3641  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 owners DO NOT upgrade firmware to 2019 version, you will lose SSH access!!! on: April 23, 2019, 02:00:19 AM
You can always try to revert to an older firmware:

https://support.bitmain.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019493654-S9-series-S9-S9i-S9j-S9-Hydro-Control-Board-Program-Recovery

Standard disclaimer: If you are not sure what you are doing don't do it. If you mess it up and brick your miner don't yell at me. You are doing this at your own risk.

I don't really like that information offsite so I'll paste it here:

Quote from: Jocelyn
S9 series (S9, S9i, S9j, S9 Hydro) Control Board Program Recovery

This method applies to the following situations:

  • The miner is power-off in the upgrading process.
  • The miner cannot start (cannot find IP).
  • The miner can only use the default factory workers.

Tools required:

  • The MicroSD card recommended capacity of less than 16GB. Larger capacity MicroSD cards are not recommended as they are very susceptible to errors.
  • A computer running Windows XP or later
  • Card reader

Software required:

We use the same image as T9+. Download Link: https://service.bitmain.com/support/download

On the left sidebar click "Flashing SD Card With Image>>Tools and Instructions to Image SD Card. Scroll up to the page and find t9+-SD Tools.zip. Load t9+-SD Tools.zip to your computer in a convenient file location.

Flashing Instructions :

  • Remove control board from miner assembly.
  • Know your control board model and enable it to flash using the SD card. (See three types of control boards explanation below)
  • Insert MicroSD card into computer and format to FAT32.
  • Unzip the downloaded  t9+-SD Tools.zip and copy the contents to the MicroSD card.
  • Insert the MicroSD card into the card slot on the control board
  • Power on the control board. Allow at least 90 seconds for the files to load automatically. When loaded, the red and green indicator lights on the control board will blink.
  • Power on the control board and access the miner interface. Go to the Upgrade page and Uncheck “Keep Settings”. Flash the firmware and run the miner for 20 minutes.

Note that there are three types of control boards and each of them requires a different way to enable flashing.

1. One complete board such as model CRT0401, CRT0402.
To enable it to flash using SD card, you need to shift the JP4 jumper to the right as shown below.

After flashing completed, power off the control board and shift the JP4 jumper back to the original position.

2. Double boards such as model CRT0302.
To enable it to flash using SD card, you need to shortcircuit the AB as shown in the picture below.

3. Boards without SD card slot such as model CRT0301
It doesn't support SD card flashing.

Possible solutions to solve the flashing failure

1. Reformat the TF and make sure you've copied the correct firmware.
2. Press the TF softly to ensure it's well attached.
3. Dust and clean the TF.
4. Try with another good known TF.

Note: TF card = MicroSD card. This was coined in China to avoid paying Sandisk...

BTW: Moving the JP4 jumper is the same method you can use to boot Braiins OS without flashing it into NAND (ie. for safely testing it).
3642  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S15 with latest firmware consumes 1900W in lower temp env of 24C on: April 23, 2019, 01:09:42 AM
Is there any modded firmware for the S15?

It is a shame this situation is extending to all their products, but i learned about it first with the S15 when someone announced defeating the "security feature". Now the question is, can the S15 be made to boot from an sd?

OP sadly made the mistake of upgrading the firmware, but Bitmain has removed him the chance to revert back.
3643  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Night Mode When Browsing on: April 22, 2019, 06:44:30 PM
I have been using Stylus* to achieve the very same thing for years. Its simply enforcing your CSS over the site. And this allows for very creative things, and even fixing flaws.

In stylus you can use custom styles for the site you are viewing, or "global" styles to achieve a web wide effect (or combine them). Right now im using one called "Pseudo brightness", its like dialing down the brightness of your monitor, which is great at certain hours of the day but not when things get really bright in the ambient. For the rare occasion I'm in darkness, such as a gaming session or such, i have darker styles at hand.

This style is called "Bitcointalk Night", made by "lastuser".

* Yes Stylus is a fork of Stylish, you want to avoid the original Stylish as it was taken by some company to monetize it ad-nausea...
3644  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Capitalism vs. Socialism - Make your argument here. on: April 22, 2019, 05:50:09 PM
Capitalism is the degradation of society , the way to the slave system, smart people will not be able to get an education, will be distinguished from the disease,

Socialism is human development , smart people will lead the rest of the people and develop humanity, even if you were born in a poor family socialism will give you the opportunity to get a good education in order that you could realize yourself

Excellent to have a honest socialist. Its all about control, coerced control. You obey or else... Socialism is the opposite to freedom, pure and simple.

In a free market you live in freedom, you can exploit but you can also give on your own will, without someone pointing a gun at you. Of course, that means one type of society is more mature than the other, and its not exactly the socialist one...

Let me debunk the lie of inequality. Is inequality bad? NO. You don't care the 1% is richer than the 99%, but that the poorest of those 99% still have  better lives than the majority of "equal" societies ruled by an iron fist or a dystopian police state, like socialism produces in the end (see east Germany).

Socialism wants control of the means of production (and the economy). Do not be fooled by any sweet words, it is about coercion. "Humans are egoist so they must be coerced into sharing", is what they are deep thinking. They come with a thousand excuses to justify this exploitation on a state level, and even try to paint it a "democratic" face, but its all about obeying the leader, and in some extreme cases, paying cult (and tribute, of course).

And this also means, no leader can ever be questioned, because you are an enemy "of the people" for daring to question him or the party or the ideology. Then corruption creeps in and now everything is in hand of corrupt bureaucrats which will burn the last bit of wealth by managing somehow to do nothing for the people they collected that money for...

Let me tell you, this is one of the worst systems ever devised by man, and its so scary because you only get it once you are trapped in it.

"Capitalism" may lead to injustice. Yes, because you have the freedom to do the good and the bad, but in socialism, you will either do "the bad" or you won't be able to survive.

A free market economy is power directly in the hands of the people. You cast a vote with your wallet on every single purchase. This is a decentralized system which scales to the last individual member of society with grace and elegance, producing information real time and adjusted to the situation of everyone.

In socialism this power is snatched away from the hands to the people and given to a small select few who suddenly decides who eats and who doesn't. Who is going to question these decision makers when tomorrow you risk not getting food or worse?

This "select elite" can never replace a free market economy. They can't get the information fast and well enough, they can't process the amount information needed in the required time, they can't ensure the resources allocated reach their intended recipients, they can't come with a solution that works well for every single person at every single moment either, etc, etc. In it terms, its centralized, and un-scalable.

In our context, one way to understand socialism is centralization, with all its risks and weaknesses, and injustice, oh the injustice. Of course, everyone gets the same level of injustice under socialism, except those close to the rulers, that is... Socialism makes monarchies look tame.
3645  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2019 BITCOIN Price? on: April 22, 2019, 05:17:07 PM
Bitcoin this year will fall more than once and then rise again. I do not expect the resumption of the bull market in the near future, real growth will be observed in the first half of 2020.

This is true especially if it goes up too fast, the more calm it remains the less chance for this to happen.

So you think it will go up before the halving, because of the halving itself, or are you thinking in something else?
3646  Economy / Speculation / Re: ‘In Crypto We Trust’: Circle CEO Pumps Blockchain at IMF Meeting on: April 22, 2019, 05:13:18 PM
Isn't the USDC token from them? Wouldn't he be meaning USDC when mentioning “Money and Payments in the Digital Age”? Of course like the other stablecoins you would need to pay the fee in the coin's blockchain its running from, so its also a poor substitute.

Want to send some usdc? did you add enough eth in your wallet first? Nope, not going to work...
3647  Economy / Economics / Re: Very stable BTC dominance on: April 22, 2019, 03:39:48 PM
Since the dump from 6500$ (and actually since sept.) btc dominance has been very stable, around 53%.
However it appears previous bear market phases always had an impact on the indicator.

How do you explains this at all?

/edit: details
Since september Bitcoin went from $6500 to $5500
Then 5500 to 4200
Then 4200 to 3700
Then 3700 to 4300
Then 4300 to 3300

BTC and the whole cryptomarket are falling absolutely proportionately. It remains at 53%
Previously it wasn't the case. Dec 13 it fell from 96% to 87%. Strong movements in the markets pretty much always translated in a different dominance afterwards.

Note that the absolute value of btc dominance (53%), high/low, is not my point at all.
Also speculations on BTC aren't the point, it's only about understanding the current stability of btc dominance, if it has any meaning.

I have seen the same pattern before, this is nothing new. When bitcoin goes up, the alts go up. When bitcoin goes down, the alts go down. Bitcoin being stronger, pulls them all around, but them on their own being weaker, won't pull bitcoin very much. Of course within this pulling and pushing, their relative prices fluctuate and this is where some traders make profits from. The simple delay can signal them.

But yes in time bitcoin price is going to fluctuate less, we are talking about decades here so don't get too much expectation. Do note that "stable" doesn't mean 1:1 with the USD, they are naturally going the opposite direction in more predictable rates. You know they like to inflate the USD at or near 2% per year, so that's the very least BTC should be gaining against it. Any coin pegged to the USD is also artificially inflating with them (as with all fiats).

You can clearly see the increase of value in bitcoin's life, this looks like a logarithmic curve, it goes up very fast in the beginning but tends to slow down with time. The opposite is the exponential curve as always seen with hyperinflation, starts very slow and goes up faster and faster later...

3648  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: USDT news: is it for attack or defense? on: April 22, 2019, 03:05:12 PM
Tether is (and the others are) cumbersome to use beyond the confines of an exchange. I have come to the conclusion there is nothing to expect from these "stablecoins" until they can make one with its very own blockchain.

So yeah, useful for trading pairs, but nothing else.
3649  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer ducting on: April 22, 2019, 11:41:19 AM
Is there a particular length recommended for the ducting? Are supplemental fans required to help make up for the resistance (think breathing through a straw vs freely)? Also, how much space around the ASIC should I leave inside the box?

Many thanks
potificate

You'll have to monitor the temperatures or measure the cfm at the ends to find out. I guess if they are long enough you would indeed need supplemental inline fans, it depends on setup. Also you don't have to go with 6", you could go bigger and that might help, or twin, etc.

Please try to make sure there is airflow around the miner as well.

Trump security adviser unveils new U.S. sanctions to pressure Cuba, Venezuela

Quote
MIAMI (Reuters) - U.S. national security adviser John Bolton announced a series of new sanctions against Cuba and Venezuela on Wednesday as the Trump administration sought to boost pressure on Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and the countries that support him.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-venezuela-politics-bolton/trump-security-adviser-bolton-unveils-new-u-s-sanctions-to-pressure-cuba-idUSKCN1RT29X

Do you think that the pressure on Maduro will be that effective? And what does it mean to Venezuelans who's into bitcoin already? Will this sanctions be another use case how bitcoin is really going to be used a medium of exchange?

Last February I posted this one Bitcoin Trading In Venezuela Keeps Setting New Records and it seems this trend will continue.

Unfortunately i don't think those sanctions are very effective, they are probably hurting the regime but its the people who end hurt the most. Something more substantial, like ordering their capture would move things forward. He should be getting trialed at the Hague tribunal with his close associates. They already accepted and are studying the case, but this moves at a snail pace...

Illegally, Maduro recently sold a lot of Venezuelan gold to the Russians, bypassing all the sanctions in place. This money isn't going to fix the inoperative health system or the vandalized education system, its fat money for more corruption, and crime. And the military are now trafficking newer types of minerals such as coltan or thorium, not just gold...

Its the people that loses power, water, food, medicine, education, security. The leading elite has it all, no Maduro minister is ever seen using public transport or doing grocery at a supermarket with the rest of the population, much less risk their lives in a "hospital" or walk on the streets without armed bodyguards. The truth of socialism always shows in the end, history is merely repeating itself.

Crypto trading is done to: escape hyperinflation, and evade State controls on the exchange of foreign currencies. People here are not holding to them, and can't use them to buy things, so its always exchanged back at the last minute. This is why you see so many transactions, while many in the world are content with simply buy or sell, here is always both operations or more due to the ridiculous limitations imposed to the banks by the de-facto gov What for you could be a single buy and sell operation here it could easily take 10 or more, because the limitations force to use very small amounts to avoid getting their accounts frozen (in the banks, not the exchange).
3651  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is urgent. Argentina is printing free money too on: April 21, 2019, 08:42:58 PM
The third world countries like Argentina and Venezuela and Zimbabwe have to take desperate measures to save their economies, but they are just digging the hole deeper for their own demise.  Angry
The desperate measure here could be to legalize Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies overall thereby providing all of their citizens an alternative mode of payment which could possibly improve their economic condition.

This would help drive adoption higher too which is why this would be a win-win situation.

That and adopting Austrian economics (such as full reserve banking) else the scare mongers will point at how a deflationary coin is ruining the economy instead. To go deflationary, you must also follow Austrian economics. Argentina like most other countries has only seen the Chicago economics, which is the prevailing one worldwide, and the cause of eternal bubble and crash cycles. Socialists love to lie by pointing at this flawed school and portraying themselves as the only solution, because the free market is at fault, while the reality is that the Chicago school (and the Keynesians before) are at fault, not a truly free market.

Once the people learn about the Austrian school of economy, no socialist lie will ever prevail again. This is what Macri and all others need, no more populism or socialist traps that would only ruin it all as it always does.
3652  Economy / Economics / Re: On stablecoins on: April 21, 2019, 08:28:54 PM
If you don't know what stablecoins are, read this Wiki article

With that read, there is an ongoing dispute over the advantages of these coins before Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Many suggest that they are not actually backed up by real currencies or other assets as the companies behind them vigorously claim, that they are centralized beyond any hope, and without proper audits they can be printed out of thin air just like fiat money, which would culminate in their hyperinflation, devaluation and failure

For simplicity's sake, let's assume that these accusations are unfounded. So do these coins have any advantages compared to Bitcoin under given assumptions? In these conditions stablecoins essentially become fiat that they are representing, i.e. the US dollar, Euro, or whatever. So the whole thing is not so much about some stablecoin versus Bitcoin but rather a good old question of a fiat currency versus a cryptocurrency

And I guess you already know the answer to that question

Well i can tell you right now another disadvantage they have is that they are tokens using someone else's blockchain. So even if you get a wallet, you still need two different coins in it, the stablecoin itself and the coin of the blockchain it operates with to pay tx fees.

With Tether its more confusing, because there are 3 variations that work on 3 different blockchains: Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron. The others are all ERC-20 so just Ethereum (gas). You need both coins in your wallet to move a transaction, that is not user friendly.

For the time being they appear to be intended to be used inside an exchange as hedge in trading or such, but not directly like you would use any other crypto...
3653  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is urgent. Argentina is printing free money too on: April 21, 2019, 10:47:23 AM
After the Fed, ECB, BoJ and PBoC printed over U$ 300 trillion in debt (free money because this debt will never get paid) now non-reserve currency countries want to join the party too.

Argentina is printing free money for their own purposes: https://twitter.com/dlacalle_IA/status/1119660655005634565
"The big guys are doing it, why can't we do it too?"
Why does the US get to print money to save their banks? Why does China pump their stock market by printing more money whenever the stocks dip?
This may be the beginning of the new crash: every country out there decides they want to do quantitative easing too.
US banks got bailed out, why can't governments get bailed out?

Quote from: Daniel Lacalle
The Argentina case should be a serious warning for those defending "printing money to finance government spending".
If thats the warning then what is Venezuela? Argentina WAS bailed out, without anyone expecting it, back in the 2000s by none other than Hugo Chávez, who literally saved Argentina when she was defaulting on her debt and no one wanted their bonds. Chávez ordered a massive buyout (using Venezuela's money, mostly from State oil PDVSA and taxpayers) to help his friend Kirchner, and the bonds suddenly soared so high that Kirchner sold them and paid the entirety of the then Argentina's debt with it.

But then socialist policies came and wasted all the money again, and now nobody bails Venezuela which is in a far worse position and for a far longer time now. 60% yearly inflation? try a million and see if you like living with 5 USD a month, that's the Venezuela where a de-facto government INSISTS in financing all the insane socialist spending by adding money digitally (because printing banknotes is too expensive in this day and age).

I don't understand how someone like Macri who is a businessman would agree to fall into this trap. If you can't pay your bills start shrinking that State, sell what needs to he sold and re-float the country like you would with a company in red. If he lets the socialist thinking prevail, Argentina will have a much grimmer future, just look at Venezuela.

Which is McAfee's user account in this forum made by Satoshi? He wasn't even here, how could he even claim to know when there is people here who actually talked with Satoshi and still don't know who he/she/they are.

Satoshi's identity will remain a mystery forever.
3655  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is downloading money into your PC on: April 21, 2019, 06:05:37 AM
I understand the intention but the analogy is flawed. The bitcoins live in the blockchain, it would be more correct to say, "the cloud". Wallets are, not really wallets, they never hold money. What they hold is keys that let you in control of such money. Therefore a wallet is like a terminal for a remote computer. When you get bitcoin, you are simply given control of them.

Because of this, losing the wallet never loses the money, it only loses the keys that let you control it. So if you have "backup keys", you can still control them using a brand new wallet just fine, unlike a real wallet with money that gets lost.
3656  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why We Need Women In Blockchain on: April 21, 2019, 04:50:43 AM
Well, the logic is simple, women don't risk that much compared to men because they always wanted to be secured. The reason why is that most of the time, women were taken advantage and fooled by the people.
If women are committed to the blockchain, it means that blockchain has earned enough security to convince women nature of judgment in security. If a woman joined blockchain, it doesn't mean that they are pro-feminist. I am a woman and I know that I am talking about!

I will leave this video here for reference. It does agree with you:

3657  Economy / Economics / Re: Will the next economic collapse trigger massive crypto adoption? on: April 21, 2019, 04:11:41 AM
Look at Venezuela and Zimbabwe or any other country with crumbling economy - do they have mass crypto adoption? The answer is no, even though the crypto media like to report how Bitcoin is saving lives there, it's still only a very small percentage of the population that is using it, and the government is quite aware of it and takes steps to stop it - in Venezuela they've released Petro, tried to outlaw Bitcoin, police robs miners and so on.

We did not adopt it, but some of us are using it either to take refugee from garbage fiat, or to get access from to foreign currency. Petro failed due to its absolute centralized nature (and empty promises by a gov most of the world doesn't recognize anymore). The police is corrupt and criminal, laws are irrelevant. Mining wasn't illegal when they started extorting, kidnapping and ransoming miners, they simply did it to obtain money. No one can go against the police or the military, there is no rule of law and it only matters how closely tied you are to the de-facto gov. If they hate you, they simply fabricate anything and you can do absolutely nothing about it. A medieval court would probably be more fair than whats left of the justice system here...

Crypto probably IS saving lives, but its not being widely adopted, sadly. Zimbawe after years of Mugabe's stubbornness, finally lost its fiat. It is very similar to what is going on here; but instead of crypto they adopted the USD as national currency. Politicians are incredibly idiotic regarding economy, their absolute lack of understanding the most basic concepts is baffling. They think supply & demand to be sort of "ideological" myth... It is THAT bad.

3659  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 owners DO NOT upgrade firmware to 2019 version, you will lose SSH access!!! on: April 21, 2019, 02:56:08 AM
The good news is that there is going to be a method to boot Braiins OS from an sd card, and then while that is running, flash the controller's NAND storage from it so you could then take out the card move the jumper back and keep running Braiins OS. THEN, you could use the bOS to factory procedure to go back to an older factory release. A bit convoluted, but a solution none the less.

While its technically possible to do it right now, it is undocumented so please wait for future bOS releases that will document and expose this new install method in their UI.

Here are some tidbits, but please don't try it yet by yourself, you don't want a brick!

Quote from: Jan Čapek
For the time being, there is a workaround. We DO have a utility call bos2bos.py. It is intended for development purposes. However, it is able to remotely flash a machine that is running bOS SD card to a NAND version.

We will include this anti-evil feature into April/May update

So be patient that once again the free open source community is bringing out a solution.
