3361  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: July 28, 2014, 10:00:59 PM
The ultimate advantage for bitcoin is governments can not stop convertability and it is relatively easy for individuals to hold and transact in bitcoin.
Do not doubt for a moment they won't try.

I can see the IRS being used to harass anybody who dares to withdraw actual bitcoins from these off chain trading platforms like Coinbase or Circle. Have you moved the coins since you withdrew them? That's a taxable event unless you can prove otherwise. Audits all around for everybody who asks for their coins.

If they can make it easier to keep your coins in an off chain system that allows for fractional reserve, and harass and punish anyone who tries to leave the system, they can play all the same games as they've successfully played with gold.

Accountability (via proof of liabilities and proof of bitcoin funds) is possible rather easily. No need to withdraw coins in order to force non-fratctional reserves. At least not in theory.
3362  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: July 28, 2014, 07:24:36 PM
let me feed you some numbers (from site blockexplorer.auroracoin.eu I run, some numbers are estimates and/or rounded or otherwise slightly unreliable):

how many coins in circulation right now?

mined: 574,525 AUR
airdrop #1: 1,126,642 AUR
airdrop #2: 502,758 AUR

remaining pre-mined coins for airdropping: 10,500,000 - (1,126,642 + 502,758) = 8,870,600 AUR

When will all coins have been airdropped?

unsure, depends on the rate of claims (see http://blockexplorer.auroracoin.eu/claims.2.html for airdrop #2 claim stats). If we assume prior claiming behaviour: in roughly 2-3 months.

What will the number of coins in circulation be once the airdrop is completed?

also unsure. There might be coins remaining which will be dropped (if all goes according to plan) 3 months later.

Can someone please answer? Thank you!

yes, you're welcome

Does anyone have a timeline of events for the announcement of this second phase of the airdrop?

There is a tweet on the 25th saying that it will occur at midnight.

I've been preoccupied with other projects and I didn't get much response over the last few weeks when I posted here asking if anyone had heard from Baldur lately so I'm just catching up on what's been going on with the second (and now presumably final) airdrop round.

I would be interested in knowing the timeline of announcements/events before jumping to conclusions but a change to 10x with little to no lead time seems a bit odd to me.

Because the hash rate is so low that the coin will certainly need to be ported to a platform like Ethereum actually achieve decentralization.  The current checkpointing system is a form of centralization that is antithetical to the professed goals of the project and the point of cryptocurrency in general.  Due to the geographically limited scope of this coin, it seems unlikely that the network will ever be independently secured by sufficient mining resources.  Operating as a 'colored-coin'esque token on a network that is truly decentralized and secured seems like a reasonable long term solution.  Has anyone else been thinking along these lines?

Perhaps this accelerated airdrop schedule will provide a better opportunity for porting the coin over to Ethereum at/near the launch of the ether mainnet since most/all coins will likely have been claimed by that time.

I'm curious if anyone has a proper timeline of events or any links to the rationale/justification for deviating from the airdrop blueprint.  Is this the work of Baldur or the dev(s) who posted here some time ago saying that they had begun to take over the project?

thanks for your post.

I received no info myself regarding airdrop changes. It's odd, yes. Good or bad in the end? Don't know. Probably good (just not for speculators who worked on false assumptions)

Regarding porting the coin: AUR is hardly about technology. It's a social experiment and yes: I think porting it to some platform like ethereum or whatever makes sense imo. I think this still has a lot of time, though. First let's see if this coin can get some real adoption going.
3364  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: July 28, 2014, 07:13:09 PM
maybe wait until after airdrop? Because once all airdropcoins are out it won't go much lower. When will the last coin have been airdropped? Do we need to wait another decade? Time so release all airdropcoins, so the market can normalize/stabilize somehow.
It'll also be important to get a dev or two for this coin if Balduro is not there anymore.

before 2nd airdrop ~9.4 million AUR where left unclaimed.

2nd airdrop claims so far: 0.5 million AUR, so 8.9 million are still left.

there have been 35429 claims in the first airdrop phase. If we assume the same amount for the second one, the money will all be dropped soon (couple of months).

go ahead, buy then not now Wink

later will be greater.
3365  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: July 27, 2014, 07:29:40 AM
so what's going on with aurora? Price drop? Air drop? Where is the dev? What's happening? Buy more or start to curse?

good questions.

let me know the answers.

I find it disturbing that the changes to the airdrop blueprint have not been made public beforehand.

I mean honestly you couldn't see this coming? No offence and I'm not trying to get in your feelers.

No I didn't. How did you see this coming?
3366  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: July 27, 2014, 07:01:42 AM
In hindsight, yes, things were clear, but not at the time.

We are dealing with two extremes here: freedom and authoritarianism.  Whether the authoritarianism is socialism, communism, fascism, corporatism, dictatorships, or some other -ism, they are all cut from the same cloth:  power-hungry people seizing the reins of a government by some method (elections, perverting the governing documents of the country, guns or whatever) and then attempting to control everyone else through force and deceit.

The fight isn't between the left and the right, but the free and the ones who want to control and enslave them by hook or by crook.

The sooner people realize the fight is between being free or not - and that includes attempting to use the government to live at the expense of someone else through getting something for "free" (free to them, someone is always paying), the better.

One hopes that Bitcoin will help to make it clear that what you earn belongs to you, not someone else merely because they want it.

+1000.

TPTB want to paint it left vs right to obscure the real issues and the real sides of what is going on.  Free or not.  Controlling others or being in control of yourself.

I agree. Thanks for stating so clearly what shit is really about.
3367  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: July 27, 2014, 06:56:17 AM
Im scared AF to cash out on my little Bitcoins I have, it's very scary to know they can froze your entire saving accounts out of nowhere. My friend tried to withdraw 0.5 BTC and he got his bank account frozen until they basically want to unfroze it. I'll have to re-check im doing it all perfect if I ever want to withdraw some BTC.

I think what you mean is not "withdraw", but "sell", right?

3369  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: July 27, 2014, 06:35:41 AM
Trezor was designed with these goals
1.  even non-tech users (like me or my mother)
2.  can achieve an ultra-paranoid nerdy level of security,
3.  but actually still worry-free and easy to use.

Proof this has been achieved :
We tested trezor with a girl who hardly knew what IS bitcoin, never saw someone doing a transaction and got no single word of explanation.
Just open the box, run it and when ready I'll send you some coins and you should send them back. And she did it  Smiley

Sorry to nitpik, but one positive example doesn't constitute proof. ;-)

For security, you have to ask the ultra-paranoid nerds (or geeks) around here.

It's fucking secure as hell and very hard to screw up.

As every so often: the human element is the weakest link: here are some ways a person could possibly screw it up:

  • get drunk and demo trezor to others in bar, be observed when entereing PIN (and maybe passphrase) and then let the observer steal the trezor when kissing the hot chick. (If you don't think that's easy, consider the hot chick being the attacker)
  • be "smart" and make up your own seed (use restore to put it on device, not sure if easily possible, checksum?): "doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom" should be safe, noones going to guess that, but I can easily remember it. boy I'm smart.
  • leave seed paper backup in vacation luggage and have luggage stolen when staying in hostel
  • leave seed paper backup in safe and have burglar steal it
  • leave seed paper backup in bank deposit box and have government confiscate steal it

This kind of stuff cannot be prevented by satoshilabs directly, but they make every effort to educate the user.

EDIT: for max security I suggest using a passphrase. That makes the latter 3 attacks much harder. Of course, it adds a new (very easy) way to fuck up:

  • forget passphrase
3370  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: July 27, 2014, 06:17:33 AM
Anyone that has a Trezor, would you feel comfortable using this device for long term storage?  Would you say the Trezor is as safe or safer than using offline Armory or Electrum?

Yes, I use it for long term storage already (one passphrase for long-term, one for everyday usage). Only with a portion of my stash for now (~10%), but I plan to change that to ~50%.

But first I will need to make sure the seed is safe (from loss, mainly). It's only at one location currently, which is not enough. A fire could burn the handwritten word-list and if the trezor breaks or is lost before I can access the funds, they are lost. I also yet have to verify I wrote down the wordlist correctly. I will do that once I receive my plastic trezors (too dangerous to use the single trezor I have now).

I feel my coins are very safe with trezor. Also rationally they are very safe... I've pondered many attacks and the only ones I can see succeeding at all can be carried out by people very close to me. In fact only one person could do that and it would still be very hard and risky to pull off for her. Also: she wouldn't and even if: she doesn't have the technical expertise or even see the possibility.

Comparing to electrum (I don't use armory): I don't consider my coins very safe on electrum. Their security depends on the security of my linux box. Since I use that box for all kinds of stuff, I cannot rule out malicious software sneaking in and loggin my key and stealing my electrum wallet. Trezor is much safer in this regard. Don't get me wrong: I love electrum and trezor support for it is implemented (crudely), so I will most likely keep using it.

Passed btc to another finance guys iPhone last night at a dinner table of 8. Even the wives got quiet when I did this for the men. Made a big impression and the skepticism is decreasing significantly amongst these people.

I also made the point that because I was using my vpn to connect with Sweden, that the btc were traveling 11000 mi before landing in his phone. It took 10 s. I only sent him 60c worth but emphasized there is no other payment services that could do that. His words were "that's amazing". So happy that Apple opened back up.

They call me Mr. Bitcoin Smiley

I could've sworn cypherdoc said exactly that a couple days ago, but I can't find the post.

what up?
3372  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: July 26, 2014, 09:02:58 PM
The blueprint said something else:

Stage 2
The Airdrop is reset. Every Icelander will be able to claim a part of the coins, left over from Stage 1 in the premine addresses. The amount of coins shall be calculated in the following way: (Stage 1 remaining coins / 330,000 = coins awarded). In this stage and the following, both the original recipients of the coins will able to retrieve their gifts, as well as other Icelanders. This stage will last another 4 months.

about 1126642 AUR were claimed on first airdrop. Therefore according to above description the second airdrop should have been (10500000-1126642) / 330000 = 28.4 AUR

WTF?
3373  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: July 26, 2014, 06:18:42 AM

The second airdrop will commence at midnight GMT here in Iceland. Hopefully it will bring Baldur back and increase the value. Each drop will be 318 AUR compared to 31,8 AUR in the first one. Crossing fingers because I've leached plenty of Social Security Numbers (Kennitala) from family members to stock up on this shit.

Most Icelanders sold their shares to traders which then exchanged AUR to BTC or they got help from strangers to exchange for them. Some stocked up, like me Smiley

It's good to hear at least one person is stockpiling.

It's been my hope that maybe this time price would be low enough for people to be disincentivized to sell and they would keep their AUR instead, start using and spreading "that shit". ;-)

There was the offer buy 1 get 2 if i remember..

What if it breaks?  Huh  Cry
What are the generally accepted long term channels at the moment?

It is generally accepted that you should never sell your bitcoins for anything less than a price, which is multiple times of the ATH of the prior boom.

- If Bitcoin is in its growth channel, and you panic sell in the bottom, it will cost you most of your bitcoins when you panic buy at 5-20x higher after realizing you were wrong. (If you panic buy threshold is lower, you end up always buying high and selling low, and diluting your holdings.)

- If it it destroyed, you have no way knowing it and being able to salvage the high point of your value. Salvaging a low point, is meaningless when the same outcome in fiat terms can be achieved by selling a few %-points more in the previous boom.

says the guy who sold most of his Bitcoins to buy a "castle".....

it's quite possible he sold the bitcoins at "multiple times of the ATH of the prior boom.", though. For example he could've sold them for $1000 (clearly a mulitiple of $266)

This is true. However I find it exceedingly hard to sell in the previous boom.

If there is indeed a next boom, this advice is very good. If not, it's not good advice.

Wow team, you all must really be depressed to refuse to write anything in the midst of a 2000 coin Chinese pump (which doesn't even get us close to where we were, yesterday, but still). Cheer up!!

Unfortunately looks like the bounce may already be failing. Seems we may go back to retest the low from last night/this morning. I'd like to be bullish, as I am all in, but that drop yesterday caught me off guard. Undecided

I'm not ruling that out, but it doesn't necessarily look like that to me:

That's because you're looking at a 5 minute chart of what could very well be a bull trap.

I stand corrected.

So, Ice.Drill becoming a franchise mine may be a way out of this mess.

@Will, are considering this option?

what's a franchise mine? How would that get icedrill out of this mess?
