3521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New York's push to ban crypto mining on: June 06, 2022, 04:38:11 PM
Are they banning only Bitcoin mining or whole Bitcoins?

It's only the mining.

As if only Bitcoin mining is banned, then it won’t be a big issue I guess.

It's bad because the underlying "reason" is the "Bitcoin uses dirty energy" (proven fake) narrative and, since politics defy logic, this sets up a dangerous precedent.

They can secretly mine and can sell their Bitcoins in the exchanges. The exchanges many times doesn’t ask the source of Bitcoins right?

I guess that the problem is not some small home miners, it's the mining businesses. And they cannot just hide, you know... and relocating is not cheap. But that's the best solution, I guess.

If they have banned the Bitcoins, then it might become a serious issue for the New York’s people.

It was only the mining (this time). And NY has a history of being overly harsh against Bitcoin. Pretty stupid move if you ask me, but they may think that with this crap they somehow protect Wall Street or ... I don't know what are they thinking...
3522  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The Reasons I Trust Binance for my Crypto Storage on: June 06, 2022, 04:31:59 PM

While Binance boasts about its security, about keeping the funds "SAFU" and so on, while they do have a strong marketing and a pretty good history too (afaik they've always reimbursed when there was a problem), I would like to emphasize that they're still a custodian, and not your keys, not your coins.
I will come with even more: just search the forum about the Nigeria users Binance has frozen their funds without warning - most probably because Bitcoin is not legal in Nigeria and Binance may have received an official note about that.

So yeah, all big established exchanges are nice and good... until proven otherwise or until it happens to you. So.. better be wary and don't keep too big funds there.
3523  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Which crypto will going to explore after this bearish market ends? on: June 06, 2022, 04:23:13 PM
The obvious answer is Bitcoin.
However, I will add that lately I see a lot of hype around Monero and its soon-to-start tail emission.
There may be something, there may be nothing at all. I don't know. You better ask in altcoins area more.
3524  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MS Word vulnerability could lead to stealing your bitcoins on: June 06, 2022, 10:01:23 AM
And yes, most of the tools are similar. I didn't get to see yet if Only Office also works there.

Use LibreOffice instead. OpenOffice isn't actively developed.

I do use LibreOffice. I wanted to give Only Office (not OpenOffice) a try since they claim to offer better compatibility with MS Office. I've read about it in this topic and I wan to see if it's indeed good.
(However, using actual MS Office for free in the browser is also an option).

Debian isn't suitable for beginner (those who never use/give up using Linux) anyway. Excluding non-free driver by default with lots of download option (CD, DVD, different DE, etc.) would give beginner hard time.

Agreed.
3525  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Sweep not working (p2wpkh-p2sh prefix) on: June 06, 2022, 09:55:51 AM
I'd get that you were careful and didn't add by mistake some unnecessary spaces there. However, a double check would not hurt.

Also, if nothing else works, I would try to create a completely new Electrum wallet from the private key and send the funds from there. Maybe this direction gives an idea of what you may have been doing wrong at first.
Imho it doesn't matter at all it's a change address.
3526  Economy / Reputation / Re: Meriting Your Alt is no more Merit Abuse? on: June 06, 2022, 09:40:32 AM
Why do you think I created this drama while I already said:
I am not accusing him of merit abuse, and I am not expecting a harsh reply. I want to see how the community react when it varies from person to person.

Well, you did create this topic and have tried to put some sort of "guilty" tag on his back.
So no matter what you claim/declare afterwards, some harm (and drama) is done.

Even more, I find your "innocent" (lol) question rather insulting. You have too much of politician material.
3527  Economy / Economics / Re: Block Report: Bitcoin: Knowledge and Perceptions on: June 06, 2022, 09:30:15 AM
Quote
- Too much price volatility
People don't understand that the volatility even becomes an advantage. Without significant volatility, people can't gain big profits.

Actually you're wrong.
If there would be lower volatility then the small traders will no longer earn so much (may no longer worth it) and the investors will earn steadily (even the faint hearted ones).
If there would be no volatility at all (which is probably not possible because of Bitcoin scarcity) then people would earn from loaning, like they do with fiat now.

So no matter what, people would keep getting profits. Just it will be different people and/or different ways, that's all.
3528  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Need to access Bitcoincore testnet externally on: June 06, 2022, 09:20:55 AM
Maybe you already know, but I want to be sure:
You will probably have to run bitcoind (i.e. the daemon, not the wallet UI).
Also, if what I've read here is correct, you may have to add -testnet as parameter to your calls.
3529  Economy / Reputation / Re: sujonali1819 Cheater Bounty Manager on: June 06, 2022, 08:52:17 AM
...While I would double check all those users with name starting with Alamin... I don't understand what is OP problem.
I mean, I've looked up the first address OP was complaining about and it seems to be in the list:

Am I missing something?
3530  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help and Advice on Running Own Pruned Node on: June 06, 2022, 08:30:06 AM
Using a combination of ledger, Trezor, and collaborative custody multisig. You are correct, “the why” is more important than the how. That’s what I’m battling. Does the benefit outweigh the risks and is it better than what I’m doing now. I don’t know enough to make that decision. I’ve researched the hell out of it and it all sounds so complicated.

As already said, you have no cold storage in your setup. So for now the risk I see is you, no offense: the risk is that you think you know some things and you may not actually know them, hence doing mistakes because of some assumptions you may make. My advice is to read more, much more.
Hardware wallets are not unsafe, but they're not cold storage either. (Cold storage never connects to internet. Ever. Hence it's also not synced, but that's OK.)

Now, about "the why". If you use Electrum, or Ledger Live, for example, these are wallets that connect to servers and exchange information. This means that the owners of the servers can easily see what are your addresses and what funds you have. If some of that ever goes (or ever went) without your VPN, then they'll also correlate with your IP.
Some find this a problem. Some don't. It's up to you. This is the most important "why" in this equation.

Then, the only time I've tried to connect my Ledger to Bitcoin Core I failed. It should be, in theory, possible, but it may (still) not be straightforward. So you may need a more complicated setup and a pruned node may not help in this/may not be enough. I have my own setup with full node (on a separate HDD) and a local Electrum server, since Electrum is friendly enough with my Ledger. As said, a pruned node still downloads the entire blockchain, just doesn't keep it all on your disk. Even more, a pruned node services one wallet; if you for some reason want to switch to another wallet you may have to re-download the whole blockchain (and since I do make tests now and then, this is a no-go for me).

If you only use one wallet, maybe a setup with Bitcoin Core (pruned) and Sparrow wallet would do. But you have to check for yourself...
3531  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MS Word vulnerability could lead to stealing your bitcoins on: June 06, 2022, 08:07:24 AM
For anyone that hasn't actually changed from Windows to Linux, who has tried in the past, but couldn't get along with it. Common distributions like Ubuntu are now incredibly similar to Windows. The change over would be somewhat seamless.
I would personally avoid recommending Ubuntu to masses who want to switch from gates OS, even if it is better option than wiNd0ws OS, there are better Linux alternative.
Maybe best option is Linux Mint or Debian that are rock stable, they have familiar style for switching to Linux, and most Bitcoin wallets works perfectly for them.
Most of them are coming with preinstalled alternative Office package with Word.

I am mainly a Windoze user and I cannot give it up on this laptop because it's expressly needed for my work, but I've put Linux Mint to my wife's laptop and it's basically straightforward.
On the other hand, I've tried both Debian and Ubuntu on WSL and I didn't find them as friendly as Mint. So I agree with @dkbit98 on this.
And yes, most of the tools are similar. I didn't get to see yet if Only Office also works there.
3532  Economy / Reputation / Re: Meriting Your Alt is no more Merit Abuse? on: June 06, 2022, 07:44:15 AM
But, My question is- When a low ranked user gets caught by others meriting his alts, I see DT members give harsh replies and expose them in a toxic way.

When a newbie does this, he's doing it for farming accounts, for using multiple users in whatever bounties or campaigns (usually against their rules) or for conducting scams.
Also in most cases those are not newbies, are established users' new accounts (btw, I guess that this is not your main account also, so you should know this kind of details).

On the other hand philipma1957 has proven already well enough that he's not interested in scams and these accounts have a clear purpose (you will see that at least Philipma1957cellphone is inactive now).
Plus his alts are clearly stated they're alts.

So it's by far an exception, in the good way. I would have not done that in his place (and if I would have had alts) even if that would have been meaning that for example I would not be able to post images, but being harsh on him for this would be really silly.
Hence I don't know why you are so keen to create this unnecessary drama.
3533  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Virtual Mastercard Cards on: June 03, 2022, 04:32:44 PM
I agree that there are too many "coincidences" coming out in this.
I agree with OP: extreme caution is needed, the chances it's a "rinse and repeat" of the exact same scam are far too big.
3534  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bought anything with btc? on: June 03, 2022, 04:31:17 PM
Like I said, I hardly spend my Bitcoin these days, and in the next few years that isn't likely to change. The potential of Bitcoin's price, is probably our undoing.

I find that extreme too and I don't want to do that.
I prefer the "keep some, sell some" approach. This way my family's budget gets a most welcome boost now and then and I'm fine too, if I die tomorrow at least I've also spent some of my coins.
3535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bought anything with btc? on: June 03, 2022, 04:23:21 PM
The most expensive thing I've bought for bitcoin was a laptop.
Now it's old enough for Win11 not installing on it and I could now buy a new car for those bitcoins.
But yeah, life goes on and money come and go...
3536  Economy / Economics / Re: Jamie Dimon says ‘brace yourself’ for an economic hurricane on: June 03, 2022, 04:19:09 PM
Yeah, if he makes a good enough amount of predictions, some eventually may turn out to be correct.
I do agree that the financial world looks grim at best, still, Dimon's predictions are really worthless.
I guess that he wanted to be on the news again, and, for a change, he is not bashing Bitcoin Cheesy
3537  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SATOSCARD aka CriptoDebit.com is a scam on: June 03, 2022, 04:12:39 PM
As far as we know, they only had some hosting issues. The information we received was that everybody was compensated.

Can you share more details with us, please? As CD is still an operating company.

The complains here are not really about hosting issues: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5394721.new#new
And I find pretty odd that neither of those who got reimbursed came to tell that the things got handled. (which means they didn't)
3538  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitaddress.org - wallet details "error" on: June 03, 2022, 12:36:37 PM
I would also add that using online wallet generators is highly unsafe (I hope that you at least downloaded the git repo and used it on an offline environment).
Even more, javascript based wallet generators are unsafe too.

However, I've done a test for OP and I've got the same result as @Charles-Tim : the private key was imported correctly into Electrum.

So, OP, please tell in more words:
1. what you do exactly (what setup you have to generating the addresses)
2. where you want to try the addresses (what wallet, what OS)
3. how you transfer the information (direct QR from the web page or paper wallet, or copy-paste maybe?) whether you do other steps too?
3539  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Coinriders 2.0 is here + survey on: June 03, 2022, 11:10:21 AM
I find it to be much better than last time I went there. You're definitely on the right track.
I think that I've found something odd though: I was looking at the wonderful TerraUSD. The main grid (stable coins) shows TerraUSD and 0.09$, clicking into it shows TerraClassicUSD at 0.02$. Bug?

Also, can you please check/fix my (old) prediction for Monero? I must have been missing something, since the displayed price doesn't match with the actual prediction.

About the survey: imho the dark theme can be better. The white text may be too white? The dark background too dark? I don't know. Maybe in between. And yeah, the background for daily gained/lost % needs to be changed accordingly.
3540  Local / Presa / Re: Hackathon Supernova 10 Mai - 20 Iunie 2022 on: June 03, 2022, 10:55:18 AM

Variante exista...  Wink
