3621  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I am facing problem with dash electrum wallet. Someone please help. on: May 25, 2022, 02:55:33 PM
How? Can you please give the full instruction ?

Imho this may not work at all, since (at least in the case of Bitcoin) the Electrum seed is not matching the standard BIP39 seed; I'd guess that this could be the the reason for "bad recovery phrase" error.
However, for IanColeman's (offline, safe copy, remember?), in theory you should:

1. Enter the 12 words in the mnemonic box
2. Select DASH in the coin combo
3. Maybe play with the tab from under Derivation Path (you may have to get to one or another set of addresses)
4. Import the private keys to an actual wallet.

I think that a better approach would be to find an Electrum that actually starts and you can recover your wallet from seed (I think that it doesn't matter it cannot connect to any server), see the Addresses tab and get for the top addresses (how many? depends on how much you've used the wallet) the private keys, import those into another wallet.
See web archive page @nc50lc has posted.
Again, your Electrum seed may not work in another software.

LE: if you are OK with Linux, this fork/copy may also be of help: https://github.com/dashhive/electrum-dash
3622  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it a good time to start accepting BTC? on: May 25, 2022, 11:29:00 AM
I have been following Bitcoin prices for some time, and now I'm doubtful if it is a good time to start accepting it as it has changed so much in the past months. Those who accept Bitcoin - is it worth it? And do you accept Bitcoin straight to your wallet, or do you use third-party services?

If you use a third party service and you get fiat then I guess you already have nothing to lose, although such services may be more and more avoided by bitcoiners because of the ever growing KYC requirements.

If you decide to keep the coins yourself or exchange (parts or all) yourself then the recommended software is BTCPay server, but that's about investing and it's a decision you have to make for yourself. Also in this case you have to find out how will the accountancy look like.

However, it's said that it's always the good time to start with bitcoin.
Whether it worth it or not? It's hard to tell, it may depend on each and every one's goals.

Whatever is your choice, good luck!
3623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How many confirmations required for btc received to be safe from double spend? on: May 25, 2022, 09:17:39 AM
As of right now, how much confirmations should i require after receiving btc before i send funds to the other person?

Since it's you who sends the funds, it's really up to you. Wallets (possibly depending on settings) allow you send even unconfirmed inputs.

Someone mentioned a while back just 1 confirmation is fine but ifs its bigger amounts, you need 3 to 6 confirmations?

Yes, that's how most businesses go.

How much is considered big amount?  Does it depend on the person?

Yes, big amount of money means different thing from person to person.

How many confirmations before its safe to send the funds to the other person?

You're looking to the problem to a completely wrong angle. The acceptable number of confirmation is not related to sending, it's related to accepting, really.
Let me explain: if you consider the funds "good" even without confirmation, you have the chance to get scammed. If you send unconfirmed funds and those will never be confirmed, you also can be seen as trying to scam the one expecting funds from you.
So, at least in theory, it's you who have to see for yourself if 1 confirmation is enough for your peace of mind or not. It's you who has to check if the funds sent out got confirmed as expected.
In reality, if the recipient of your funds is a business (casino, sportsbook, whatever), they do have their own rules and will credit your account based on those rules, so you can easily be, let's say, less careful on that.

Could a transaction still be cancelled after one or two confirmations?   Are there examples of this happening?

Yes, it can happen, but the more the number of confirmations, the tinier the chance for that to happen.
Technically it can happen that for various reasons there's a chain split - some nodes see block X mined, some others don't see X, see Y instead. Then, depending if miners/pools mine the next block, then longer chain is accepted by all; if the new chain is built on top of X, then block Y is lost, if the new chain is built on top of Y, then X is lost.
The "lost" transactions are not necessarily lost, some were present in both X and Y already, some will be mined afterwards.
But there are no example to be seen on the blockchain because the bad (orphaned) block is discarded/not stored; it's like it never happened.

All in all, even if you accept only 1 confirmation there's a huge chance you'll get no troubles and, if the sender is legit, the tx will get confirmed sooner or later.
If you go for 3+ you are on a really safe side.

Heard people would scam by sending btc and then getting you to send... but when they sent btc, it had 0 confirmations and they later reverse it?

It not really reverse, instead they send the same money somewhere else faster. If you want to avoid getting scammed you should never consider you've received money unless there's at least one confirmation.

How do you make sure here?  Example imagine you had some online funds or were to sell something to someone even... how much confirmations before you send or ship them whatever they want to buy?  Does it matter ii its for 5 dollars vs 500 dollars vs 5000 dollars?

Again, you're looking from the wrong side. The one accepting the payment has to be careful on that, not the sender.
3624  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why not tag all bounty hunters? on: May 25, 2022, 08:50:32 AM
I did a count in my posts archive. Facebook is mentioned 19.8 million times, Twitter 30.9 million times (this probably includes double counting the links, but even without that it's still staggering number considering the forum only has 60 million posts in total and I haven't included posts that were deleted in the first 10 years.
(counting the Facebook and Twitter posts took a lot longer than I expected, hence my late reply)

Wow. I didn't expect such numbers and I didn't also expect you count them (although I know that you have the data at hand).

It seems like fighting bots doing mindless tasks.
[...]
And it's even allowed, so although useless, reporting is futile.

I see it different, sorry.
I see it like cleaning the dust in the house, although knowing that more will come in.
I see it like cleaning the leaves, although knowing that, especially in the autumn, there will be the same mess again.
Making your surroundings more pleasant or at least bearable (not necessarily/not only for yourself) is not not really futile.
Should I start a career in poetry or such?

So yes, ignoring can help your mental health, but it can be done only per-user (maybe you can even make yourself a script based on certain "rules"). Reporting keeps the forum bearable. And we already have this. Overall, as I said, most probably nothing will change.
3625  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time to get the txn from lightning network to btc blockchain on: May 25, 2022, 08:34:28 AM
1. How long does it take for a txn settled in lightning network to be confirmed in BTC blockchain?

As said, LN transactions are off-chain. So you will get the coins
* in case it was you creating the channel, when you and your peer will close the channel between you two (which afaik is an on-chain transaction and that one has to be confirmed)
* in case you use a third party service for LN, it depends when and how the third party sends you those coins (or credits your account if it's a custodian wallet).

2. Is it possible to trace all the txn history in lightning network.(for e.g. https://explorer.lbtc.io/)

Each LN node knows only the transactions routed by it; so the answer for you is no.

3. Is bitcoin core able to send to lightning wallet? lightning wallet address are way too longer than the segwit address.

Afaik Bitcoin Core doesn't handle LN.
So if, for example you use Blue Wallet for LN (please don't take it as an advice to use this one, it's just an example I know), there's a bech32 address you can send to in order to fund "your"[1] LN wallet you can send further LN transactions from.

[1] Actually it's not entirely yours, since the LN "wallet" in Blue Wallet is a custodian account.
3626  Economy / Economics / Re: Solar panels set to be mandatory on all new buildings under EU plan on: May 25, 2022, 08:00:04 AM
Interestingly I see no words about the maintenance of those solar panels. We may easily end up with people installing the panels because they have to, but most will have basically no efficiency after a few years because of dust, hail and so on. Hence without this we can easily end up creating more pollution than clean energy...
Together with not separating the rules for northern countries from the south makes me think that, typical for EU lately, they've rushed it and didn't give it a good thought.
3627  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: There must be some don't do with hardware wallets or there is none? on: May 25, 2022, 07:21:30 AM
I will add to mk4 list:

* Make sure you use the HW with a new seed generated by that HW, not a seed you've used somewhere else, especially if that seed was in a hot wallet
* Reset your hardware device and make sure you don't just get a pre-existing seed (there were cases the HW already had a seed and it was known by seller or a previous owner who has returned it).
* After writing down the backup 24 words, verify them: force the HW restore from seed and make sure you get the same addresses
* If you live in an overly humid place, store the HW in a sealed plastic bag
* When you sign a tx with HW make sure you check good enough what's displayed there (addresses, fees, whatever); a HW still doesn't protect you from clipboard malware or your mistakes
3628  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Physical Bitcoin for the 3rd World on: May 25, 2022, 07:07:15 AM
I like the durability of credit cards, but in the target market, vendors are not equipped for any electronic equipment. The bolt card seems to require a companion electronic wallet.

I find this a better path, although, yes, you have to do proper research here too.
I think that you can easily require a smartphone with NFC, it may be easier for everybody. I don't know though if only the merchant has to have the hardware, or will the customer have to have it too (in order to avoid troubles).

Satochip based hardware wallet works on NFC and its companion code is open source. Although I can guess it's not 100% what you need, you may gather some knowledge also from taking a look there. Just an idea...
3629  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Threads translation challenge for newbie's. on: May 24, 2022, 02:10:02 PM
I am a newbie with an interest of wanting to translate thread of other languages but I completely don't have the idea on how to go about it, the processes and procedures acrued it.

I need some experience and contributions to this. As I believe it may not only be of help to just me but to other niewbies and probably, junior members too that are facing such challenge.
Thank you!

1. If you want to translate a topic to your own mother tongue or a language you know very well, you can start with quoting it and removing the starting and ending quote tag so you have the proper formatting. You can use that post as a starting point for yours.

Keep in mind that you won't be able to post images.
You should add in your post the name of the one who wrote the original and also a link to the original post.
You usually don't have to translate more than the first post, clearly not the entire thread.

2. Since you were asking about translating an entire thread, it may be that you want to use tools in order to simply understand entire threads in foreign languages.
If that's the case, you can open https://translate.google.com/ select the correct target language (you can leave source language on auto-detect) and paste the link to the thread in the source box; the result will be another link which, when you open, will be the translation. Not a great one, but still useful.
3630  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real-estate & Crypto on: May 24, 2022, 12:37:14 PM
Hello guys,
Do you know where is can purchase legally a real-estate asset in crypto?

The first "usual suspects" would be the countries Bitcoin is legal tender or has a good legal status: El Salvador, Central-African Republic, Panama.
Then there was in the news not long ago that this can be done (and has been done) in Portugal.
And overall, as long as Bitcoin is not illegal in a country and you (or the real estate selling middle man) can find a payment processor accepting Bitcoin, you can do it.

Just beware, in some cases you may have to pay tax for the gains in crypto (even if you use a payment processor, you may be seen like you've sold the coins).

So you should really check what's the status exactly in the countries of interest with officials in the matter, to avoid surprises.
3631  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Physical Bitcoin for the 3rd World on: May 24, 2022, 10:03:31 AM
Broadcasting transactions over the radio seems like a step backward. How would this increase privacy?

Dollar bills (which are currently used) are paper too. Let's take currency evolution one step at a time.

BitCheques are folded, sealed, and laminated (with the private key hidden inside). All this could eventually be done on a self-contained machine. But that would be phase 2. Having a storable paper wallet is an improvement over not having access to bitcoin at all. Making it into a physically exchangeable note is the bigger challenge (financially - not technologically). Hoppers, folders, and laminators are available off the shelf.

Dollar bills are indeed paper too (special paper, still, OK). Just Dollar bills are IOU papers.
From my understanding BitCheques are something different and no matter how you fold and laminate the paper, somebody may counterfeit it. Since they are not IOU, when one will try to spend the underlying bitcoin and will see they were already spent, it won't be pretty.

But, again, I might have missed something, since the current collectibles kinda risk the same problem: somebody skilled enough could counterfeit them or sell them after peeking on the private key. I don't know though how the seal can be replaced with an identical one; but in your case, at least at first glance, it looks simpler.
3632  Economy / Services / Re: european binance account on: May 24, 2022, 09:14:00 AM
and am not try to scam anyone i have proof

What stops you recover the account by submitting your documents after the buyer has deposited money in there?
Nothing.
So the possibility to scam is... too high.
3633  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC -85% FROM ATH IN NOVEMBER..... on: May 24, 2022, 09:11:02 AM
The first 2 both lost 85% before reversing upwards.. Can we expect the same now?

We keep hearing "INSTITUTIONAL ADOPTION" and a bunch of other buzzwords but why wouldn't it be similar?

Well, hope for the best, but expect the worse.
Institutional investors are a fact. This time/cycle the rise was not so stiff, this time we had 2 distinct ATH formations, we are already pretty far from the last halving and this "crypto winter" was not so bad yet.
Will it get worse? I don't know. Buit with every day passing we are getting closer to the next halving and the end of this cycle.

Was this softened rise and fall a result of institutional investors? Highly possible. Will they buy more if the price goes lower? Also highly possible, since this is the actual meaning of buying low (but they may also sell, hence next ATH may no longer be "fantastic").

But, as I keep saying, we don't know anything for sure until the cycle ends. Then we can look back and make a proper review. Until then .. it's just guessing and hoping.
3634  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why not tag all bounty hunters? on: May 24, 2022, 08:04:07 AM
don't tag them, but just ignore them completely?

At least their "work" on the forum can be limited by reporting the spam posts. I'm almost sure that they are not happy when they see their posts getting deleted. And we have to keep the forum clean (of course, between the limits on what's possible).
But I agree that too much drama goes on around that kind of accounts. On the other hand, it's not the same about all clickbait topics, no matter how many times the same thing was discussed or how useless it is?
So the reality is (as I see it)
* yes, it's too much drama around those accounts
* people seems to like drama, it gives them a reason to post (also keep in mind that most sig campaigns have a minimum quota, but it's not the only reason)
* it's known that the forum grows even with shitposts, as long as they are under a certain threshold

So yes, you're pretty much correct, but I don't think that anything is going to change.
3635  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Physical Bitcoin for the 3rd World on: May 24, 2022, 07:27:26 AM
But why do we have to think so extreme from paper to internet?

I tend to agree with this.

I am sure there are other technologies in between that everyone in Africa can access like radio. Electricity I believe is the main problem but if you could have something like a radio that runs on batteries for weeks. I know I could be sounding nonsense but this is my thought and maybe a genius can point it out.

One doesn't have to be genius, the forum has a lot of solutions gathered, just I don't know if they're properly centralized.

I've read about this in the past, but now the site seems to be down: https://satoshi.radio.br/
but I've found a copy: https://web.archive.org/web/20220405084343/https://satoshi.radio.br/wp/

Another one I've found and it's the first time I see it is https://txtenna.com/

Also don't forget the Opendime-like solutions as physical replacements for Bitcoin, although they're a bit expensive.

I mean, paper is great but I live in Asia and it is very humid and well,,, if you had important papers lying around there is someone ready to break into it.

Water and also fire are the first enemies of the paper one can think on, but human mistakes are just as bad - from misplacing it to forgetting what's it about and tear it into pieces and/or throw it away or spill something onto it.

Imagine if there is no internet what is the possibility they have good safes or safety deposit box?

I think that it makes more sense to keep something better than simple paper in safety deposits; from laminated paper to OpenDime or, if you have proper wallet then the seed can be even imprinted onto steel.

To continue the discussion regarding the safe use of paper wallets as currency

Maybe I'm missing something, but what if a malicious party create multiple copies (Xerox) of the same piece of paper?
I think that whatever you do right, somebody will get scammed, and from there to ruining your reputation is just a tiny step (no matter the scammer wasn't you).
3636  Economy / Economics / Re: Countries with the most expensive fuel | Greece's case study on: May 24, 2022, 07:09:06 AM
In Greece they don’t travel as much.

That doesn't matter at all.
Even if people may not travel such long distances so often, they still do travel. Even more, all goods are sent to supermarkets by trucks, hence the fuel prices are seen pretty fast in everything one is buying.

And, sadly, since a big percent of that fuel comes from Russia, these elevated prices help Russia's war effort. Isn't politics a bitch?
3637  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: May 24, 2022, 06:50:17 AM
I loved how Russell and both red bulls (Verstappen/Perez) were dog fighting for the majority of lap 28-40.
Now this is what F1 fans want to see during a race and not just the same leader for 50+ laps just by getting pole position.
Atleast for me during the Sunday races.

That's correct. At least one Ferrari was missing from the setup, but it was a nice fight and a pretty clean one too.
All in all this year looks pretty good til now, as a show: pleasant to watch, the winner is far from clear, the top cars' performance is pretty close and it's no unnecessary drama.

Before the start of the year I hoped that maybe this time we will see other cars too fighting for the top - maybe McLaren, maybe Alpine, I don't know... Haas was a nice surprise, but now they seem to be drifting away.
But we can't have just everything. Maybe next year Cheesy
3638  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Signing transactions in Electrum hot wallet while temporarily offline on: May 23, 2022, 07:25:59 PM
I've probably given ppl the impression that my computer's infected but I'm pretty sure it's ok - -running Mac with anti-malware/antivirus etc...

It's not you giving the wrong impression, we tend to assume most are running Windows systems. And especially there you can too easy have a can of worms without even suspecting it. That's why we recommend extreme caution, which usually means to treat the computer as infected even if it's probably not.

I wrote it in the past, I'll add it again, just in case: if you plan to give your laptop to a 3rd party (for repairs or whatever) and you had hot wallet with private keys there, you should be very careful on cleaning/wiping the data (and free space too) to not risk giving out your wallet or seed.
3639  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Cheap Node Self Hosting: Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD on: May 23, 2022, 02:12:01 PM
I'm a sucker for laptops nowadays, but unfortunately most of them can handle only one HDD. My preferred setup is adding a large HDD for data that doesn't need to be on the (smaller) SSD.

I usually try to avoid investing into hardware, since its price keeps dropping sharply just after buying. I've bought my laptop in 2017 and I've already been using your strategy: I've bought the laptop with SSD and then added a HDD to it.
My data stays on a NAS that seems to be aging pretty well. I've upgraded there not long ago an 500 GB HDD to 4TB (I feared that bigger HDD won't work there) and now that 500 GB HDD I use for the blockchain, plugged into a thingy that I can connect to on USB3. Clearly suboptimal solution, but I just didn't have the hearth yet to throw away that HDD Grin

But you're right. My laptop's HDD is indeed silent. All I can hear (when I take my headphones off, that is) is the cooler the laptop stands on.

---
I usually don't have the hearth to throw away old stuff, but this topic may be just the thing to convince me do it! I have yet to find a device I can leave running 24/7 without fearing it'll set the room on fire, but I find today's 150-200 EUR too much for a decent RasPi (board only).
3640  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Pruning Blockchain and creating multi wallets on: May 23, 2022, 12:54:17 PM
I don't know if it can be use on my case because I have to generate new wallets from my server and not on the user device. Do you think it can be possible to set my server as a client to generate multiple wallets ?

If you want to create something like e-commerce, creating different deposit address for each of your customers can be done in any wallet.
And if the number of customers (and transactions) is not too big, even a SPV wallet can handle. But if it's something more serious, the wallet software will have to be Bitcoin Core, not a SPV wallet.
But: for this you need only one wallet, you don't need to create different wallet per customer, it's enough to create new address per customer, all in the same wallet.

However, you better confirm your actual use case....
