We are not jumping,
We're from Moscow.

A joke on the Maidan slogan "Those not jumping are for Moscow"
(by the way, a nice response to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0ahMfodiIk)

I just cam to think... There is a very succinct Russian saying: "Допрыгались" ("Now you've jumped to the end", in the meaning "now, you've done it"), which is very appropriate to that slogan and where it lead.

While that is true, the corruption was not so "in your face", not so obvious. You would give a box of chocolates to a teacher from time to time, but you weren't expected to do so and definitely not giving money. Nowadays you can barely expect to get medical service unless you pay double of what is in the price list.
(And yes, I lived there. Didn't see much of the corruption unless you really needed to have something done high up in the food chain.)

try zerohedge.com

Yes. I regularly visit that site. But they don't have any news videos.

Well, there's this one:
https://www.youtube.com/user/RussiaToday

You also have some video reports here:
http://voiceofrussia.com/

But I have to agree, there are not that many English-language news channels coming from Russia.
3665  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Meanwhile in Ukraine... Revolution. on: April 07, 2014, 03:38:06 PM
...What this has to do with the Ukraine thread?

Exactly!

So leave Europe alone. And like I said, go put your money where your mouth is, and go fight against the US directly!

What is it with Americans and fighting? Can't you ever..., I don't know... talk?

No one's touching Europe. Someone (and I will not be saying the A-word) has dumped (cookie'ed) a huge political problem on Russia's border and is now blaming Russia.

Have Americans actually asked about how common people in Europe feel about having US military bases on their land.

No? Exactly!

I saw some unfavourable opinion polls in Germany.

So leave Europe alone.

PS: I think US has an overinflated view of self-importance and feels like everyone wants to pick a fight with them, which, in most cases, is not so. After the disintegration of Soviet Union, most Russians (up to 80%) viewed US as a friend or, at least, an ally. That number diminished after bombing of Yugoslavia, and continued diminishing as NATO bases crawled closer and closer to Russian borders, and rocket "shields" got erected. You can't keep feeling benign towards someone, when that someone rattles sabres. Current positive US rating in Russia lies at about 10%
3666  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ukraine rejects Russia Gazprom gas price hike on: April 07, 2014, 03:21:52 PM
Who's paying you meat-heads to sit on this forum all day, every day, spreading shit? The Russian government?

You might be surprised by the number of people who are not buying into Western media propaganda. Just because the West needs to pay for allies, no need to project that notion on the rest. Wink

a)
Where did he say that?

Then go sort your shit out with the US directly. Leave Europe alone.
I volunteer you to be one of the soldiers invading US soil. Good luck!

That's what Russia does not want to do - invade and have Europe invaded.

By the way, sorry to interrupt the Russian circle-jerk in this thread. Carry on, gentlemen!

Thank you.

The next move in this game of chess is waiting to be made. Putin has been placed into a difficult position of "damned if you do, damned if you don't". If Kiev decides to use excessive force against South-East, and Putin moves Russian troops in as a peace-keeping force, then the West will cry "invasion", and if he does not, he faces a political suicide inside Russia with potential civil unrest for abandoning "leaving our people behind".

It all depends on the next move from Washington via Kiev.
3668  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Meanwhile in Ukraine... Revolution. on: April 07, 2014, 01:22:40 PM
Hmm. Russian internet newspaper seems a bit too eager:
http://www.gazeta.ru/politics/news/2014/04/07/n_6065953.shtml

Stating that the referendum is about joining of Donetsk Republic with Russia (instead of the question of its independence), and saying that the interim government asked Putin for peace-keeping forces (omitting the mention that is should be done only in case of violence from Kiev).

I don't like the feel of the information fog...
3669  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Meanwhile in Ukraine... Revolution. on: April 07, 2014, 11:52:58 AM
Now they are electing representatives of another cities in the donetsk region, it's planned to replace a local government with these representatives, create a republic of Donetsk and announce referendum on independence. Will see...

Rather than concentrating on the 3 far-eastern provinces, they should also make sure that the Southern oblasts like Kherson and Odessa also conducts referendum.

One step at a time. Smiley
Odessa, founded by Empress Catherine the Great in 1794 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odessa) and it's not improbable that Odessa and Novorossija will be returning home as well.
On the other hand, Odessa, which since the imperial times was a freeport, has a more diverse and independent population and might choose their own way forward. A City-State of Odessa, anyone?

Obama calls Putin:
- Vladimir, your actions in Donetsk violate international law.
- Barak, on the Russian maps we renamed Alaska. Alaska now called ice-Crimea.
- Ice cream? or ... You're kidding me? You want my death? I turned gray because of you! If you take the South-Eastern Ukraine, I will introduce more sanctions against 15 officials!
- Agreed.
- I hate you.
- Loser.

As for the number of activists:
There was talk about a couple thousand people in each of the cities.

P.S. I would prefer to vote for Darth Vader, but his registration attempt was rejected  Angry

Darth Vader filed a court case on the election committee, citing his removal from presidential election run uncosntitutional:

In one of reader comments, I read that Darth is the only candidate that can be acceptable to both the Eastern and Western regions of the country.

Seriously, Ukrainians need to re take Kiev by any means and ask Russia for help. (no need to be part of russia if they don't want to but can be very strong allies so no one mess with Ukraine again) The usa and the EU only wants to use Ukraine for strategic purposes and the gas / power pipelines control,, BUT seems they lost interest because Crimea (power pipelines control) got annexed with Russia

Alas, I think I'd have to agree. It's becoming one of the most religiously brainwashed countries. But then again, communism, was just another religionism, and it had to be replaced by something... Some new opium for the masses.

what if prices for eu also rise by 30-80%?? than things would get interessting...

That would entirely depend on the extent of the sanctioned imposed on Russia. The harder Russia feels hit, the harder it'll need to compensate for the loss in other income.

As Merkel talks about "more sanctions", I read some funny comments on Russian forums by Russians along the lines of "would you impose those sanctions already? We are tired of the talking." Smiley

The problem with this economic war is that if it will ever start for real , no matter who wins nor Merkel nor Putin will be affected.
It will be us the average citizen that will get ....in our gas hole.

The sentiment in Russia at the moment, is that sanctions might be good for Russia as a wake-up call to the internal producing economy, which has seen some neglect as of late.

Otherwise, I completely agree with your statement.
3678  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I miss the Soviet Union. on: April 06, 2014, 12:22:33 PM
We have yet to see (real) Capitalism being used properly either.

That is the real problem. The real capitalism is not used anywhere. For example, in the US, it is Socialism being dished out after re branded as Capitalism.

That's the problem with all : socialism , communism , capitalism etc...In theory all sound ok. In real life , humans find a way to f*** it so good you need to invent a new concept.

Say no to "-ism"s!  Grin

‘100% sure Berkut police didn’t shoot people in Kiev’ – ex-Ukrainian interior minister

http://rt.com/news/snipers-ukraine-maidan-berkut-613/

Quote
“Berkut riot police were without their service weapons. On February 18 and 19, 86 police officers were wounded by gunshots. Fourteen of them died. They were internal troops, military, Berkut, and traffic police, who were shot at their post checkpoint,” he said.

...

“It’s clear for any reasonable person that if it were the law enforcement officers who opened fire, they would’ve probably been advancing. That would’ve been the reason to use firearms. Meanwhile, they began retreating after the killing of their troops began,” he said.
