I mine Litecoins as I have a few spare CPU's and it doesn't interfere with bitcoin/namecoin mining. It seems to be the only alt-coin which is legit atm.

Why would you want that? minerd, was originally meant for bitcoin, back when GPUs weren't around. Now that they are, not only is a CPU miner obsolete, it will only suck electricity, and you will literally not gain any bitcoins off of it.
And if you really want a CPU miner, get CGminer, it has that in(since it is originally, minerd).

Well I could use the extra heat in the winter.
But seriously, while the GPUs mining, my CPU is unstressed and feels rather obsolete.
I'll look into CGminer but by the looks of the first post it doesn't appear to be as user friendly as GUIMiner.

I haven't done the math, but I'm thinking you'll make more money mining the cpu chain, LTC for example.  And then selling them for bitcoins, rather than running your CPU to mine bitcoins directly.
That's what i do and what i suggest to do too
3684  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Can i run cgminer in the background? no window? on: January 05, 2012, 12:10:24 PM
Start using a decent antivirus... one reporting a miner as a virus is not a good one

Yup i know. I just reported it for the lulz. Fail defender when it report a safe thing as dangerous

Patience and discipline, just gotta keep telling myself.... and if i'm wrong well... meh

If you're wrong, you just missed the opportunity of a lifetime.

If you're right, well... meh.  It will go up again.

its the former. i lived thru the Spring minute by minute and this is exactly the same, except this time we go further.

Missing an opportunity of a lifetime... I don't know if I could just go meh and forget about it.  Wink

I'm sure a lot of people are already going "meh" about not buying at $5 when they had the chance earlier today. Forget last Oct-Dec..
Expect a lot of threads about whining about the EARLY ADOPTERS "omgomg they bought btc at 2$, it's unfair, now it's 10$!!!!"
3687  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is the fun of getting levels? on: January 05, 2012, 11:53:20 AM

Epic thread is epic

Is network administration overvalued?  How about network security?  By your logic, these professions should not be profitable and perhaps not compensated monetarily?

You have a point actually. Do we really need network administrators for a network that will administer itself? Do we need experts in network security, when the network has it's own self-adaptive defense mechanisms? Networks in the future will have brains and immune systems of their own. They will not need our inefficient help, other than for unskilled manual labour - which may itself not even be required in time. The singularity is near...
Then we will need John Connor

3692  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Increases in bitcoin prices are bad for merchants on: January 04, 2012, 07:55:41 PM
Personally, I spend more bitcoins when the price goes up. Since I bought low, I feel I am getting more value for my money.
^This

Buying is like selling bitcoins. People sell bitcoins when price goes up, mostly. Sure, some apply the buy high sell low rule...
3693  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 04, 2012, 01:10:03 PM
Put an encrypted wallet on the internet (like msn skydrive, send it as mail attached file to other addresses etc)

So you can ALWAYS recover them

Note: with encrypted wallet i mean a wallet encrypted in a good way with a good password.

Windows Defender FAIL, it is telling me diablominer may be a virus and ask me to delete it. Danger level: average

Of course it's a false positive, diablominer is safe, but for MICROSOFT, it isn't.

Program:Win32/BitCoinMiner
Program:MacOS/BitCoinMiner
Program:Linux/BitCoinMiner
Program:Solaris/BitCoinMiner

So much fail.

Also it shows that microsoft consider miners as dangerous software

Protip: bitcoin is not US

US is not the world.
3696  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trusted cellphone/mobile bitcoin client on: January 04, 2012, 12:11:52 PM
Attaching companies to "bitcoin" is not a good idea. Bitcoin is a free thing, if it start getting used by more ppl, it will be because it's useful, not cause of some company name

Or, make a iBitcoin client, stick a white APPLE and problem solved, everyone will rush to use it
3697  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Automatically rescan on: January 04, 2012, 12:07:24 PM
or maybe just a GUI option to rescan?
THIS

but i suppose it require like 6 years of testing + a bounty of over 9000 btc to add a GUI button saying RESCAN
