Kano or anyone who might know can you please tell me if buying an Open Box Ledger Nano S is secure thing to do?  Because I bought one couple of days ago and it said new in the description but now the guy tells me that he opened the box to take some pictures of it!  I think when I was setting up my old Ledger wallet it let me pick from 2 options, one was setting up a new wallet and another was to recuperate an existing wallet so he couldn't have done anything to save something in order to access it later on could he? Huh

Thanks!

Guys I have an urgent question!  I have some BTC in my old Ledger wallet which didn't make 2 different accounts for BTC and BCC yet but I need to sell BTC right now but at the same time don't want to loose the BCC.  Is there an exchange where I could transfer the my BTC and It would split the coin in 2?  Or is it even possible?

Thanks!

You can't spent a coin twice! It's one or the other. I'm right or?

If you had a BTC coin before the split in a wallet with private keys then you should get 1 coin of BCH for every Coin of BTC that you've had.  Although there is still a lot of confusion on how to split them, well at least to me and at least until I get the Nano S wallet in like 5 days. Smiley. Where from what I've read it shouldn't be difficult.  Will see.

And have you seen the price go up to over $600 already for the Other coin?  Was like $250 this morning I believe!

So how does that work? All my BTC is in my Core Wallet. I thought only Exchanges gave both coins in a split to cover customer losses. I can't imagine a wallet would care nor grant you an equal amount of an alt coin within itself or am I reading something totally wrong here?

Actually no, all of the exchanges that I have an account with send me an email before the split, specifically saying that they won't support BCH so you better pull your BTC out to a wallet that will support it like Ledger Nano S because if you don't you won't get your BTC split with them and won't get the second coin.  Although as far as I know some exchanges told their customers that they'll give them some BCH but there's no guarantees unless you had the private keys of your wallet.

Well what that means is the 'Ledger' is watching 2 blockchains - not just BTC, but BCH also.
Will be interesting to see if the 'brand new' BCH chain code is reliable ...

Anyway, from now on, the two are unrelated, except that the addresses in each use the same keys.

I see, ok thanks!  Wink

Kano I have a question....  do miners have to pick on which of the 2 networks they need to mine the BTC or BCC?  Or do we just mine regularly and if we do then we just receive the BTC or the BCC as well?  Might be a dumb question but I pretty new to this stuff.   Undecided
We mine BTC only.
From the fork onwards, new block rewards and new transactions are only one side or the other.

If you have a wallet you control, you can clone it and make it into a BCH wallet using the BCH version of bitcoin.
However, it muxt have been done before the fork, to 'just work'
After the fork (now) you have to roll back the blocks and transaction since the fork, so what bitcoin does is effectively wipe it all and start again, but using your keys from your wallet, it of course doesn't wipe the wallet, and then rebuilds everything back up to the fork, then continues on again on the other fork.

WARNING, if you do clone your wallet, I've heard from someone who did it, that the fork bitcoin client uses the same folders by default, so will overwrite you bitcoin data.
Thus you'd have to use the datadir option to point it to another folder, or better, run the clone on another computer.

I see, so there will be created some pools to mine BCC only?  It has to be mined by someone right? Huh

And yes I have all of the BTC in my Ledger Nano, although they told me yesterday that it will take them a while and they don't know how to resolve the split issue in the older version of the Ledger wallet.  But they said that the holders of the new versions of their wallets such as Ledger Nano S should be able to see both balances right away in BTC and BCC.  So I was told to buy a new Nano S wallet and do a recovery from my old one.  Smiley.  Thanks Kano!

Payout Information Smiley

So the payout handling for B-Day (yeah I think that name is an appropriate play on D-Day) will be as follows:

I'm queueing up 478254 and 478261 right now to go out as soon as they Mature - as per normal.

The 'expected' Maturity times at the moment are: ~3:50am (478254) and ~5:00am UTC (478261)
That gives a bit over 19 hours to confirm them before 1-Aug 0:20 UTC

Currently we expect to average ~13hrs per block so there's a reasonably high probability they will both be confirmed before B-Day
If not, well I don't REALLY think it matters, but we'll see anyway Smiley

478295, on the other hand is expected to Mature at ~10:40am UTC, and with the ~13hrs before it's average 'expected to be confirmed', that lands it close to B-Day arrival time.

So, I'll hold back sending out the payment for 478295 (and any blocks found after 478295) until tomorrow.

--

Again, I don't see why there should be any problems at all with Bitcoin on B-Day, but considering the melodrama going around, it's not really that big a deal to add a short delay to just a few payouts.

... and anyone who is really concerned can also have me hold their 'unqueued' payouts until they are no longer concerned Smiley as per the web site says.

--

Edit: I also set 42,000 sat in each one as a txn fee - about $1 Tongue - to see if that makes others confirm them also.
The Bitcoin transaction rate really has dropped recently - often block aren't full - so there's probably a higher chance of it getting into another pool's block if there's some tiny fee in it.
Anyway - we'll see if that makes any difference for those 2 payouts.

Thanks Kano!  Indeed all payouts came in before the D day.  I transferred both to cold storage but didn't have the time to transfer the last one but it's ok, let's see what happens to it lol.

I'm getting emails all day today from all of the online wallets/exchanges (where I've been registered) saying that if you want to get the BTC cash you better pull your funds out since all of them decide not to deal with the BTC Cash and all saying exactly same thing that they are staying on the same path and don't care that VIaBtC wants that second blockchain.  So if you keep your BTC with them alter split you will still have only BTC.  Smiley
Firstly, and most importantly, as has been said here many times, by many people:
If you have BTC, not in your control, the person who controls it decides what happens to it.

--

So ... the online wallets/exchanges are telling you to pull your funds out of them?

That sounds a bit suspicious ... and would mean those online wallets/exchanges are heading for a crash Tongue

--

Anyway, it's all to do with Bitmain who stated they were making a (tiny) fork of BTC called BTCCash, coz there was a risk on Aug-1 of the Miners being forced to use segwit.

What of course happened, as we all know, is that all the miners switched to BIP91 already, so the morons in the UASF can be totally ignored.

--

However, Bitmain has decided to go ahead with their BTCCash hard fork, against what they said they would do.
Yeah you can't trust anything Bitmain says Tongue

Here's their Blog on the subject (yes I already read it back when they posted it)
https://blog.bitmain.com/en/what-is-bitcoin-cash/

--

What does this mean?

It means that a small % of the miners at Bitmain will be mining another fork of Bitcoin, called BTCCash, that no one else will be allowed to mine, initially.

Best mining solution? Ignore it.

Best Wallet solution? Make sure you control your BTC.

Yes, they are all telling me to pull funds of them but only if I'm interested in having both coins after the split, pretty much they are all saying that if the coins are kept with them they are saying that they won't give you another coin of BTC cash for every BTC coin that I you have.   Cheesy

I've received pretty much the same message from Coinbase, Bitso, BitPanda, Volabit.  Here are couple of examples what they wrote me:

BitPanda

If you wish to hold Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, you need to withdraw your Bitcoins from your bitpanda wallet before 01:00 pm CET July 31, 2017. If you are not interested in Bitcoin Cash, no further action is required.

Bitso

Deposits, withdrawals, and trading of ETH, XRP and Pesos will be unaffected.
Bitso will not make BCC balances available. If you are interested in keeping the funds in the new BCC chain, you will need to withdraw your BTCs before July 31st at 8PM.

All of them saying that they won't support the coin BTC Cash.   So yeah I don't anyone should worry about the split, the BTC will still be BTC and this new BTC cash will be just added to the long list of Altcoins Smiley.  That is of course my opinion after reading up some info from different sources.  And yes i think it's the best idea for everyone to pool their BTC into their cold storages for now.  Smiley

If anyone wants me to hold their payouts - they can request it (but send an email from your pool account email address to the address you get pool messages from)
However, the held payouts will sit in your dust fund until I do the dust processing code, some time in the future, in a galaxy far far away.

Also, tell me ASAP, coz once I've created the payout for any block, which is before it matures, I'd have to redo the payout from scratch to change anything, and of course once it's matured, the transaction is out on the bitcoin network, so I certainly wont be trying to double spend it, to change it.

It's not an on, off, on, off, on, off thing I will be doing, just a once off thing now you can request over the next few days, then later request it back on again.

Edit: OK added a link to here, on the web site also.

Just spit-balling here...instead of holding individual payouts by request, why not simply hold off on pushing the txn's of any blocks we hit on the 30th Through 1st to the pool?  Once the forks (if any) are resolved, push the txn's to the pool for our next block in line.  It should only be 3-6 blocks to deal with Smiley

I like that idea but it is kano's pool.

Not mine.

I will never have a pool as code writing is not my skill set.
Yeah but I have no idea who uses what random web wallets/exchanges and what silly rules some of them will come up with.
We'll be mining on the mainnet and if some of them decide to switch to some other coin there's nothing I can do about that.

Exchanges and wallets do strange things ... like blockchain.info saying our payouts are too big ... or bitpay regularly tells me my transactions pay too small a fee even though they are often confirmed in the next block ... some like to come up with their own random crap rules that you can just ignore Tongue

The reason for the "Hold Option" is if you are using some wallet or exchange that does something completely stupid, you can wait and see what they do for a few days before you decide to either change your payout address and re-enable it, or leave it where it's already going and re-enable it.

Personally I think there should be no problems, but the option is there for anyone (unnecessarily?) concerned about their BTC Smiley

Though if you were on some pool that used the block's coinbase transaction to payout, you'd have no choice Cheesy

It's still a few days away, and to be blunt, I'm not really sure what the concern actually is.
Pretty much all the mining hash rate is using the equivalent of core's 0.14.2, so if someone decides to fork off some alt-coin with a few PHs or even 100 PHs vs the network's 6,200PHs - that's like stupidly insignificant and not even worth worrying about.

I guess just make sure you aren't associated with any wallet or exchange doing something stupid Smiley

...

I may hold back a few payouts around/before 1-aug and send them a day or two later, but not for lots of days, maybe one or two days at the most.
I'll decide on the 29th and let everyone know then.

Edit: web link now points to this post Smiley

Coinbase claims that it will stop accepting any deposit. I wonder what will happen to the deposit from Kanopool.
It seems that BTC.com is an option if Coinbase stops service temporarily.
Thanks!
Just have your revenue to go your Core wallet instead for the time being. Don't use an exchange, perhaps, until things settle out for you.

Could someone please remind me what was the name of that cold wallet where you posses the your private keys that could be setup on an old android phone?  Thanks! Smiley

Electrum, paired with Ledger Wallet should be able to do this.

Cool! So I could actually install an Electrum app wallet on my android and it could somehow be pared with my Ledger USB wallet?  Huh

Master Kano I have a question.  From what I've read on the internet if 80% of the miners do the BIP91 switch like you did then the coin will not split in two, is that true?  And if it is then how can we know what percentage of miners have done that switch already?  Thanks! Smiley
It's over 99% already.

So as long as yaw coins are not with someone who rejects bit-1 blocks, or yaw running a bit-1 valid wallet, yaw all good ... for the next 3 months Smiley

I see!  And another question.... is Ledger wallet a good option for storing them for now or not?  Thank you!  Smiley

I think it's safe to keep BTC in Coinbase based on what they are going to do https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/2844217-uahf-uasf-faq
But a big risk at least in short term is the fluctuation of BTC price. It seems that Coinbase has no plan to support UAHF. Neither other trading platform. Will the price for 2 types of BTC different?

It might be a dumb question - will the BTC mined in Kanopool be just UASF?

Coinbase sent out an e-mail today on this...explained their strategy/tactic, and it's not bad, methinks. Same as CEX.IO.

However...the only safe place IMHO is in my Core wallet that's triple-redundant backed up.  Grin

Yes, same thing that I was wondering about is that if there will be 2 different coins and we will posses both does that mean that we'll double the money? Or the price for the 2 be different? Or how does it work I really don't understand!  Huh

That is what I'm worried about more than anything is that what will happen with the BTC and if it's better to sell it before the fork or to keep Huh

Thanks!

Windows requires an update to run more than 5 gpus.

Linux/Ubuntu/SimpleMiningOS can do more than 5 natively.  You shouldn't need any help running 6 cards with this OS.

Yes I've already got everything started and it recognizes 6 cards no problem now! Thanks! Smiley Although I still haven't figured out how to fill in the pool address, wallet and rig name because as soon as it starts to mine after my modifications on ethermine pool it says share rejected retry in 20 seconds and if I leave it on default on dwarf and just add my wallet address at the bottom when I go to dwarf website it says no worker found. Sad  so I'm still waiting for someone to help me on setting this up correctly. Smiley
