341  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The Habanero Project - Batch 2 Shipping June 9th, $850 on: June 03, 2014, 03:59:06 PM
I just gave 3/4 of habanero to UK government. Pat Man get something sorted Smiley

I feel your pain.......
We won't get an EU distributor set up for this batch. Going forward we might, but we'd be wanting to do some due diligence there and make a trip to meet the potential partners, so it would be after we're certain there's still chips available after tomorrow.

However, if it works out well for EU customers we could definitely support a group buy or two. I am not sure how the VAT works over there, but if there is a benefit to it we could definitely work with someone / some people to (legally) help EU customers avoid paying excess tax.

Through the "Isle of Man" perhaps..

 Huh You guys don't really understand VAT do you. (not you MrTeal, thats understandable)

Selling it via a UK/EU reseller won't make any difference. The price will still need to have VAT added on to it for consumer sales.

The reseller will have to pay VAT to get them into the country, you think he's not going to charge VAT on top of the price? Firstly he has to by law if he is VAT registered, secondly even if he isn't VAT registered he has to recoup the VAT he paid to import them.

So it won't make much difference paying VAT yourself to bring them in or paying to the EU/UK reseller when you checkout.

I do not know the VAT laws myself but my understanding is if MrTeal opened this for EU/UK it would be to license the board spec to be produced and chips populated locally in the EU/UK... unless I am mistaken...

Does VAT still apply to that?

info of my experiences so far

Corsair h100 with stock fans

standard MinePeon Version 0.2.4.6 image running on RiPi

) had to switch the miner from bfgminer to cgminer 4.0.1 to get it to work, but it's not a version that supports all the hashfast features.  I gather I can get an enhanced version somewhere?

) evenly tightened the cooler nuts, tight, but not too tight.  waiting for release of the tool to fine tune the temperature/nuts.

) 4: HFB 0: 650MHz  93C 100% 0.87V  | 603.4G/629.0Gh/s | A:294297 R:14772 HW:1301 WU: 8751.2/m

) couldn't get 4 chilies and one haspanero to be recognized and running by minepeon.  finally figured out I had to sequence the power up.  turn on the chilies and wait for them to finish their boot.  turn on the haspanero and wait for their boot.  THEN turn on the RiPi.

What temperature should these be running at?  is 93C at 650Mhz way hot?
What components other than the ASICs need to be kept cool for max speed? i.e. is it worth it blowing air on top or bottom of the board?

Any dividend this saturday?

As soon as ghash stops having the annoying 'insufficient funds' error.
Thats a sign to get more hardware running Smiley
[/joke]

I don't know why but every few weeks I get the error for about 15 minutes.  It must be an issue with coins in their hot and cold wallets.

It has to do with the last confirmed block value of BTC credited... if you subtract exactly that amount from your total balance and withdraw that... it will go through... or just wait till a few more confirms.
344  Economy / Securities / Re: Lab Rat Data Processing, LLC (LabRatMining) Official Announcement on: May 31, 2014, 05:11:44 PM
To anyone concerned about FinCEN, my lawyer has deeply reviewed the subject to the point of making calls to DC and has determined that with the moves we've made, we are 100% in compliance.  We will continue to monitor the situation as we all know it could change at any moment.

Exactly... he determined the same thing I have... your business falls outside the definitions of the FinCen Final Rule and therefore, until it changes again... LRM is not an MSB until contacted to dispute otherwise.
345  Economy / Securities / Re: Lab Rat Data Processing, LLC (LabRatMining) Official Announcement on: May 31, 2014, 12:55:15 PM
The ruling makes it clear that both my operations as well as those of Lab_Rat would be considered to be Money Transmitters, requiring FIN-Cen registration as well as licencing as a money transmitter in each and every state that has money transmitter laws in which we would do business.

Toldja.

I feel you are being unfair, biased and a bit broad in these statements... as I also feel the Final Rule is also still a bit broad and needs to be further defined... here is what I see...

Quote
An administrator or exchanger that (1) accepts and transmits a convertible virtual currency or (2) buys or sells convertible virtual currency for any reason is a money transmitter under FinCEN's regulations, unless a limitation to or exemption from the definition applies to the person.

Two things here... 1) LRM only accepts virtual currencies from users as part of the buy in process to participate in the mining operation... LRM only transmits those funds to pay bills and buy equipment as a USER by definition and then 2) the definitions above do not take into consideration the POOL aspect of minting... this deficiency is the main reason why there is still need for clarification of what is an MSB... if LRM was not using a pool then it would be clear... LRM never ACCEPTS virtual currency in its day to day mining... it MINTS IT. I see no place where minting is defined properly. FinCen is lacking substance here.

Quote
FinCEN's regulations define the term "money transmitter" as a person that provides money transmission services, or any other person engaged in the transfer of funds. The term "money transmission services" means "the acceptance of currency, funds, or other value that substitutes for currency from one person and the transmission of currency, funds, or other value that substitutes for currency to another location or person by any means.

Here I clearly see that without defining the difference between receiving payouts from a pool or solo mining, or defining that they are both technically the same mnting process AND NOT money transmission, LRM never takes currency from one person to send to another... LRM is involved in the MINTING of said currency and is the original owner (other than the lacking pool definition aspect) and therefore is not accepting the payout currency from anyone... it OWNS it and then PAYS it which should clearly be an exception in the eyes of FinCen.

Quote
A person that creates units of this convertible virtual currency and uses it to purchase real or virtual goods and services is a user of the convertible virtual currency and not subject to regulation as a money transmitter. By contrast, a person that creates units of convertible virtual currency and sells those units to another person for real currency or its equivalent is engaged in transmission to another location and is a money transmitter. In addition, a person is an exchanger and a money transmitter if the person accepts such de-centralized convertible virtual currency from one person and transmits it to another person as part of the acceptance and transfer of currency, funds, or other value that substitutes for currency.

Again, here FinCen attempts to define all methods of de-centralized minting, but fails miserably because they do not understand the entire process... LRM is a pool mining participant and receives payouts from the pool itself so by this bad definition would seem to be an MSB, but it will eventually be redefined after someone is litigated to reflect that mining operations, rather by pool or solo, are minting and thus OWN the coins before they distribute them, and the distribution is not resale in any way.

This may get flipped on us soon and pools and mining operations will become MSBs one day... but as it stands now, LRM is in good standing and NOT an MSB as FinCen has yet to satisfactorily define how a pool or mining operation that rewards its participants is to be treated as neither fall under the definitions as they have been presented.

Order arrived safely, I hope.  USPS crushed the box pretty good, no obvious damage except for a few bent fan header pins.

Waiting on cooling parts to arrive, and the wife's permission to ditch yardwork for a few hours.   Cheesy

USPS Priority my ass... hope this board wasn't damaged too bad in ways you can't see... I can imagine if the pins on the fan header were bent what other parts had undue pressure applied to them.

My wallet lags really bad trying to get it to sync. As in not responding, then might load up a block and pause again. Been trying for 36 hours to get it to fully sync and not doing so well... about 1K blocks behind. Could it be due to the age of the coins in wallet? I have not spent one grain on anything so they are from the start of the coin.

Yes, it could be. To disable the PoS minting you could use '-reservebalance=<xxx>' switch. Set <xxx> to the amount that is bigger than your total. When the wallet get in sync - restart it without this option.

Okay now your speaking something I have not done ever with a wallet. Does that go into the console? If so that might be a problem too unless I delete everything from the appdata folder again and re download the block chain due to the wallet freezing all the time....as in not responding

He means from a command prompt from the folder your QT is in.

Open a command prompt... change directory to where your grain-qt.exe is... then launch it with this command...

grain-qt.exe -reservebalance=999999999

that should launch the wallet and tell it NOT to stake anything less than 999999999 GRA. Once synced... close and then launch as usual.

Are there technical limitations to the amount of data you can store in the blockchain?  I see you set the character limit at 256, but could you put, say, an image in that field if you wanted to?  I imagine the blockchain would get pretty large and unweildy if you were to store the Harry Potter series in 1080p on there, but there could be some room for interesting applications.

Just curious -- where did you get the 256 character limit from?  That's not correct, it's actually 500 bytes (technically 512, but we truncate confessions at 500).  And no, an image wouldn't make it intact (or any binary data) based on how we're passing and storing data.

But yes, storing arbitrary data (that can be arbitrarily large) in the blockchain is something to be explored, although disk space may need to be cheaper, as it could discourage people from running full nodes if the blockchain is Terabytes in size ...

It also gets into legal questions, e.g. is it legal to run a full node if the Harry Potter movie is a part of the blockchain (regardless of if you ever plan to watch it)?

Did we just postulate Torrentcoin?
Smiley
Could even just store the .torrents in the blockchain.
OP, I mis-remembered the character limit.
Another use could be storing wikipedia entries on a blockchain.  Just trying to think of things that would be good to have duplicated/distributed across the globe for preservation.

I think we did postulate it!  It's not a new idea though, e.g. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=145278.0

A developer (or dev team) contacted us just before our launch and asked about the very same thing and we are considering a possible collaboration.  It's not a far stretch from what we have built (as you noticed) to lend some sharing efforts for that kind of project.

PM me about this when you have some serious people willing to start... I discussed this with members of the Franko Collective and Cryptsy backroom and we came up with some really good ideas and pointed out where code already exists for most of the needed features. A handful of great coders and a few idea and research people could get a true P2P blockchain based torrent tracker going in a few months if not sooner.

It's not extendable, one time pre-pay fixed term.  You can prepay more now (would recommend 4 months).

5 Shares * $8.5 * 1 Month = $42.5

If I want to extend it before the month ends is it the same process on your site?

5 shares sounds fair for your situation; I'd love to have you participate.

Questions:

I only owned 3 shares in GB4 but was paid for those 3 just before I bought 2 Ants worth from you... a total of 20 shares worth to claim 2 Ants. (They are hashing like little demons BTW!)

1. Do I qualify to participate at 20 shares worth?
2. Do we have to buy in at the amount of shares we took equipment for... i.e if I do qualify... can i just grab a few shares worth... like the 3 I had to start with or maybe 5 instead of the entire 20?

I could see throwing a few BTC back at this to be a part of the new solution... I was looking forward to your new platform before everything went topsy-turvy.

Other than we are awaiting a fully patched and updated client... why will my QT never connect anymore? Added all the addnodes listed... never syncs... not even on a new clean startup no chain or wallet or peer.dat.

Try these, please:
Code:
addnode=24.107.155.164
addnode=192.168.8.131
addnode=89.110.148.247
addnode=76.95.184.181
addnode=54.196.227.51
addnode=2.248.164.206
addnode=89.101.12.95
addnode=173.48.184.25

Syncing so TYVM!

Now... you need to detail the POS specs in the OP... did not find one mention of percentage or timing in the OP nor the other forum other than the website stating 5% annual interest.

Have there been any coins that store information on the blockchain in this sort of way?

BTC has had this from the start... google it...

Yes, it has, but to a much lesser extent (less characters). Also, try building something like this on top of their blockchain without getting the smackdown :-P

Quite right about characters... but they could not stop you from inserting these into blocks via the same method you are using... all that changed here is the actual tag is added whereas putting into BTC would require the parsing site to use some sort of identifier at the start or end of the text to flag it so you got only confessions.

Regardless... the functionality has been here... CFN just took it to the next level and made it a real feature worth using. Technically... no one would have to use the site to create a confession... if they knew how to craft the entire transaction and submit it raw they could add it on their own and your site would parse it for only 1 satoshi + fee.
357  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BETA][EXCHANGE][REALTIME] CoinEX realtime exchange on: May 26, 2014, 10:56:56 PM
Is there any coin you can still mine on Coinex? Every coin I tried failed. If Erundook is not going to let people mine, then he has no chance of recovering the exchange in which case why is it still online?
Mining is mostly irrelevant to recovery. It was/is an exchange first and foremost.

To that, simply functioning as an exchange would generate fee's to repay everyone with, which was the original intention. If the site can not function as an exchange, then there is no chance of recovering. It's not functioning as an exchange however, so recovery is dead.

I too wish the site would just shut down until such time that he either comes up with the rest of the coins or admits everyone is screwed and is never coming back. Either way, keeping the site open is just doing more harm than good and costing unaware new customers money, which makes it look all the more like a scam.

Erundook has been awol for over a month now (he's not even lurking, just hasn't bothered to come here at all anymore). Hasn't even bothered to reply with insults to his customers as he was before. Even MtGox handled things better, at least we know what is going on over there. We don't know jack about what is going on at CoinEX (and if we leave it up to Erundook, we never will).

So you're guess is as good as mine. At this point, I'm assuming that he jumped ship and ran and that the site is as good as dead.

wonder if any stopped to think if he has already been handled by the other Russians after he was originally doxxed.

Holy cow I stayed awake for this? Horrible launch, not one block has been found by a pool... over 140 blocks now on the chain and even me with 36 MH/s on solo I can't get a block...

Until at least 1 pool can show they can find a block... I am back to my usual mining spots... FAIL!

Have you updated configs? is your wallet synced?

Are you Effing kidding me kid? NM... it is not worth the trouble I am going to bed...
