^^ Ja saw it here first in Hardware and replied there... Cheesy
362  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain is getting called out for issues with a couple of their S19 models... on: March 09, 2023, 02:04:35 AM
So what Bitmain just got in a new fresh-from-university bright-eyed engineer with no hands-on Real World design experience and told them, "we know the current design formats work quite well but want to do it differently. Make it so!"?

Sooo many things wrong with what is described and shown in the pictures...
I know! They used the idjit responsible for the terrible AMT/Bitmine.ch A1 CoinCraft miner hash boards as a consultant!  Grin Grin Grin Roll Eyes
363  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Can new miners still make good profit? on: March 07, 2023, 08:50:24 PM
Of course they can: Provided they have VERY cheap electrical power. For the most part that rules out any home miners because residential service rates are typically 2-3x higher than commercial & industrial rates are. Even the commercial/industrial rates vary widely among the various states and countries.
364  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How to view Stratum Data for an ASIC on: March 07, 2023, 06:05:12 PM
If you are worried about Bitcoin, you should say something about the spam that started polluting the mempool since Feb 6, AND those behind it...

Excuse me for being off topic, but I wonder: I think we all agree here that Ordinals is an abomination for Bitcoin. But am I the only one who thinks that there is a possibility that this is orchestrated by owners of big mining pools?
Who are the winners besides these people? Look at the fees on recent blocks: 0.25 BTC, 0.21 BTC, 0.28 BTC...
Ordinals and the mess they are causing is being discussed here
365  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: hardware error on: March 07, 2023, 01:27:45 PM
#1 question: What type of controller is the software running on, BeagleBone? Pi-3 or P-4? Xylinx SoC?
You may just be running out of coms bandwidth  or perhaps even have a memory leak.
366  Other / Meta / Re: what does your username mean and where did the idea come from? on: March 07, 2023, 02:38:16 AM
My 1st post here March 13, 2014 says it all...
After starting Feb of that year with 2x BFL Jalapeno's I was hooked and looking for a bigger miner came across a 520GHs one from AMT that was the Authorized 'Made in USA" clone of the Coincraft miner from the Swiss company Bitmine.ch. Price: $4,089
Short version: as with the BFL Monarchs - major delays and pissed customers. Almost 8 month delay and I along with literally a handful of others did eventually get our miners, in my case a 1TH one for services rendered doing forensics on the crappy, incredibly poorly designed, early versions of the AMT/Bitmine boards.
367  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Where to fix your Asic miners. on: March 04, 2023, 07:51:04 PM
is there a place that fixes GekkoScience Compac F?
Well for 1, ask about your problem in the CompacF thread...Odds are you will find answers to your problem there.
If it is a serious problem - contact the vendor you bought it from for Warranty service.
368  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience has a new pod miner, just in time for Christmas on: March 04, 2023, 04:51:02 PM
Did you tried with this fork of cgminer ?
Quote
nicehash : https://github.com/nicehash/cgminer-ckolivas.git (nicheash extranonce)
I highly doubt it would work as it will not have the s17 chip driver...
You *are* aware that there is a reason #xnsub is not a normal part of cgminer right? Because#xnsub silently bypasses the coinbase checks that would reject work. Without those checks the work can switch to going to anyone, anywhere, any time, any coin, any pool, anything without you ever knowing. Great for pools to take advantage of you. Because no regular mining needs to have that ability it is not a good idea to automatically include support for #xnsub

That said, it Nicehash requires it so your rental miners can change work on-the-fly w/o having to reboot.
369  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Running Compac F & R909 in cgminer at the same time on the same computer on: March 04, 2023, 01:01:01 AM
for those lurking, answers to this starts in the R909 thread
@ OP, to help keep the Forum tidy ya may want to lock this thread so it is not needlessly resurrected...
Cheers   Wink
370  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining .vs buying in a bear market on: March 02, 2023, 06:30:48 PM
<sigh>
#1 question is: What do you pay for electricity? Miners are very power hungry... Would you theoretically earn enough to at least pay the electric bill? If not - forget it.

The 140mm is 158CFM, while the 200mm is just 88CFM. The factory fans are usually 210CFM..
And do remember that the air flow rate is not the whole story - it is the air flow against back pressure that matters the most.

Miner fans are chosen to work against a fair bit of restriction caused by the heatsinks. (that is why they run so fast and loud) Most regular PC case fans are only rated for free flow and a fairly low back pressure so against the restrictions inside of a miner the resulting flow will be MUCH lower.
372  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto network on: March 02, 2023, 01:40:57 AM
Recently according to my research I noticed most digital currencies use more than one network for transactions why is this so
1st: Define 'network'...
I assume you mean different servers & nodes for each different coin and its associated blockchain?
If so - yes and for what should be an obvious reason: They are totally different coins/tokens created by different groups/companies and are serving different markets...

Since this deals with not just BTC but also the plethora of altcoins this really belongs in the Beginners & Help area or General Discussion area. Not here as this section is exclusively for Bitcoin. Requesting the mods move it there.
373  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Running Compac F & R909 in cgminer at the same time on the same computer on: March 02, 2023, 01:31:02 AM
re: Mac mini - unknown. It all depends on the USB/CPU setup in the PC. In the case of Pi-3's and under there is only 1 USB channel to the CPU and that same channel is also used for the LAN adapter.. Pi4 at least has a dedicated LAN channel and I believe 2x USB channels.

Really should ask about this in the R909 channel where Kano is active - he wrote the code being used and has covered the USB data usage in posts somewhere there... Plus, other folks are sure to chime in  Wink
374  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience has a new pod miner, just in time for Christmas on: March 01, 2023, 10:00:08 PM
A couple things to keep in mind:
Barrel jacks are not intended to deliver their maximum rated current 24x7x365

Barrel jacks are rated with the assumption that they are periodically disconnected/re-connected so any oxidation is scraped off and a fresh contact surface is made. At low to moderate currents this is not an issue, as you approach the connector max current rating it is definitely a concern.

As for PCIe plugs - max current is HIGHLY dependent on what kind of plating is on the pins. If silver or gold each pin *can* handle up to 5A per pin. Since there are 3x circuits and each takes 2 pins (1 feed, 1 return) you get the 15A max for the 6-pin connector. Safe max for tin plating is just 3A. Those max ratings also are highly dependent on what gauge & type of wire is used as the wire pulls heat away from the connection. Typically max current only applies to using 16ga copper wire.
375  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Running Compac F & R909 in cgminer at the same time on the same computer on: March 01, 2023, 09:47:10 PM
It's not network bandwidth between pool and miner that becomes a problem - yes that is very minimal.
It's the bandwidth of the work being sent over the USB coms between the chip(s) in the miner and cgminer that is the issue. On a Pi that sets a limit of 13-14 compac-F's with 1 chip before the USB port bandwidth starts to limit things. The R909 with 6 chips is working with 6x the data so...
376  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Running Compac F & R909 in cgminer at the same time on the same computer on: March 01, 2023, 03:07:59 AM
All covered in the R909 thread and the Compac-F thread near that one Do remember, running one R909 is the same data bandwidth as 6 Compac-F's,

Ethereum, for example, was pre-mined ~ the Ethereum Foundation which held $1.6 billion
Bitcoin doesn’t have $1.6 billion lying around to fund development.
This is a very interesting comparison that without money but with innovation you can create a new form of money that after 13-14 years it still stays on top and continues growing while even with billions of dollars but without any innovation you can only create a very hyped up shitcoin that only pumped for 4 years and have been dumping for the past 5-6.
Couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing I would add is that most of that piggy bank is from the original developers pre-mining the hell out of the coin(s) before opening it to the public.
378  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: "Bitcoin’s Future Hinges on Donations, and That’s Got People Worried" on: February 25, 2023, 01:22:00 AM
Donations to who?
a. The major developers involved in Core *are*already rather well paid by various interests.

b. Most of them have been involved in the development of BTC almost since it's earliest days and still have rather tidy sums of the BTC they've acquired during that time so they are certainly not hurting for money. Hell, a few years ago Luke Jr. bragged about still having several thousand BTC ... Because of this, 'a.' is more than anything just to keep them actively interested in watching over BTC vs paying them to be under direct control of business interests. So far, overall they have been good stewards and Keepers of the Flame.

c.You imply that some sort of continuing large-scale corporate-funded development needs to be implemented... For what? "Additional features and functions"?

The existing BTC technology does not need to be and SHOULD NOT BE tampered with by adding things that have no bearing on what BTC was intended to do: be a means of acquiring, holding, and transferring funds with it being community developed and guided.

The goals of altcoins like ETH are entirely different - ya know, "Smart Contracts" and all. It was created as a business, by business people (who became obscenely rich of course), to serve a wide varity of business functions and is ran as a centralized business controlled by a handful of people who are in it purely for the $$$$$ it makes them.
379  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: An honest answer on mining with solar on: February 24, 2023, 10:54:43 PM
Something else to keep in mind is that unless there is a grid-tie or one helluva battery bank to keep the miners running 24x7, having the miners cycling on & off every day will put large thermal stresses on the chip/heatsink interfaces and the multitude of solder joints in a miner. Miners run HOT and the large temperature swings will not be good...

Hundreds?  Wink
Try 10's of thousands and more at any one location. The largest farms like FoundryUSA each run 100's of thousands overall.
