But instead of the dog, it's craig wright. Grin

No. He should not be advertised in any form; your approach helps him keeping himself not forgotten and heard.
And if I'd advertise him, a black hole would be more appropriate than prison. I guess it's a matter of taste though...

Watt Raspi clones do you mean?

I'd guess that one in the list could be Orange Pi which I heard about not long ago and I don't know it it's indeed good, still, you can read some comparison here: https://versus.com/en/orange-pi-rk3399-vs-raspberry-pi-4-model-b
There may be others too, let's see what @dkbit98 meant.

Besides, i find newer HDD has less noise than older ones.

Yeah, probably. I guess that I've just proven the point that old hardware is probably not worth it Cheesy
3643  Economy / Economics / Re: Countries with the most expensive fuel | Greece's case study on: May 23, 2022, 12:27:21 PM
Greece and Italy too are "in my book" somewhere at the "far end of the pipe", i.e. I think that logistics may be playing an important role in the price, no matter it's a real pipe or it's about transportation on the road.
For those living near the northern part - close to Macedonian border - refueling abroad is a real deal.
Many tourists also do the same - refuel in Macedonia, just before entering Greece.
All this is known and it's not new at all. Of course, in the same way the fuel prices skyrocketed everywhere, they did - most probably proportionally - also in Greece.

I'll tell about Romania. The incomes are also far from great. Romania also extracts some fuel from own soil. And still the price now is over 1.63 EUR and keeps rising (iirc it was under 1 EUR last summer)
Now the northern countries: from what I know at least one of them has huge offshore resources. This means that those countries pretty much near the "start of the pipe". It's, unfortunately, not so much related to how much do people earn, although that fuel price ends up soon in the shelf prices for everything.

And something more: it's interesting to watch how much is the fuel price taxed. In some countries (including Romania) the tax is overly high. It may be the same situation in Greece too. And then it's the government that has to do something, even if it's temporary.

LE: One chart I find pretty good is: https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/gasoline_prices/Europe/ (just make sure you set price to EUR)

The price of a HDD is ridiculously low compared to SSD of similar size.

I thought that this is obvious enough to not state it Cheesy

The noise produced by HDD is actually quite overstated most of the time and it is barely audible.

Then maybe I'm wrong. The HDD I use for blockchain is more than 12 years old, it's a WD Black and it's pretty noisy.

Regarding the cooling required for RPi4, I ran into some throttling with RPi4 during synchronization and slapped a heatsink, which more or less solved the issue. Active cooling wasn't really necessary in my case. Never really an issue with the previous revisions though (7w vs 5w). It is still painfully slow regardless.

The "painfully slow" part is indeed useful (I'd guess though that it happens in the initial sync, or when it's a couple days behind), but I was more curious if anybody had the (expectedly bad) experience with lower spec Pi (3,2,1, or even Zero).
3645  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 13 Facts You Never Knew About Bitcoin And it's Forum on: May 23, 2022, 09:39:16 AM
2. The highest price 1 Bitcoin has ever cost (A.T.H) is $68,789 November 12th 2021

The ATH was on Nov 10, not 12th.
The ATH was $69,000 on Bitstamp and differs from exchange to exchange. Coingecko lists $69,044.77 as ATH, but it's not stating the exchange where they've got that number from.

Also, as said, CZ is just another businessman. He's not that iconic for Bitcoin, and because of pseudoanonymous nature of Bitcoin we just cannot know certainly who is the richest person alive, hence that entry should go away.
On the other hand, Hal, as first tx recipient, would look better in your list.

8. There are only 21 million Bitcoin that can ever be circulated, of which the last Bitcoin will be mined in 2140

You should add "roughly" or "almost" in there, since 21M won't exactly be touched.

10. A pizza purchase was the first commercial Bitcoin transaction, when Lazzlo Hanyeoz paid 10,000 BTC for two Pizzas worth $41 at the time May 22nd 2010

Please double-check names when posting and avoid embarrassing errors. It's Laszlo Hanyecz.
3646  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: First mixer sanctioned by US authorities (blender.io) on: May 23, 2022, 09:20:37 AM
So I can't help but chuckle at the chipmixer sig posts, sorry! .... So guys.. Is chipmixer is next? Tongue Huh  Roll Eyes

"Due to recent events ChipMixer is available only on Tor network.

Clearnet has a constant list of malicious clones that fight against Chipmixer. That goes from cloning the website and going good ranks in search results to reporting Chimpnixer itself (to Google) for copyright infringement and most probably also DDoS and such attacks.
That's not the government, I hope you can agree on that.
3647  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Consolidation of mixed outputs on: May 23, 2022, 09:15:37 AM
Or, how about a variation of LoyceV's suggestion: Instead of holding a "lottery", all dust (where dust is defined to be anything below 10000 satoshis)  could be detected by  the Bitcoin Core wallet and auto-spent to one of Satoshi's addresses (since we know that he will never return, it won't be spent).
Two downsides to this: It still clogs up the UTXO set each node has to keep with a bunch of dust outputs, and they eventually will be spent when quantum computing advance to a sufficient degree to break the ECDLP and all the early P2PK addresses become vulnerable. A better option would be to simply add on any dust to the fee. Then it creates no unnecessary UTXOs, and at least it goes to honest miners rather than some future dishonest criminal. If you really wanted to burn the dust instead, then an OP_RETURN output is both unspendable and does not add to the UTXO set.

I find a proper burn address (like 1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE) already a better choice than Satoshi's.
But yes, that means unnecessary tx if one wants to burn and the other 2 options are much much better.
3648  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Cheap Node Self Hosting: Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD on: May 23, 2022, 09:04:59 AM
2) Yes you can download the entire blockchain and run a node on a 500GB drive. But you WILL run out of space and then probably have corruption and then have to buy a larger drive and start again. And you might not even be able to copy the data from the old drive if the corruption was bad enough.

It's a very informative post, thank you very much for it. I did intend to "cut corners" and see whether it would work (and also how badly!) with the intention to just use the (few) hardware I have at hand.
Luckily I didn't have the time for the setup, so, again, this helps me a lot.

I will also vouch for the 500GB HDD "approach" problem. Right now my setup works with an external 500GB HDD for the blockchain and I already got rid of txindex in order to make sure it doesn't suddenly stop because of the lack of space (and that hurts badly my local block explorer, obviously).

Of course, one of my problems was that I've thought late to make myself a local setup and RasPi are overly expensive for now, so I'll keep the current setup (that unfortunately doesn't run 24/7), but I still have to look for a HDD soon.

You can buy low space SSD for OS which is cheaper than buying 1TB SSD and you can split them with HDD for blockchains just to improve the syncing process.

That's correct. Even more, if you have another high spec computer (with SSD), you can use that one for the initial sync and just use HDD (some temporary symlinks to SSD and copying of files will be needed though).
While a normal spec is great, I think that SSD can be seen a bit "overzealous" by those very careful with the costs.
But: SSD is silent, HDD is not. SSD is probably much more energy efficient. So one has to make his choice properly for the long run.

PS: is there any info available about how much heating a RasPi do if used as a node? I fear that anything under RasPi 4 may need active cooling too (again, noise...)
3649  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Signing transactions in Electrum hot wallet while temporarily offline on: May 23, 2022, 07:28:27 AM
It's certainly tricky understanding how all this stuff works and no doubt I've misunderstood some things, but I'm pretty clear about what a hardware wallet is.

I tried to help, not to preach. If I was wrong in my assumptions on your knowledge, even better for you.

My trouble, as you've probably gathered by now, is understanding why private keys in desktop hot wallets are being exposed to the internet unnecessarily, when the signing for these transactions is done on the computer not on the internet

If your computer is infected, that software can easily use any change it gets to "send home" everything is was programmed to, from keystrokes to files or screen captures.
So if you use a hot wallet, no matter it goes online 5 seconds or 24/7, it's a hot wallet and it brings risks. It's not only the signing itself that exposes you; usually it's already the fact you've entered the password of your wallet into a potentially infected computer that will ever get online. I've said "usually" for the password, since some use Electrum 2FA which can be a bit safer in this use case.
If you are strictly speaking about what inside you computer's memory, iirc Electrum even had in the past some vulnerability for keeping some things unnecessarily in memory and something that could allow attacker read that in a way or another, but I don't know the exact details.

What is "internet" after all? Browser runs in your computer memory, not "on the internet". Malware runs on your computer, not on the internet and once you've got online, the malware can start "talking" with its "master" and before you know it, all the private data is gone. Sorry if I tell you things you already know.

Of course, if you are indeed capable of keeping your computer clean, then all this doesn't matter. But most people tend to overestimate their capabilities on the matter.

3650  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Sending BTC To Gambling Site Time Range Question? on: May 23, 2022, 06:55:42 AM
Wait so when people have issues with restoring their wallet because of them having more than one btc account... such as main btc account... spending btc account... the reason is when they restore it, they are restoring it on another software wallet like electrum or something?

I think so. I don't know if they had the same problem with LL, but, as I said, some have given up LL exactly because LL has bugs too.
Also, this kind of problems have happened in the past, I don't know if it's still the case, but I would still be cautious, especially as imho adding more (Bitcoin!) accounts doesn't seem to bring real benefits (at least not to me).

Do people have issues when they want to restore their coins with another nano ledger they bought?  Have there been cases of issues like that?  Because i meant just restoring it on say another nano ledger s or x or s plus etc.

I don't know. I don't think that restoring on another HW is something that happens often.

Heard of the derivation path but don't know anything about it.  But do people even know about it?

The vast majority doesn't. Also I think that most software hides that, since it can be seen as advanced info.

Did they ask you what derivative path you want to choose when setting up the nano ledger?

Nope.

When you set up other accounts such as coins that are not supported by ledger live, do you need to know the derivation path?

Other account can also mean another Bitcoin account. I didn't talk at all about other coins. And no, afaik derivation paths are not shown, nor asked in LL.

When you set up other accounts such as coins that are not supported by ledger live, do you need to know the derivation path? Do you install other coins on your nano ledger that is not supported by ledger live?

Since LL is the software to install apps on the HW, how could one install unsupported apps (i.e. unsupported coins)?!

Dar nu-i bai, are balta peste Smiley

I think Satoshi Nakamoto took two things into consideration when creating Bitcoin, so no one could easily manipulate the safety / price of it:

Most probably he did have a good thought on it, but it may have been some luck involved too. For example I think that he didn't foresee what ASICs will do to Bitcoin (and its price).
After all, he was sincere:

I'm sure that in 20 years there will either be very large transaction volume or no volume.

A big lesson
Do you know your Bitcoin asset can worth more than you could ever image in time? Hodl and buy more since price is down and await the future to decide.
 I'm a Bitcoin optimist!

Bitcoin is money. The money has to flow. Without people using Bitcoin to pay for goods and services we would not be here.
So you're wrong. Badly and maybe selfishly too, in a twisted way.
My opinion is that one should always spend some and keep some. Like with every kind of money. Make use of your money in any form, don't exaggerate, but also don't look back on what would that worth now.
If you don't do this you may end up dying with the regret of being maybe even rich for no use, since you lived your life as poor man.
3657  Economy / Economics / Re: Covid omicron version 2.0 monkeypox coming and markets on: May 22, 2022, 04:02:46 PM
Needless to say its bullish for markets we gona have more stimulus and even more lower rates.
Off course lock downs....but ask youserlf do you want to get btc to 100k or meet with your friends and enjoy freedom.
Off course we want money becouse later its more fun with friends and with MONEY Wink
So i welcome the moneypox im not scared becouse i know its good for the markets.

I don't know where you get your "topics" from, but something looks very wrong in that "world" of yours.
Monkeypox is nowhere near the first waves of COVID; monkeypox doesn't have the potential for lock downs and more drama.

Even more, one has to have very badly broken inner compass if he wants to see his money grow, no matter if people around him are dying.
Plus, you are newbie, so I will not be as harsh as you'd deserve (maybe I'm also in a good mood because of Pizza Day), so I'll just say that Bitcoin price goes up and down with or without worldwide problems. If there will be drama on monkeypox, sooner or latter it won't matter for bitcoin price.

Mu-i dadusem asa atentie, vazand ca e Doge.

Nici celelalte premii nu lasa de dorit. Si setul acela "be your own bank" este dragut.

Corect!

Chiar ma intrebam daca va aparea vreun concurs cu ocazia Pizza Day Smiley Si s-ar putea sa mai apara astazi si altele, cine stie. Sa fim vigilenti!

Tocmai am gasit un concurs nou, il prezint aici; locurile sunt putine:

Se castiga 3x Ballet 100 sat, 1x Ballet 1000 sat, in total 4 castigatori. Sunt goale, dar tot sunt superbe.
