Are there any other options besides them?
LocalBitcoins
3722  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Change Bitcoin SHA-256 to SCRYPT on: July 14, 2013, 03:35:37 AM
Remember a couple of years ago, right after GPU mining really took off, when everybody panicked because of Deepbit? Remember how that turned out?
3723  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is bitcoin price not going up? on: July 13, 2013, 09:45:51 PM
The entire world's never going to collapse all at once, but the certain parts of it will see periods of extreme turmoil from time to time.

If you happen to be located in one of those parts of the world and see the signs of impending turmoil, it's far better to move to some calmer part of the world before it's too late rather than try to shelter in place.

In this scenario gold is nearly useless, even in physical form. If you really need to leave a country quickly you can't take significant quantities of gold with you.

Bitcoins, on the other hand...

Doesn't this belong in the Altcoin section?

This advice doesn't seem to be very useful.
Bitcoin works only with internet.

This thread is one of the most successful examples of trolling I've seen in a while.
3727  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store most of your coins for long term storage? on: July 13, 2013, 05:06:00 AM
Where's the option for an offline Armory wallet on a disconnected laptop?

P2P trading FTW.

Stop using wallets that are stored on computers with an Internet connection...

3731  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Thieves, Govts and Mistakes on: July 13, 2013, 01:56:41 AM
The way to prevent this is to keep all your coins that you aren't currently spending in cold storage, with paper backups.
3732  Economy / Services / Re: Arbitrage with guaranteed profits with Bitcoin-Brokers. on: July 13, 2013, 01:51:52 AM
Currency fluctuation is one of the risks I have to account for on localbitcoins, because some buyers will try to exploit price changes in just that fashion.
FYI, you can fix that with better formulas: http://localbitcoins.blogspot.com/2013/06/this-is-first-in-series-of-posts.html
3733  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ASICS killing BTC ? on: July 12, 2013, 09:59:33 PM
IPX/SPX and TCP/IP were developed completely independently with different goals, different target markets, different development models that have very little in common besides the basic concepts.
The point is that IPX/SPX is the one that nobody uses any more.

Metcalfe's law means there is little demand for competing networking standards, just like there is little demand for competing cryptocurrencies.
3734  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Coinbase Warning !!! (Revisited, Somewhat Resolved) on: July 12, 2013, 09:52:31 PM
I've had no problems with them cancelling my purchases except for one incident back in February.

Now in the last 24 hours I've had two purchases cancelled, one initiated on the 4th and another from the 8th. The average purchase price for those two buys was $80.01, and at the time of cancellation the price they were quoting for buys was in the mid-$90s.
3735  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Users! Please Contribute Data! on: July 12, 2013, 09:48:26 PM
1 transaction out of 9 = 11%
I'm now at 3 transactions cancelled out of 20 or 15%

All three times have been cancelled one week after initiating the purchase, after the funds had successfully cleared from my bank account, and approximately at the time they had promised to release the bitcoins.

I also tried an "instant" buy last night after completing the new verification step. It's still pending after 18 hours.
3736  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Address Collisions. on: July 12, 2013, 07:10:47 PM
Can we talk about what happens when there is a collision? I like to envision dividing by zero, a star dying, Roger Ver ascending to heaven, and your computer literally exploding with bitcoins shooting out of it.

Go to the magazine of a public library and pull out all the subscription cards. Sign up the target of your joke for all of them. The December issues normally have special cards via which one can purchase gift subscriptions for other people. Throw in a couple of those for good measure.

3739  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why Scrypt and alternative hashing algorithms are pointless. on: July 12, 2013, 02:37:27 AM
You don't need homomorphism-wizzamacallit for that, _at all_.
It would be possible to do without homomorphic hashes, but I think there could be some advantages when the transaction lists become extremely large because the would that creates the header and searches for the nonce would never need to parse the entire entire transaction list. That job could be performed by someone else.
3740  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Interviewing Bitcoin Foundation Ex. Director Jon Matonis - Any Questions? on: July 11, 2013, 11:58:25 PM
Either was it would be good to hear an official position.
