Congratulations on your achievement, it's an extra feather added to the crown of our local board seeing one of our own standing out as one of the three selected winners among many contesters.

It is my desire that we get more of such good news and feat from our locals in the forum. With this, I am of the feeling that many more persons from the Naija board will be encouraged to participate by next year's edition increasing our chances of coming out in the 1st position, however if not 1st not below 2nd.
342  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Claw Machines: a category of gambling? on: April 03, 2024, 12:47:41 PM

Here's another definition I dug out from my own end which the first supports yours while the second definition supports my view too: That's why I can say we are both not wrong in which ever way to view claw machine  in regards to gambling

Definitions
1. play games of chance for money;
2. take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

Look at the two definitions and tell me which one appeals more to casinos, and sports betting. Your second definition pertains to life endeavors and has no correlation with casinos or sports betting. Having established this, do you now agree that claw machines is not gambling even though they can be rigged like slots machine. The difference between the two is that in the former you will prize while in the latter you win cash. However, arguing whether it gambling or not doesn't matter. From this Wikipedia article claw machine may be considered gambling depending on its jurisdiction.

For example in the state of California, claw machine according to the law is considered gambling device. See this answer given by an attorney in one of the online forums.

Quote
Yes, a claw machine is considered a gambling device under California law.According to the Bureau of Gaming Control, an illegal gambling device has three features: It is a machine, apparatus, or device (coin operation is not required); Something of value is given to play the device; and The player has the opportunity to receive something of value by any element of hazard orchance (“something of value” is not limited to coins, bills, or tokens—it also includes free replays, additional playing time, redemption tickets, gift cards, game credits, or anything else with a value, monetary or otherwise.) (Penal Code, §§ 330a, 330b & 330.1.)
https://www.justanswer.com/criminal-law/o97zs-claw-machine-considered-gambling-device.html
I wouldn't say I haven't learnt one or two from this and it's quite interesting that we could disagree to agree with proven details to back up the arguments. So it's all a Matter of jurisdiction about the claw machine. But then;

About the meaning of gambling, in a broad sense I think my second definition covers it all in all aspect of the sense of the word "gambling". And I  can say @Stepstowealth  has saved me a lot of explaining just with the way he has couched it with added example of real life issues, which goes to show that gambling or gambling doesn't have to mean just about getting cash as profit or reward but as a phenomenon it goes beyond just cash for a price.

I have never thought gambling could be restricted to only cash rewards until now when it has been a topic for debate and here I am actually wondering what I could describe or call this claw machine.
For one, gambling has been used in reference to many concepts not only because money must be the used or earned, but also because it can refer to a very risky and deadly endeavor.
When parents speak to their children on making a decision about their academic future, they could often use a sentence that involves the word 'gamble,' but without meaning it to be, placing money to win or loss money.
For example, Please John, don't gamble away this once in a life time scholarship opportunity to study at this highly reputable college.
This sentence uses the word gamble but doesn't mean staking money to win or loss money.
343  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Claw Machines: a category of gambling? on: April 02, 2024, 10:48:52 AM
Hey man I disagree, this is gambling whether you call it stake or anything else it doesn't change the fact that you are gambling with your money to win or earn a reward on return. It may not meet your criteria of what gambling may mean to you but it's not just a game in as much as money has been risked in to play.

It's good to have a differing opinion. It creates room to buttress our point.
In most claw machine you win a prize and not money. If you are winning prize you cannot call it gambling. In gambling you win cash.
You simply put in a coin and use the claw to grab or push the teddy into an opening. If you are successful. Your prize is the teddy and not cash. Would you call this gambling?

Before you bring up an counterargument, keep in mind this definition of gambling by McGill UniversityGambling is taking part in any game or activity in which you risk money or a valuable object in order to win money.
I still maintain my stands on the premise that on account of you risking money into the game it automatically becomes a gambling activity be it the rewards is in cash or any prize item.  We have many definitions of gambling and there is none that is universally accepted which makes each definition subjective of the author's perspective towards what should be classified as gambling.

Here's another definition I dug out from my own end which the first supports yours while the second definition supports my view too: That's why I can say we are both not wrong in which ever way to view claw machine  in regards to gambling

Definitions
1. play games of chance for money;
2. take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

344  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I really hold onto my bitcoins in the future? on: April 02, 2024, 09:42:23 AM
Hello all forum members. I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I have been familiar with Bitcoin since 2019. In 2015, when I entered my Honors first year at university, my family situation was very bad financially. I told my family situation to the head of my university then sir gave me a job opportunity. In the house where Sir lives, he has a neighbor, an old woman lives there. The old woman's children lived abroad and had citizenship there. My job was basically shopping for him, withdrawing money from the bank, basically working as his runner.  He paid me $100 a month. I could save $30 dollars a month and put that money in the bank. The old lady died just three months before my honors final exams started. I worked under that old woman for three years and seven months. After completing the final exam, I was not sure what to do with the money, whether to keep it in the bank or not, then a friend of mine told me to invest the money in Bitcoin. I didn't think about it at first but I spent a month browsing the internet about Bitcoin. Later I became interested in Bitcoin. I withdraw my bank money and invest in Bitcoin. I don't know why I didn't sell Bitcoin when it reached its highest price.  Currently I am unemployed for three years after completing my studies. I am trying hard to find a job but luck is not helping me. I have two tuitions to support myself but it doesn't work like this, it has become very important for me to help my family. I don't know what to do now. Now the bitcoin market has increased a lot, should I sell my bitcoins? I will use it in a small business. Should I be given more time for the job? I have to take a decision in the next two months. Experienced members of the forum give me some advice what should I do.
I'll join the group of members that are encouraging you to give your investment more time since you endured from withdrawing it last year letting it to enter into 2024 you should exercise more patience as we are close to the halving which will increase your investment profit from what you currently have now. The long term holding of many bitcoiners if not all is projected towards the halving as bitcoin is more of an investment asset to it's adopters than a transactional currency for buying and selling.

The exception I can give against advising you from not selling at this period yet is if your situation is a life threatening situation and the urgency of it's requires immediate finance. It is under situation as such that I am not always against people withdraw I their bitcoin prematurely.

346  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Claw Machines: a category of gambling? on: April 02, 2024, 07:42:46 AM

Do you consider this a category of gambling game? What are the chances on long run? Skills matter, or do you have to be lucky, nevertheless?
I don't consider this to be gambling. It can't be. In gambling there is a stake for win. This is just some kind of game.
Hey man I disagree, this is gambling whether you call it stake or anything else it doesn't change the fact that you are gambling with your money to win or earn a reward on return. It may not meet your criteria of what gambling may mean to you but it's not just a game in as much as money has been risked in to play

Quote
It doesn't require any skill. You just need to be smart enough to gather as much money as you can.
There are no odds. And compared to real gambling, you are told to gamble responsibly. In this case everyone is just catching fun. I've seen kids play this game. Nothing but fun. And when you lose, you move one because other people are waiting in line.
For you to be skillful at any game you have  to be smart about it, inversely without being smart while on a game our skill will be under utilize limiting the chances of winning especially in gambling games that requires much part of the input of our skills to profit. There are types of gambling we partake in that doesn't require odds, in fact, odds isn't a yardstick to determine if an activity is gamble or not, it just doesn't count unlike when money is involved.

There are persons that can still get addicted to the game due to the fun it provides, perhaps this particular doesn't appeal to your kind of popular games that's why it doesn't narrow to your viewpoint as gambling in anyway.

348  Other / Off-topic / Re: No interest in gambling if there is no profit or fun to be accountable. on: April 01, 2024, 04:22:51 PM
What then is a casino without fun or profit, even in charity events there's still the inclusion of fun and entertainment how much more a casino that brag itself to be a gambling offering source or agent. When a game is boring it could lead to lost of interest that forcing yourself to continue gaming could lead to multiple losses.

I accept gamble to be an activity that is dominated by an act of luck and chance that we can either make profit or incur losses buy what we shouldn't be deprived of is the entertainment that accompanies the process of gambling. Why we do have gamblers that have not stopped to gamble in spite of not getting profit yet from it is mostly due to how entertaining they feel whenever they engage in their choice of sports or casino games.

Following the above, we should also not neglect our responsibility to keep our gambling life in a balance form. As negligence could lead to our addiction.
349  Other / Off-topic / Re: How can we help beginners not to get addicted on: April 01, 2024, 01:00:12 PM
God who gives all humans fear knows why he did it, sometimes fear is what keeps us alive, for some people its what keeps them going, it is why some are able to make the right decisions too, everything has its advantages and disadvantages.

I will choose to strike fear in the mind of every beginners who wants to start gambling because this will prepare them to be prepared mentally for what they are about to start.

Fear of getting wrecked and fear of addiction will make them to become more cautious and aware of their decisions, those who don't know much about gambling always go too deep and they get lost very fast.
Hardly you will see any legal casino that is without the caution "gamble responsibly", and as a logically being with brains it's expected that coming into the gamble and seeing such warning doing your due diligence by researching to find out the reasons for the warning should be what I expect every newbie gamblers to carryout. They don't have to be spoon-fed all of the times in all things.

Whatever we choose to make of our fears is completely left to us, and we should be ready to chest the consequences because to every action there's a consequence that will follow either good or bad. Hence, I agree with you, fear can be of an advantage or a disadvantage to us if we decide to be wise or foolish with it.

351  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Is lack of proof a problem for you or not? on: April 01, 2024, 12:20:55 PM
For an old existing that has been in operation for years and have earned a wide range of reputation I fear if gamblers with bother going to the extent of inquiring to verify if they have a proof operational license or not. In the gambling industry trust is everything which is why new casino's despite having a proving license gamblers are still skeptical to make use of them because that trust is what they haven't earned going by their time in the industry.

Although plenty gamblers choose to make use of a license casino as they feel secured using them believing it will be hard to make a scam exit or exhibit certain scam behaviors and actions  by licensed casino. And yes, licensing casinos can largely reduce many of the scams we experiencing with online casino.

I had a similar discussion sometime back and there were fascinating replies to the question, maybe some persons would want to read some of those replies too https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5479472.msg63397945#msg63397945

353  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Amazing Vintage Slot Machines on: March 31, 2024, 10:53:52 PM
Whether or not you are playing on a machine that might be tight or loose would likely depend on whether the machine you are playing on is in a legal jurisdiction or not. Illegal operators would probably set the machine for the highest house setting whereas legal establishments probably have to abide by some sort of regulation.
Whether the machine is in the hands of a legal or an illegal establishment doesn't change the fact that there must be some sort of a level adjustment done on the working mechanism of the machine to making sure as a casino they do have an edge over the gambler. It doesn't and has never been a 50/50 thing.

The only difference I will establish here between that of a legal and illegal casinos is that as an establishment that is legal they will be be very sensitive to the laws guiding their operation under such jurisdiction therefore adjusting the machine to a very minimal level that it's hard to notice but those of illegal jurisdiction they don't give a damn the adjustment can be glaring to a gambler just by the results they are getting from the machine's.

The commonplace am trying to fall on here is that no matter how legal a casino might operate it can never give an equal hedge to the gambler with itself. There will always be a mark of differentiation.
354  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2023/2024 on: March 31, 2024, 03:28:47 PM
Liverpool has been confirmed to be at the top of the Premier League standings temporarily and this will be very good for Man City and Arsenal who will fight tooth and nail to come away with 3 points. With Liverpool victory the two teams cannot share points, because if they want to catch up the only way is to win today match. For Liverpool they will still be 1 point ahead if Man City wins 3 points but if Arsenal wins 3 points then both have the same points collection. There is no other choice but to reduce the gap, because that way Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal can continue to compete until the end of the season.
Liverpool having played the role of the better side in entire game with 30 shots and 8 on target showing dominance as host team there was no doubt  that they were going to win the game at the end. The competition between these three teams Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City is getting more and more interesting as the three keep replacing each other at the top of the table.

It's going to be a painful result for Manchester City if their game against Arsenal tonight end in a stalemate draw because the result won't change anything with respect to their position on the table currently as they will still remain in 3rd place, it's all a win that they need to come out for and that's why I expect this game tonight to be very offensive and tactical between the two teams and it will determine a lot for them in the race for the EPL title. Every Liverpool fans will be wishing to see this game end in draw to maintain their top flight position right now but will that be possible?
355  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: While placing bet what comes your mind on: March 31, 2024, 02:48:52 PM
Yesterday was trying to place bet and during the process something in me keeps telling me to increase your wager do you know if you would hit something you never won before.. I was like is this how other people are being controlled by gambling or is it how it works? I said, no wonder some people gamble and finishes their allocation for the week or month. This can even lead someone to also go borrow if this feeling is not killed and stop, you can also see that this attributes in gambling addiction.

However, have you had this feeling while gambling before be it offline casino and online casinos?

That's not understanding your own limits and greed setting in.  Your first guylt on how much to bet something is typically the right amount based on whatever risk appetite you have for that.  Then greed sets in telling you when (not if) you win your winnings will be higher.  Risk starts getting adjusted or overrides by greed.  Happens all the time.  You need to understand if you are susceptible to that and just stay away then.
As gamblers we all get that instinctive thought or voice in our head and for me I think it tries to test our level of maturity and selfcontrol we have towards gamble. What I can chip in here is that if a gambler found out that at several occasions he has fallen for that then he should next time just carry with him a specific amount of cash which he will be willing to gamble all (for offline gambler) and if it's online same can apply by only depositing a limited amount you can afford to risk in.

We should pay great attention to our gambling habits for us to know our different area of strength and weakness to be able to carve out a strategy against it to prevent us from succumbing easily. Doing so could be helpful.
356  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can family members help a gambling addict? on: March 31, 2024, 06:14:30 AM
Many people are going through gambling addiction but they manage to keep it a secret from their families and loved ones. The only people that know about their gambling activities are their close friends. In the event that you are one of those close friend to a gambling addict, do you think it is right to tell their loved ones with the intention that they will be able to talk to him and help him overcome his addiction? Can the advice of loved ones even help? What is the most effective way of going about gambling addiction.
It's a common behavior of addicts to try to conceal their addictive attitude/behavior away from the knowledge of family but it's not something I'll encourage any addict to do because in everything in life family comes first even in a problematic phenomenon.

As a friend to a gambling addict and seeing that my gambling addict friend doesn't have that courage to make known his problem to his family and battling it on his own, being a good friend I should know that I can't help him more than his family members can even if I try to give all the help I possess it can't be compared to that of family. And when family come together to show support it makes the situation mild to handle as more hands has come on deck. And I am convinced that at the end my gambling addict friend will thank me for helping him reveal to his family what he was too shy and afraid to do.
357  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Who's winning more casinos or gamblers? on: March 31, 2024, 06:00:50 AM
Every day, thousands of dollars enter or leave the treasury of casinos, and we always hear about a gambler who wins or loses a large sum of money.

The thing that caught my attention is that the casino never loses. The money that you win is not the property of the casino, but of another player. The casino is in the process of recycling the money that the players have invested. There is always a winner and a loser, and when you bet with an amount of money, you bet against the money of all the other players. If you win, they will pay you from their money, and if someone else wins, they will pay himBTCBTC from your money.

So the casino remains the biggest beneficiary, right?
Yes what you said is completely true because casino companies never give their own money to others they may give someone else's money to a loser who wins. We may never consider this thing and when we do, we don't think like you. Casino companies are running their casino platform with your money and in this case the casino company has a lot of profit. If you consider that, I will be very impressed with you. However we use gambling as entertainment, we don't think too deeply about it.
Casinos may only in the beginning stage of running the business use a part of their own money in paying winnings from players as i believe by then they must not have gotten that large number of users at that very beginning but to when they have gained reputation and saturated the market and gotten a large users thats when they have no penny of theirs in any payment to  a winner as the money for the payment are all accumulated losses of other unlucky gamblers.

Casinos has every instruments and resources they need in the industry to make them stay profitable in the market and all these hedge they possess is what a common gambler doesn't, not even a 5% of it out of a 100%, that's the reason we as gamblers shouldn't bother trying to  beat them at their own game. Just enjoy the fun, be entertained and hope for a bright luck to be on the winning side more often than not.
358  Other / Off-topic / Re: What if an employee of a betting company misuses company funds for gambling? on: March 31, 2024, 05:28:07 AM
Do you think a betting company or casino will understand and not arrest an employee who has access to company funds and then misuses it for gambling? If this employee claims that he is battling from gambling addiction, will he be considered for a lighter punishment? If you own such a casino or betting platform, what will you do to such an employee, understanding that addiction to gambling can make people make decisions that are unexpected.
The act by the employee is an act of stealing and the law will have to take it course knowing fully that being a gambling addict is not an excuse to go against the company's working policy.

Assuming I have to let such worker go free without any consequential punishment it's as though I am abetting and endorsing his action by being emotional to an administrative case that am supposed to act impersonal about it and by doing so another employee could act in like manner and come up with another excuse of probably mentally illness this time. And that alone can cause the downfall of my company because every business needs money to keep running it's affairs and be in competition with their counterparts.

I do believe that punishing that employee is another way of making him understand the negative impact of gambling addiction on his person and if he is wise enough, after facing the punishment he will seek for support from professionals therapists on how to kill the addiction.

An early goal for Luton town in less than 5 minutes in the first half. A poor defending from the Tottenham Hotspur defenders led to that early conceded goal. However,  it's impressive that Tottenham has recovered possession on the game as Luton town is faced with much pressure with Tottenham playing them half field with Luton  trying all means defend their 1 goal. If Tottenham could make good result with their chances this first half could either end in a 1-1 draw but then Timo Werner needs to stop losing those important chances in the goal mouth.
The beginning of the half where the concentration was still lacking was well utilized by Luton who immediately looked for momentum with 1 goal they got in the first 5 minutes and it was very good for them because they realized that with the current conditions they got a goal from Tottenham it would be very difficult so in this match towards the end of the first half it seemed that it was very good for Luton who managed to excel temporarily.

But indeed things like this still don't make them safe because after 1 goal from Luton Tottenham's reaction was actually very good by dominating in terms of opportunities and possession but until now they haven't managed to get a goal back but with their performance now I think it's still very possible for them to equalize the score and even make a comeback in today's match.
Time is still long enough now and now it's just a matter of seeing what Postecoglou will do in the second half because it looks like for the first half now they won't be able to do much because in a few minutes the first half will end.
Quickly after that 1 goal from Luton Tottenham starting mounting offensive attacks dispossessing Luton and creating goal opportunities but are just unable to score and it's as though they are with a hard luck in the first 45minutes. They need to change their tactics when they return to the second 45 minutes not placing much focus on Timo Werner as it seems he's lagging to secure a goal after several chances to get his team the needed result, which from Postecoglou countenance he doesn't look please with how the first half had to end with his team on the losing side.
