do big expenditures in cash, plus you cannot use over certain limits anyway (try buying a car with banknotes!).

Why wouldn't you be able to use cash? Unless you are buying a new and/or expensive car it is sometimes more comfortable (less time waiting till it arrives in the bank) + less people know what you do with the money.

I bought my motorcycle with cash without a problem.
3216  Other / Meta / Re: Forbidding useless posts when user has a paid signature on: June 26, 2013, 04:20:49 PM
In fact, why don't they?

Some set this (quality posts) as a requirement, others don't.
3217  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Shipito(mail forwarder) vs bitcointalk user + escrow on: June 26, 2013, 01:34:58 PM
Also what about prices in the countries where that tech originates from? China, Malaysia, Korea , etc. Do they get it even cheaper than USA?

Sometimes there are good deals on alibaba but:

- a lot of them are scams
- sometimes you need to buy in really big quantities to get a good price
- the duties/VAT/etc. make it sometimes more expensive than buying locally
3218  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Metered connection - how much data? on: June 26, 2013, 12:05:50 PM
Not sure about the download (shouldn't be much) but if you accept incoming connections / have ports forwarded if you're connecting through NAT, you may see a lot of upload from your side.
3219  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Perhaps a philosophical question or two about mining on: June 26, 2013, 10:17:47 AM
Mostly for fun, I put together a 13 GH/s mining setup two weeks ago.

I started mining with Ozcoin and mined block 242128. Sadly, being in a pool, I just got a normal share.
https://ozcoin.net/content/block-history-bitcoin

Then I switched to Eclipse and a few hours ago, I mined block 243360. Again, being in a pool, I just got a normal share.
https://eclipsemc.com/block_stats.php

Now, I have some philosophical questions: If I had been solo mining, would I have still mined these two blocks?

If you had managed to solve the blocks while solo mining then you would have mined them but you had no way of knowing you would get so lucky.
Also with 13 GH/s you will get a very high variance, I think it's not worth it with such a slow speed nowadays. With the increasing difficulty you might as well never solve a block.

Did choosing to mine in a pool cost me $5K?

One could say so but the chance that you will again mine 2 blocks in the same span of time with current difficulty with current hardware is very low (you can say you got very lucky (or unlucky depending on the way you look at it)).

Could someone who understands the nature of luck please help me with these confounding questions?

You just got very lucky here but in the long term the profits will even out (the greater the time span the higher the probability that you will mine the amount of BTC that corresponds to your hashing speed and mining difficulty).

Am I clearly a lucky miner and should begin solo mining immediately? Should I buy a lottery ticket? Or did I use up my luck and need to stay in pools forever? Should I look both ways twice before crossing streets?

No for all of these questions, solving one block doesn't affect the probability of solving another block because these are independent events.
3220  Other / Meta / Re: Signature Advertising is Getting Out Of Hand on: June 26, 2013, 09:19:42 AM
People should be allowed to put what they want in the signatures as long as they're following forum rules.
That's exactly the point: making ugly ads in signatures forbidden

Define 'ugly' Wink

I personally believe people should be able to put pretty much anything in their sigs and they should also be able to chose from their profile settings what kind of signatures and what size of signatures they want to see (all customizable, now it is only possible to turn them off completely) but that also means extra work for Theymos to make it work.
