3601  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is it worth buying & selling? on: September 25, 2013, 01:54:59 PM
there is good resale value in asics, but it drops fast.
I resold two 0.7BTC erupters for 0.75BTC each plus 4oz of silver bullion
I recently sold 3 0.2BTC erupters for $100 total

so far, ive made 4oz of silver (~$85), 2 erupters, and a small amount of mining income (~0.08 BTC) profit
I also have a deal to sell 6 0.17BTC erupters for $180 this weekend.

While I love my new bitfury (at a fairly steady average 34Ghash poolside) and have more of its boards on order, I am weighing out options to sell it. Perhaps when it becomes a 100GH unit with the october cards I will try to resale it at face value minimum, not counting the mined bitcoins (currently ~0.16/day at 33gh)

I would like someone to write up a guide of backing up everything on the sd-card to a usb stick. I would do this myself if I knew how to, but sadly my linux skills are in the ballpark of none-existent.
Some points I'd like to see:

1. I would prefer if it did not require installing any additional programs.
2. The usb stick needs to be made bootable.
3. The guide should include info on how to modify the boot order between the SD card and USB-stick.

Hopefully someone is up to the task, Im sure this would come in handy for many users over time.

You'll probably better of just making a duplicate of your sd card.
What would you like to do with the usb stick ?
You can't boot the raspberry with it.
Boot your PC maybe, then what ?

Oh I didnt realise the Pi can't be booted off a usb stick.
.. but still, how would I copy Sd to Sd with the Pi... I guess this involves the use of another computer and a virtual machine for those not running linux ?

there are several windows programs that can create .img files of drives or devices, and then later load the iomages to a different device or sd card. I did that with my most recent setting so that if the sd card needs repair it is much simpler then the last 2 times (no monitor/KB for the raspberry, so i had a vmware ubuntu on my laptop to sudo modify the card - PITA)

I feel like im missing something. what are the final full details of the options?:

1) how much btc is returned from a 2.2BTC K16?
2) how much hardware is available in lieu of refund? (pcb, chips, etc)?

Its worth noting that after a sd card re-build, and using 2 workers and a pencil mod of 1.178k; I am getting a fairly stable average of 34.5 ghash/s, based on 33-37 ghash fluctuations.

If there are a few people in the Toronto area who want to share shipping ( i can offer local reshipping for cheap), i might be down for a few units

Well, if possible post your  proxy_pools.conf  (not rpoxy_pools)  - I don't think they are running.   I'd guess bad config...

As a sanity check, you can always put the original pool configuration back and try restarting the proxies.

Here you go.  Showing both:

https://i.imgur.com/Lw1zyeg.jpg

Did the Sanity Check and it started right off!  WTF.  I guess I can't use that pool?

I use this just fine :
mint.bitminter.com             3333           XXX.BF1       XX1
mint.bitminter.com             3333           XXX.BF2       XX2

I think your problem is trying to use port 3332. use 3333 and 2 workers

INTERESTING: I just changed from 3 workers to 2 workers only, and my hashrate has gone from 30.5-33 GHash average per 'bitminter shift' to a much more steady 34.2-35.0 GHash. It seems bitminter does NOT benefit from 3 workers>2 workers. I have yet to see how 1 worker only is handled, but this seems pretty optimal at the moment
3607  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bitfury ASIC sales in EU and Europe on: September 24, 2013, 11:35:23 PM
Lol, for me the fun is getting a brand-spankin' new PSU!  We are obviously of different mindsets... I'm the shopper and you're the tinkerer.  And I'm happy hashing away at stock speeds and you'll probably break out the HB pencil the minute you open the box.   Cheesy

I am tempted, although I'm a bit nervous of that particular trick. Seems to be working well for the others though. You've got me looking at new PSUs now - see I do like shiny new things too Cheesy.

100% worth it. if you dont have a multimeter, buy one for 10-15$ and modify from 1.3k(ohm) to 1.2k(ohm) to start. You will get an instant ~20% gain in hashrate when you plug back in and power up. I am running 1.18k roughly for ~32.3Ghash average poolside, but am having slight stability issues that seems to disable one chip so only 15 run. Im working to resolve that (not sure if its software, hardware, or pencil-mod (DC converter limitation) related) so i can get all 16 chips running which would be a stable 34-35ghash

EDIT: worth noting that a recent settings change to use only 2 workers (at bitminter), and "stop miner" start miner" all via the webgui has changed my 30.5-33Ghash spread to a steady 34-35Ghash at the pool. Would one be better?
3608  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: **US** BitFury Setup Guide on: September 24, 2013, 11:30:47 PM
The in circuit resistance is ~1.18K at room temperature. I've not measured the resistance once the system is up to operating temperature. I've moving air across the board somewhat aggressively to keep temperatures constant and the regulator happy. My digikey order came in today and I'll try to work up some stats on swapping resistors out this weekend. I'm not interested in using the pencil mod as a long term solution.

I'd take a "if its not broken dont..." stance on software changes unless you are having similar bus issues. I was interested in the spi changes (increased speed and reset rate) and have observed a positive increase in stability/noncerate by upgrading. I'll try to do a sensitivity sweep of the reset rate to find what works best for my setup on the v2 boards.

any sign of chips stopping at random? When I had 1.16K i could rarely get more then 15 chips working, and sometimes it would drop to 14 at times. I now have about 1.178k and 16 chips work well for the first 5-15 minutes, then it seems to drop to 15 chips again. Ive only once in the last 24hrs seen it drop to 14 chips. Im not sure if this is the chips themselves, or if the pencil mod is pushing the limits of the DC 30A converter and forcing a chip to turn off as some result of that.

Some images of the board:
Very nice, pity about the commercial price of what once started as a great DIY project.

Very pity about the greedy assholes behind the cryptx name you mean?

Do take note that they gouge money out of us who are in a pinch to get at least something back from the Avalon fiasco, then turn around and use that money to build their own hashing farm to make sure we'll never even break even.

Every vendor seems set to screw everyone as hard as they can.

you seem to have missed the class on FREE MARKET 101.

they are building devices that make money, and can easily be utilized to make money for themselves. (some people will bitch about a manufacturer deploying massive hashrate)
they are making these available at a price that people will apparently pay. (some people will bitch about charging out the ass)
they can mine and make money with thier hardware if people arnt paying the advertised price, and itll be up to them to decide if they want to mine or drop the price to offload units (which, again, people will bitch is unfair to the buyers)

IT IS FAIR. They made a design, they built the design, and they have right to use the product as they see fit (selling it for a profit, or mining on it for a profit), and have every right in the world to decide what price to sell at, if at all. For every complaining 'it wont ROI' post in the asicminer thread, 5 people made purchases

if im missing something, please fill me in...

NOTE: I was one of the late august orders and received a 4 channel 2.3 M-board. Comments in this post only apply to those with this board or later revisions.

I pulled the latest commits from the bfsb/chainminer last night and have improvement in the stability of my starter kit over the last 12 hours. Error rates have dropped from ~7% to ~2%. More importantly my previous MISO errors have nearly disappeared. The comments on the pull suggest that by increasing the spi reset rate stability should increase. The H-Card is stable at around 36GH/s. If you are going to pull the latest commits make sure to back up your current software AND make sure you have the proper hardware to do so.

I'd like to hear about other experiences with the new spi resets.

^how did you do this? the chainminer 2.2 release or something different, and how was it implemented? Ive still got ssh errors (mining just fine) and plan to reformat the SD soon, and would LOVE to get my error rate down to 2% - that sounds like a dream compared to the current 6-12%!
3611  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: **US** BitFury Setup Guide on: September 24, 2013, 11:41:13 AM
I tried bitminter and I get 0 Hash, anyone have this problem.

My Bitfury boards like BitMinter as well as BTCGuild.  Are you using mint.bitminter.com 3333?

bitminter works for me, make sure to create and use 3 workers at your account, since the bitfury is load-balanced (not failover). For me through, slush's pool wont read more then 10-15% of my hashrate.

in most home networks, gateway and netmask are 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.1.0) and 255.255.255.0 respectively. ensure your settings match your network's. The webgui can sometimes benefit from using the stop miner and start miner buttons if its not reporting a hashrate. alternatively, use a program to ssh the rpi and check the "nano /run/shm/.stat.log" output to see what is actually going on per chip

***October Supply Adjustment***

We are nearing October shipping cycle and to keep the ship-within-October goal realistic, I've decided to curtail further sales.  There are a few more rigs left on the site for anyone still on the fence.  Cutting sales off now allows us to better plan for shipping all this product within reasonable timeframes and achieve our promised goal and meet your expectations as customers.

After product is sold out, there will be no further product made available until it is in-stock and shipping immediately.  This is likely to be in November, but no promises - it will be dependent on a number of other factors.

Prices will be determined at that time so that we can provide the customer with a suitable ROI picture with respect to network difficulty and competitive offerings.

Regards,
Dave

I like this. its a much better-defined product when you can sell from (likely mining already) stock at market price
3613  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bitfury ASIC sales in EU and Europe on: September 24, 2013, 12:32:23 AM

For me a "unit" is something that does what is defined. Of what this unit consists to do that is irrelevant.

This

i just got my shipment today, with the v2 board, there are no cables , do I need anything extra to assemble this.
kind of clueless where to start. Embarrassed

Need a PSU with 2 PCI-E connectors to connect to M-board. The RPi plugs into M-board and gets its power from that.

This. Once the hardware is connected up, you need to change the default ip thats on the SD card. You can do this via a linux workstation. (I used ubuntu, using the terminal to move to the directory for my sd card (marked as 3.7gb filesystem, with its name being a long hexstring, and:

sudo sed -i 's/10.10.11.249/192.168.1.249/' etc/network/interfaces
sudo sed -i 's/255.0.0.0/255.255.255.0/' etc/network/interfaces
sudo sed -i 's/10.1.1.1/192.168.1.1/' etc/network/interfaces

and you should be able to throw the card in your system, power it on (turn on PSU), and find the webgui at 192.168.1.249 (you may change if using a different ip range)

I have not heard anything about the mining income for delayed august kits, even though it looks like at least one person has (based on a quote about 2-3 pages back).

i'd love to use the income towards a future purchase, especially if there are any discounts or similar for returning customers. even a bonus EOL board would be really cool. (im a little jealous that many of the first half of the august starters got 25-35ghash worth from 2 boards :p)
3616  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: **US** BitFury Setup Guide on: September 23, 2013, 07:35:18 PM
^i could ssh fine until I used the shutdown command rather than a forced power off.

after a shutdown command you will need to recycle the power before it will come back up.

/cet

I've power cycled with psu shutoff, and used the stop/start miner a few times, and still no ssh ability. I could redo the sd card but I'd rather avoid the work and downtime, especially when I'm hashing around 32-33ghash average which I'm happy with until I get more heat sink or an 80mm fan that should arrive soon.

Has anyone tried or looked into replacing the 30a voltage converter? I don't have the skill and tools to replace it myself but an uriius whether anyone has done this to enable overclocking past 35ghash reliably. (I could get to 37ghash but errors increased and id see a [random] chip drop to 0 hashing, which I attribute to either the higher heat or strain on the voltage converter/regulator - noncerate was closer to 34.5ghash)

Main reason I want to ssh is to monitor whether all 16 are running, or if my current hash rate is from 15 chips, since that will help guide me as I tweak the resistance (1.165 was the problematic 32-37ghash range, 1.178 is quite stable between 31-34ghash)

3618  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: **US** BitFury Setup Guide on: September 23, 2013, 04:41:50 PM
What exactly are the miso errors? I usually get 3-5 of them in my stat.log file, and have seen a single chip stop hashing from time to time. Is it related to voltage mod, or something inherent to the board? Hash rate stays fairly stable.

Also, i ran the RPI's 'sudo shutdown' command to turn off the unit (previously I just powered off the psu), and on restart am unable to ssh to the pi. (I enter user, enter password, then get "server unexpectedly closed network connection" from the putty program). Did my shutdown method alter the ssh file or settings? The bitfury Web guide and bit miner both show normal hashing

Looks like my chip 17 took a dump. Maybe my EOL card is 100% dead now instead of 50%.
Guess I'll wait to mess with it until I get to work tomorrow.
20Gh/s overnight is way better then 0 if the SD card is popping errors again.

use the webgui to stop and start the miner. sometimes that throws a 'stalled' chip back into gear. I sometimes find my unit running only 15 chips, and this fixes it
3620  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] US/North American Bitfury sales now open ***full prototype pics*** on: September 23, 2013, 01:06:58 AM
Kit #1:   3 cards:
1: 30.609GH/s
9: 31.339GH/s
13: 29.335GH/s

Kit#2:  2 cards:
Bank 1
1: 30.723GH/s
9: 30.093GH/s

i penciled the resistor to about 1230ohms.

Should I have done that or go lower?

I was able to do 1.18k Ohm... I've been steady at around 33Gh/s.

I tuned down to 1.165k, getting around 35Ghash, and 33Ghash/noncerate at the pool. Amazingly, chip #13 which was running at ~300mhash with tons of errors now works just fine.

I had a similar issue with one chip on an h-card. When I changed the resistance to 1.2k the chip went from ~0.100 to 2.000. That said I did need to clock it lower than the rest of the chips to achieve a reasonable error rate. At 53 it throws about 4% errors.

hmm sounds like the exact same issue. i have that chip tuned at 53 now with 6% errors

However, i now find that after some operation 1 chip (usually random, but 6 or 7 seem slightly more common) will drop to 0 hashrate until i stop and start the webgui. What could cause this? I am wondering if the chip is being shut off due to the increased voltage. With all 16 chips i see ~37Ghash and 34Ghash noncerate. with 15 its 35Ghash and 32.5ghash noncerate

temperatures seem okay. they are only slightly warmer then the original was before heatsinks and modding, and have significant airflow. (i read that fan/airflow vibrations can cause issues - is this actually a thing or an annecdote?)
