I will feel like we won.  Long before that point, business cycles and the destruction and misery they cause would have been eliminated.  It probably won't completely be paradise, but it may be as close as humanity can ever get.

this is quite a beautiful post, that contrasts with so much that passes for culture these days

Keyfiles stored on your computer would have to be uploaded to their servers for hashing, OR your client side browser will have to perform the hashing offline, and submit your result online.

In either case, MITM or eavesdroppers can intercept the keyfiles. There would have to be some sort of public key or SSL encryption going on for this to work, so no one else can grab your keyfile or the hash of that keyfile.

If your computer is compromised, they can get your keyfile.

but how would they know which out of 1x10e6 files is my key file, or which combination of 2, 3 or more key files is are my key files?

how do they even know i use a key file???

Why someone would create such chain? If it's for local spending, or for some entities with established relationship then why they would use it in a first place, why just don't use trusted third party (in the case if you trying to keep the blockchain more clean), no hashing, no mining, small fees, very simple.

to avoid going to Fiat

to have a very very very fast chain

to not have to dip into main BTC funds outside of a controlled environment.

3284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: the disposable blockchain on: April 29, 2013, 06:58:33 AM
In the near future, I wonder if there will be time limited disposable blockchains, eg some corp protects it's short term disposable blockchain with significant hash, but credit on that chain, is only good for 3 months, much like a prepaid phone card. This may keep the blockchain very small and fast, then that's it.

So only good a a few hundred dollars for local spending. Also the chain would have a limited maximum value, and only be good for local geographical areas, eg local supermarkets, shops etc, so even if you did attack it you would have to travel really far to use the coins, which cuts down the number of possible attacker (though presumably they could be arbitraged back)

Of course the 51% may be the big issue, but if there are lot of theses chains, and I mean thousands/10 thousands, it may be hard to attack them all.  Their is some risk you money will disappear, but this is small and offset by speed. Also the corp may under write the value of that chain in case it gets attacked.

This way they can keep out of VISA etc and its really fast.

Just a thought.

Who would run miners on these blockchains?  What incentive would they have to do so?

The issuing company, eg a bank, vodaphone, coca cola, state transit/metro authority. As a way to trade BTC/LTC into local chains, eg, you know you need to spend 100$ in food / rail over the next three months, they lock in the price at the time you trade in for their services, that is thier service do not change in thier coin price over each 3 months rolling period. Good for rail services/metro areas. Phones, Coca Cola.

and has 4xCoins

is no where near 0.25 of LTC?Huh?

also how many people are active devs for this coin

and what about that massive blockchain you are making???

Here is an example of my logins for banks and Mt. Gox:

Username: kl2uggsyf3yue9g4e2
Password: t#nocq2*l4c*b1yibxf%tazzh0^$)^ft0

Both are limited by what the system will accept. Some of my bank usernames only accept letters and numbers (alphanumeric). Some corporate bank accounts also include a bank generated company code (which I don't have control of).

The above is not an actual account, it is just an example.

For forums, like this one, I use a simple username, like, Dabs. The password is just as long and complicated.

Where my username is not likely to ever be seen by anyone else, I pick a long random username. Banks and bitcoin exchanges and bitcoin wallets are examples.

I would like to see sites use KEY files like true crypt does (but check client side never upload)....a JPG as a KEY file is basically unhackable, even keyloggers would be hard as they would have to record where you pointed your mouse
3291  Economy / Services / Re: BitCoin Lawyer on: April 29, 2013, 01:05:02 AM
wow supergreat i have questions for lawyers all the time but I've never actually known one.

hey maybe you know this one. if i opened a store that didn't touch fiat, so like a little trading post out in the country that was barter only could i keep my prices down by avoiding any taxes? i would price things in silver coin and consider any other offers as well. Theoretically i wouldnt have to pay sales tax and i technically wouldn't have any income to report to the irs.

PM me.

Also, you are not really seeking to "avoid" taxes, which has quite harsh legal penalties, rather you are seeking a tax effective business structure, and tax minimization strategies, which are legitimate activities.
3292  Economy / Services / BitCoin Lawyer on: April 29, 2013, 12:46:39 AM
Hi, I may take (selected) briefs in relation to Bitcoin, Crypto Currecny (CC's), Anti Money Laundering (AML), FinCen guidelines, and related questions/situations, legislation, or legislative instruments, company/business structure and issues.

My qualifications are B.Laws (LLB) UNSW and I also have a B.Eng.Mech.Hons.
I have trained in a Common Law Jurisdiction.

I specialized in the Law of Banking so have formal education in Fiat, Fractional reserve banking, Capital Reserve Ratio's, and related subjects.

I have already consulted to some smaller BTC exchanges, and am drafting a white paper for them in relation to AML.

I will not take every brief, as there may be more suitable services, for example your question may be better suited to straight Contracts, Torts, or statutory relief.

Any Information provided will strictly informational only due to jurisdictional requirements, however depending on the case, I may engage relevant council in the relevant Jurisdiction.

Essentially the problem most client's will face, is very very few Lawyers have any understanding of CC's, Bitcoin, AML, Programming, Fractional reserve banking, and would need about 4 years to come up to speed on all of those areas.

My services circumvent this, I know where to look, and can quickly identify the material issue.

Again I will not take every brief.

Costs.
To look at a Brief (max 3 A4 page summary) 0.5 BTC,

I will not read more than 3 [three] pages of text, as you need to be able to get your material issues into a focused form. It is not economically feasible for me to charge less than this. It also makes you be concise.

At this point I may reject taking on the Brief, with maybe some comments on why.

If I take the Brief on, I will give a time frame, and costs will be 0.5 BTC per hour up to a maximum amount as agreed. (I'm discounting on the hope BTC will rise)

You will receive a view on your position, the merits of your case (if any), and what relief or structure you should pursue.

I am currently very busy already, so PM me with any questions or briefs, I may if I have time reply or not. I may have a little more time in About a month.

Guess there are a lot of GPU clusters coming available now that are basically set up for brute forcing passwords .... "strong" password does not mean what it used to?

thats why you need 20 plus long password
3294  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple and the collectivehead scratch on: April 29, 2013, 12:00:57 AM
ripple itself has no responsibility in enforcing any trust relationship. You are the one trusting, make sure you have reasons to trust.

Do you use any exchange currently? How can you be sure they will credit your account with the amounts you send in, and when you request for it, that they will send your funds back?

This is not specific to ripple, though. We extend banks our trust, probably under the assumption the government will have our backs if the banks misbehave, thus shifting part of our trust to them. In the end it's all down to who we trust, how how much we trust them for (just ask some of the people in Cyprus about that).

As a ripple gateway operator I want to say you can trust me, and so on, but in the end I am only as trusted as your perception of it, and that's an individual decision. Usually we're forced into these trust relationships (wanna get your wagers? Open a bank account.) but with ripple you can actually decide that for yourself.

yes well gateways at least, have some financial intensive to have a rep as they want to make money out of the next trade....individuals, not so much.

Having a good DEV team!!! = N#1, nit like that TRC debacle awol DEV

Here are some new requirements I'm thinking about for the coin:

1) All-Star Dev team: All the devs are already lined up. They are good. Fast, responsive, serious and will be taking care of the protocol.
2) Forum: this is important so we don't always have to clog the alt-forum up. I'm working on this.
3) Plug-and-Play with Bitcoin: This was one of the features that I really liked about Terracoin, the ability to build apps and services that could be plug and play for Bitcoin. It's important to me that people learn about crypto with this alt-chain, and can apply that knowledge back to bitcoin. I'd like to help neutralize the argument that alt-chains drain brain power from bitcoin.
4) Different Address format: No more sending your coins to the wrong blockchain address. The address format will be different.
5) SHA-256: I know I was thinking scrypt/sha mix, but the reasons for going for SHA-256 will become obvious when it's announced.
6) Mailing list for Dev Team: You will be able to be in touch with the devs to talk serious questions. The forum will be for 'consumer level' questions.
7) Multi-Sig: I don't know how many alt-coins implement this yet, Terracoin has it and it's important.
Cool Secret Sauce
9) More secret Sauce. :-)

There will be working block explorers and faucets already up and running when I make a formal announcement plus tutorials on how to solo mine. I may reset the terrawallet to work as an instawallet for this.

The community will probably be split about having an exchange- I will let others make that decision and I will focus on promoting the chain itself.

Still looking for pool operators to be ready to go, although the difficulty will be low enough (at the start) that solo-mining will work well.

Any requests?

It won't be ASIC proof as we need ASIC's for security. However there maybe a social element that protects the coin at the start.
3296  Economy / Speculation / how long till 1mBTC = 1USD? on: April 28, 2013, 02:43:21 PM
how long till 1mBTC = 1USD?

also what will you think of fees then?

edit SI units
m = milli, = 1/1000  = 10^-3           = 0.001
u = mirco=  1/1000000 = 10^-6       =0.0000001
n = nano =  1/1000000000 = 10^-9 = 0.0000000001

edit 2
mili = 1/1000 => 0.001
1l = 1000 ml -> 1 ml = 0.001 l
1m = 1000 mm -> 1 mm =  0.001 m
1 BTC = 1000 mBTC -> 1 mBTC = 0.001 BTC

its very very common, and internationally recognised SI unit. You know, milli meter, microscope, nanotech/ nano meter.

Somewhere in the recesses of my brain, the mind **** that is ripples' intro video try to un knot itself, and the foundational emerged.

What if the person you trusted,

[1] does not pay up to you?
[2] you disagree with the value of their payment?

i vaguely recall i may be paid in a crate of beer from my trusted friend according to the propoganda

3300  Economy / Speculation / Re: In the long run, bitcoin will be worth $0. on: April 28, 2013, 02:08:15 PM
I would think it more likely that Bitcoin evolves little by little, instead of being entirely replaced by an alt. coin.
Hopefully.
But some important innovations are architecture dependent and can not be done. It is at this point where Bitcoin is going to be replaced.

Please elaborate; I thought anything can be changed through a hard fork and which ever version has majority support wins out.

So I would think we'll start to see minor hard forks and each time it won't seem that big of a deal, but 10 years later you'll look back and think "holy crap bitcoin has changed a lot"

For example if I though that i had a much better idea for an alt. currency.  I'd say that it would be better for me to make a private road map of how to make bitcoin into my new currency, and make small incremental pull requests over a long time period until i'd managed to change bitcoin into the better currency that i had envisioned; as opposed to trying to start my currency from scratch with zero public support.

Of course you might complain "But my pull requests or forks might get rejected"...well maybe that means that other people don't think that your ideas are better than the status quo, and starting your own alt. currency is only a way to postpone that realization.  Unless of course you think the current devs are holding bitcoin back by rejecting your code, in which case you take your case to the message boards, if there is popular support for your modifications I'm sure the  devs would be persuaded to include the code updates.
Yes very much can be changed with a hard-fork, but only up to a point.

Currently even something very minor from a software architecture standpoint like the block size limit, which is just a variable when it comes down to it generates massive controversy, and as we have seen bugs.
So I don't think that major changes are going to make it through.

The examples I posted above are things which could be much more easily implemented by starting from scratch. It's not entirely impossible to do this with a hard-fork but you also have to see this from the innovators perspective: Why try to convince the Bitcoin core team, and try to work with an old code-base instead of starting a own project, especially since the reward from doing so is so much higher?
In software development it only makes sense to do a new project once the amount of changes exceed a certain amount. This has been done over and over again and I can't see how cryptocurrencies would be any exception.
See Netscape/Firefox/Chrome, Apache/nginx, Gnu/*BSD.
If changes are sufficiently numerous people will create another software and this has nothing to do if it requires a hard-fork or not, it simply makes more sense.

and you have just identified the other half of why altcoin are popular, apart from the get rich quick motivation is the knowledge that BTC may not be it....!
