361  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Bitmine Avalon Clone Batch #1 (starts shipping next week!) on: August 28, 2013, 05:55:33 PM
Well even at those rates... Thats 105 BTC (10.5 BTC x 10 blades) and 110 BTC (5 BTC x 22 Jalapenos) for equivalent hash rate... so I should be raising my price Smiley This is one machine. I think the math is very clear here. Thanks.

YEP the Math IS Clear.

ASICMINER Blades are now 3.5  BTC:

So 35BTC.

Has anyone had the problem where the box will be just fine for the first day, but then hashrate just drops off to ~60Ghash?  I have a 3-mod B2 and 4-mod B3 that both do this when using auto with a range of 325-350 after a while.  What is interesting is the hashrate reported on the GUI stays the same, but the pool shows the reduced rate.  I also end up noticing a large amount of HW errors it seems during this same time (one time I had a whole module seem to stop reporting shares).  (all Aug firmwares)

Funny thing is, if I set it to 340mhz max the errors drop to 0.6-0.8%.  345mhz shows around 1.9% or so.  Seems to be the same on both boxes. I have an AC unit blowing directly into the intakes and the B2 runs 45C and the B3 runs 58C.  Fans are default speeds, it almost seemed like upping them manually caused more issues?

At this point I am leaning towards just setting 335mhz or something and say forget it, I had weeks of uptime at 300mhz clocks and just got around to OCing as of late.
364  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HASHFAST warranty just TEN DAYS after delivery? on: August 21, 2013, 01:53:39 AM
Avalon has zero warranty.  Did it stop anyone then?  Maybe a few...
365  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: August 21, 2013, 12:48:29 AM

Actually turns out the 850watt didn't burn out.  After 2 weeks, I think it overheated and shutoff when my ac was turned off. ... Still though, I ordered a corsair hx 1050 gold to serve as primary psu.

Well that is good to hear!  Just FYI the Corsair HX 1050 is about 1cm too long to fit inside.  That's why I was hoping the V1000 would fit, but I am not sure if all the connectors will clear.  It may work with using 2 out of the 3 PCI-E cables, not sure.  Any problem with leaving just PCI-E 3 disconnected?   Not sure how the power board distributes power.
366  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: August 20, 2013, 04:04:52 AM
One of my  Batch #3  Avalon stopped hashing  Solid Red light and flashes an Orange light every few seconds.

I can remote into it, however fans and hashing is at 0.

Turns out my 850w Seasonic Gold  PS burned out  A/C went out for a few hours too :/  Overclocked at 358mhz on 4 modules.  I am going to RMA it and buy a 1000-1300watt gold PS.

Luckily I bought a 750watt bronze and I disconnected the 4th module to get it up.

Ouch.  Sorry man.  Pulling 980W+ at the wall on a 850W PSU just isn't good, regardless of "Seasonic or not".  Can't say I didn't warn ya though:

Batch#:  3
Modules:4
PowerSupply: 850w Seasonic Gold Modular
[Firmware Version] => 20130723
Chip Frequency(Default: Advance):  350(insane); 354 is actual read out.

Umm....

850W with 4 modules at 350+mhz?

I hope you have another PS laying around for when this one goes up in smoke.

For comparison, I have a good 910W PS on a B3 @ 325mhz and it pulls ~915W from the wall, a 65W increase from 300mhz which was 850.  My estimates put 350Mhz B3 4 module at 980W give or take from the wall, or basically you need a 1KW+ supply guaranteed!

Personally I am about to order one of these, as I am in your same boat (950W at the wall on a 910W PC Power & Cooling - hoping it doesn't fry with calculated 840W actual load, but 12V rail is still 12.2 so I think I'm good...) on my 4-module:

FYI the 1300W Rosewill is too large to go inside a Batch 3 Avalon.  I am hoping the v1000 will fit.

He may be running close but under the PSU's max. Seasonics are tank PSU's.
Assuming your PSU is 90% effecient at that sort of powerdraw(which its likely less) that roughly a 90watt overhead from the wall. 915 - 90, leaves actual load near 810watts. His seasonic should have no prob with that.

Oh I agree SeaSonics are good.  I have an older one that mined a lot on GPUs.

What I was pointing out was 915W is @ 325mhz.  From the post above mine that reported draws at different speeds, I think its safe to say 950W-975W appears to be the "wall" draw @ 350mhz.  That puts him right at 860-885W PSU rating, which while it may work now WILL reduce lifespan of the PSU.  Just think about it, there is a reason Seasonic rated it 850 NOT 900  Wink

I think the one benefit of being a former GPU miner is I personally feel I have a mini-bachelor in PSU performance....  Multi Rail, Single Rail, efficiency, ripple, brand, ratings... all plays into the mix.  At home today I have SilverStone, Seasonic, Thermaltake, PC Power & Cooling, Enermax,  CoolerMaster running today all 700-1KW.

But I digress, as long as it works, and you have a spare, go ahead and run that bad boy hard!

369  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Glad chips haven't shipped... on: August 15, 2013, 05:22:35 PM
Why should anyone bother with Avalon or BFL when you can get other chips that are faster, more efficient and delivered on time with companies that are actually polite, responsive and supportive when you develop DIY boards? Note that many are also offering "protection" against the vagaries of the difficulty spikes...

Oh how history is soon forgotten...

I think the key here isn't promises made beforehand, but delivery as promised.  We have yet to see if KnC, BitFury, etc will actually deliver on anything thus far promised!  Lets see how that "protection" works if/when they slip dates...  Remember BFL was heralded as the king of ASICs this time a year ago, and they were selling with PayPal so you'll get your money back if they don't deliver as promised in "two weeks"(tm)!

I am running 0703 and kind of scared to update to 0813/0814.  One person got bricked, several others report decreased hash rates.  Anyone got positive results yet?
Me?

Just upgraded a Batch2 with stock firmware to 0814.  No problems so far!

How long does the auto option take to increase the frequency?
371  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Glad chips haven't shipped... on: August 15, 2013, 12:09:46 AM
Yes to "be fair" to the Batch 3 owners chips should continue to be delayed for 7+ weeks   Wink

Batch 1 was late.  Batch 2 was late.  Batch 3 was late.  People said "but chips are different".  Nope sorry!

Watching all this go down when chip sales were announced I thought two things:

1.  Well there goes my Batch 2/3 investment, cannibal Avalon...
2.  Anyone believing chips would ship as estimated hasn't been paying attention, Avalon has historically always been at least 1 month late, with 3+ being more likely.

But still, 1-3 months late is NOTHING compared to the travesty that is BFL...

What I think most people need to understand that is clear now - ASIC Makers don't WANT to release too fast.  That would kill orders and slay the goose laying the golden eggs (aka miner's money!)

As for everyone freaking out about the difficulty - that's partially because B3 finally fully made it out the door!  Just imagine when chips hit...
372  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: A plea to Yifu on: August 14, 2013, 10:30:34 PM

  • Why were the chips 4 weeks late?

*** your 4 weeks and family dinners. Why were our batch# 3's 12 weeks late??

Those complaining about chips have little to gripe about versus the B3 being MUCH more costly and MUCH more delayed.

Remember chips weren't even ANNOUNCED when B3 went up for sale.

Any compensation SHOULD go to B3 owners first.

And no, I don't think there will be any compensation.
373  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: August 13, 2013, 07:17:04 PM
Has anyone produced a graph of clock frequency vs wall power on a batch #2 unit?

I have a GX 850 power supply, and I have mixed messages whether it is enough to power a 4 module unit clocked at 347 MHz.

I wouldn't even dare.

4 module B3 stock @300mhz draws ~850W from the wall.  Load a PSU @ 100% 24/7 is asking for a bad time!
374  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Useless ASICs on: August 13, 2013, 06:49:59 PM
However, when they do become unprofitable and are turned off, it is doubtful they will ever see service again

Thats how a feel about my GPU rig in the garage.  Who really wants crazy BTC abused GPUs that ran 2-years at 75C and 80% fan that were bought used in the first place?

The rig made me enough money its not really worth my effort to part out 5850 GPUs and Core2Duo CPUs for 0.5 BTC/ea.  Heck that rig made me 2BTC/day at one point!

375  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 100 TH/s jump today on: August 13, 2013, 06:37:29 PM
Why is this such a mystery?  Avalon Batch 3 pretty much just came online in the past 2 weeks.  Also some of the first chip Avalon chip batches have arrived.  That's >50TH right there!  Add in China/ASICMINER spitting out chips like crazy and well...
376  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Need Avalon Ribbon (signal) cable how to find NON-IDE? on: August 13, 2013, 08:08:28 AM
40 pin cable is 40 pin cable,right??.... & the wires aren't "crossed" in the ribbon or near either end,are they??

Glad you don't have an Avalon and need a cable!

This:

2 points:

1, keep the case closed.
2, the 40pin ribbon cable our using is not IDE cable. IDE cables have some internal connect.
377  Bitcoin / Hardware / Need Avalon Ribbon (signal) cable how to find NON-IDE? on: August 13, 2013, 07:10:07 AM
Title says it all.

I have an Avalon with a module externally connected due to a short ribbon cable.  Yifu said the pinout for IDE would fry the board, so don't want that!

Seems like searching for "flat IDC 40 pin" gives a lot of results.  But does anyone know how to "test" a cable to see if the connectors are wired for IDE?

I know back in the day I had IDE cables, some were "key"d better than others.  Wishing I could find one of those old cables now!

Problem is, even if I did find a cable I think might work, how would I go about confirming this?

http://pinouts.ru/HD/AtaInternal_pinout.shtml

That seems to show a lot of pins are used for ground, perhaps those are shorted on the IDE (ie non-straight-through) cables?

Anyone got a source for an Avalon-compatible cable?  Seems like instrument tech type suppliers would have the best chance...
378  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Holy 50Thash batman! on: August 10, 2013, 06:28:04 AM
Not sure why this is a mystery...

Batch 3 was FULLY SHIPPED.

This is what unregulated looks like.  Sure there are fraudsters.  Nothing stops that.  Sure there are scams.  Nothing stops that either.  But at least here you have a CHOICE.  You weren't required to trust Yifu.  You decided to.  I decided to.  We all did.  We made a mistake.  We bet on someone who didn't already iron out all the kinks.  Turns out some of those kinks were pretty solid.

Yes, Yifu made promises he couldn't keep.  So did BFL.  This isn't the first time and won't be the last.  But Jesus you all wine so much about being "scammed" when part of the reason many of you are even HERE was because you believed in unregulated markets.

Caveat Emptor, right?  Maybe this will teach us to properly vet the investments we choose to pursue.

Received 4 mod Avalon today... nicely packed, but 9db antenna is missing... have to find replacement! Came with 101.24BTC invoice and they read BTC symbol = $, so that saved quite lot!

They stated all batches after the first come with NO accessories or power cords.

So no antenna is normal.
