Accessing these sites after they were taken down is not illegal, but it is probable cause to get a warrant to seize your computer and arrest you for any illegal material you might have already saved to your hard drive, assuming you were dumb enough to not use encryption.

I think the mean IQ of bitcoin.org posters is about the same as the rest of the population, but the standard deviation is much higher.

I actually have the v0.8.2-beta but i'm trying to understand this bytes thing, it's quite complicated >.<
So basically the more transactions i have in my wallet, the higher their size is and the higher the dust/transaction fee is?
When you send bitcoins, the transaction includes a reference to the transaction(s) in which you received the bitcoins to be sent. This is how the Bitcoin network verifies that you actually own the bitcoins in question. In other words, if you received BTC2, then another BTC3, and then BTC1, in three separate transactions, and you want to send BTC4, your new transaction will include a reference to two of your previous transactions. The more previous transactions are needed, the more data (in bytes) is needed to encode your transaction, and you are charged a fee based on the amount of data required. In practice, this means if you received a very large number of low-value transactions, and you want to send a high-value transaction, that transaction will require a large amount of data and will require a larger than normal fee, which may come as a surprise. The situation is roughly analogous to receiving a large number of pennies, then being charged a coin-handling fee when you take your sack of pennies to the bank.

Additionally, transactions sending less than BTC0.01 are considered "dust" and always require an additional fee, to discourage people from spamming the network with a large number of low-value transactions. You will not be able to spend any of your BTC0.002 without a fee; BTC0.0019 is the absolute maximum you will be able to spend (with a fee of BTC0.0001), though depending on the amount of data required for your transaction, an even higher fee may be required, and you will be able to spend correspondingly less.

Bitcoin is not designed for microtransactions. Bitcoin transactions are cheap, but not free under normal circumstances (and "dust" transactions are never free). If you have heard otherwise, you have been misinformed.
3286  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does bitcoin have an expiry date? What do you think? on: August 06, 2013, 03:22:35 AM
I know (now) that transaction fees have always been applies. What I am suggesting and defending is that those fees should increase tho a percentage of the transaction.
Transaction fees are set by the miners. If miners want to charge a percentage fee instead of the flat fees they charge now, they're free to do so, though there's no reason for it: transaction fees are meant to cover the cost of mining, and each transaction costs the same amount to mine regardless of value. It simply doesn't make any sense to charge a lower fee for low-value transactions when they still cost just as much to mine. In fact, at the moment, high-value transactions may be sent for free if certain conditions are met, on the theory that a large number of low-value transactions are harder to deal with than a small number of high-value transactions, so we should try to encourage people to do the latter whenever practical. It is very likely that low-value transactions will always be more expensive (relatively speaking) than high-value transactions (Bitcoin was never meant for microtransactions).
3287  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does bitcoin have an expiry date? What do you think? on: August 05, 2013, 04:08:31 AM
To all the time travelling replies, I actually thought that the idea could be implemented, I thought fixes could be made to the network in case bugs were found, and I thought my suggestion, if it could be implemented, was actually a good idea.
The joke is that this idea is already implemented, and always has been. That's how time travel works. A basic principle of time travel is that once an event in the past is changed, everything in the present will change as result, in the same way that events in the present change the future. Included in these changes is everyone's memories of events: people no longer remember the "original" history of event, because as far as their timeline is concerned, it never happened. Nobody here remembers a time when transaction fees weren't a normal and expected part of the mining incentive. The only record we have of the original history is your forum post, which survived because telecommunications devices behave, well, differently when it comes to time travel, for reasons which are still unclear. That's why Professor Reg could never get his telephone to work.

3289  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: wondering why my activity is stuck at 14 on: August 03, 2013, 04:06:36 AM
Your Activity is whichever is the lowest of:
* Your post count; and
* The number of two-week periods in which you've made at least one post, times 14.
Since you've only been active during a single two-week period, your Activity is limited to 14, no matter how many posts you've made.

The result of this system is that your Activity will not increase if you average more than one post per day, or if you go for two weeks or more without posting. The purpose is to discourage spam (you can no longer gain ranks just by making a huge number of posts), and to prevent totally inactive accounts from gaining ranks as they age.

I'm skeptical about the truth of this article considering that nobody knows who these law enforcement people are, and that her husband, "ever the oppositional kind", made no attempt the validate them, and he even allowed them to search his home.
You were right to be sceptical. It turns out the man did his search for "pressure cooker bombs" from his work computer, shortly after being fired, and his boss, who was no doubt shitting himself at the prospect of a disgruntled ex-employee blowing up the office, did the only sensible thing and called the cops on him.

Deposit to whom? This forum is about Bitcoin in general, and is read by many Bitcoin users, developers, and service providers around the world. If you have a question about a specific Bitcoin business, it would be helpful to specify which of the many Bitcoin businesses you are having an issue with. If you are referring to Spend Bitcoins, they used to accept deposits at Commbank, but they don't any more. I don't remember why.

3295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: There are only 21 THOUSAND bitcoins on: August 01, 2013, 01:41:09 AM
The significance of the 21 is what I wonder about.
Simple. Satoshi, like all humans before they ascend to demigodhood, liked round numbers. That's why he chose 10 minutes as the average block time (instead of, say, 9 and a half minutes). Starting from there, we get 6 blocks per hour, 144 blocks per day, 52,560 blocks per year, and 210,384 blocks every four years. Satoshi wanted the block reward to halve every four years, but being a stickler for round numbers, he chose to round it off to 210,000 blocks. And that's where the number 21 comes from.
3296  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is the Bitcoin ecosystem sane? on: July 30, 2013, 10:17:06 AM
First, the main purpose of Bitcoin is to safely hide your money from the eye of the governement who overwhelmes you with taxes and halves your income.
Actually you may legally run a business making lots of BTC without declaring it to the governement, because for them you are not getting actual money so you don't have to declare it.
This is illegal. The government, for the most part, doesn't actually care whether your income is in legal tender, bitcoins, foreign currency, gold, stocks, pork belly futures, or whatever. All individuals and corporations are required to pay tax on the market value of whatever it is they receive as income. If you're attempting something like this and don't understand the tax implications, you should ask your accountant or tax advisor about taxation of barter transactions for information specific to your situation.

But...if you miners exchange your 1,000 BTC to real dollars as soon as you have mined them, the trick does not work anymore!! Now you have lots of real money and you have to declare it.
They had to declare it anyway, for the above reason. And if/when they do exchange their bitcoin for legal tender (or anything else for that matter), they also have to declare any increase in value of their coins between when they mined them and when they sold them (if, on the other hand, their coins decreased in value during that time, they can declare the loss and in some cases get a tax refund for it). Again, ask your accountant or tax advisor about capital gains and losses for more information.

Another issue : you miners can generate bitcoins only if there are transactions for which to find blocks..... but if people don't spend bitcoins .... there are no transaction for which to "solve blocks",  is that true?
Every block is guaranteed to have at least one transaction: the transaction that pays the miner his newly generated bitcoins! There is absolutely no problem with this transaction being the only transaction in the block. Note also that trading bitcoins for fiat money also involves transactions just as spending them does.

It would be even more convenient if this information was placed right on the registration page, that way you would see it even before you sign up and there's no risk it could be lost in your spam folder. Oh wait, it already is. Maybe we need to have a checkbox or something you have to click on to confirm you've actually read it. Oh wait, we do that too.

RESTRICTIONS FOR NEW MEMBERS

After registering, you will be unable to post in any section except "newbies" until you have spent some time on the forum and have published a few posts.

If you are registering to ask a question, please ask it in the newbies section. Do not wait to ask it just because you must post it in "newbies": the question is very likely to have already been asked. If you don't end up getting good responses, you can ask it again elsewhere after you are established, or you can move the entire topic.

If you are commenting on Bitcoin, use your newbie wait time to read more about Bitcoin. If you are criticizing Bitcoin, find similar criticism using the search tool to see which points have already been covered. A good use of your newbie wait time is reading Satoshi's old posts.
