3201  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mark Yusko: Bitcoin can go up to $ 30,000 without correction on: July 15, 2019, 09:44:12 PM
We are facing some correction right now  Grin
So this guy missed this one

unless you not consider this moment as a correction

I think its correcting the mistake of going up too quick in too short amount of time. But of course, someone can bring any other argument. Its the beauty of free markets and decentralized currencies: fluctuation, it means its free from government or institutional tyranny, another aspect that brings value.
3202  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much do you think the President’s recent comments have hurt bitcoin prices? on: July 15, 2019, 09:31:28 PM
I think President Trump's comments have brought Bitcoin into the minds of a much larger audience. Since he is the most popular Tweeter in the world whatever he Tweets reaches a whole lot of people. He only tweeted a few things too yet it is significant. At the same time, he takes a very old school slant on all of this new technology. Before we even know it, everything we ever knew will be tied to this new technology. This technology is way bigger than Trump. He should adapt a better stance about Bitcoin, for the people of the United States and for everyone and everything all around the world.

In that case it would create a Streisand effect, perhaps he is a secret supporter and that was his plan all along (or he wanted to buy some bitcoin cheap).
3203  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: M3X Hashboard Problem on: July 15, 2019, 09:24:57 PM
Thank you for the help

Miner restarted automatically and all hashboards started working. It's a connect loose but I don't know how to deal with it!

Sounds like the infamous data bridge issue philipma1957 recently experienced and had so much fun diagnosing. Assuming the M3s and the M10s share that.

    • Power Specs - 200V-240V  ** MicroBT English site rates up to 300V. I will seek clarification.

If this is true you could feed it with 277v... But it looks like a mistake. Or, is anyone willing to test in the name of science? Smiley
    3205  Other / Off-topic / Re: Free WiFi and Security Risks on: July 15, 2019, 06:25:16 PM
I have been reading about the security experts recommending not to charge phones at USB stations: https://kfor.com/2019/07/02/security-experts-warn-against-wifi-cell-phone-charging-stations/

Not only that, stations providing free WiFi will be tracking users at every stop. It shows how much insecure we are. I have started accumulating some resources about WiFi security to make a complete list here: https://infosec.hatenablog.com/

Any additional resources will be appreciated. Thanks  Smiley

Unless you know how to use Tor and make your apps go thru it. Ie. Orbot and Waterfox/Telegram configured to use it... There is more to that of course, but every little step helps.
3206  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: My first farm on: July 15, 2019, 04:54:40 PM
Filters always slowdown the air, so you need to compensate with a higher aperture. Or you could try to filter less, as in less dense material. You could try those plastic like fabrics that can simply be washed and put back again.

Of course no filter means the miners get dusty, and you will have to stop them to clean them from time to time. If your place isn't so dusty in the first place, it might make sense to do without filters. Every location is different.
    3207  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S15 - lost IP adress fault/firmware rewrite ? on: July 15, 2019, 04:45:57 PM
I'd plug it directly to a computer and do full network scan (as in all 32 bits). But before that you could try plugin it to a dhcp router and see the logs to see if if got an ip assigned.

If possible do it with the controller alone, none of the hashboards. But i'm not sure how easy it is to do that with the S15.
3208  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much do you think the President’s recent comments have hurt bitcoin prices? on: July 15, 2019, 04:40:05 PM
Donald Trump: I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin is currently hovering just over $10000.

Heh, well I'm not a fan of Trump either Wink

You know what, this is actually good. Can you imagine what would have happened if Trump said he loved Bitcoin? He is old and rich, old and rich people tend to think alike. Don't look at the past, look at the future. Look at Elon Musk not Buffet or Trump...
3209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you be mad if satoshi sold all coins they own right now? on: July 15, 2019, 04:33:57 PM
    I hope they do.  Cool

No. This wouldn't be a problem, as the market would quickly grab them. Besides if Satoshi wants to change it for fiat, i'd say let him/her.

If you think this would harm Bitcoin, you are very wrong. Cheap bitcoins? Others would grab them. It doesn't matter who sells them, don't fear the whales, if you have fiat lying around a lower bitcoin price would be your chance.

But its all wishful thinking, you never know when this will (if ever) happen, Satoshi or any other whale, can sell at anytime; don't fear the inevitable, embrace it, understand it, then profit!.

Why? Have you never done serial? You just need 3 wires: TXD RXD and GND which corresponds to pins 2, 3 and 5 in a standard db-9 plug. You might need to swap TXD and RXD if you got it wrong. Don't ask me about usb because that's a whole new can of worms.

To clarify in case you somehow got it wrong: You can use either port, the rj45 or the 3 pin header for serial communications. "Both" should work... Using an rj45 for serial communications is old. The port knows when you plug this type of cable instead of Ethernet in devices with serial, there is nothing special about this. But in addition there happens to be a 3 pin header that appears to be the same. Just ignore the 3 pin header if you don't get it.

    RJ-45 PinSignalDB-9 PinSignal

    2DTR6DSR
    3TXD2RXD

    8CTS7RTS

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/junos/topics/reference/specifications/port-rj45-db9-adapter-pinout.html

You could wire them all if you are bothered with hardware control, but my made by Cisco version cable didn't bother. I don't think they use it (cts/rts) anyway, or the data ready pins.
3211  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Buysolar and I will getting the A1041 to review and demo. on: July 12, 2019, 02:40:47 AM
Ring idea makes a loop and crashes the net completely.

This has happened to me when I do a lot of eth switch work and make a mistake causing a loop on a switch.

So for now the loop idea is out.

I want 10 of these as soon as I can get the ten.

If I get that many I will do extensive tests of eth cables.

    Chain of all cat 5
    Chain of all cat 5e
    Chain of all cat 6
    Chain of all cat 7

I will measure hashrate on all 10 units with each set of ten cables

As we all know most of the time cat 5 or cat 5e are fine.

1gpbs ethernet mandates the use of 5e. Testing 5 is pointless at this point in time, no one should be buying those anymore. If the miner only does 100mbps 5 vs 5e the 5e will let less errors in (translates in slightly faster speeds). Similar to...

Using cat 6 for 1gbps. Its not really needed, but its better. For 10gbps it can work in short lengths only (50m vs 100m). 10gbps should be done by cat 6a or cat 7. I don't think you are going to find any miners with 10gbps lan ports, but it might be available for cascading switches and such.

And since you enjoy the fun, there are also cat 8 patch cords...

    In short:

    cat5 100mhz
    cat6 250mhz
    cat6a 500mhz
    cat7 1000mhz
    cat8 2000mhz

If you ask me, 5e or 6 at most is what any mining operation (and most LANs) would ever need.

I did not want to confuse you, but you can actually use anything from 1 bit to 32, not necessarily just 8, 16 or 24. You could use, 12, or 20 bits. Just remember there is always a network address and a broadcast address, any remaining IPs in the middle are the IPs you can use.

Use this calculator and see the endless possibilities. Private nets are up to 24 bit (10.0.0.0/8)

Most switches are layer2, they don't care about this except the very smart ones that can to layer3, and those, of course, can do the whole 32 bits. Limiting yourself to 8 bits is nonsense. Maybe that was more critical when people used 10mbps hubs instead of switches, but that's long gone in the past. Unless you have real cheapo gear... (TP-Link? Smiley)

Computer with pfsense is good too! There are also many embedded devices with multiple ports, such as pc engines you can install any decent os yourself for routing, firewall, etc.
3212  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: thoughts on switching to ASIC mining on: July 12, 2019, 01:05:55 AM
Hi everyone - I am thinking of shutting down a sizable GPU farm and switching everything over to ASIC.  Only issue is, while power is free, it can only be 120V wiring, no way to change that.  Breakers are 20 amps, with a couple 15 amps.

So I think any S9 will be ideal?  Whereas the more recent ones can only be 220 volts due to power supply being integrated with the unit.

Other unit I am considering is Z11, because judging from specs, I think it will do ok 120 volt 15 amps (and certainly on 20 amp breaker).

I was ready to start buying used S9s from Alibaba, but now that I see the new ones are only $350 with PSU direct from Bitmain, I guess it's better to just keep running things as they are until the next Bitmain order?

Also I am hesitant about Zcash (Z11), as not only is difficulty there going up rapidly, but price is also going down against BTC.  With BTC current activity, I am pretty sure we'll be seeing new highs by end of year.  I want to be aligned with that by having all machines that generate BTC directly, ideally.  Best I can do now is point machines at NiceHash instead of mining alts directly.

Thank you anyone for any thoughts, buying advice, etc.  I guess the downside with ASICs is still the same two years later - one has to plan on replacing all machines at LEAST once a year to stay relevant?  And ideally every 6 months, or every 3 months, and sell the old gear ASAP.  So, maybe not worth it at all if I don't want to be constantly trading up like that.

Also I don't know if anything has changed with Bitmain buying recently?  I saw they now require ID upload - says passport but I used driver's license, I assume that works.  I know one has to be "ready" to buy when the window for ordering opens up!

If you are serious about going with asics, you have to switch that voltage. With 120v you are going to face many issues and spend a lot of more money.
An asic miner that would normally take like 8a on 240v would  pulling above 16a on 12v, beyond the 80% safety marging (your 20a circuits won't do).

And you are going to spend a fortune in PSUs, and risk additional problems if you use dual psus or such per miner.

Only solution i could see for this if you are stubborn with voltage, is don't use full miners. Perhaps just use one or two boards per S9, and with BraiinsOS make it run as efficient low power as possible, to consume the least amount of power per hash which might be accommodated with a single psu per unit. And they would also be more quiet, but of course take more space (you'd need more cases).

Yes, at some point ago they implemented KYC procedures.

You probably won't ROI them that quick unless the price suddenly spikes, maybe plan for 1 year or more to be on the safe side. Also the asic manufacturers are a bit slow too, it also depends on market demand and bitcoin price. GPUs are more flexible there.
    3213  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: M3X Hashboard Problem on: July 12, 2019, 12:48:50 AM
Good, also try using it alone, without the other boards, and see if it makes any difference. You can try swapping positions maybe it works best in one of them.

Or, the fact that you are manipulating the data and power connection points is making the difference (ie, making better contact). Again, be extra careful.
3214  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: preparing to order miners on: July 12, 2019, 12:43:25 AM
Sounds like all you need is a 3 phase pdu for 230v. Make sure you don't exceed 80%, in this case 80a total consumption.

I have never seen a British 3 phase outlet, but i imagine they sell pdus for those over there.
3215  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: My first farm on: July 12, 2019, 12:23:40 AM
So start calculating the amount of air you need to be moving, if you want to use 250cfm per S9 as suggested that would be 7250cfm min, but you also mentioned S17s and i don't really know about those, maybe those need 500CFM each?

So to move that air you need some powerful fans, and they can take part of your energy, so leave that margin. Of course you need enough holes or ventilation to be able to move that mass of air, in and out of the place.

Whatever your electric capacity is, don't go above 80%.

Oh and by the way, those 4 fans you mention, are equivalent to 9888 cfm, those should do in theory, not accounting for the S17s. You can use this online calculator.

Actually wherever your air intake is, you CAN use filters, and replace/wash them periodically (buy twice as many). You can go from finding your favorite fabric to the actual filters used in large central air conditioners. The filters slowdown air intake so you might need even larger aperture. It is nice if you can get a measuring tool for cfm, to verify the fans are actually moving the correct amount.

But of course, you can also find out the hard way, by looking at them overheat etc.

If you don't filter the air you'll have to schedule shutdown for maintenance cleaning. All that air moving pulls lots of dust, its like giant vacuum cleaner, you'll see... (and at the other side you'll have a giant air dryer, quite useful too).
    3216  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: M3X Hashboard Problem on: July 11, 2019, 11:50:38 PM
Also try swapping board positions. Be careful when handling MicroBT devices, as they can be quite delicate. I don't know if the M3x also uses the (data) "connection bridge" as the M10...
3217  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Creating more bitcoin on: July 11, 2019, 11:10:22 PM
    I mean, 21 million isn't much.  Smiley

That there are just 21 million units is a common misconception, which we should get rid of.

We can start saying that there are 21000 million mBTC (or mBTC), which is true.

Actually mBTC would be a much more useful unit. As mBTC is currently only about 11$. It would be much easier for new investors to start investing by buying a "WHOLE" mBTC and not worrying if they do not have 11000$ to invest in one full BTC

But yeah. the developers could fork bitcoin and create a new one that has more coins. they probably couldn't change that from bitcoin without everyone agreeing with them.

mBTC is useless, you might as well use satoshis... The exact amount isn't exactly 21 million plus 8 zeroes, there are some satoshis off due to historical reasons, but not many.

Besides 21 million BTC will be reached by the year 2140.

I only use bitcoin and satoshi, don't need anything else. 1 bitcoin is 100 000 000 satoshis, and that's it. One coin from my country buys one satoshi now; and due to it being the worst hyperinflation currently in the world, soon you will need two coins for 1 satoshi, and so on.

3219  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price falls why?? on: July 11, 2019, 03:32:31 PM
Bitcoin price falls nearly -11.76% in a matter of hours

What do you think, will it recover?
I'd even say that it's great that the price went down! It's a lot better strategically if Bitcoin goes up and then a small correction follows before it takes another step forward. At least, this way Bitcoin is able to move forward in a slow and safe way. If the price does not go down from time to time, there's a great chance it will drop down so much after a fast rise, that we are going to see another bearing year. IMO 10-20% fluctuations with Bitcoin are just something we should get used to. Not to mention how convenient and beneficial they can be for traders.

Correct, otherwise the pressure will build stronger and bounce the other way harder. But of course, some traders will make a fortune Smiley

    The slower the better.
3220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What gives tether the right to buy our bitcoin?!? on: July 11, 2019, 03:23:20 PM
I hate tether. I’m for stablecoin but something feels so off here.
What gives Bitfinex the right to keep printing 100million tether?
Is it done simply because someone feels like it? Or is there a reason they keep printing 100million? Or is it simply to buy Bitcoin?
If you are a bitcoin maximalist, you have to see that tether is Bitcoins biggest threat.

Ever heard of inflation? What do you think would happen if they "keep printing" Tether to buy bitcoin?

Logically, the price (in Tether) for bitcoin will skyrocket. Good luck keeping that usd reserve in check, especially when the next bitcoin fluctuation (down) comes.

If you think bitcoin is threatened somehow by Tether, i think you are wrong. We can laugh at this, Bitfinex is just one more actor in the market, and i don't think it is even among the largest whales, no matter how mighty an exchange is.

Oh and if they do this "printing" unchecked, it will seriously press its price against the USD down, their reserves will empty in no time. I know, because countries have made this mistake in history countless times, with the same results, always. I'm currently living in one...

Your comment actually made me even more scared of Tether. Yet more pressure against it, which will make them burn more reserves, which will...
It won't end well, and they have already a past mistake not well atoned for.

Yet another reason why these so called "stable coins" aren't as stable as some people believe. In depends a lot in their monetary policy, pretty much like an old fashioned central bank. Will they act like the West Germany of the 60ies? or today's Venezuela? Something between? Just because its a private entity doesn't make them any less or more free of making the same mistakes.

"Printing" is bad, induced inflation is the very reason bitcoin came to put an end to that practice. Talk about a backwards mindset...
