3421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador has become the first country to make #Bitcoin legal tender! on: January 18, 2022, 06:20:12 PM
Question - why should news like this be in El Salvador's thread?
I did not just make the post, the quote below make me

what elsavador has done will be a trigger for other developing countries to also dare to innovate like they did.

Incorrectly, two deaths have been confirmed so far.
I posted yesterday and your news you post was published today, what I read before in the early hour of yesterday or two days ago was that no death was recorded. I would have more appreciate this if you said two deaths are now recorded rather than saying someone is wrong but your post is good though.

3422  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Daily Show host Michael Kosta claiming that "NFTs are scams" on: January 18, 2022, 04:33:16 PM
IMO, someone buys an NFT because he likes the art the seller provides and maybe have higher value when he have portfolio of this NFTs, even meme NFT are have an art for people who like memes, nothing wrong with that. Now, we can find many NFTs, as well as photographic NFTs that can be used as illustrations for publications and other commercial use. With this, it is very far from the point of view that buying NFT is just to give up money in a scam. However, they buy because they are needed based on their personal needs.
NFTs are not scam but very risky. Only what I can do it to create an NFT and look for buyer. I can not buy NFT because I know the hype can be cool on a way I will lose.

If pump and dump are regarded as scam, the losses it bring can be what NFT will bring to some people. Some people have earned a lot of money from NFT, this is the one I heard about recently

https://cointelegraph.com/news/22-year-old-indonesian-boy-makes-1m-by-selling-nft-selfies-on-opensea

But what makes the buyer think the NFTs of the Indonesia student picture will increase price, this can later be a loss for the buyer.

I am not saying NFT is a scam but it is risky and should be treated like that.
3423  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Daily Show host Michael Kosta claiming that "NFTs are scams" on: January 18, 2022, 02:48:59 PM
And yet nobody talks about the real scams that go on in the cryptoverse every single day, they prefer to bullshit about new crypto tech. Kinda reminds me of all those Bitcoin obituaries to be honest.
It is unbelievable DeFi was not mentioned. Over $10 billion DeFi scam in 2021 and $12 losses in total.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/19/over-10-billion-lost-to-defi-scams-and-thefts-in-2021.html
Quote
Overall losses caused by DeFi exploits have totaled $12 billion so far in 2021, according to a report from Elliptic.
Fraud and theft accounted for $10.5 billion of that sum — a sevenfold increase from last year.

There are still more scam than DeFi but DeFi is the most that scammers used to scam people.

What about donation scam too, it was used by many scammers.
3424  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin wallet on phones on: January 18, 2022, 09:17:39 AM
The core Android OS indeed open source, but almost every phone you can buy comes with a bunch of non-open source unremovable junk such as Google Chrome and other Google spyware installed on top, which kind of defeats the purpose. There are alternative open source OSs such as GrapheneOS you can install on Android devices to remove such bloatware.
Thank you for this, is there any guide for help I can use to install it? I have not heard before that other OS can be installed on Android but hopefully I can be able to convert back to Android if anything happen and I want to convert back?

I think OP should get their facts right before making spurious assertions and then refusing to accept corrections. I don't see how what I pointed out here should be frowned at or what others did too as I see you also addressed other users as having missed your point. Get your facts right, and where you didn't; accept correction and move on.
This is a discussion forum, do not take anything I say inappropriate or personal, I am trying to make a good discussion. What I am saying is that it will be easy to brute force short characters that people use for password to access their mobile phones, in reality people use short password for phone access. This is the question I am asking. To have just little amount of bitcoin on the mobile wallet for transactions and the remaining bitcoin will be on paper wallet. That is it possible to brute force the phone password using a tool, that is it possible. Try and get me correctly.
3425  Economy / Economics / Re: US inflation jumped 7% in December as prices rise at rates unseen in decades on: January 18, 2022, 07:44:34 AM
Inflation is just the beginning.  Not sure if bitcoin is going to be the solution or not, but I'm hoping there is a solution, period.
Bitcoiners can be bear than bull this year, nobody know if this year will be bullish but bitcoin price prediction in a short time guess can be inaccurate and if there are more bears this year, the price of bitcoin may fall to or below $30000. We have seen how bitcoin price can be disappointing sometimes, this makes short term guess not to be accurate even if correct. It is good to have long term prediction which will be profitable because bitcoin price will still surpass $69000.

Now, more people are going to look for ways to combat inflation that's outside the fiat system, in my opinion, this is probably high time that we would see more people in the US buy bitcoin in hopes that it might hedge themselves from the inflation that only steadily grows by year. I have one question though, will a deflation help US? Because 7% is pretty high for an annual inflation which should be around 2% or less.
Bitcoin will help not for people that hold bitcoin for short time but people that keep their bitcoin for long will make profit from it. Some people will buy other ones like Gold too.

Deflation has disadvantages too, countries prefer to go for inflation because of some reasons, they do not like to go for deflation. But if a country will want to go for deflation, this should because they are producing more products in the country than they import or need from another country. Some countries can later have increase work force and production but they still have inflation because government can not do without inflation, only that the inflation will be lessen.
3426  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin wallet on phones on: January 18, 2022, 06:00:15 AM
If the person can not afford hardware wallet or because he just want to store bitcoin for years, experts will advice the person to read about paper wallet very well and use it.

Some people will want to be spending bitcoin frequently and they can not afford hardware wallet, paper wallet can not be used for convenience. The person will be advised to use online wallet. Experts will recommend desktop wallet for the person like electrum but only small amount will be said to have if the person is using desktop wallet.

Some people will want to use bitcoin and be using it for transactions very well, the person do not have hardware wallet and computer, the person will use mobile wallet because he has phones, everyone has phone.

I have noticed people do not recommend wallets on phone, but in reality, some people do not have money to buy hardware wallet and do not have computer but having it in mind to buy it later when they have money.

Let us say the person want to use phone temporary and he is using it for small amount but the remaining amount is on his paper wallet. Let us aay the phone is stolen, can the person that stole it be able to steal his bitcoin? The phone have password.

Many refer to Bitcoin as digital gold. If that is the case, start treating it as such. If you had a gold bar, or 100 gold coins, would you carry them with you everywhere you go? Why do you do that with your Bitcoin? If you have $5.000 somewhere in your home, do you stuff it all in your pockets every time you leave your house? Then why would you do that with crypto?

It's dangerous to store your private keys/seeds on devices you use for everyday tasks. It doesn't matter if we are talking about computers or mobile phones. Those two worlds should be as separate as possible. If you don't want to use airgapped computers or paper wallets, at least get a good hardware wallet. With everything else, you are just using something with an increased possibility of things going wrong.
I have mentioned all these before on the topic, check the bolded parts that I quoted above. Assuming, you do not have a hardware wallet, you can still use a paper wallet and computer together, your main coins will be on the paper wallet, but the computer is just for little amount of coins for daily transactions for convenience. If you do not have a computer, the you can use wallet on phone for this but which is more discouraged than using a computer. I have mentioned all these before that if the person do not hardware wallet an hardware wallet, the cheapest choice that can provide the security is a paper wallet. Try and read the topic very well. All I am just asking is if it is possible to brute force the password on phone.

As a small experiment, I would suggest everyone takes out their phone right now and go to the "permissions" section of their settings. It's usually under Settings -> Apps or Settings -> Privacy. Just look at how many apps have access to your keyboard, your storage, your screen, your camera, your location, etc. Maybe you've downloaded and verified a reputable open source wallet like Electrum. Good start. Are all your other apps open source and verified as well? Didn't think so.
Even very own mobile operating system is a junk collecting personal information, behavior, movement and just about anything you can think of, so I would consider using degoogled phone or at least remove anything related with google.
Reset you phone and instead of Google Store use something like F-Droid or Aurora Store, uninstall apps that are not open source, install some good adblocker and Tor browser.
If you can't cope with this than use separate phone and use it only for Bitcoin crypto wallet like Electrum or Blue wallet, not connecting it to anything else.
The two common phones operating system are Android which is the google you are referring to, Android still claim their OS to be open source, I do not know but it is what I have found all over the internet, is that true? Is Android OS open source?  I am surprised you only mentioned google, but iOS is close source. iOS is one of the operating system that should not also be used. They are both the big brands in the market. I do not mean Android is recommended, they prefer ads than security and I am not tech to know how good it is but I hate Android and Google ads.

Wrong assertion. Not everyone has a phone in reality. Perhaps, you meant just this forum? Even at that, it's still debatable.
This can be off-topic but I think I have to reply to it. I did not mean everyone has phone, I do not know much about English, I would have given you the right figure of speech this belong to. The sentence does not mean everyone is using phone, I used it to mean that people use phone that other devices now, if someone just know about bitcoin, he may not have enough money for hardware wallet and computer, therefore not having option than to use paper wallet and mobile phone.

That's not true. You can increase the strength of your password on your phone. The only reason people like to choose short passwords is for ease of assessment when they want to unlock their phones.
This is what I have found out among people, they are using 4 to 5  numbers or letters. You can increase it? Can you compare numbers, letters and other characters on bitcoin private key to the password that you use to access your phone? This second statement makes me to be perfectly right.

May be you will be given 1 merit but your posts are on altcoin board, they are about bounting hunting. When you started to post on this forum, you post 3 in beginners and help and these are two from your posts

Paper wallet is simply known as a digital wallet, where the developer make it easier to all users, for example Ethereum wallet (ETH) address are one of the simple wallet address you can create through metamask platform and is well secure with private key to every users, and it can bridge across the other smart chain Network.

Trading is a function of buying and selling decision taken base on your analysis of a particular trade you want to trade on.

There is always time, if you want merit, start to work on the quality of your posts because your account is still more of bounty hunting and the ones posted on beginners and help is not fascinating.
3428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador has become the first country to make #Bitcoin legal tender! on: January 17, 2022, 05:39:53 PM
what elsavador has done will be a trigger for other developing countries to also dare to innovate like they did. I agree with you that it is necessary to appreciate what elsavador has done with the courage that has been done, because the step of adopting bitcoin certainly requires courage that is not only based on trends but there is another bigger goal, progress for the country. and the people.
The countries that have currencies regulated by their government may still be thinking to solely depend on their local currency, but unlike El Salvador that only spend US dollars before that does not depend on a currencies regulated by El Salvadorian government.

There is a country called kingdom if Toga that have small population that wants to start using bitcoin, their currency called paʻanga is not also regulated by their government.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongan_pa%CA%BBanga

Quote
The paʻanga is the currency of Tonga. It is controlled by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (Pangikē Pule Fakafonua ʻo Tonga) in Nukuʻalofa. The paʻanga is not convertible and is pegged to a basket of currencies comprising the Australian, New Zealand, and United States dollars and the Japanese yen.

Their former MP has tweeted how this will be possible and will be done this year, I created a thread about it but no much attention and response from people, but very possible Kingdom of Tonga with a small population of 100000 citizens can also adopt bitcoin very soon.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5381247.msg58980148#msg58980148

Even Tonga is presently accepting donations in bitcoin because of the volcanic eruption and tsunami that is occuring in the country recently. No death is yet recorded. Very possible the country is the next that will accept bitcoin as a legal tender.

3429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin payments decline as other cryptocurrencies grow on: January 17, 2022, 01:38:55 PM
Bitcoiners avoid BitPay because of unreasonable requirements for KYC.
I wrote about it because of the news and because it can slightly indicate how people are using altcoins with low fee and stable coins for making transaction when exchanges and custodial wallets are confusing people that bitcoin fee is high but not high like they said.

I use electrum, I have used it to buy, sell, shop online. What else do I need? I know payment processors can help  stores like online stores and many like that, that is why they use it, but as for me for now, I am good with electrum.

And there's always LN for faster and cheaper payments.
I do not need it for now because the onchain fee is low, I can just remain some little amount on it if I see people that are interested to use it for payment, but I will need it more during when the fee is high, but bitcoin fee is still low for now.

Don't write "$0.0005" bitcoin, that doesn't make sense.
It was a mistake, I have corrected it. Thanks.
3430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin payments decline as other cryptocurrencies grow on: January 17, 2022, 11:11:11 AM
According to the news, it is said that bitcoin payment of users that use BitPay has declined from 92% in 2020 to 65% in 2021.

https://wealthybot.io/bitcoin-payments-decline-as-other-cryptocurrencies-grow/

Quote
According to BitPay, Bitcoin’s (BTC) usage at businesses that use its payment system fell last year to about 65% of processed transactions, down from 92% in 2020. Along with this change, Ether (ETH) represented 15% of all transactions, whereas other currencies such as Litecoin (LTC) and Dash have increased their portion.

Businesses have started using stablecoins more frequently for cross-border payments since November when crypto values had been depreciating.

Hope this will not affect bitcoin adoption if people that are using it for payment is decreasing?

On the other side, I am thinking bitcoin is not just a coin that can be used for payment, it can be used for asset too.

And now that bitcoin fee is that high, what I noticed is that bitcoin exchange fee is higher than actual bitcoin fee, this make people to think it is high. Even less than $1 I used to make the last bitcoin transaction recently but if exchanges are charging 0.0005 bitcoin to a high amount over 0.0012 bitcoin which is $20 and above. They are misleading people to pay high fee when it is not.

People that are using bitcoin now are using exchanges and centralized wallets that charge high fee in a way it will also discourage some people to move the coin to a private key wallet.

The reason for the high fee is because of centralized sites like centralized wallets and exchanges. To use low fee, you can use noncustododial wallet.

Speaking of the alleged disappointing data for 2021 (I wasn't disappointed, anyway), one could see that the obvious reason was the Merit system which has tremendously helped in curbing account farming to an extent.
Why are you disappointed with 2021? What about 2020. A total of 474226 users were registered in 2021, this is still good, the number is more than double of 2020.
3434  Other / Archival / Re: Registration statistics (2021 & All Years) on: January 17, 2022, 06:31:57 AM
What was the reason for having such a huge amount of registration in 2018?

The reason was the bounty. A huge number of newcomers rushed to the forum for what they thought was easy money. Many thought that the bounty theme would be permanent. Huge farms were created. In 2018, there was also a boom in altcoin-related shitposting.
From your chart, I noticed the huge registration should be said to be in 2018 as it was in the upward direction, this will be because of what you said, the hype of altcoins is one of the reasons but not the only reason.

If merit has not be introduced on this forum by then, this will be the third reason there was huge registration because even for both signature campaign and bounties, many people will farm accounts, just a single person can have up to 5 to 10 accounts. But now the merit that has been introduced in 2018 is another contributing factor to the declining of people that are registering as a result of reduction of ghost users.
3435  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Anyone ever try a SecuX hardware wallet. on: January 16, 2022, 08:15:40 AM
Some hardware wallets started in the past to be using USB code for making transaction but malware can flow through USB. Later were hardware devices that can use Bluetooth for transaction, malware can flow through Bluetooth. These malware can work as a clipboard malware than can change receivers or senders address to another address belonging to an hacker.

This should be the reason modern hardware wallets should move to a more secure ones that use QR code which is still the safest among them. I do not know if malware can be transmitted through QR code but it is still the safest, it is safer than USB and Bluetooth.

If SecuX is not having a means I can use QR code for signing transaction, I can still use it but which is what I am expecting from modern hardware wallets. QR code create another method of airgap between hardware wallet and the software that is used for it which is not a direct plug in.

What can not make me to use this device is that it is close source, I can never use a close source wallet, it is dangerous than anything else, it is better to use open source wallets.
3436  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin wallet on phones on: January 15, 2022, 06:43:12 PM
Android and IOS controlled the device they produce and they are very centralized with the App you upload on their store, it undergoes series of test before they publicly published for the masses, you see the stress and that's why developers don't waste time on Android and IOS due to their centralized nature.
They are centralized, I am using Android, may be this what I want to say is possible on iOS too. They are centralized but there are fake apps on playstore, I have seen fake electrum and some other fake android wallets before on playstore. But there are ways you can easily know original apps on playstore but someone that is new may make mistake.

For your security, avoid paper wallet, this is 2022.
I use electrum with tor enabled, I change it also from one country to another for each connection. If I want to connect and make another transaction or accessing the wallet for whatever reason, I change the country again. Even if I want to change to another wallet, I change the country again. What is most important is the way you handle the wallet, I am good with electrum.

First, app stores are filled with fake and malicious apps. Even if you find the "right" wallet, most are closed source.
I use electrum and I do not download it from playstore, I download it from electrum.org which is the official site. There are ways to know original apps on google but what is I do not like is that most apps nowadays are close source.

One of bad practice people usually do is they do multiple things on a same phone.

- Install bitcoin or crypto wallet
- Install exchange applications
- Install 2FA application
- Log in email which they use to create account on exchange

So what will happen if they lose that phone by any reason? They will lose their coins because bad people who get that phone, will have full access to their account, email, 2FA, etc.
I can not have my 2fa app on the phone I use for wallet or exchange and for other secure connections, that is foolishness, it has to be on different device. But this is a common mistake from people that are using wallets and exchanges now.

If asked the best wallet to use that is secure, experts will advice people to use hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger Nano. But not everyone can afford it, some people will prefer to use other wallet.

If the person can not afford hardware wallet or because he just want to store bitcoin for years, experts will advice the person to read about paper wallet very well and use it.

Is there a way the password can be bypassed to access the wallet. Phone password are not long, is it possible for the pilferer to hack the phone password to have access to the phone.

Or is it just because of online safety that experts are telling others people not to use phones for wallet? I know some dangers why we should not use mobile wallet but I want to gain more knowledge about this. And what I want to gain is about if a pilferer stole a password phone, how can the pilferer access the contents in the phone which can cause wallet hack and bitcoin to be stolen.

in which forum can I get merit help?
Do you want to buy merit? You can not buy merit, there is no forum that can help unless you help yourself. Check quality posts and see how they are and use it to be making quality posts. There is a standard for merited posts on this forum, follow the standard.

is there anyone here who wants to help me?
Merit source can help you, this is their work if your posts are quality

You can post your good posts here in the below link if they are having quality

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5093271.0

You can have a genuine interest in the off:topic and altcoins section, but you should understand that your chances of getting nerited is greatly reduced as users rarely give out merits there cause majority of the posts are shitposts.
That offtopic board is full of low quality posters. I still manage to post in altcoin board, what I noticed is that most merit sources are bitcoin enthusiasts, most of them do not visit altcoin boards.
3439  Other / Off-topic / Re: KYC is the biggest scam on internet on: January 15, 2022, 06:37:57 AM
I agree because it is normal for citizens to have National ID, Drivers License and Voters Card. There are other ID cards that someone will have like the ones given where the person is working or when doing exam that require ID card. This does not mean the person is not having privacy.

Assuming I have all those ID cards, that does not mean I will register on an exchange that requires verification, that does not mean I can not sell bitcoin without getting verified. There are ways I can help myself and have the privacy I want.

There are times privacy is no possible, like when you want to be using online stores like Amazon or others stores to be ordering some items, if they do not know you and your address, how will the online store deliver what you ordered for? It will not be possible.

There is a part of me that required privacy and there is a part of me that does not require privacy. Because I have all the ID cards does not mean I am not having privacy when I am using cryptocurrencies.
3440  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Tether is centralized, is it worth holding on: January 14, 2022, 07:14:02 PM
It's common knowledge now that USDT is centralized. Worth holding? No. I only use it for short them trades. Fiat is no better but I would rather have it because I'd be dealing directly with my local bank than some private company (Tether) registered in another country
Fiat is better, not that you are only dealing with your bank, you are also dealing with your central bank of your country, unlike tether.

As a normal user, I don't expect your account to be frozen, but they can.
I am thinking of a way I am using a private key wallet but unknowingly make a deal with a scam that just sent USDT to me in a way tether company will see me who is innocent as the criminal and freeze my coin.

- USDC: It is centralized but better than Tether and is well listed in many exchanges.
 - DAI: Central currency but cannot be frozen and listed in some exchanges.
 - BUSD: many be better than Tether ?!
I will prefer to hold Dai with the good research I have done about the coin. I do not know why I still see BUSD suspicious but I may not be right.
