341  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 05, 2014, 06:31:28 PM
Huobi now has 2800 in bids down to 3600 CNY Shocked

Over 4000 asks were also added near 3700.... but obviously that is not close to spread. May be fake.
342  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 05, 2014, 03:33:03 PM
For over a week, selling pressure keeps piling up at the nearest asking prices. I would say they are placed strategically. The gap between them is mostly less than 0.1. At other times, a huge ask wall just appears out of nowhere. It seems someone does not want the price to rise. Why?

Just following Huobi, IMO. These huge bid walls keep holding the price up, but that doesn't mean anyone is market buying. Price is staying sideways, so asks fill up on the Western exchanges.

My boss lives in Florida USA, and wants to pay my wages in Bitcoin..I live in NZ! What is the best exchange for him to buy from, and where can I exchange back into NZD my end?
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP???

Cheers
Jane Smiley

I'd say as far as wiring money into an exchange, Bitstamp or Bitfinex. I think they are both fairly quick about crediting wires -- within a few days. There is also Localbitcoins.com. The problem there is dealing with trusted sellers = paying a premium over exchange price. So that is something to consider. I'm not sure what the best options are for cashing bitcoin out in NZ -- if there is a market in your area for in-person cash trades on LocalBitcoins, that is usually best (no fees, no 3rd parties). But I don't see why you couldn't cash out on Bitstamp or Bitfinex. Good luck.

Coinbase accounts (for both of you) might work best for the actual payment transaction - it's easy to use and will track transaction history and such for you. Once you receive your pay you can decide if you want to keep the balance with Coinbase or another wallet (i.e., cold storage, paper, etc).

Isn't Coinbase only available to US residents? Unless things have changed, that was my impression.

Order books look more balanced... seems the crowd is favoring a bounce back, but who the hell knows what the whales are planning.

Volume on that drop wasn't even very impressive (at least looking at Huobi....that's where I pay the most attention). But if you look at momentum, like 1hr RSI, straight down to hell. It worries me not to see much fight on the way down, so even low volume dumps look more significant than they might really be (at least from a volume-weighted perspective).

Wow team, you all must really be depressed to refuse to write anything in the midst of a 2000 coin Chinese pump (which doesn't even get us close to where we were, yesterday, but still). Cheer up!!

Unfortunately looks like the bounce may already be failing. Seems we may go back to retest the low from last night/this morning. I'd like to be bullish, as I am all in, but that drop yesterday caught me off guard. Undecided

See the coindesk news. Explained greatly. You can see a part of that in the above post of mine. Smiley

Kindly,
      MZ

Did you see the other Coindesk news? http://www.coindesk.com/ecuador-bans-bitcoin-legislative-vote/

Quote
The National Assembly of Ecuador has effectively banned bitcoin and decentralized digital currencies while establishing guidelines for the creation of a new, state-run currency.

I know Ecuador isn't a particularly influential place on the rest of the world, but it's not the most bullish news in the world. Yeah, yeah, anti-fragile and all that. Smiley

pepper jack cheese stick with a tobasco slim jim biting each at the same time while washing it down with a monster

Wow, I almost spit out my beer. That sounds atrocious. I don't know how some people do it. No offense or anything. Probably got a stomach of steel or something.

Anyway, as to the topic, I love a good brie spread with crackers and fruit. Smiley
351  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: day trading - what's the catch? on: July 19, 2014, 09:04:31 AM
The more trades you make, the more trading fee you need to pay, and the fee will eat a big proportion of your profit.

You need to always factor the fees into every trade. Every trade you enter, you are immediately already down by the fee + spread. So you need to plan accordingly, and not play for minimal gains that threaten to become losses.

This is exactly why I don't day trade. I just don't see a risk/reward that seems worth it to play $5, $10 moves. If BTC falls a lot, I buy. If it rises a lot, I sell. Generally, this has done me pretty well....
352  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Orphaned block? on: July 13, 2014, 03:50:36 AM
Hey all, still a bit of a newbie with the technical stuff. I made a bitcoin payment last night, about 12 hours ago, and to my surprise when I opened my wallet this morning, the tx showed as unconfirmed, even though I sent a miner's fee (default through blockchain.info). Anyway, when I look at the tx, it was relayed in this block -- https://blockchain.info/block-index/448701 -- which was orphaned.

Does this mean this tx will eventually fail and the original inputs spendable again?

I can't tell for certain unless you tell us which transactionID is your transaction, but I spot checked a few dozen transactions from that block and they all have over 100 confirmations already.

Here is the transaction:
https://blockchain.info/tx/ae082e9d47be8b8cfaee90a1a50fd64d22e6c37d063302b1b4cc50c9da084ec5

Strange, I hadn't thought to check other transactions in the block. I also noticed the unconfirmed inputs had already been spent and confirmed with 93 confirmations. Kind of confused.

Thanks for the answer, ncsupanda. That's sort of what I expected. This has just never happened to me before.

don't worry, just wait for another block  Wink

This block was timestamped 13 hours ago, and there have been 88 blocks found since. I suspect it won't be confirmed.... Smiley

355  Other / Off-topic / Re: What Do Philosophers Do? on: July 11, 2014, 02:29:57 AM
They help evolve human consciousness.  The great are prossecuted or attacked for their abstract conceptualizations.

Totally. This thread is a case in point. Smiley

People can balk all they want at philosophy, but even on a personal level, I found that approaching existential questions with an open mind really helped me grow as a person, and helped to put things in perspective. Science offers little in the way of answers -- remember when scientists thought the Earth was flat? And when Newtonian physics was gospel? -- so the questions are worth asking.

But you need a day job. Smiley
356  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: This altcoin-section has become a massive fail-parade on: July 11, 2014, 01:12:37 AM
Not so different than late 2013. New coins were being churned out then, very little innovation. Pump and dumps everywhere. People expect history to repeat, and then it does. Everybody trying to catch that pump.... Smiley
357  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why does Qt Wallet send change to new, hidden addresses? on: July 11, 2014, 01:00:57 AM
Hi Meuh6879: It's a wallet on my laptop computer, and all it says in the "about" section is "Qt".

Hi Exergy & ShameOnYou: Thanks for the great explanations. Exergy mentioned that "pretty much all wallets" perform this function, however, I'm also using a wallet on my iPhone called bitWallet, and it doesn't seem to do this (i.e. it appears that it sends change back to the main address that I spent from). With this in mind, would you recommend that I use a different iPhone wallet instead?

Change addresses are a different thing. Generally you will get change back to one of the input addresses in the transaction. It wouldn't make sense to generate a new address for change, since the public key would then be exposed anyway.
358  Other / Off-topic / Re: need help Earning Bitcoins online. on: July 10, 2014, 11:53:17 PM
Simple, find faucet sites to earn some free bitcoins, or buy some contract of cloud hashing to mine your own BTC

Faucets pay very little. I do not recommend wasting time on them if you are serious about earning bitcoin. Also, cloud mining is by and large unprofitable. Your best bet if holding mining contracts is to pawn them off on someone more gullible.... Wink
359  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why does Qt Wallet send change to new, hidden addresses? on: July 10, 2014, 11:52:00 PM
Once an address has been used, the public key is exposed. It is most secure to use newly generated addresses for subsequent transactions. So this is done by default when you are shown your default bitcoin address.
360  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Very severe blow to bitcoin on: July 10, 2014, 11:19:43 PM

Andreas Antonop's tweet is the worst news yet that I've heard for bitcoin.

Looks like Andreas is done with the Bitcoin Foundation. Good. Screw the Bitcoin Foundation.

"I can no longer have even the smallest association with the Bitcoin Foundation, because of the complete lack of transparency" https://twitter.com/aantonop/status/486926129409052672

The Bitcoin foundation has gained Pierce and lost Antonopolos.  This isn't going in the right direction at all.

What's the big deal around the bitcoin foundation? It's irrelevant to me. It would probably be irrelevant to the rest of you if you'd just stop paying it any mind! Meanwhile, bitcoin keeps on keeping on....
