3681  Economy / Economics / Re: A Crypto Blessing: China’s Plan to Ban Bitcoin Mining Will Work Wonders on: April 19, 2019, 04:58:31 PM
“Bitcoin mining will no longer be dominated by China but become more decentralized,” a Beijing-based cryptocurrency research company analyst Michael Zhong told SCMP, emphasizing that Chinese miners in Yunnan and Sichuan would have to leave.

Just because the mining doesn't physically occur within China doesn't mean it wont remain controlled by the same Chinese actors. This comment is ignorant at best. As long as people keep using Chinese pools, they will keep the power. If you are a miner, you must not mine in:

  • Btc.com Bitmain
  • Antpool Bitmain
  • F2pool
  • Poolin
  • Viabtc Bitmain?
  • BTC.top Bitmain?
  • dpool
  • Huobi

Notably missing from the top used pools is Slushpool which is not Chinese, but represents 10% only.

3682  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 19, 2019, 04:28:13 PM
Yes, this is bad to Venezuela economy not only in cryptocurrency but their economy itself. Usually the industrial sectors are earning or will be productive through the use of machineries run by an electricity. This is the same with cryptocurrency especially if in their are it is widely known. This may decrease crypto market a little bit but it could not compromise the market because no one could sell crypto without power to run their gadgets.

Electricity is essential to all industries. As one of my professor said during college days that electricity is the blood of industry.

The World's Most Miserable Economy Has Seven-Figure Inflation

Unfortunately a decade and a half of "socialism" got rid of most of the national production, 90%+ stopped, went broke or fled the country. Nobody wants to invest in a country where the gov can seize your assets on a whim, and the State itself doesn't produce anything but corruption.

Electricity failing due to neglect on the State electric company, was just the icing on the cake. In the same situation are all basic services, which where all nationalized during Chávez and inherited by Maduro the inept.

It is deeply ironic that a "socialist" gov gives gasoline away for free, but provides no healthcare, no education, not even personal security, nothing. But unlike in a free market economy, you can't find a private solution either...
3683  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Economic and social impacts of BTC - Research ideas on: April 19, 2019, 03:44:25 PM
Hi there BTC community,

This is my first post here.
I'm a part-time researcher who's seeking for some guidance from the BTC community about research(able) topics.
My scientific interests are in a trans-disciplinary area: the social, political and economical impacts of technology in our society.
Therefore, cryptocurrencies, decentralization and fintech are some of the hot topics in my mind right now.
Especially, the impact BTC can have in the future of transparency, corruption, dismantle of status quo, democratic systems, etc.

So, in your opinion, what are the major potential changes BTC will operate in our societies in the next 10 to 20 years?
Which are the the impacts you see as worthy of being scientifically researched?

Thank you in advance for any input you might have to give me.

If politicians were by law required to publish their bitcoin addresses, people would know exactly how much money they are moving. Simillar to declaring assets, but on a realtime basis. Same thing for organizations. Granted, i believe people should also have the right for private addresses, this is simillar to bank accounts, is it your personal account, or your organization account? Organization addresses should be public for everyone to see and audit. Transparency levels like never seen before. Of course blockchain technology could be used for voting, direct democracy, etc.

The economy needs to leans towards Austrian economics. This is because Austrians (Mises et al) had though of going back to gold as currency, in the idea that no government can artificially increase or decrease its value by making them artificially appear out of thin air. Bitcoin is, "digital gold", after all. With the current thinking, Chicago and sometimes Keynesian, things appear to "break" if suddenly people used deflationary money instead of inflationary. But that is only because the current economy was built upon non existent wealth, mainly fractional banking and debt, which is "fast" but also also quick to "pop", producing never ending bubbles and crashes. Austrians don't need bubbles, growth can occur slowly and safely by true accumulation of wealth, which only exists in a full reserve banking system. If you study some Austrian economics, you will see how something like Bitcoin suddenly makes sense and fits in a new world economy. Yes i know some austrians don't exactly like Bitcoin itself (they originally proposed actual gold, after all), but Mises didn't have internet back then. How are we going to buy things with physical ingots online? It ill go into a virtual assets transaction again, and there is simply nothing better than the Bitcoin technology and its blockchain for that.

3684  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do you know hackers use hidden advertisement to get access on your device ? on: April 19, 2019, 02:22:09 PM
I can't remember the last time I ever saw one of these kind of attacks. 10+ years ago now? There are so many good browser add-ons that everyone should be using, that will completely eliminate the chance of such an attack on your device.

First of all, don't use Chrome. It's a privacy nightmare. Choose Tor, Firefox, or Brave instead. Add-ons that you absolutely want include uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, and NoScript. Also strongly consider anti-tracking privacy add-ons like Decentraleyes and Privacy Badger.

This is a climbing hill battle for many in this forum who are already addicted to Chrome, but there is a solution to your die hard habits:

Ungoogled-chromium. First do understand Chrome in fact IS just Chromium with a few extras: (fonts, flash player, pdf reader, drm "widevine", etc).

Also understand that several browsers out there simply use Chromium and then modify it a little bit, such as Opera or Brave. Yes, they all share the same add ons. On most cases you can just type the url chrome://about to find out what Chromium version you are running.

Ungoogled chromium removes all google tie ins, including integration with the "play" store. You can still manually download the extensions and install them, so don't worry about that. Did you notice how Google banned all extensions that allowed downloading content from Youtube? thats just a tip of the iceberg reason of why you wouldn't want Google controlling your browser.

If you go the layman way of simply using Opera or Brave (or any Derivatives), beware that you are shifting your trust from Google, to yet another third party (which might also be colluding with Google anyway).

Now I'm not going to say Firefox is completely clean of annoyances, it isn't. This is why there are also privacy focused mods out there (thanks to being open source). Such example of would be Waterfox vs Firefox, try it and see the difference. Its always good to have a backup browser that uses an entirely different rendering engine, you never know when a page will break with one that works with the other, they still exist.

Ok, back to the topic: Those tips are valid, but are not 100% safe. Many people don't bother blocking scripts, this is a big mistake. While i used to use NoScript in the past, i switched to uMatrix, which is made by the same author of uBlock origin (and both can be safely used together). This is a must, because you don't want random scripts executing when you browse the web. Only white-list trusted sites, and within those, only white-list the actual useful content (ie. not the trackers). This is because, not all exploits "require" for the user to actually click anything and many can be executed without user intervention. Sometimes exploiting browser vulnerabilities, sometimes OS vulnerabilities. So don't feel the least "safe" because you never see a pop up (but block them anyway, most browsers are doing that by default anyway).

Do not underestimate your OS. Microsoft IS jealous of Google, they openly switched to data mining with the release of windows 10. While Chrome can be considered a privacy nightmare, the same is true for windows 10 (in addition to a security nightmare). On a PC (doesn't matter if its an Apple) you should be running Linux or a BSD instead of windows or osx. With smartphones the situation is more grim, and would require their own thread, but you should quickly start dumping any Microsoft and Apple dependencies from your life as soon as possible.

Ask this question: Can you continue your life normally if suddenly company x disappears tomorrow? If you can't, you are in trouble. Break those chains before the chains break you first. It certainly doesn't help them switching to a subscription model. What good is a software that stops working the moment you stop paying or lose internet access? You are supposed to reduce your dependency, not increase it.

A paranoid person wouldn't even bother installing the OS, but keep a privacy oriented live linux iso around that can be used occasionally (such as for creating and managing cold wallets). Especially useful if you are using somebody else's computer.

Does this sound like too much of a bother? That is exactly what the wrongly called "hackers" truly exploit in the end: People's laziness.
3685  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC addresses starting with "3" what are they ? simplified explanation. on: April 19, 2019, 01:30:40 PM
I was also thinking this is a bit overkill for beginners. In fact multi-sig addresses is something most people can ignore completely and might never see for years.

In an ideal world everyone should be using bech32 addresses already, but then you will still have to warn people SegWit addresses might start with a 3 as well as a bc1 for "legacy" reasons.

And what about those legacy Litecoin addresses starting with 3?

From a newbie perspective this is a mess, the definite fix IS bc1 but old wallets can't work with them so "just in case" we still use those starting with 3... But we shouldn't.

True content for this thread would be something along these lines:

TL;DR: Addresses starting with 3 are (very likely) SegWit, but they could rarely be multi-sig and extremely rarely, legacy Litecoin addresses.
Those starting with bc1 are (definitely) Bitcoin SegWit and should be used in most situations unless an outdated wallet or site still won't recognize it as a valid Bitcoin address.
3686  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 18, 2019, 11:18:01 PM
IIRC, the last time a venezuelan govt decided to eliminate the subsidy on gasoline, all hell broke lose. The whole thing triggered a surge in the price of gasoline and public transport fares, venezuelans didn't like that so riots spread throughout the whole country which led to thousand of citizens getting killed in the protests. I read about this a long time ago, this whole event has a name but I can't remember it.

But I think there are other ways to help the venezuelan economy if they want to start in the oil industry, for instance, the privatization of PDVSA, the company in charge of production and exportation of oil.

Caracazo

This stupid taboo caused the ruin of the country. Because of this, the military became more corrupt than ever, decades of corrupt to their root officials unwilling to move a finger against their accomplice De-facto gov. When socialists came they gave them even more means to make money, now they could traffic food and medicine besides gasoline and drugs, and lately precious minerals. The price of all this, is the misery of everybody else.

And it all started by giving the gasoline away for practically free. Socialists extended it to everything else, and everything else became scarce, expensive, and a source of illicit money, and a need to bribe to obtain it solidifying the culture of corruption. Some (old enough) Russians will probably recognize this pattern from the Soviet Union, i'm sure, and their former satellites.

"Caracazo" was over in less than a week, a month later everything was back to normal. The blackout of March alone was far more worse. And people started looting as well, but the socialists deployed their SA style armed irregulars and stopped people gunpoint (and killed some too), along with the armed forces of the military and police.

I also believe that without ending this horrendous subsidy this country will never recover, it is at the core root of the problem. The military will probably attempt to stage a coup because this is the same as taking the drugs from drug traffickers. I also believe all these decades of corruption has irreversibly damaged the military and the police, and should be completely disbanded, and the police redone again, the military is useless. among many other things that politicians don't dare or think to do, this country has no hope.
3687  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 March 4th, 2019 firmware experience? on: April 18, 2019, 06:57:05 PM
@Artemis3

Non of the above factors matters to me as i have totally free power for all my gears, the reason why i never went with BraiinsOS in the first place was the extra time needed to flash all the gears, i also don't know much exactly each s9s consumes with this 2019 firmware, but by looking at the voltage regulators that are installed for some of them its something between 1250w and 1300w more or less.

So technically i have no problem with the 2019 firmware (yet), but as far as the "bounty" goes i would be willing to make a good donation to the first person who break this firmware, tho i am not a big fan when it comes to bounties in such cases, as most of us here provide all kind of information and tools for free, but still if you or anyone else for that matter wants a bounty for it - i will be the first to reward them.

Hmm too bad you didn't ask in the Braiins OS thread. It is possible to install it to all of them using a python script of theirs. AND you can go the other way, overclocking, if you don't care about spending more per hash. 16T or so is possible using the 1600w PSUs or a bit more with the 1800w ones.

I suggest you officially post the bounty offer (Service demand?) in the Services area to get things moving...
3688  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Popularity Soars in Argentina Due to Mass Inflation on: April 18, 2019, 06:17:17 PM
..if argentina government would adoot the use of bitcoin, and make it as their own currency,,would it resolve the inflation rate that takes place on their economy??..it is nice to hear that bitcoin adoptation in argentina takes place but this occurs because of crisis it suffers,,I hope that no other countries will suffer this same situation in order for Bitcoin to be adopted and legalized..

No, the inflation rate on their fiat would go on normally, because adopting bitcoin doesn't magically make the peso "strong". But of course listing things in bitcoin price will make it look that way if you ignore the peso price going up and the bitcoin price going down on the same item.

In a way, it would halt the inflation, because its like telling people to start using gold coins from now on. Argentina can have dual coins, like Peru with the USD, or get rid of the peso entirely but that would probably cause more confusion at first than simply letting both be used for a transitional period at least.

To adopt a "strong" currency (ie. like gold) adopting Austrian economics is a must. You have to get rid of debt asap and force banks to adopt 100% reserve system, and close the central bank because you won't need it anymore. If you only adopt the "strong" currency but keep the rest intact, you might be getting in a worse situation similar to what happened in the 2000ies, because that's was Chicago economics, the one socialists mistakenly call "neo-liberal", Ie. Friedman et al (Growth by debt, instead of growth by "true" accumulation).
3689  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: BFGMiner 5.5.0: CPU/GPU/FPGA/ASIC mining software, GBT+Stratum, RPC, Linux/Win64 on: April 18, 2019, 06:06:00 PM
ok, i'm a new guy to ubuntu.  i'm trying to download and install bfgminer, but all sources related to ubuntu are problematic.  i'm using synaptic for finding and installing programs but when i try to follow the installed programs list, i am having trouble locating an executable file of any sort to run the program.  so i've used synaptic to uninstall and reinstall the program a couple times and anything that has looked like an executable file i've clicked and bfg hasn't started yet.  i've gone to youtube, help.ubuntu.com/community/ExternalGuides, google, and i'm not getting the software to run.

First tell us which version you are running. If you are running a LTS version (which you should, as non LTS Ubuntu is beta quality at best) that is 16.04 or 18.04, there is a PPA provided by LukeJr.

Remove any bfgminer you might have installed using synaptic, then all you have to do is add this PPA and install the package. The instructions would be as follows (in a terminal):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:luke-jr/bfgminer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bfgminer

Then you can run bfgminer at any time from the terminal.
3690  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NK State media: NK tested a "tactical guided weapon" on: April 18, 2019, 01:26:07 PM
Its probably just more internal rhetoric as usual, possibly staged for the "masses" to be kept in check. This is a government whose primary principle is: military power first, and it also happens to be hereditary, not unlike the monarchies of the past.

"NK State media" is redundant. EVERYTHING in NK is State owned. Its a socialist state inspired by Stalin, of which Kim Il Sung (NK's founder) was a big admirer. things went bad when he died, with both China and Russia which were both pissed back then by the Stalinism of Kim.

So they poured everything into the military and had great famines socialism always produces (just like Mao). At the same time building things nobody wanted (such as that spaceship shaped hotel in Pyongyang) while the people remain in eternal poverty and suffering.

But oh, Imperialism™ bad, "communism" good, uh huh... See how well it worked in history: Socialism always does the same, coercion by the state. NK is a perfect example. The people there can only hope for a German style reunification, where the wealth of the south will revitalize the neglected and exploited north. But this can be traumatic at best. Decades of a socialism system does weird things to humans, not unlike what happened to the Soviet Union when it disbanded.
3691  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thailand files complaint against Bitcoin Seasteader on: April 18, 2019, 01:03:45 PM
Death sentence for a Seastead??  Holy shit talk about strict laws.

Perhaps, since Thailand is a Monarchy ruled by a military Junta. I'm not sure a house on a stick warrants such a high penalty, but they might see it as someone defying the "king's sovereignty" or such...

I told him an actual ship was better, it moves, can easily go into international waters... Oh well.

I'm getting very suspicious of all these events and disasters. Now we know that the electrical failure in Venezuela was caused by Washington

Seriously, nobody but you would spit such stupidity. Washington what, Maduro neglected our electric grid. Stop spreading lies about a country you have never even been to... Whats next, haarp produced the earthquake? Your kind seems to never learn, the more you speak these the more a fool you make of yourself.

Of course you don't care a cultural heritage burns, like Mao (and Maduro), you probably dance in happiness when these tragedies occur, what with "the symbols of exploitation", just hold your red book high marching proud, what could ever possibly go wrong when the "new man" comes?
3693  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 18, 2019, 12:40:02 PM
I live near venezuela, and always see bad news coming from this country, that suffers and that we do not have a correction in the crisis, I hope soon it will end, people die and suffer!
very sad to hear your story, even though I don't know exactly, but we can imagine that if the electricity goes down for a few days, it will certainly make it difficult for crypto transactions, and it means that their economy stops

More importantly the water stops, and it takes at least 4 days to recover the water to the city once power comes back...

Guess what the "socialist" gov did for Easter? "To reduce the electric rationing in the country side, the water system for the city won't be electrified during these holidays". Indeed yesterday the whole city went dry (again). We shall see if it takes another demonstration (with the usual deaths caused by the gov goons shooting at them) in front of the presidential palace to make them wake up...

In "socialism", only the vast majority of the people suffers, not the elite in power. Ironic, given their rhetoric, but that is always the result from an ideology based on coercion and "class struggle" rather than freedom and peaceful development.
3694  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Popularity Soars in Argentina Due to Mass Inflation on: April 18, 2019, 12:20:38 PM
in Turkey where im living is going to be same very soon.me and people around me runs to dollar, gold and little of us like me cryptocurrency.if speculations will come true and there will be a global crisis, bitcoin will hit new ath i guess.

Then you have an excellent opportunity to move all your savings before the true crisis hits. When its already late you won't be able to protect most of the value, but now before crisis hits you have the highest chance of keeping most of your savings value (or even increase it if the market favors you).

Don't wait until your economy crashes, it will be too late by then.

Just be smart and learn to use cold wallets, nothing online or plugged is safe enough. But nobody can touch your cold wallets when done correctly. (using the linux live iso method, for example).
3695  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 March 4th, 2019 firmware experience? on: April 18, 2019, 12:09:53 PM
well, they obviously have not offered me that as an "option" , i am aware of this this method, but noway on earth i will waste all that time to flash every s9 , not when the current firmware is running just fine, also given the fact that i have recently disassembled all my gears and cleaned them   (in the preparation of summer where temps can go above 40 degrees celsius / 104f ) so  i am not going to have to deal with them again now, maybe till winter.

i am also still trying to figure out another method that could be applied on a software level instead, here is the first attempt by  @thierry4wd >https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5131840.0 , no success so far, but let's hope one of us work something out.

At some point you should be seriously scheduling this. I got an independent report from a miner that reached 78t/w on S9s using BraiinsOS. You have a serious profit incentive to do so... And the longer you take, the more you lose.

It is smart not to jump when anything "new" comes, especially if you are committed to so many units. You should have waited patiently for reports from others. When i first heard that S15s did this, i got the feeling they might be tempted to "port back" the same garbage to their older units, and indeed they have...

So with 100 S9s how much do you think 78t/w would consume? Why, 1.3PH @ 1014KW of course. I bet you currently are using around 1170KW, does saving 156KW sound good enough for you?

Besides if you go BraiinsOS you can downclock and aim to 10T per unit at 800ish W and much lower temperatures, not as nice as 78t/w but a decent 80t/w. How much are you consuming with this 2019 firmware right now?

Ok, you can always wait if someone can break it via software alone, or perhaps give them financial incentive to do so (post a bounty in services?)
3696  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: China refuses mining? on: April 18, 2019, 11:53:40 AM
Seems they won't be really doing it, they just want to "tax" some more money from it. But if they "do" it, its wealth that is simply moving elsewhere, such as Mongolia or Siberia. In short, their loss.

Pollution? Ridiculous. Bitcoin has little or nothing to do with pollution. China's weather is a bad combination of desert sand-dust and more traditional industries, especially given their massive use of coal, which is a reason they built that three gorge dam in the first place...

Besides bitcoin is self regulating itself in that regard, unlike what the PoS fanboys want to make people believe, mining will become unprofitable AT ANY PRICE if you don't produce your own "free" energy from renewables, so this will cure itself by simple market forces. Yes bitcoin price is climbing, but mining costs will rise faster than the bitcoin price, provoking a slow but steady reduction in mining (which is what you see every-time miners complain and quit, a design working as intended).

The last miners will be those with renewable energy, mark my words. The current generation of grid only mining will shrink and disappear, its only a matter of time. You may debate how long this will take, same as debating bitcoin price going up, but not the trend in the long term. We know it because of the code, which cannot be changed unless the vast majority agrees.
3697  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Popularity Soars in Argentina Due to Mass Inflation on: April 18, 2019, 11:34:42 AM
Argentina's inflation has hit 55% this year, caused by a collapse in confidence in the peso. As a result, Argentinians are turning to bitcoin as a hedge to further monetary collapse. No matter what the central bank does, inflation continues to rise. Notably, Tim Draper met with the president of Argentina some time ago and suggested the country adopt bitcoin as the national currency.

Good for them. I remember when we had such a little inflation, things were so good but we didn't know it...

Like us, they are probably simply seeking refuge for their savings.

The best thing their central bank should do is: Nothing, leave the coin free, and never ever "print" more, like we did. While last year they reached 55%, what do you think us did closing above one MILLION percent? Estimates indicate this year (should the de-facto gov remain in power) inflation will reach 10 MILLION percent.

Even with our soaring inflation (and with various media stating things like in this article) people here are yet to use openly use bitcoin for direct transactions. Everything is come and go from fiat. So the exchanges are the ones benefiting the most, unfortunately.

Argentinians fear the word "corralito". We have been put under that for more than 4 years now... Currently you are only allowed to withdraw barely the equivalent to 1 USD per day from a bank. They keep bashing Macri, only because they don't have Maduro; but they should remember their own history.

If Argentina sticks to free market economy, and doesn't go the way of protectionism or socialism, and instead pick classic liberalism or even better adopt Austrian economics, the country will recover, and i wouldn't worry the least. But if resulting from this, a socialist has a chance to return to power, then run for the hills (the neighbor countries).

Brave is Chromium with a slightly different look and a couple of bundled extensions. If Brave is not good enough for you, then Chrome isn't either because they are 99% the same thing. You could say the same thing about Opera and all the other Chromium based browsers out there.

See for yourself, try this url on both browsers: chrome://version/

I dont think the fuel is working out for them anymore.   They exported a ton to Cuba recently because thats a political ally and to Russia also.    The country has a problem because it cant drill oil properly, efficiently and also a chemical process to refine the heavy sour oil type is not so easily done.
They failed in industry to juggle costs of refinement despite the worlds largest oil reserves, its like a Greek tragedy its such a familiar failure and so is this turn to drugs trade and a criminal economy has developed due to normal capitalism being banned.

Oh i don't think you understand how the fuel business work, and its not about Cuba, that was on a different level. Gasoline trafficking lets them transform 100USD into 40000USD by crossing the border, that's only 1 cistern truck. This has been going on for decades, getting more lucrative by the minute (they LOVE hyperinflation).

Because of the ridiculous subsidy, gasoline is essentially free. A decade ago it was estimated 2/3rds of gasoline production was smuggled out of the country. That was when we still actually produced our own gasoline... Instead of importing now that we let our State owned refineries rot.
