China is trying to put a back door on everything that is linked to the internet.

The Chinese people are amazing but... The Chinese politburo is a cancer who wants to take over the internet. Everybody can see that, unless you are paid not to see it.

Use open source. You have nothing to worry.
They can examine the Bitcoin protocol source code to their heart's content.  Smiley

What about the source code running on all those IBM computers. Can you examine theirs too? Can the people of china, not the politburo, see what their government do with IBM?

Open source? Check out Ubuntu kylin, especially developed to be "compatible" with the chinese politburo...

Conservatives and liberals are all the same anymore.

I am confused by "same" followed by "anymore". They used to be the same, but not anymore?

I thought the troops were supposed to pull out? American bases are like an infection that won't go away  Cheesy
Though the same.
Anyway I think that the we have to blame the one who ordered to send the troops there. Surely they could find a better strategy but they chose the easiest one and repeated the same fault in Iraq and of course the consequences will appear later with his successor.
The number of soldiers killed or injured is under estimated you need to count the psychic sequel +++ which cause a heavy health problems and for some social problems (killing others for example).
War is the stupid solution for the world problems.

We should blame bush for all the dead under the nobel peace prize winner? 0bama is the commander in chief of all armies. But not really, according to your logic.
Is 0bama to be blamed to this:

3225  Other / Politics & Society / 3 out of 4 U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan Occurred Under Obama on: October 16, 2015, 11:40:42 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An estimated 75 percent of the all U.S. military deaths and about 90 percent of the injuries linked to the ongoing war in Afghanistan have occurred under President Obama’s watch, according to a Breitbart News tally.

President Obama, citing a “fragile” security situation at risk of deteriorating, announced today that he will be extending the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan for an undetermined amount of time, handing over the conflict to his successor.

In making the announcement, the President appeared clueless as to how many Americans were killed in Afghanistan in 2014 and this year.

“Afghanistan remains dangerous; 25 brave Americans have given their lives there this year… Now, the 25 military and civilians who were killed last year, that always weighs on my mind,” said Obama from the Roosevelt Room.

According to Obama’s own Department of Defense (DOD) however, 14 U.S. service members and one DOD civilian have been killed so far this year.

A Pentagon tally shows that in 2014, at least 55 American troops lost their lives in Afghanistan.

President Obama provided an estimate of the American fatalities in recognizing the sacrifice made by U.S. troops in Afghanistan, but he made no mention of how many were wounded in action.

“They served there with extraordinary skill and valor, and it’s worth remembering especially the more than 2,200 American patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan,” said Obama from the Roosevelt Room.

Since the president was inaugurated for his first term on January 20, 2009, at least 1,672 U.S. soldiers, Marines, and sailors have lost their lives, and another estimated 17,425 have been wounded in action while supporting the Afghanistan war effort.

Overall, at least 2,230 U.S. service members have been killed and another 20,127 injured in the ongoing conflict, which started on October 7, 2001.

That means about three out of every four U.S. military deaths (75 percent) and an estimated 9 out of every 10 injuries (87 percent) in Afghanistan have taken place since Obama became president.

Breitbart News’ count is gleaned from Department of Defense (DOD) casualty reports, a now-retired database compiled by The Associated Press (AP), a detailed CNN count, and various news articles.

The Pentagon’s “Afghanistan only” total death tally of 2,229, which includes fatalities under the old Operation Enduring Freedom (2,215) and the new Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (14), is one less than Breitbart News’ count.

The majority of American fatalities throughout the war have been combat-related.

Most clashes between the U.S.-led coalition and insurgents have been concentrated in areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. More than half of all American casualties have taken place in and around Afghan provinces that lie along the Af-Pak international boundary.

The U.S. and Afghanistan have accused Pakistan of providing sanctuary to terrorists fighting American forces in Afghanistan.

President Obama escalated America’s military presence in Afghanistan soon after taking office in 2009, eventually bringing the number of U.S. troops to its peak of about 100,000 in 2012.

However, he is also responsible for withdrawing most American troops by the end of 2014.

President Obama ended the U.S. combat mission in December of 2014, one of the deadliest years of the war for Afghan civilian and security forces.

In January, American troops embarked on their new train and assist mission, placing the Afghan security troops in the lead of security operations.

Afghanistan has experienced a Taliban resurgence since President Obama ended the combat mission. Military officials have also warned against the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) in Afghanistan. ISIS, which is reportedly making major military gains in a turf battle against the Taliban, is operating in about 75 percent of all 34 Afghan provinces, according to the United Nations.

A top Russian military official recently estimated that there are about 40,000 Taliban terrorists and up to 3,000 ISIS jihadists in Afghanistan.

Today, President Obama revealed that he will be handing the Afghanistan conflict to his successor.

He said the U.S. will maintain 5,500 troops in Afghanistan beyond 2016. He did not specify how long they will remain there.

Gen. John Campbell, the top commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, recommended that America leave behind more than the 1,000 troops that the president had promised would remain in Afghanistan after 2016.

Obama has vowed to end the U.S. war in Afghanistan and withdraw most American troops by the time he officially leaves the White House in January 2017.

You shall not forget the witness (better have 2) and the lawyer to keep up with all those "Yes" and write a legal document where everything will be reported. I guess a video could help too, and you shall keep it at least 50 years after the session.

I'm not sure I've understood everything, though. If I'm raping a woman with the whole thing lasting only 9 and a half minutes, that'll be legal, right?

CNN FAIL: EFFORT TO RAISE MONEY FOR ‘CLOCK BOY’ AHMED FALLS FLAT

CNN failed in their recent effort to promote an online fundraiser for ‘Clock Boy’ Ahmed Mohamed. A donation drive fell far short of its $100,000 stated goal despite the news organization helping to bring worldwide attention to it.

On September 16 LaunchGood, an online “crowdfunding” site for Muslims worldwide, kicked off #IStandWithAhmed, a campaign to raise a $100,000 STEM scholarship, according to CNN Money.

The September 17 article explained how people rallied to support Ahmed “not just on social media but also with their wallets.” LaunchGood’s drive began the day before and hoped to raise $100,000 by an October 13 deadline. CNN pitched the cause du Ahmed with verve, telling the tale of “public outcry on social media and nationwide support” for the teen that included notables like President Obama and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The effort came out of the gate strong, raising $10,000 from more than 200 backers in one day, noted CNN Money.

LaunchGood founder Chris Abdur-Rahman Blauvelt told CNN that the Mohamed family approved of the campaign. He said half the money donated would go toward a scholarship fund for Ahmed and the rest to efforts that foster creativity and inventiveness in kids. LaunchGood credits the project to Kyle Smith, a Dallas business co-owner who identifies as a Christian and places a “huge value on Inter-Faith relationships and action.” LaunchGood posted: “Covered on CNN, spread the word!” in one of numerous promotional tweets.

The donation drive fizzled, though, ending Tuesday with LaunchGood meeting only $20,045 of that $100,000 stated goal. However, the LaunchGood #IStandWithAhmed page proclaimed success, which is easy because the intended goal now reflects a much more modest $20,000. According to their newly embedded image, they exceeded their goal by $45.

That part sounds a lot like what's been happening here in the U.S. over the past few years.

Funny thing is you would know it because, here in the US, you can google it... Don't you see the irony compared to china, where you can't google it?

Think about it for a sec, then type Tienanmen Square in your reply. If you can do this without any problem, you do not live in china.

The best way to prevent false rape claims is to avoid those silly drunk girls at the club.

A woman can call rape, even not drunk, even not at a club, months after sex. She can lie about it.

‘Ahmed the Clock Boy’ Meets with Genocidal Muslim Leader and War Criminal

The Janjaweed militia which President Al-Bashir recruited and armed was responsible for the deaths of 400,000 Africans from the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa ethnic groups.

Over 2,500,000 Africans were displaced in the process.

The al-Bashir regime blamed the Jews for the unrest and genocide in Darfur.

Last week Muslim student “Ahmed the Clock Boy” met with the genocidal leader.

Ahmed the Clock Boy is set to meet President Obama at the White House, but he recently met another president. Omar Hassan al-Bashir, the president of Sudan is accused of genocide.

The Washington Post reports:

The American boy arrested for making a clock meets Sudan’s president, an accused war criminal

The arrest of Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old Texas student, in mid-September for bringing a homemade clock to his high school created a nationwide debate about racism and Islamophobia in the United States. Despite facing a wave of ugly criticism, Ahmed won support from high places — President Obama tweeted his support, and the teenager is expected to be a guest at the White House this weekend.

Ahead of that that visit, Ahmed has met with another president. This meeting is a little bit more surprising.

According to the Sudan Tribune, Ahmed met with Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in Khartoum on Wednesday evening. The Paris-based Web site reports that the teenager told reporters that he was “extremely delighted” to meet Bashir and hoped to return to visit the Sudanese president again “with a new invention and success.”…

However, Bashir is no ordinary world leader. He has an outstanding arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, for example, for allegedly orchestrating genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur. The country he leads is under a variety of U.S. sanctions. His government harbored Osama bin Laden for five years in the 1990s. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks even suggested he may have secretly stolen $9 billion in oil money.

Will they ask Ahmed about his trip to Sudan at the White House?

I know what you are trying to say but "counter-culture" is being used incorrectly. A true "counter-culture" is defined as being a movement in resistance to technocracy. It started with the romantics moved through the bohemians and continued through right up to the hippie movement, they were all about rejecting technology and embracing nature.

What you mean to say is conservatism is the new radicalism.
It isn't
Anarchism is and violent revolution will be its outcome

Conservatism is too puritanical anyways

The title is from the video. But I got what he was saying, and i get what you are saying. Personally I am against violence but believe in self defense.

3238  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Astronomers may have found alien megastructures orbiting star near the Milky Way on: October 16, 2015, 08:04:06 PM
How can anyone have a real idea of what an alien would build or what it would look like? A simple look around this planet tells us architecture can be hard to second-guess.
well in terms of the supposed dyson sphere, theres really only 1 efficient and sensible way to go about it; youre pretty much housing a star to utilize its resources, and theres only so many engineering approaches that make sense in implementing something like that. example, youre not going to build  a triangular prism around a star, it only makes sense that a spherical-shaped structure would be used.

just judging from 1 article: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/forget-water-on-mars-astronomers-may-have-just-found-giant-alien-megastructures-orbiting-a-star-near-a6693886.html

it seems the discovery is based off of unnatural, ie man/alien made patterns.

it is actually one of the less probale hypothesis why the light intensity of KIC 8462852 has extreme dips which are not periodic.
to be precise it is about a 15-22% fluctuation, which is very unusual. a planet with the size of saturn would for example weaken the light of the sun by 1%.

as i understand right now things point to collapsed comets which produced dust and gas which weakens/weakened the sunlight instead of alien megastructures.

Comets cannot produce 15-22% fluctuation unless it is one million comets.
One or several gas clouds could cause such a fluctuation, but they would have to be orbiting the star.

It isn't impossible.

Such a thing would be gravitationally unstable.

I'm not sure we have a way to know if the phenomena in question is "long or short lived."  If it is long lived, then energy is being put into the system to cause it to stand against gravity.  If it is short lived, then it will stop the 22-15% variations of it's own accord, after some thousands or millions of years.

"Long lived," with energy inputs, would basically mean artificial.  Next question is whether the doppler shifts have been measured.  That will tell the orbits of the orbiting masses.

Kepler was killed by shy aliens...
