3483  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: April 22, 2013, 02:27:37 PM
i have an account in india. it pays 9% on a 1 year deposit

Is the account only in INR or does it also pay 9% for other currencies? INR loses in value a lot (inflation rate is 6% (WPI) to 11% (CPI) and the EER is in the 80s.
3484  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Building the next generation FAST CRYPTO CURRENCY MINING MACHINE on: April 21, 2013, 08:49:59 PM

Experience.  "Bitcoin transactions are instant - the confirmations aren't. It usually takes less than an hour for the first confirmation."  There is no such thing as a "low value" transaction... Milk is NOT free and if buyers use bitcoin you are asking the merchant to risk being robbed... else hold his customer for an hour.

It will be long before we can expect people to use Bitcoin for groceries, but setting this aside, given precautions I mentioned few posts above the risk becomes largely mitigated and acceptable for low-value transactions (I can be struck by a lightning any time I am outside, does that mean I shouldn't leave my room?)

Are you sure it's worth it?
It's CERTAINLY worth having a discussion, yes.

I wasn't clear enough, discussion, sure, but do you really believe it's worth to design & build an ASIC for scrypt in the foreseeable future?

We are seeking engineers and mathematics, coders and builders.

only those with the best economies of scale will remain in business with profit margins decreasing.
As a "rich American" I find this logic flawed.  People who cannot (or will not) afford ASICs will STILL want to mine.  Crypto Currency is about MASS adoption.  If only Vlad is mining then everyone else will migrate elsewhere.

Gold is used widely in the world and people still use it despite the fact that only a few can afford to mine it themselves (nothing stops people from buying it). Bitcoin will someday (hopefully) become widely used like paypal but already now people who use Bitcoin actually buy it (or offer goods/services for BTC) because not everyone wants to bother/can afford/has time/is technically knowledgeable enough with setting up a mining operation (like with gold). Bitcoin, like gold, is used due to its advantages over fiat, not because ''it's a money-making machine''. The ''money'' part is only there to secure the network, Bitcoin is about financial independence from the state and middlemen.
3485  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Building the next generation FAST CRYPTO CURRENCY MINING MACHINE on: April 21, 2013, 08:14:20 PM
It should take 10 minutes with a transaction fee

Not sure where you are from but 10 minutes waiting at a cash register is unacceptable in American commerce.  So if you are third in line it will take 1/2 hour to buy milk.

Not sure where you are from but reading doesn't hurt Wink For low-value transactions no waiting is necessary.

So I'd like to begin a discussion about building a device that solves the scrypt proof of work.  And so we need to start with a rudminetary understanding. Here it is in all it's wikipedia glory

Are you sure it's worth it? I like scrypt but it is still relatively new and I wouldn't be surprised if someone found a flaw in it that would render it less safe, after all it is as old as Bitcoin (created in 2009) and also created by only 1 guy (although Satoshi did use some other peoples' ideas and consulted them). If the flaw requires a change of an algorithm in Litecoin, all those expensive ASICs will become useless.

It will be a long before it will be worth to invest so much money to design & manufacture an ASIC for scrypt.

We all knew that ASIC's were only printing gold if you were the first one to get one. GPU farms prior to ASICS managed in some fashion to centralize mining. Someone with a thousand cards made far more then someone with ten. But it didn't stop anyone. I don't see how things have changed. The landscape has restarted and we all need to buy ASICs. I surely will, even if it's not the money-printer I was hoping that it would be.

+1
As Bitcoin gained in popularity the barrier for 'an average Joe' became too high already without any ASICs. Until recent price increases a lot of people wouldn't have been able to afford to mine with their electricity costs and often hardware costs (in US GPUs are cheap, especially 2nd hand). Difficulty is growing and when it stabilizes with price, only those with the best economies of scale will remain in business with profit margins decreasing.

3486  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Building the next generation FAST CRYPTO CURRENCY MINING MACHINE on: April 21, 2013, 07:39:41 PM
It should take 10 minutes with a transaction fee that isn't too low and with a few measures* instant 0-confirmation transaction can be relatively safe and used for transactions of, say, less than $1000 (given the resources required to double-spend if appropriate precautions were taken by the merchant, accepting 0-confirmation transaction for low-value goods can be safe).

Denial seems to be the thing nowadays
I pity your hatred of America which is baseless and born of ignorance and jealousy.

Thinking of it more and more, maybe USA is not a police state but a militarized police state.
I live in the real world.  I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado and I am not afraid.  I am proud of the soldiers and their swift action in stopping two madmen.  Every American who lives in that neighborhood welcomed and cheered those soldiers.  If you are not a part of our community you will never understand how good it feels to be a proud American.

All this show of force was unnecessary because one policeman would have been enough to arrest him.
The guy wasn't even found by the police but a random guy found him in his boat.
3488  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Police State? on: April 20, 2013, 03:49:50 PM
It's a clear example of scaling of police resources: If 10.000 cops roamed the streets on a daily basis, most crimes would be solved before lunch. However a permanently sieged society is a dictatorship.

'Crimes' would be solved but I doubt there would be justice. With so much power and influence they would have the monopoly for committing crimes themselves and for fabricating evidence to 'solve the crimes' that are committed by members of society that are not affliated with the police force..

3490  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: April 20, 2013, 10:53:55 AM
As far as I'm aware it is very simple ...
electric watts in ~= thermal watts need to be removed

I think you could substract electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths other than 380-740 nm and sound as these two are also are also as heat are ways that energy is emitted in.

I would be glad if someone more knowledgable confirmed whether I'm right or bullshitting, though.

How many GPUs and in what conditions are you mining with that you need that kind of cooling?
It won't be effectively cooling its maximum load for a month or so, but I expect to cool about 11,214 watts of ASICs and GPUs with this based on my research.
I'm not really sure how accurate this number is because there is very little information on the subject, but I plan on adding rigs/ASICs until it can no longer deal with the heat.  Wink

Are you sure it is going to be worth to run mine the GPUs with the added cost of electricity for cooling them? Have you checked how much do you have to pay for the electricity (+ costs of transmission/distribution + taxes)? It might be OK for now, but expect for the difficulty to increase 5-10x in a year or so if BFL delivers and Avalon continues to deliver.

As it was mentioned few posts back - day trading doesn't differ much from gambling. The market is very unpredictable... but its inefficiencies can offer some guidance and hints on how the price may change.

3495  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: flatten out the bumps on: April 16, 2013, 08:54:29 PM
I don't like your regulatory-intervenionist tendencies.

How will you decide which currency is the most important? If it's due to liquidity USD you are limiting yourself to the US, you might not know it, but Bitcoin is also known and used in Europe and on other continents too (not sure about Antarctica though). Why not change the numbers of coins issued on something more reliable than fiat (precious metals)? How will you decide which exchanges should be taken into consideration? Why them? What if a new exchange with a lot of trading going on pops out? Will you adjust the algorithm to that? Who is to do it? How will you convince others to use the new protocol?

If you want such radical, unsafe and nonsensical changes I suggest you start your own coin.

The real way to flatten out the spikes is to get more people into Bitcoin.

And get them use other exchanges, so that (ideally) no single exchange is a single point of failure, has monopoly on 80% of BTC exchange, and where its deficiencies have an influence on price (laaags)

@malevolent, please follow the guide and report back how much money you made (estimated: $4/month, negative after counting in traffic costs) and how long it took for your AdSense account to be banned.

Why would I do that?  Tongue  If you read my post I think you can see that my impression of BitcoinMillionaire's system is less than favourable.
3497  Economy / Services / Re: Make $100/day on Autopilot at Home?? Now Open For Sales! on: April 15, 2013, 09:59:20 PM
I am the last of the three people who received a free copy to review.

The guide is 2277 words long and has 3 pictures in it. A lot about the guide has been already mentioned so I'll keep it very short.

Although I'm not sure I like the fact that someone send TradeFortress the guide, a lot that has already been said by others and him is unfortunately true (to be honest I didn't expect anything more than greyhattery but I'm trying to remain objective nonetheless).

The guide may work. BitcoinMillionaire is aware that AdSense can ban people and he proposes a solution to this but I am not sure if the end justifies the means, especially given the costs if it is to be done more than once (because I don't see why google wouldn't be against practices outlined in the guide and keep banning the accounts, in the long run only serving valuable content and helping advertisers get actual sales will be profitable but of course it takes much more effort and time).

I think the guide is worth less than 1 BTC. (1 BTC is around $70-150 these days) It doesn't look very professional (but better than his font size 9000 posts on the 1st page) and it could be written in 3h. If I had to pay for it I would be willing to pay $5 provided that I had zero knowledge and familiarity with Internet marketing, AdSense, etc. The product BitcoinMillionaire is offering is real and I'm quite positive he won't run away with your money once you pay. What I am uncertain about is the quality of the product, especially given the steep price.

There is a reason why BitcoinMillionaire would want to sell it to a limited number of people, you can understand it once you read through his guide - this is to limit competition for current and new users (but they already have a lot).

Things to change:

- show better proof of earnings than easily-editable and 4 month old screenshots
- stop looking so 'scammy', e.g. big fonts, too much red colours
- provide a better product, if I were to spend $100 I would expect a detailed few hundred page book not 5 pages

3500  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Gotta love GPU warranties on: April 11, 2013, 01:27:02 PM
Well if they don't specifically exclude overclocking and state normal usage (I think overclocking can be considered normal usage since most of the manufacturers boast about overclocking) then it's their fault.  Basically you paid for accidental damage and you "accidentally" damaged it.

No, most warranties do not cover overclocking, read up if you are not sure. Yes, very often manufacturers ''advertise'' overclocking and provide tools to do so, at the same time exempting themselves from providing warranty for products that result in malfunctioning due to overclocking. Depending on who gives you a warranty (merchant or manufacturer) and who performs the checking on what's wrong with the card it may or may not be found that the card was overclocked (there are ways of finding it out if the overclocking is what resulted in breaking the card).
