No, they can't steal coins that way since you never send out the private key. The worst thing is that the transactions never reach the real blockchain, or they can "fake" to send some btc to you, as long as you rely on their blockchain
3783  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My suggestions on how to make a decent client on: December 21, 2011, 03:05:15 PM
This thread is the result of all the "why the f... there isn't a button to do that" moments i had while using the client.

And about "do it yourself": someone wasted time doing the 5.0, i think they can very well find enough time to implement something USEFUL
3784  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My suggestions on how to make a decent client on: December 21, 2011, 02:57:38 PM
No one gave me a over 9000 btc bounty

3785  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / My suggestions on how to make a decent client on: December 21, 2011, 02:50:10 PM
The problem is, the bitcoin client SUCKS. It sucked 6 months ago, it sucks even more today with version 5 (congratulations, you managed to make it suckier... the impossible made possible)

When someone install it, it find a software that work... more by magic than else

Let me explain what i find fail and some suggestion on how to fix it:

So you start the client and it automatically create the wallet. You don't even know what a wallet is or where it is, but it already exist, you use it and of course a newbie risk to lose it.
Why it is automatically created instead of asking me that when i start the client?
Why the ONLY name of the wallet must be wallet.dat? Is it impossible to make the client work with any name, like any decent software? Like you clic "create wallet" and you put a name, and if you already have it, you clic "Load wallet". But nothing, it's impossible
Why the only possible path is roaming/bitcoin? Or better, i know there is the parameter thing -setthepathyoudesire but well 1990 called and want it back. Is it so hard to put a button in the client that say "Set bitcoin path" or something like that?
Same about the -rescan thing, is it so hard to put a RESCAN button in the client??
And why the client NEED a wallet.dat? If you rename or remove it, it create one when you start it again, it seems it really love it. So you end up having different wallets (the wallet.dat is of course a FAKE wallet, cause any sane person keep the real wallet, the one with a lot of bitcoins, encrypted and with another name) and then you are like "ok now i close bitcoin, i rename wallet.dat in walletfake.dat and i put in the real wallet and rename it in wallet.dat, start bitcoin, spend my money then rinse and repeat..."

And well same apply for blockchain, you should be able to set a path for it directly from the client, and make it's path indipendent from the wallet.

I don't think doing this is hard, and would make the client easier to use.

AFAIK,
1/2/2012 is the 2nd of January, but
1.2.2012 is the 1st of February.
Can you bring an example of a country, where 1/2/2012 means the 1st of February?
Sure, Europe and probably the rest of the world

Blockchain download is slow, just wait  Cheesy

As for your second question, you are speaking about Thin Clients, they ask for each transactions on a server that has the whole blockchain

problem is, as you maybe noticed, Bitcoin is a decentralized p2p system that rely on the fact that a lot of ppl has a node with the full blockchain to work and be safe
3788  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It is time for an official protest on: December 20, 2011, 04:00:54 PM
Well well, isn't this quite retarded.

Some forum members are butthurt because a fiction TV show called their favorite hobby 'illegal', and their arguement is that businesses who use it should be protected?

There is no one to sue them, and no reason to sue, much less no one to sue in the first place.
Also, I don't think the law recognizes defamation of a computer program.
There are companies that depend on the Bitcoin system - imagine that there was a TV show about someone 'illegally inventing Microsoft Windows'.

Microsoft is a registered company and trademark. Windows is a registered trademark and patent. You want to play with decentralized fire, you should expect to get burned.

If any business owner out there is stupid enough to accept a payment method associated with high amounts of fraud for example, they deserve to reap the rewards of public disapproval. It is very clear to me that very few of the members in this forum, especially in this thread, have ever run a healthy and successful business.

I think he is speaking about fiat money
3789  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It is time for an official protest on: December 20, 2011, 02:57:40 PM
I agree, calling "illegal" something that is perfectly legal is defamation. The fact that bitcoin is decentralized doesn't mean they can do whatever they want cause "ahah there is no central organization"

Besides, existence proofs are always compelling, witness the BOINC project does this for CPUs and GPUs as well and it is not centralized other than as a matter of recordkeeping convenience.
Makes no sense, BOINC is very centralized, it must rely on a central system to feed it with Work Unit to crunch.

Dwolla isnt an exchange. Its a payment processor (think Paypal). You cant use it to buy bitcoin directly, you can use  it to fund your dollar account on some bitcoin exchanges.

Other than that, yes you basically got it right. You buy bitcoins on an exchange like Mt Gox or may I suggest, http://www.cryptoxchange.com/ (probably easier to fund, but volume is still frighteningly low). Then you can move those bitcoins to your bitcoin wallet on your PC. If you are thinking non trivial amounts, read the faqs on backing up and securing your wallet.

Thanks, this is exactly the sort of break down that I was looking for.  I'll have a look at http://www.cryptoxchange.com/.

One more quick question.  Does a "connection" of sorts have to exist for a bitcoin transaction to take place?  For example, let's say I want to send you 50 bitcoins, and let's say you've provided me with your address (from which I gather is a public key).  Do you have to be aware of the transaction for it to take place.  Can you be offline when I send it?  In other words, can I send you the 50 bitcoins without having to worry about when you'll be around or online to collect it?
Who make the transaction must be online, to send it to other nodes so that eventually it will be put in a block in the blockchain.

The partner is not required to be online, transactions are registered in the blockchain, that is the same for everyone
3794  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why are people losing faith? on: December 19, 2011, 06:21:09 PM
I know skepticism is healthy, but why are people so quick in jumping off the bitcoin ship?

AFAIK, bitcoin had a quick boom and an even quicker fall this year. But, now it's actually more valuable then before the boom. Newbs can lose faith when they realize that they can't have a bank protecting them because they are their own banks
This is very true. Now it can be used for MUCH MORE things than before the boom

I think politicians are rich enough
3796  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some newbie questions on: December 19, 2011, 04:17:21 PM
Does any of this make sense?

Thanks in advance.

Yes to all (except of  course that Dwolla is not a bitcoin exchange itself  Cheesy)

Remember to backup your wallet and do not lose it
3797  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why a Stable BTC Price is Good on: December 18, 2011, 09:29:01 PM
Stable price is not good, it means no more people adopt bitcoin.

A such low price, means that few ppl use it.

Funny, I think the exact opposite.

Why would a merchant want to adopt bitcoins if the price was volatile? Too risky.

Think about it...
If you buy $30 sunglasses with 10 bitcoins today, and then bitcoin lost $1 in value the next day, merchant only has $20 nopw and lost all his profit.
If bitcoin will be adopted by more people, it's price WILL increase, because more people will buy btc for their needs

So that stability is only temporary
3798  Economy / Goods / Re: Spend bitcoins anywhere PAYPAL is accepted, NOW FEE FREE! on: December 18, 2011, 06:08:04 PM
Keep in mind I think Paypal is reporting earnings now to the IRS (I don't remember the source of the info). This will look like an unreported income (if you don't report it).  If you reported your earnings in bitcoins, then you may be able to discount this as already reported income. (IANAA)

Not everyone live in USA...

The screenshots are about version 5.0?  Shocked

It SUCKS! Luckily i still have my 4.0 here...

Also free software? With all the bounties&co spent, it's not exactly free... And there is a lot of really free software much much better than this

Is it so hard to make a decent gui? Is it so hard to NOT make things worse?
