3581  Economy / Economics / Re: Is bitcoin now the strongest currency in the world? on: March 22, 2013, 04:27:37 PM
As a currency, Bitcoin is still, and will remain for some time, unstable. There are three things that need to change:

- low capitalization - more people need to join
- centralization - I think it is safe to assume that whatever happens with BTC price on MtGox, it will be reflected on other exchanges which make up (please correct me if I'm wrong) less than 10% of the Bitcoin trading market, with MtGox in control of the rest.
- difficulty of getting started into Bitcoin and actually using it safely and conveniently

And I have no need for motorcycles from you, my NX650 is enough for my needs.
3584  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Please dont let bitcoinstore fail, your action is needed just about now. on: March 20, 2013, 09:53:18 PM
But if the value in Bitcoins are rising, then the profit bitcoinstore.com made off of previous sales is rising rapidly as well. It's a win-win for them either way. They will get much closer to their goal because of appreciation even if they have a decline in sales.

That's only assuming they are not converting the Bitcoins into USD.
3585  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Please dont let bitcoinstore fail, your action is needed just about now. on: March 20, 2013, 09:24:57 PM
To be competitive in Europe, it would be really necessary for them to have a warehouse in Europe, so they can cut the shipping cost. I guess there are a lot of folks ready to order - the biggest hurdle are the shipping costs and to the same extent the shipping time.

That doesn't solve the problem of extra VAT/taxes/duties/etc. They would need a local supplier or their current one which is US-based would need to order the products they buy (presumable from China) directly to Europe.

P.S. By Europe I meant the free-trade area.
3586  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Perk of living in the cold on: March 20, 2013, 05:56:24 PM
I used to heat my whole house with mining rigs this and last winter. I had at least one in every room and rest of them in the balcony. It actually got so warm every day that I had to open all the doors and windows for cooling the place down. Average temp during the winter is/was about -10C I think.

If I was generating that much heat, I'd probably figure out a way to heat my hot water with it too...lol.

I used to have a window semi-open in my room 24/7 with temperatures up to -15C during the day and up to -25C at night. OTOH it started to get very cold when I had Internet problems (even after I would close the window until my connectivity returned).

There was a guy on the forums who made a good use of his rigs' heat 2 years ago:

Another thing: WAF!

I have a liquid cooled miner.  It is dead silent,  but the main point is that it heats our bathroom floor.  Pictures says more than words, so I attached a few.

My computer. An oldish Athlon64 X2 in a cabinet from a previous century.  Sorry about the mess.  The cabinet is usually closed for optimal airflow.  You see the water tube entering at the bottom, water passing through the 5970 water block (the shop were sold out of nipples fitting my tubing, and put in some 1/2" tubing and adapters, so it is a bit messy in there), then through my CPU block before heated water leaves at the top.  The direction has a purpose.  If I start the computer with no pump, the water will flow by itself due to convection.  Convection isn't enough for cooling the 5970 as well, so the pump must be running when mining.  And compare the size of the stock cooler in the lower right corner with the water block.  The card is now half as thick, and the PCI socket next to it is usable again!

Tubes going up through the roof above.  This is not finished.  I'll make better connectors closer to the ceiling and box them in later.  The thing on the tube to the right is a flow indicator.  The cable coming out of the same hole and going to a RJ45 socket (not connected yet), connects a series of temperature sensors embedded in the floor and walls, and a temperature and humidity sensor next to the fan in the bathroom.

Tubes under my bathroom floor and one of the temperature sensors (inside a blue shrink hose).  This is now buried in cement and covered with nice tiles.

Reservoir where the water returns.  Inside there is a small pump (300 l/min, 0.5m head), which keeps the water flow going and bubbles out of the tubes.  Water level inside here is 0-level.  In the tubes above the water level in the reservoir, there is actually a vacuum, and the water pressure inside my computer is low.

The best thing about my water cooling and floor heating is that my wife keeps nagging me to buy a second 5970 to make the floor warmer.  Beat this with a air cooled system. :-)

Not related but interesting:

Although, presumably if your earnings are purely in Bitcoin, you'd have to exchange some of them into USD to pay income tax.

Why bother? If you only use BTC for payments you can stay anonymous enough to be safe from govt extortion.

Will it? Bitfloor is already registered as an MSB:

3589  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: "Ł" in the Litecoin name = marketing ticking timebomb on: March 19, 2013, 05:10:58 PM
E.g.: I heard that in France the Toyota MR2 had to be renamed so that it didn't sound like one of their local swear words Cheesy

Yeah, they shortened it to MR, because pronouncing MR2 sounds a bit like merde which means shit/crap.

I don't like the ł in the name though, doesn't 'look' nice to me at all.

John (John K.) - give me an email please

Not sure about gweedo but you can count on John, he is a moderator and runs an escrow service. You don't need his email, you can send him a PM.

Hello

I'm selling my own guide, how I earn 3000$ a month in internet.

My guide costs 2.0 BTC.

I'm selling only 100 copies.

To contact me: Skype: kharchenko.alexey

I will help everyone, who buys my guide.

If you want to be perceived as legitimate I suggest you ask one of the mods or admins (or some other reputable forum member) to try your guide with a big (say, 80-90%) discount or even for free. If that person will be able to vouch for you people will be less sceptical of your offer. I have proposed this solution to another guy claiming to sell guides but received no response, I doubt he sold anything because his offer smelled like it was authored by a scammer and a pliagarist.

EDIT: Ahh, good Smiley

Are you a Cyprus national? I wonder if it is legal to seize funds of foreigners who don't reside in that country, don't pay taxes and don't use public infrastructure. I know that Cyprus is a tax haven for Poles, so I will watch out for their reactions.

Read about it here http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/33fb34b4-8df8-11e2-9d6b-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2Nh4PjXyG.

They took money out of every bank account. Now, that's a first AFAIK.

I would say bitcoin is needed more than ever to save oneself from all those banksters.

Would anyone kindly copy the entire article and put it here or on a pastebin ? That silly site asks for free registration and then you can read a whopping 8 articles for free every 30 days after that.

3596  Other / Meta / Re: This forum is infested with scammers on: March 15, 2013, 11:08:23 PM
Another good solution would be to force everyone to agree on an arbitrator with their trading partner before trading. Then whenever someone claims that they were scammed, the arbitrator would decide who gets a scammer tag. I'm not sure if I could easily force everyone to do this, though, since transactions are almost always finalized via PMs.

So sort of... obligatory escrow? Or would the arbitrator only decide about the scammer tag? It would be interesting if the trusted arbitrator also escrowed the deals, I'm sure a hell of a lot less people would get scammed/ With so many deals going on on the forum how many arbitrators would there need to be? What compensation would they get? How would they be chosen?
I think the idead is interesting but worth discussing first.

Biggest problem I foresee I... trust.
We had quite a few legitimately reputable members turn scammers, how could we trust arbitrators?

You don't have to cut it - takes too long. It takes a few seconds with a soldering iron by melting the plastic.

There was thread a while back (last year) by mufa23 who claimed to have found out who's Satoshi (apparently all the necessary info were to be found on the forums/Internet). He was asked no to discolse the info by many, including at least 1 Moderator and in the end the thread was locked and mufa deleted his posts. As I was following the thread I remember he didn't really give any info that could help. But maybe that's good.

Here's the thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=103611.0;all

he deleted his posts but they were still quoted by some people
apparently Satoshi is (or was a few months ago) an active forum member.
3599  Economy / Speculation / Re: Do the Banks manipulate Bitcoin? on: March 15, 2013, 02:01:35 PM
Bank can go short when have Bitcoin, If you have no Bitcoin then you cannot selll Bitcoin under market price.
Not quite true. For example, all Mt Gox trades take place within their internal database. It is theoretically possible for them to allow a customer to sell bitcoins they don't actually have. The scam could be covered up for a long time unless their customers regularly withdraw their entire Bitcoin balance.

If everybody demanded their Bitcoins at the same time it would quickly become apparent if they had sold more bitcoins than they actually had, and the scheme would unravel very quickly.

I doubt it. Then they would suddenly ask everyone to send them all of the documents that are always necessary when the system flags an account as potentially criminal or if someone wants a higher withdraw limit. During the time they could claim to be 'processing' the documents they could buy back enough bitcoins for people to withdraw. They would pay less because after driving the price down they would be able to buy them cheaper.

Haven't watched TV since 2007. Used to waste 2-3 hours a day before. I don't download shows, only movies that are not shown in cinemas.
