3441  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Halving Multiple - (Research) on: June 15, 2022, 03:51:41 PM
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I've stopped reading after the "fancy formula".
* You should make the formula clear and exact, not fancy
* You should use established operators. For now | means OR and the horizontal line is division. If both mean division, then the formula is worthless.
* You could write something like UsdPriceAt(h2), to make users understand you're not dividing dates.
* Maybe an example won't hurt
* Maybe you'd explain how does this apply for third, and fifth, and sixth halving...
3442  Other / Meta / Re: Moderators deleted my two page post ! on: June 15, 2022, 12:30:25 PM
So here's another case of "shoot first, ask questions later" My two page post called " Is trading volume an important metric? " Just got deleted by moderators. It had about 15 replies, most of which were highly informative. But just about 2 hours ago, I posted something the moderators didn't like, and boom ! whole thread is gone. WTF !! What is this ? No freedom of speech ? So this is pretty much another Reddit ? Okay.
And FYI, the offending comment was about an Altcoin that had gone several million percent in one day, and no, it's not me trying to pump a new scam coin or anything, this really did happen, I took screenshots and have proof. I won't name that project because the moderators really pissed me off here, so now you go and find what this project's name is.

So Moderators:

Next time something sounds unbelievable make sure you check your sources first, and don't rush to conclusions and delete the thread because it might just be true, as in this case.

Next time you open you mouth you make sure you know what you're talking about.
Your topic is not removed. Your topic was probably related to altcoins, since I can see it under Altcoin Discussions. Probably it was moved there.
This is your topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5402578.0
3443  Economy / Reputation / Re: [FLAG] against Koil (u=3442072) abuse and harassment by PM on: June 15, 2022, 09:25:26 AM
but these unsolicited messages dropping into my mailbox

I've blocked him from messaging after the first one I've received. I want to emphasize that it's the only used from the entire forum I've blocked from private messages.
Thick skin or not, it's not OK to spam with dumb messages full of offensive words.
So I do understand your point and I've supported the flag.
3444  Other / Archival / Re: What do you expect from bitcoin in the second half of 2022? on: June 15, 2022, 07:27:13 AM
Now there is an active phase of washing out even the strongest hands.

We hoped that crypto winter will not come this time, but it came. Of course strong hands are also affected. Maybe some did their math and expect 7x fall like in the previous cycle. Then they can sell now 1 BTC and buy 2 BTC in the near future (unless the reality won't go by their math  Cheesy ).

However, I don't think I've seen fear index so low. We're at 7 today.
3445  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Using my ledger Wallet fine on electrum-4.1.5-portable. Do I need newer version? on: June 15, 2022, 07:21:41 AM
The point is, that message shouldn't be available in "Use hardware device option".

It's on the view where you select whether you use HW or not (so HW is not selected yet). In my previous post I've linked a page with the image.
You do have a valid point though: hardware wallet should have its own path starting with page 1, not from (this) page 2.
And OP said that he got error (an error he didn't detail) when he selected the HW radio button and pressed next. At least that's how I've understood.

However, it doesn't matter much. His problem is solved, which is very good.
3446  Other / Meta / Re: Bump locked topic, should this be allowed? on: June 15, 2022, 07:16:03 AM
Maybe the reputation topics should not be locked at all.
And I also find the demoting of the ranking of locked topics a very good idea; nice one @examplens!

However, for now I've added that user to my ignore list. I'd expect that sooner or later he'll get tired/lose interest in spamming the reputation board.
3447  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bonus Abuse: Who is to Blame? on: June 15, 2022, 07:06:42 AM
I ask again who is to blame for the increase in bonus abuse, the customers/fraudsters or the online gambling operators?

Asking if a scammer is to blame is... a non question imho. Of course that the scammers are to blame.

Now let's see about the online casinos. Here it's a bit more complicated.
They have to offer bonuses and promotions to stay in sync with the competition. Else they can easily rush into oblivion.
But...
1. Most of them don't have enough technical knowledge to avoid security holes.
2. Most of them don't have enough budget to heavily test and review the casino software, hence they won't see the holes.
3. Most of them don't have enough personnel in the first year, when more of the withdrawals should be reviewed, when more users may need support too.

So there are significant loses? Sure. But, I don't know the numbers, but some of that loses should have been in the development/test/operational budget and they're not.
Yeah, it's also the fault of the operators.
3448  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cryptos are uncovering our evil sides on: June 15, 2022, 06:57:36 AM
Crypto are making people greedy :

This is just as true like saying that knives have turned people into criminals.

No. You're wrong. Bitcoin is just a tool. Altcoins are... most of them are just noise. And human greed was always there, long before Bitcoin.
3449  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Using my ledger Wallet fine on electrum-4.1.5-portable. Do I need newer version? on: June 15, 2022, 06:44:01 AM
That's because that message will display only if you go to "Wallet with two-factor authentication" instead of "Standard wallet->Use a hardware device".

Reference: github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/electrum/plugins/trustedcoin/trustedcoin.py#L546

Um, I've went on that path myself and you're incorrect.
That same message is also in the normal wizard: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/electrum/base_wizard.py#L208
That same message is visible on the top of the second page of the wizard, see the second image (step 3) from here and I pretty much suspect that this is what OP was referring to.
3450  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-06-14] Tesla could take a big loss on its Bitcoin bets on: June 15, 2022, 06:38:18 AM
I am quite certain that it is more complicated than what it appears to be for public companies similar to Tesla. The unrealized loss will be reflected in their income statement and a public company, they would like this to be positive. This could negatively impact them as a company and on their stock price.

That's clear. The official papers will look bad and they will have to find ways to sugarcoat that in order to keep the investors - big or small - not-too-unhappy, especially as those investors don't know nor care about 4-year cycles, limited supply or technological marvel. But I think that they know that if they sell it's not only the papers looking bad, it'll be the actual reality too.
Also, while the situation may be pretty much similar for all the big investors into bitcoin, the way it's reflected on the quarterly balance may differ and the actions they'll take or not, again, may be different.
That's why, while I think they won't sell, I cannot be sure. And that's why I said it'll be interesting to see what's going to happen next with these companies.
3451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 14, 2022, 04:42:12 PM
I would wait until after the July 16th hardfork and see if they updated their software, because Ledger is slacking right now: https://libera.monerologs.net/monero-dev/20220607
Quote
both previous employees that were responsible for monero either quit or moved to a different position

Many thanks for the info!

I find more worrying the fact Ledger seems to start making a habit of not delivering in time simply to let Monero devs do the work (and probably not pay for the work done).
If new Monero app for Ledger will exist even 3 months late, I won't be that much upset.

Another thing: how about the tool that supposedly converts Ledger 24-word seed to Monero 25-word seed? Is it good/working? (I may try it, although I'm not that good with Linux).

The background is that for some personal reasons I'd want to do the move before July 10th, hence the timing is awful.  Cry
3452  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-06-14] Tesla could take a big loss on its Bitcoin bets on: June 14, 2022, 02:00:05 PM
As long as TSLA doesn't sell, it's only unrealized loss. That has a chance to become profit again after some more years.
However, it's interesting to see how will the institutional investors behave now, as "crypto winter" seems to be here.
Since they didn't sell for profit at close-to-ATH levels, I don't expect them to panic-sell now, but "never say never", I know...
3453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Not a Hedge Against Inflation?? on: June 14, 2022, 12:49:06 PM
Bitcoin was in some aspect created to act as a hedge against inflation.

You've got it wrong, sorry. Bitcoin was created in order that you and me can make transactions easily without needing to trust + use Visa or the banks to validate that.

However it seems with FIAT going down, so is more of Bitcoin and other cryptos.

While this indeed happens now, it's not a relation, it's a coincidence.
Bitcoin price tends to go down after a couple of months after the ATH. Then, after some years, new, higher ATH came. It has already happened a couple of times.

Bitcoin was supposed to be here for our survival. Now it is becoming just a digital number on a computer screen that never had any value all along.

What am I missing here?

You have thought that Bitcoin is a get rich scheme. You thought that Bitcoin price only goes up. You.. didn't read enough before investing into bitcoin.
You could start by reading about Bitcoin's 4 years cycles. Ah, and Bitcoin white paper: it's short and not too technical, it may give you a better view what was Bitcoin invented/created for.
3454  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Several reasons explaining the Crypto Price Crash (without BS) on: June 14, 2022, 11:53:17 AM
2013 ATH - 2014 DISCOUNT $1.2k-$300

Iirc it went even under 250$ (or was it under 200$?)

i wouldnt say its "winter" id say we are in the spring sales period where everyone can get old stock cheap

Indeed:

one's crypto winter is other's summer sales
3455  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Tulip Mania 2.0 on: June 14, 2022, 09:57:52 AM
When the tulip bubble popped it went to $0 pretty quick. Experts had been warning this crypto stuff was all hype / BS. I don't see $0 but I see $1000 or so in a few more months. Start investing again when that happens.

You compared apples with oranges and came with a conclusion that doesn't really apply neither to apples, nor to oranges.
Will Bitcoin price drop? Maybe. But DCA is better than waiting a price mark, especially if it's so extremely low as 1000$, because the lower it is, the lower the chance to happen to touch that value.
Will "this crypto stuff" drop to zero? Most of the altcoins, tokens and "crypto stuff" probably will. But most of those are just noise around Bitcoin...
3456  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If you do this, stop it! on: June 14, 2022, 09:53:08 AM
note. crypto or trading has nothing to do with this issue.

That's correct.
I wonder if OP would work in an office or factory or whatever, maybe even 2 jobs, hence busy all day, and his/her relatives and friends would call him/her relentlessly on his/her smartphone.... what would (s)he do?  Wink
3457  Economy / Gambling / Re: Places where you can bet 50 BTC on 50/50 odds? on: June 14, 2022, 08:46:05 AM
1. Let's get real, the amount is way too big for these pretty small/new casinos.
2. There are no 50/50 odds, there's always a (small) cut for "the bank".

Betting 50BTC sounds more like despair than sadness/need of adrenaline, hence I don't think that the fact this kind of bets are disallowed is such a "missing feature"...
3458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Binance BTC Withdrawal getting stuck - what's the best thing to do? on: June 14, 2022, 08:35:57 AM
Bitcoin without proper use (e.g. Binance) - would be a trouble.

I think that putting the "this is the use of Bitcoin" on Binance is very dangerous.
There are plenty of bitcoin exchanges, Binance is, by far, one of the very many. And if Binance falls, FTX is preparing for more than a year now to take over the job.

And Bitcoin role is not to be the main coin in centralized exchanges, no. I find one of Bitcoin's main use cases to be used as a coin, in the way it's used in El Salvador or on this very forum. I find one of Bitcoin's main use cases to be exchanged in a decentralized manner without the need to trust a third party. And, although it should diminish in time, one important use case of Bitcoin, whether we like it or not, is as investment or store of value. None of these need Binance, actually.
3459  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Using my ledger Wallet fine on electrum-4.1.5-portable. Do I need newer version? on: June 14, 2022, 08:11:24 AM
For the question it the topic title: I would advise you use the latest Electrum, since it fixes a vulnerability.
I do use the portable version because I don't like to install things on my Windows, so imho portable is just as good as the installed one.
I would start with a new copy of the portable Electrum, copied maybe on disk D into a new folder, so there are no rights issues, look at the tutorial linked by @Charles-Tim as first answer to verify your Electrum, and when you create the new wallet make sure it creates it in a subfolder of that folder on D you just made.

Then, if you still get errors, you can give us more details, like what is the error you get.

Make sure your USB drivers are up to date.

I would add that it won't hurt if OP makes sure he also has the latest Bitcoin App on his Ledger (maybe his current one is old?)
3460  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Several reasons explaining the Crypto Price Crash (without BS) on: June 14, 2022, 07:45:13 AM
you would find dozens of articles full of BS explaining to you nothing, so let's keep it short and sweet

I just love the title of this post! Grin Really, I do!
It may worth to be added to the list:
* we're in that part of the 4-years cycle which is usually called crypto winter
* overall fear/uncertainty on all financial markets (stocks also dropping afaik)
