if you think SOPA is bad, what could be done instead to effectively downsize piracy on the internet?
Oh the old trick of the trolls  Roll Eyes The "propose something good against X or accept Y" (even if Y isn't related to X in anyway, like sopa with piracy) Roll Eyes

as i understand, in your view sopa is bad, it has nothing to do with piracy other than sharing common term and it seems you want to completely ignore piracy issue. right?

you imply piracy is there to stay and nothing can be done, it will exist forever. to which i can agree with you partially that we won't be able to get rid off it completely.
in my view some measures should be taken to protect IP and copyrighted material more effectively than what current laws do. if you can't see or agree that piracy is an issue on the internet today, then there is not much left to talk about i guess on this issue.

anyone else care to elaborate what could be done to downsize piracy on the net?   or how SOPA could be used to censor the internet? excluding wikileaks example, as it's obvious and probably single instance where sopa could be utilized in such a way.

So the "Stop Online Piracy Act" has nothing to do with piracy?  Oh, and having a different opinion than you doesn't make someone a troll.

That remind me about the Ubisoft DRM, they made them to fight piracy. Result? Pirates still happily crack their games like before while honest buyers have to battle with the drm and all the problems it create.
Did DRM do something against piracy? No. But omg it was CREATED to fight it!
3762  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can bitcoin cure cancer? on: December 24, 2011, 02:31:33 PM
Yes, Bitcoin can.

How? Easy, give enough bitcoins to someone with cancer, he then use them to pay for all the expenses for healing and ta dah, bitcoin cured cancer. Ok, success is not guaranted but it's a start

Also you can donate bitcoins for research on cancer

I see in the list of guests is Jim Cramer, as himself.

BOOYA!

http://pastebin.com/d3emfRnP

And I suspect he'll be telling all the viewers that bitcoin 'has none of the characteristics of a currency'
http://it.twitter.com/#!/jimcramer/statuses/146790995416203264

..which might be nice from a legal standpoint - not so much if we want a lot of ordinary people to set up  a 'wallet'.

A 'wallet' containing something totally not like a currency?  Sounds like a hard thing to get anyone interested in.

Oh don't worry. Bernanke said gold is not money. Guess what? Gold is still precious.

Wow, nice website! Fascinating how there are lots of sports and about squads in all the world, nice job! This is exactly the thing where bitcoin shine!

About them running away with your btc, what about you keep less btc as possible on their website? Problem solved.

As any government censorship, sopa will only hurt honest ppl. Pirates are already doing illegal things, one more won't stop them. Pirates will probably keep doing what they are already doing

3768  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin-accepting organizations' acceptance/usage of GoDaddy which supports SOPA on: December 23, 2011, 04:29:35 PM
the concern that SOPA could somehow be used for censorship is reasonable and understood.

what do people who oppose SOPA suggest instead for dealing with and or fighting piracy though? from producers' perspective current dcma is poorly effective.
What has piracy to do with sopa? Nothing. Oh there is PIRACY in the name?

So if i call it "anti terrorism act" it automagically become a thing against terrorism? Wait so if i call it "anti drug acts"...
3769  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin-accepting organizations' acceptance/usage of GoDaddy which supports SOPA on: December 23, 2011, 02:39:21 PM
An important post in my opinion. SOPA is something everyone in this community should be well aware of and very strongly against. Any company supporting SOPA should be in immediate and absolute boycott. The last thing any Internet advocate wants or a Bitcoin advocate for that matter, is SOPA.
+1

Yeah sure, i bet that is the problem that generated 22 pages of troll...erh... critics

Odds are they are not from Libya but there may be some ethical issues... We don't know. We also do not understand why its such a big hush hush. No other makers of bitcoin mining equipment keeps everything in the dark. Some of the other FPGA makers have been shockingly open about what they are selling.
I think the important things are price, how much it consume, mhash/s and reliability.

I facepalm about the libya/egypt thing because it's ridicolous to troll about ETHICAL ISSUES when ALL electronic is made in china or nearby places where we KNOW laborers are exploited all the way.
Also if it's from libya, it's a + for me, helping their economy now that they are free

3772  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: guiminer help D: on: December 23, 2011, 02:12:05 PM
Let me explain better.

Guiminer let you mine by using your CPU if you do file->new miner->Ufasoft CPUminer. But CPU mining is just wasting your time, because a CPU mine veeeery veeery slow.

Or, you can mine by using your GRAPHIC CARD. Modern GPU (gpu=graphic processor) can be used for more things than just playing games. And they are very powerful in these things. So, what graphic card do you have? What computer do you have? Please tell us MORE info about that.
If you have an ATI card just do OpenCL miner
If you have an NVIDIA card well, they mine faster than a CPU but still much slower than an ATI so well if you wish to mine go ahead with CUDA miner but don't expect epic performance

Wow, the fact that they speak about mining on their website is a great thing

WCG is cpu-only so far.

And Folding well... check the statistics now, ATI contribute most to their computing power, then nvidia then cpu. Ok i know, this is only because a tons of bitcoin miners started folding, and 1 nvidia still kickass tons of ati on folding
But maybe with GCN things will change
3778  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My suggestions on how to make a decent client on: December 22, 2011, 07:19:12 PM
I doubt a lot of ppl will use it from mobile. You use mobile if you are forced to, so if you use bitcoin at restaurants or shops etc... but i think that for a long time we will use btc mainly to buy online, so you can use them via a normal computer.

So, let me resume what i would like

1)A "load/open" button to load a wallet and use it as i wish
2)A "Rescan" button
3)A button to change the path of the blockchain
4)Reverse the modify from 5.0 regarding showing numbers of blocks downloaded and connections. Ok i know, you can still see them via tooltip but why hide them? Make no sense, the client has to show so few things, that there is no point in hiding them
5)What about adding some statistics? Like telling me how big is the blockchain directly from the client, also telling me the upload and download speed

Got a nice stock of 5870s. Happy right now. ATI = fail yet again.

IMHO they are still pretty damn smart and they want to compete with Nvidia. Nvidia blows ATI for things like weather forecasting, folding and other important scientific, real world changing stuff. The catch ? Bitcoin is integer and folding ( GPGPU computing in general ) is based on floating point and DP ( double precision ). The 58xx were EPIC for integer but crap at floating point. The CGN crap is bringing more FP to the table to compete with Nvidia. We have to face it : Bitcoin / integer / bruteforcing is still a tiny share of the market ATM.
Pffft, bullshit.

Try projects like Milkyway@Home (that's a DOUBLE PRECISION one), Collatz Conjecture or Moo! Wrapper. Nvidia sucks there.
