Doc, I have a noob question about the BitMinter client.

Would you say that minimizing the client accomplishes the same thing speed-wise as switching it to Performance Mode?  The reason I ask is because I'm wondering whether adding a check box under Options for "Start in Performance Mode" would essentially be a duplicate of "Start Minimized".

If there is a difference, would the option to start in performance mode be a good addition to the client?

We'd need a coalition of major pools setting a deadline and removing CPU-mining support "for the sake of server loads"

That sounds like a great idea to me.  Does anybody here have authoritative contacts at other pools that we could ask to hop on board with phasing out CPU mining?

Switching servers sooner than later sounds good to me.

Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts.

If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic.

Also:
- You must have made one post in order to send PMs.
- You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature.

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted.

Sounds like a good policy.  I've noticed fewer trolls on these boards than most I've been on over the years.

Is there a reference fan style heatsink that fits the v2 5870. I just got one with the dual fans and it runs around 90c.

Arctic Cooling's Accelero Xtreme 5870 might be a good option:

According to the third post on this page, it works fine, other than having to cut one of the RAM sinks before installing it.

Good luck!

Seems like their is alot of scammers when it comes to bitcoins.

Yup, anything that one person has and another person wants will lead to scammers.  Sad, but true.

If you have more than 1000 Bitcoins in your wallet:

1. get yourself a low cost netbook.
2. Install not bloated linux (like archlinux) or FreeBSD or OpenBSD (in order of growing paranoia).
   - make sure that the above is done with ecrypted partitions and swap (plenty of guides on the net).
   - make sure that the above is done while offline as much as possible (for truly paranoid ones).
   - make sure that you do not not even configure wireless hardware, let alone using it
   - physically plug in Ethernet cable when you need connectivity for a minute or so
3. Install bitcoin client, generate a bunch of bitcoin addresses (current account)
4. Over time transfer in small amounts your funds from your existing client to the addresses created in step 3
5. Keep this used exclusively as bitcoin client and nothing else, plug in Ethernet cable when you need to transfer money.
6. Keep this hardware wallet safe.
7. Creating a bitcoin savings account and making secure backups is still need to be done as described in multiply guides elsewhere.

P.S. Do not forget your passwords.

This is a very good idea!
Basically, Linux is not secured more than M$ -Windows and surely not immune to trojans and viruses but the fact is that malware (Trojans / Viruses / Spyware etc) developers put all their efforts on Windows make Linux systems a bit safer.

Your idea is good. Note that old PC or old laptop (cost less than $100) can run special Linux distros such as Lubuntu or Damn Small Linux (DSL) with beautiful graphics.
Just search "Lightweight Linux".

I agree, very cool idea!  I've never had near enough bitcoins to need to secure anything, but it's good to be thinking about this sort of thing as I get more into it.

Hi all.  I've been reading posts here for about four months.  Figured I should finally get things in order so I can post.
