3761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 07, 2014, 05:37:44 AM
It seems "bits" is the clear favourite.

Out of a small number of people, driven by campaigners to an out-of-the-way forum.

I'm sure the words 'bits' will see a lot of use. But it also has some major problems in:

• confusing people about the binary-digit bits that give Bitcoin its security – and in a cryptocurrency economy, more people than ever before will need some basic understanding of info-science

• making the core unit seem very imprecise and tiny: "bit-coin" reads as a value of "1/20th-of-a-cent-coin" (dust-like)

• creating confusion with words and 'b'-abbreviations already in use: multiple b-words, and making a B/b uppercase/lowercase distinction, is fragile in communications and commerce

So other words for 100-satoshis will circulate too, more precise and distinctive words, either because they fit into a logical system (like words based on the metric/SI 'micro'/mu/µ modifier), or because they've been chosen for uniqueness of sound and abbreviation (like 'zib'/Ƶ).

And maybe the other words will prove more useful, to both experts and learners. The real test is usage, not armchair opinions expressed with a click.

I couldn't agree more.  Especially your last point about the fact that this is living communication system: the right answer will be determined by everyday usage, not a poll Smiley

This is from 27 November 2010, still active!

[850 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff

Nice! 828 pages and counting.  That's pretty impressive.  We'll see if anyone can find an older/longer one Smiley

The funniest option in the poll is 'bitcoin'.  That would be pretty confusing:

a: This costs 1 bitcoin.
b: I will send you 100 satoshis
a: No I mean the bigger bitcoin.
b: Oh sorry, in that case I will send you 100000 bitcoins.
a: Yes, that will be fine.

I still have not heard back from seals about my bitcoin withdrawal.

I'm planning on taking legal action against Bryan Micon, and am going to file a complaint with the DOJ about him defrauding me. I don't think I could win a case in court over this, but given Micon's status as a US citizen and his affiliation with an unlicensed online gambling operation, I'm sure he'll be facing some legal issues if I pursue this.

Yikes.

Are you sure it's not just an oversight?  I haven't had any issues withdrawing and I haven't heard of anyone else having issues either.  Sometimes it takes a day or two (max) because they process withdraws by hand.  My guess is that you're jumping the gun here.

Not an oversight as pete played as shitvaccumer and colluded thus he had his bigbtc tournament win confiscated. Gl with your suit Pete. I call bluff on your litigation effort. Try reading the thread pilot would help before you respond with idiotic gibberish its a few posts back.

I see. I see.  Yes I saw the shitvaccumer guy griping a few posts back and the accusations of collusion.  Out of curiosity, I suppose that there must have been some pretty concrete proof he was cheating if you guys are keeping winnings.

The oldest still running thread in Off Topic Section is probably: What Song Are You Listening To?  Started: June 26, 2011, 11:11:29 PM

Yah, that one seems like it probably wins for 'off topic'.  I wonder about the forum overall.  I'd be sad if "What song are you listening to?" is the oldest one overall.

Thanks, I'll double check on cryptsy, I cant recall which exchange I looked at recently where there was literally no volume.

Probably Allcrypt.

or Bittrex

Just checked bittrex, volume of trade on cgb is 0.  Is there any exchange with active cgb trading going on?

I have this curiosity:

 * what's the oldest/longest still-active thread on this forum?

Does anyone know how to find it?
3768  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Cointra - Your favorite exchange on your mobile and tablet on: May 07, 2014, 02:03:15 AM
I'm going to take a look at this.  I haven't done much trading but maybe that was because I didn't know of a convenient platform.  Thanks for the tip!

One question before I download: can I see source code for this app or is it binary only?  If there's no source available I probably won't install because it's hard to trust a closed-source app with money.

3770  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why Science Does Not Disprove God on: May 06, 2014, 11:44:13 PM

The very fact people here can compare themselves to apes if proof they are not.

Motivation is the driving force that causes the flux from desire to will in life. For example, hunger is a motivation that elicits a desire to eat.

Motivation has been shown to have roots in physiological, behavioral, cognitive, and social areas. Motivation may be rooted in a basic impulse to optimize well-being, minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure. It can also originate from specific physical needs such as eating, sleeping or resting, and sex.

Motivation is an inner drive to behave or act in a certain manner. These inner conditions such as wishes, desires and goals, activate to move in a particular direction in behavior.

Is to state "I have no purpose in life" a lie?

Just stemming from this last idea...

I had spent some time trying to answer the "What is the purpose of life?" question, and I came up with the following:

Premise 1: The purpose of a purpose is to be purposeful according to whatever constitutes a purpose.
Premise 2: The purpose of life is to be purposeful according to whatever constitutes life.
Premise 3: Living constitutes life.
Therefore: The purpose of life is to live.

You guys are dropping some weird sophistry in this thread.  Those three premises and conclusion seem to me to be as vacuous and dereft of explication as any other tautology you might come up with.
3771  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 06, 2014, 11:38:37 PM
centoshi

More confusion. The correct term would be hecto-satoshi.
Cento means 1/100, not 100x

You are right.
We should keep centoshi for extra expansion in the future.

100 centoshi is 1 satoshi.

I appreciate you for staying true to the spirit of metric prefixes.  If we ever get to the point of needing to subdivide the satoshi, then I think I will be a rich guy Smiley

"You might accept the Cartesian proof of your own existence"

Can you point me to what it is?

In _Meditations on First Philosophy_ de Carte considers what he knows about himself, whether he can trust his own senses, etc.  He decides that although he cannot trust his own senses (he cannot know that his senses aren't subject to the trickery of an evil but more powerful being), he annot trust his thoughts (likewise, someone may be fooling him or playing with his thoughts) he *can* know that he exists because even if everything he thinks is wrong or foolish, he is still thinking, and that entails his existence.  Thus his famous line *cogito ergo sum* or "I think therefore I am".  Later he starts trying to rebuild his trust in his various senses but for me, the argumentation becomes weaker after that.
3773  Other / Meta / Re: ABUSE OF TRUST SYSTEM - whiskers75 on: May 05, 2014, 07:07:35 PM
There's no point in having a trust system if people are just giving negative feedback because they're mad at each other. And if the only punishment someone gets is a retaliation with more negative feedback that doesn't have anything to do with trust or trading.

But this is exactly what happens very often, I've seen the trust war go down and it's not pretty for the forum or for the users involved.

Light brings up a very good point about the inherent flaws of a trust system that's moderated, how it boils down to trusting in the moderators rather than the community as whole.  The latter is very much more in line with the spirit of open-source, peer-to-peer, etc.

I personally think that one solution would be to simply make the trust system a little less noticeable on people's accounts.  I mean, in the trading forums, people should be able to easily look up the trust record of another individual, but perhaps if putting negative trust didn't generate the 'red mark' on an account in any area of the forum, it would be less used as a weapon of dislike.

Like I mentioned, I suffered from the red mark one time in the past when tradefortress took an issue with me.  Because he was on default trust at the time, I had to wear a 'trade with extreme caution' scarlet letter for a while.  This was despite the fact that 1) I had never traded with TF or anyone else on this forum 2) I wasn't involved in trading. In a sense, the scarlet letter didn't really hurt me since I wasn't a trader, on the other hand, it was an embarrassment.  In my own case, TF turned out to be one of the biggest scammers known to our community, so in that sense, I was justifed.
3774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ƶ = µBTC on: May 05, 2014, 06:56:49 PM
The OP has a cute poem, but is this some kind of marketing thingy?  I don't get it.  Does he want us to call μbtc a 'zib' or something?  Or is zib his altcoin that he's promoting.  Confusing.
I didn't get it. So, is "Z" a new altcoin or it's just a name for 0.000 001 BTC?
Cause it's cool to have a special name for 0, 000 001 amount of BTC, especially if BTC price would rise

TL;DR: Ƶ = µBTC, it's really just a new unit.

Long story:

More than a month ago I saw that someone else was proposing "zib" as a new name for the unit µBTC. The proposal was just "zib", not "zibcoin".

I liked this idea so much, that I created a new Bitcoin wallet that allows users to display their Bitcoin stash in the unit of "zib" (= µBTC).
Fittingly, I called this wallet software "Zibcoin Core", because it was forked off from Bitcoin Core with the very only change that it would use "zib" as the default unit.
Even more, I presented this new wallet software in the mock style of an altcoin, though of course, it isn't an altcoin.

Also, I recently promoted this idea so much that some people thought it was my idea.
Of course, this isn't my idea.

To give the correct credit: The idea of "zib" was by gojomo, though I think that it actually should be just "Z" (zed), because zed sounds more natural.

Aha, thanks for the clarification and the backstory.  For my own use, I'm happy to just refer to µBTC.  Or, more commonly if I'm speaking of an amount that small, I just refer to Sat or KSat (depending on the amount).  I find the Z/zib thing to be rather irrelevant and while I now understand the story of what you're promoting, I just can't really see the motivation.

Good luck tho.
3775  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what should I do with 0.20247 bitcoins? on: May 05, 2014, 06:52:06 PM
hello, I am a total beginner. I have in my wallet 0.20247 bitcoins. My question is what should I do with them these days (excluding from saving it for years)?
Should I buy other digital currencies?
Should I invest in funds? if so which ones?
Should I donate?
Should I play with it in a stock market?
Any suggestion or comment would be appreciated.

thanks.

How did you get these?

You can find it in post #4. Smiley

I bought some 10.4 bitcoins for 495USD a few days ago. I am saving(!) most of it for my family members. the 0.20247 are the "left over" in my wallet, and I want to do something with them - to learn and gain experience.

Thanks, I guess I had missed that in my initial readthrough.  I understand now how you have this btc and why you want to do something with them.  I hope this thread has given you some good ideas.  Which ones are you going to pursue?
3776  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: THE INVESTOR'S CRYPTO | Cryptogenic Bullion | CGB on: May 05, 2014, 06:49:39 PM
Can someone please explain the recent price development? Looking at all the effort put in CGB lately by the CGB core team and community i don't see why the volume/price is way to low (are the strong hands holding because of POS?)...

Tough to say... However, work continues  Wink

We will be launching some exciting new marketing campaigns in the next couple of weeks to aid in CGB's exposure and will have an update on the new client (major overhaul) in the coming weeks. May is shaping up to be an exciting month and we will continue to build on the established groundwork throughout June leading up to a celebration of CGB's first birthday on June 27th! We have less than 8 weeks until the birthday bash and lots of fun planned so grab a seat and join in!

Nice, I'm still holding onto my 1.5CGB.  As far as I can tell, no reason to sell now.  I hope that the birthday generates some excitement.
3777  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why Science Does Not Disprove God on: May 05, 2014, 06:47:27 PM
Even if science currently carries assumptions that it can not at this time falsify due to our experimental limitations this does not mean that they are not falsifiable and could be tested in the future. Everything we know literally is science, god is ignorance ..everything we do not know or understand is contributed to god.

You're right to divide between potentially falsifiable (but currently impossible due to limitations of technology, et cetera) and things which are in principle falsifiable (no technology will help).  However, you're gone a bit overboard when you say that "everythign we know literally is science".  That really depends on a concrete definition of "know", which will get you into metaphysics, and you'll be as vague as the god-talkers next thing you know.

It's important, I think, to recognize the limitations of observation as well as the philosophical connundrum of conciousness and knowledge.  If you are true skeptic, you will not find any proof of your own existence---such proof doesn't exists.  The best you can do is sollipsistic arguments from heuristic but without first principles you have no basis for your heuristics.  You might accept the cartesian proof of your own existance, but that doesn't extend to your senses, your knowledge, etc.  Don't get me wrong, I'm essentially a skeptic, I'm just trying to talk about strict skepticism.

If you think you know what it means to "know" or to "exists" then I think you're a bit ahead of me.  Anyway, I find the claim that all knowledge is science to be ludicrous, and to be clear, I'm a godless atheist scientist.
3778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 05, 2014, 06:39:18 PM
Ah, I can see their reasoning now: The unit (µ)"bit" is already taken as a unit of information

No I don't think so.  A bit in that context is either a 1 or a 0 and bits of information cannot be subdivided.  AFAIK there is no such thing as a millionth of a 1 or a millionth of a 0.

I know what you mean about the atomic nature of a bit.  But, just to be specific, in information theory we often subdivide a bit because we're speaking about an average amount of information in a given context.
3779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 05, 2014, 06:37:53 PM
If we want to go bottom-up, then these units would be the most logical choice:

            1 atomic unit  = 1 satoshi  = 1 sat
           10 atomic units = 1 decasat  = 1 dasat
          100 atomic units = 1 hectosat = 1 hsat
        1 000 atomic units = 1 kilosat  = 1 ksat
    1 000 000 atomic units = 1 megasat  = 1 Msat
1 000 000 000 atomic units = 1 gigasat  = 1 Gsat

Can we get a consensus for that?

I think you're basically on the right track with this post, the only thing is that once you're talking about Msat or Gsat, the BTC is a better unit.  I mean rather than talk about millions of satoshis (Msat), isn't is simpler to talk about cents on the bitcoin?  Likewise for Gsat.  In my own daily life I do this:

I speak of "sats" when I'm in the 1-999 range of Satoshis.

I speak of "Ksat" when I'm in this 1000-99999 range of Satoshis.

I speak of mBTC or 'bitmils' when I'm in the 100000-99999999 range of Satoshi's, ie, for me I'll usually refer to .1btc as 100mBTC.

Above that, I speak of bitcoins, or BTC.

So I really only use 4 denominations: SAT, KSAT, mBTC, BTC

However, as long as you stick to standard metric prefixes, I can understand whatever you want to say.

How did you get these?  It's not a totally small amount of money at today's prices.  What you do with it really depends on your interests.
